I can't help but snicker that a digital version could ever be sold out. Dorito's is thinking WTF?
In this case beta limits can be the only reason.
Imagine all the angry gamers frothing at the mouth right now, that they can't get their digital version. Really is great marketing ploy. But Anet just upped the ante for themselves with this move, they better hope this Beta runs as smooth as a launch or flames will be acoming soon!

The angry frothing gamers can still get digital copies from other retailers that still have keys left. Best Buy is one that still has them available.
In real life, when you restrict supply, the price of the product goes up.
When ArenaNet restricts supply, the price stays the same and they lose guaranteed sales.
This is an attempt to keep the beta weekend load under control and they should be commended for making the hard decision to stop taking people's money in the interest of a healthy BETA.
^This. You know they care about gamers when they do this. Dangle themselves from a cliff to make sure they don't hurt others. Wish other companies would've went this route.
except you can still get the digital download from Best Buy, Gamestop... everywhere else
It's hype. They want a headline. Tera is too good.
That's because those are boxes, the codes are inside them, already printed out. Therefore they are counted as part of the limit.
Also, i'd go an watch gamebreaker They trash your beloved game. He throws the box. Something that's only ever done for truly bad games.
TERA-BLE is DoA according to them.
The gamebreaker guys like WoW and SWTOR.
These are digital downloads from Best Buy and others, not boxes
Nope, they're not. There are a few digital partners who will have had [x] codes allocated. Arenanet's main site will also have had [x] codes. But most stores sell a physical box with a code which is THEN used for a digtal download in the future. Is it weird? yes.

Your problem is that you don't understand that other digital retailers also have a limited supply of codes.
But based on your joke of a few posts, I don't figure you would actually like to understand the situation.

That makes sense. But you would have thought, with 1 million beta applicants (or whatever) and the email last week: "didn't get into the beta?" they would have been prepared
I find it a bad practice to make a money grab and then cut off purchases to save on bandwidth costs. I'm sure they could accomodate a million people, surely that's what they aim to get even in the short run, but they are choosing not to.
its boils down to one thing......they need to boost their box sales, they didn't print all those discs not to sell them, its a smart move on their marketing department
There are times when one must ask themselves is it my passion that truly frightens you? Or your own?

Was thinking about canceling my CE Pre-order because it's so expensive, but I guess I'll hold on to it for now. No it's not paid off which is why I'm not in the beta

Is this sarcasm? Hard to read into this one.
no its legit

Umm GW2 will not be on disc at all no matter where you get it from no matter what edition, its digital even if you buy the box.
The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true.
So... marketting geniuses don't hang out at MMORPG? Who would have thunk it!
Stop all your silly amateur marketting arguments and conspiracy theories. This is what happened:
By guaranteeing weekend beta access to pre-purchasers they created a bottleneck. They can only have as many players this weekend as their infrastructure and support can handle. They reached that limit. That's all there is to it.
If you were waiting to buy tonight or tomorrow and you can't find a local store with pre-sale codes, my sincere condolences.

People are truly running out of things against GW2 to troll about. No matter what, they just won't stop. Oh well.
Nothing like artificially limiting the supply of a (theoretically) infinitely distributable product to increase demand. How classy. If any other company did this (like Blizzard, EA, THQ, etc.), people would be calling for blood. But since Arenanet can apparently do no wrong, everybody's cool with it. UGH.
Though I've got to hand it to them, it's brilliant marketing at least.
This post is gold right here.
Nah. Maybe pyrite.
There are 48 servers and the estimated number of people who prepurchased is somewhere around 200,000 so far, based on some guesswork. That's over 4000 per server already. 4000 per untested, un-optimized server. And EU isn't sold out yet. Plus there's the press coming and the 10,000+ actual beta testers already in the game. Sounds plausible to limit the number of additional testers with that in mind.
Although it is also some brilliant marketing. I can't remember ever hearing about a game company *refusing* sales, for whatever the reason. You have to admit, the trend has been to push the stuff out the door and damn the consequences. It shows a lot of confidence to hold back sales. They *know* people will be back for it later.
let's assume there's some truth to all the people crying marketing trick, my question is: what difference does it make? Does saying that magically produce more copies? Np. Does saying that help the people the ppl who want to buy it feel better? No. does saying help you sleep at nite? No, if your answer is yes,you really need a life.

Haha "Supply & Demand", "Marketing Ploy". Excellent theories guys - keep it up!
Now, if only someone could point me in the direction of a store with a nice selection of tin foil hats?

They got plenty of tin foil hats at WOW and SWTOR. I got mine! :-)

If this is a marketing move, why didnt they also closed the EU sales?
Remember that everyone outside EU is buying the NA version of the game
So... if GW2 has maxed out on the number of sold digital copies for the BWE; with 24 servers... how many people are talking about?
10k? 100k? 500k? 1m?

because servers can only hold so many people. jesus come on man.

Then why can I buy digital copies of WoW when there are dust covered boxes on the Walmart shelves?
How can you be sold out digitally? its ridiculous.
