Both mystic chests and mystic keys can be sold to and purchased from the auction house. Both are also random drops from mobs and personal mission rewards.
Mysic chests do not contain any valuable gear. They contain potions, buffs and elixirs that polymorph you into mobs. While polymorphed you cannot attack or even jump. Hardly worthy of all this whining.
A problem is that, assuming it is properly designed so that keys are rarer than boxes, for many people, the extra boxes will be a reminder of the item mall. Some people may find that to be very annoying.
sooooo a reminder of a cash shop which doesn't force you to use it or it shuts off its game to you vs a monthly sub reminder every month that if you do not pay you can not play... I find the monthly sub more annoying and useless then some random chests that "remind" me of a gdam cash shop that DOES NOT FORCE me to use it...
though it may be annoying to some people they still are NOT FORCED to use the cash shop and it gives ABSOLUTELY NO unfair advantage over those who do not use it vs those who chose to use it. Especially with these keys.. I mean seriously!! big whoopy fricken deal...
The chests are convenience and the keys in the cash shop are nothing more then the same. They are simply providing a way for people to give themselves more convenience not unfair advantage. Who cares if its annoying, its no different then vender trash throw it out if you do not wish to use it or put it in the auction house.
now if Anet, speculation, if Anet started putting some unfair gear / advantages in these chests then we would have something to cry our little eyes out over but seriously pissen an moaning over something so silly is laughable. (facepalm)

If developers had to worry about all of the things that can possibly annoy some people, video games would not exist.
It has not gone too many years since legal RMT was completely frowned upon, it is not too unrealistic to think that some people still get a bad taste in their mouth whenever they get reminded.
Legal RMT has been around in online gaming before MMORPGs even existed. Some MUDs were doing it for years. Your focus is simply too narrow.
In fact all of these problems you have been seeing worked themselves out decades ago. The MUDs that sold uber weapons had a large backlash and the RMT stuff went into an happy medium equlibrium state around 1997-8. Its all just happening again with a different audience and for profit instead of maintenance.
It is amusing to see people think this is new though and get all outraged.
You know I got massacred in a MUD by a guy with just about the most Uber weapon I have ever seen in any RPG. That thing was like two shotting Gods. That dude was a prick who griefed people with that pay-to-win weapon in a MUD that had very very limited PvP.
I lost 5 days worth of playing time in XP from one death on that guy. A death that took 5 seconds to happen on a guy that was an unlockable elder race with a huge xp penalty and able to whomp up on almost anything in the game. This was in the mid-90's.
I have every reason to not like pay to win RMT. But this has all happened before and in the end it reaches rough this equilibirum point. And it turns out fine for the most part.
I didn't play MUDS, I do however know that the players who grew up with console games and most normative computer games (such as Warcraft series, Heroes of Might & Magic, Starcraft 1, Civilization, etc; Diablo 2 was an exception) were used to paying one fee to access the game and have equal grounds without being nickel and dimed.
With several early MMORPGs we had at least equal ground: you paid your fee and everyone else who paid the fee and started at the same time as you had practically the same game as you did. Maybe you didn't have as much time as someone else to play the game, but that was fine, it was ok to take your time and we accepted that people who had played the game more had actually experienced more of the game.

I tend to agree with you and with the OP, although less about the key issue than other things. They'll make the game as inconvenient as possible without forcing you to quit. You need to pay for character slots, bank slots, inventory slots, etc.
When I pay for a game, I typically expect to get full access to all the game has to offer. I don't expect to have to pay more to unlock aspects the authors have arbitrarily decided to make unavailable.

Some people have alot of free time to offer. There could be a ton of reasons. They might be unemployed. They might be unemployable. They might be physically challenged. Why has any MMORPG or MUD ever limited your number of characters.
I can guarantee that past the year 2000 it wasn't becasue database space cost significant money. Their limits have alwasy been abstract and arbitrary.
You didn't pay $50 for the game and part of that purchase was 5 character slots per server. They just made up some rule for some reason to instill some sort of control on the game. They could easily have given you 50 slots per server and not have had to pay any signifncantly different amount in upkeep.
You know what people did instead? They dual boxes and paid another $50. The fact is the situation hasn't changed just the monetization of it.
People have been paying money to cicumvent arbitrary rules that had no basis in actual resources since MMORPGs were released.

You're right, the amount of slots they give you at this point is always completely arbitrary. You could also argue that there has been established an industry standard in how many character slots one can expect on the purchase of a game prior to any further transaction, and it's typically in the realm of 8-10.
You're also right that in the past people have obtained additional accounts to get around the character limit, but that doesn't negate my complaint about having to pay because they decided to give me less character slots than the current standard. You're basically just saying that others have done it for more money so I shouldn't complain.
You also don't address the limited bank and inventory space. These are things you'd expect to find in a Free to Play title, something that you don't have to pay any initial cost for but can upgrade with money as you go.
So right now, this is a Buy to Play title with a Free to Play cash shop, instead of a purely cosmetic cash shop as it probably should be.

