You can exchange ur gold for GEMS wich means u can buy "cash" itens without spend a single cent.
I think most people can agree that this is bad form on the part Arenanet.
Putting in a drop that can be opened by buying something from the cash shop just seems a bit lame. It's something I expect from EA not Arenanet.
Keys drop in game, golems drop in game, and chests will even give you keys. The cash shop is an optional way to open the chests if you want what's in there RIGHT NOW!.
So you need to pay real money to open lockboxes.... sigh
Yes that isnt pay to win but if you dont pay, your gonna feel like you cant get the items you grinded for and that would piss me off terribly.
Yes they need to make money but i for one HATE HATE HATE this model.
AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!
box keys can be dropped from mobs....

I'm getting sick of retards not doing any research and ass.u.m(e)ing that they know what they are talking about.....ffs do some research/analysis before just wasting peoples' time on misleading threads....
GEMS acuired by CASH ORRRRRRRRR in game GOLD
KEYS bought by GEMS ORRRRRRRR drop in game,
This is not rocket science....quit making excuses not to play. Just don't f*cking play....D3 and WoW is ----> way.
I know this thread is from the BWE but just a few posts above me (dated today) you got somebody using this thread to justify not playing...still...NOT READING...smh

Sorry if it came off looking towards you. I was agreeing with you haha. I came in here blasting the OP but then, ironically not doing MY research, noticed that the OP repented later in the thread. This was directed towards whoever believes that the system MAKES you spend money....it doesn't.
yes and these boxes give you insane buffs that turn you into animal and you pwn everything even castle lords
I got a box drop in the game, got a key drop, and inside the box was a potion that turned me into an owl. The first skill on my skillbar was "win"...I pressed it, and everyone died.
True story.
The cash shop items like the keys and the plant food are designed to take advantage of impatient people. If you just play, you don't need to buy anything. With that said, though...the one thing that annoys me is that you can only grow one dye seed at a time. I was surprised by that. *shrug* Not a big deal, but it will take a LONG time to grow all the dyes if you collect them all and they take 24 hours each. Like a year or more.

Once again someone with the wrong info spitting out farce information to make G2 look bad...Simply put...When a lockbox drops a key will follow.. I had two drop during beta and both times key dropped... Inside the box was a gem and random items that you could buy from the store if you choose too..Instead I got it for free so your analigy of Pay to be annoyed is wrong so continue trolling elsewhere.

The keys need to be rarer than the boxes in order to make key-selling meaningful n the item mall. Just because you belong to the % who received equal amount of keys and boxes, it doesn't mean that you belong to the norm. If it actually was equally high chance to get a key as it is to get a box, there would be absolutely no problem and it would be stupid to sell keys in item mall.

Or they may be designed to take advantage of both impatient and normal people. Hard to say where the line is drawn.
Both mystic chests and mystic keys can be sold to and purchased from the auction house. Both are also random drops from mobs and personal mission rewards.
Mysic chests do not contain any valuable gear. They contain potions, buffs and elixirs that polymorph you into mobs. While polymorphed you cannot attack or even jump. Hardly worthy of all this whining.
i too during BW pick a box (first) and than a key.
i dont remember what i get but maybe was a 5x imp potion or anything else. the imp potion was very fun, turn me in a RED fly imp, but as i say im not sure if i win that on box.

A problem is that, assuming it is properly designed so that keys are rarer than boxes, for many people, the extra boxes will be a reminder of the item mall. Some people may find that to be very annoying.

If developers had to worry about all of the things that can possibly annoy some people, video games would not exist.

Pretty sure you can sell the boxes. And I think I would rather sell them for in game money than open them, frankly. I hate managing buff like that.
Although that +2% magic find buff I found was tempting.

It has not gone too many years since legal RMT was completely frowned upon, it is not too unrealistic to think that some people still get a bad taste in their mouth whenever they get reminded.

sooooo a reminder of a cash shop which doesn't force you to use it or it shuts off its game to you vs a monthly sub reminder every month that if you do not pay you can not play... I find the monthly sub more annoying and useless then some random chests that "remind" me of a gdam cash shop that DOES NOT FORCE me to use it...
though it may be annoying to some people they still are NOT FORCED to use the cash shop and it gives ABSOLUTELY NO unfair advantage over those who do not use it vs those who chose to use it. Especially with these keys.. I mean seriously!! big whoopy fricken deal...
The chests are convenience and the keys in the cash shop are nothing more then the same. They are simply providing a way for people to give themselves more convenience not unfair advantage. Who cares if its annoying, its no different then vender trash throw it out if you do not wish to use it or put it in the auction house.
now if Anet, speculation, if Anet started putting some unfair gear / advantages in these chests then we would have something to cry our little eyes out over but seriously pissen an moaning over something so silly is laughable. (facepalm)

Legal RMT has been around in online gaming before MMORPGs even existed. Some MUDs were doing it for years. Your focus is simply too narrow.
In fact all of these problems you have been seeing worked themselves out decades ago. The MUDs that sold uber weapons had a large backlash and the RMT stuff went into an happy medium equlibrium state around 1997-8. Its all just happening again with a different audience and for profit instead of maintenance.
It is amusing to see people think this is new though and get all outraged.
You know I got massacred in a MUD by a guy with just about the most Uber weapon I have ever seen in any RPG. That thing was like two shotting Gods. That dude was a prick who griefed people with that pay-to-win weapon in a MUD that had very very limited PvP.
I lost 5 days worth of playing time in XP from one death on that guy. A death that took 5 seconds to happen on a guy that was an unlockable elder race with a huge xp penalty and able to whomp up on almost anything in the game. This was in the mid-90's.
I have every reason to not like pay to win RMT. But this has all happened before and in the end it reaches rough this equilibirum point. And it turns out fine for the most part.

The RMT in this game is completely optional. There is nothing in those chests that require the purchase of mystic keys. Moreover, mystic keys can be sold and purchased on the auction house.
Lastly, GW2 does not have a subscription fee, if these "some people" have a bad taste for a completely optional cash shop, how do they feel about a mandatory $15 charge to just access a game?
Are you playing now? Or is this 3 weeks of pinned up frustration.? or do you not even have any intention on buying the game but feel like trolling today using poor english as your primary weapon?

Well the chances of the key dropping are slimmer than the chances of you getting a box.
That has to be built into the system. If it isn't then the whole system becomes redundant.
So while it is possible to get a key, it is in Arenanet's best interest to make that chance slim. This way you buy keys from their shop.
Is it bad? I just think it tarnishes their image a little. It makes the game feel cheaper. It brings down a game with high standards.