What limited inventory space? You get 5 inventory slots total. That is the same amount as WoW. Unline WoW, you can also purchase 3 additional slots.
The Bank space is not that limited when you consider that crafting materials have their own storage, cooking materials have their own storage and minipets have their own storage. Yes, you can purchase more bank slots but they are account-wide.
You have 5 unique races. 5 unique personal stories and 5 character slots to experience all 5 stories. How many people do you think will actually level more than 2 characters anyway?
Lastly, you are not paying a subscription fee. Use that $15 you save to purchase some character/bank/inventory slots and stop whining.
They're TF2 crates except that you can find keys in-game too.
I found 3 of them and Zero keys... And guess what, ZERO fucks were given.
HERE'S HOW YOU FIX: Don't pick them up from loot. If you accidentally pick one up... put it on the trading post, or drag-drop the box back onto the Ground and click Confirm... Problem solved. No point in wondering what's in it if it's more troube to open than it was to get to drop.
OP wants to talk about annoying... try Doing Nick-the-Traveler farming every week, even when the Trophy turn-ins have like a 1% chance of dropping.... only to get a bunch of stupid Tonics and nothing else of value. You can't even buy Nick Presents from their Store.
Random drops. There are 3 accounts going in my house. So far only one lockbox has dropped and one key has dropped. For the same person.
Lol wow, didn't know they were going to pull the STO casino scam.
What a shame.

Cheers!
They don't disclose the odds (because they're horrible). That is a scam.
Cheers!

Has the anti-GW2 script changed back to the cash shop again? It's so hard to keep up.
It's on a hate-go-round. I can't wait till the game releases so this stuff settles down! I thought when Tera went live it would, but I think because GW2 fans are anxious it's just going back and forth.

There's very little actual hate. Just people who are capable of liking 90% of a game, while being vocal about the 10% they are concerned about / have issues with. And then there's fanboys who can't accept that not everybody likes their game 100%.

And borderline illegal as well.
Totally almost illegal. Giving people the option to pay for a chance at getting a decent item, in a game where it's insanely easy to get decent items. The nerve!
If I ever go to court, I hope you guys are my opponents' A-team.

We get it.. you love the game and you arent a hater just "concerned". That would hold water except it is just the SAME complant shouted again and again. You dont like the keys. Got it. Someone else says they dont mind the random chest and keys. You tell them they are wrong and that they are a fanboy cause they dont agree with you. The next guy that DOES agree with you starts his own thread cause he too needs his voice heard in his own special thread.
AND THEN people come here starting a thread on how over hyped the game is because GW2 threads are all over the front page. Then they see something they can rag on and start yet another thread about hate topic of choice.
Of course then you need your own thread about hate topic of choice this week so then the cycle repeats.

Wait, it's illegal to not disclose drop rates of items in MMOs? Can I sue someone?
Actually, any gambling is generally illegal in many countries & US states as soon as money is involved. If Diablo 3 had mystic chests along with RMT, that would be flat-out illegal. So, yeah, you could sue quite a lot of developers - question is if you're really gonna win.

OP wants to talk about annoying... try Doing Nick-the-Traveler farming every week, even when the Trophy turn-ins have like a 1% chance of dropping.... only to get a bunch of stupid Tonics and nothing else of value. You can't even buy Nick Presents from their Store.
Lol wow, didn't know they were going to pull the STO casino scam.
What a shame.

If it was a scam they would not tell you it was random, but they do. I suppose you have a special personal definition for scam otherwise.
Cheers!
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
They don't disclose the odds (because they're horrible). That is a scam.
Cheers!

Has the anti-GW2 script changed back to the cash shop again? It's so hard to keep up.
"Loading screens" are not "instances".
Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.
And borderline illegal as well.
Hype train -> Reality
It's on a hate-go-round. I can't wait till the game releases so this stuff settles down! I thought when Tera went live it would, but I think because GW2 fans are anxious it's just going back and forth.
MMORPG Fans UNITE, don't Fight!
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
I got 7 chests and no key in BWE....
*OFF*
No need to UNITE! We are already UNITED! =D
There's very little actual hate. Just people who are capable of liking 90% of a game, while being vocal about the 10% they are concerned about / have issues with. And then there's fanboys who can't accept that not everybody likes their game 100%.
Hype train -> Reality
Wait, it's illegal to not disclose drop rates of items in MMOs? Can I sue someone?
Totally almost illegal. Giving people the option to pay for a chance at getting a decent item, in a game where it's insanely easy to get decent items. The nerve!
If I ever go to court, I hope you guys are my opponents' A-team.
You've got a long list of people you can now sue. Go get rich!
I didn't realize I was only entitled to point out flaws in a system if I were paying a subscription fee, so my apologies.
We get it.. you love the game and you arent a hater just "concerned".
Wait, since it's only borderline illegal, does this mean you can only kinda sue people for damages?
And what's the ETA on cycling back to complaining about tab targeting, because I want to make sure that I've read up for that.

Actually, any gambling is generally illegal in many countries & US states as soon as money is involved. If Diablo 3 had mystic chests along with RMT, that would be flat-out illegal. So, yeah, you could sue quite a lot of developers - question is if you're really gonna win.

But ArenaNet does not have gambling for real money.
