thats the main issue I find with these games such as SWTOR. Story based content is blown through so fast its impossible to meet the demand as people finish it. The other issue is putting a lot of resources into the story aspect only hurts the other aspects of the game such as combat. I think TSW did better job making a good atmosphere for the story than SWTOR did but think it will suffer the same problem many had where the story content wont be enough to warant playing for more than a few months. Unless they have some amazing ideas for endgame which I haven't seen anything yet
Yeah. I mean the game is fun to me but really...how fun is it going to be making alts going through the same thing? That is the problem when you rely too much on story.
...and how much content is there really? Essentially seven other zones? Doesn't seem like a lot considering how easily you could complete Kingsmouth.
May still be worth a purchase. I'm considering it. Just many would be well advised in realizing that this game may not be something that is going to be a long term venture. Possibly one to three months unless as you said they have an end game that simply keeps people's interest.

The cutscenes are a huge annoyance in this game.....To me the only cutscene should be at the very start of the game (like before we even start playing)....Anything more than that is just a huge distraction.....I guess they wanted to do something other than text questing , which most of us dont read anyway, but this is even more annoying.....WHen I want to play a MMO, I want to play it not watch it......To answer your question, I have no clue who is their intended audience.
The cutscenes in this game are top notch, nothing like this stupid braindead SWTOR crap. They are very well voiceacted and create an adult themed MMO. Well done Funcom
*snickers* *giggles* guess I am one of the only ones who got this, good one
I doubt it. You're just one of the few that can actually see what MMOExposed posts.
I think this game is for people who love adventure games like what Ragnar has made in the past. His history of gamemaking seems to be prominent here with the story-driven element. Adventure games of the past were full of puzzles and mysteries. TSW is so different (from what I can tell) from other games that it should have no problem being a primary or secondary game alongside games like GW2, TERA, WoW, EVE, whatever. Why is there always that feeling that people here are pushing for there to be only ONE "great game?" I think we NEED diversity in the genre.

I can agree with all of this.
For me, after comming off a long strech in Darkfall, then SWTOR...im reall missing the game that requires patience and though, over FPS style action in DF and easy mode with decent cutscenes in SWTOR.
Ill end up playing GW2 eventually. Ive been around long enough to know how the rollercoaster ride that game is going to be. Once people realize its warhammer online with more bells/whistles and that endgame isnt going to be some sort of groundbreaking epic...and the OP classes and nerf balancing start taking place...its going to be just like all the other games before it and after 3 months the community is going to be completely turned over (meaning pre launch hype crowd leaves and people interested in the game for what it is fill in)
When im in the mood for that ill be buying it, but i want to miss that whole part where the huge zerg of players starts to realize its not the best game in the world and the community self distructs.
TSW is appealing to a diffrent crowd, one that has patience. People that are not going to complain about cutscenes since they wont be racing to endgame to get a head start on pvp gear grinding so they can stomp casuals. I think the game, being funcom and its reputation, and already proving to be unsatisfactory to the "race to endgame then pvp gear" crowd who are too ADD for cutscenes (think SWTOR and spacebar)...this game is going to be filled with people who are looking for exactly the type of game this is, without the hype and dissapointment cycle most AAA themeparks go through.
Funcom just needs to ensure that the game is complete and stable enough as to not drive away these people. Even if that meant pushing launch back 6 months or whatever. The only mistake they can make in a game like this. The wow-crowds sold on GW2 and wont be staying here anyway, dont try to appeal to them.
WHen I want to play a MMO, I want to play it not watch it......To answer your question, I have no clue who is their intended audience.
It's funny that you mention that. I was playing the TSW beta on Friday, and my brother asked me if I was watching a movie (and not a very good movie, at that)... WAY too many cutscenes.
I agree. And while I was pleasantly surprised by the puzzles in some of the quests, I think my hand was held a little bit too much during the quests. Maybe this changes once you leave the starter areas? I hope so. The game seems promising to me, although it feels more like a single player than a MMO, much like SWTOR.
TSW definitely has some redeeming factors to make up for the hand-holding. The graphics do look great at max settings with max AA. The ability wheel is very intriguing, and offers enough customization to keep me interested for a little while. The puzzles are fun. The world feels like GTA meets Half Life 2 with a bit of the Walking Dead mixed in (very cool).
But all of those positives are moot because of a traditional, cut-and-paste, poorly implemented combat system.
My first complaint was the character creation, but then I read a message from Funcom saying the character creation options will be much improved before release. I can live with that.
My next complaint is that no matter which faction you choose, you will end up playing WITH the other factions (not against them) once you reach Kingsmouth (after 10 to 30 minutes of play). From what I can tell, the factions serve no purpose other than offering a different storyline.
My TSW experience was worse than mediocre as soon as I reached the character creation, and it never really went up-hill or down-hill from there. It just remained a mediocre experience from start to finish.
To answer the OP's question: I believe the target audience is anyone who loves killing zombies. This game is Call of Duty: Zombies with RPG elements and traditional MMO combat.

who will enjoy this game? People who like single player games, adventure games, games with a good story , stealth games, horror games, people with really good computers (you can play with a 32 bit system but only on medium graphics), people who don't care about Tera like combat or animations, people who like politics, sabotage, intrigue, zombies, puzzles, people with patience and people not looking for the traditional mmo experience
My question is, if this is NOT trying to cater to the "rush to endgame" mentality gamers, the "endless gear grind" gamers, et all, then why is gear your vertical progression mechanic and why are there going to be raids after launch? Who is going to participate in this gear progression and who are going to be running these raids, if not that crowd (which I am going to go ahead and assume will require high-end gear, will be tiered, etc. and all the other baggage that raids have to offer - unless the devs have clarified that by "raids" they mean something other than "raids" of course)?
For my part, I'm perfectly happy with the game NOT having a raiding endgame or even an "endgame" at all, and I'm perfectly happy to not spend all my time in game chasing the best-in-slot piece to be Gearscore-rated by others who want to kill Cthulu. Which is why I'm wondering why it appears that stuff is going to be in there.
btw everyone what do you think is it worth buying and playing this mmo?
I was a bit dissappointed after this weekend. The story was decent, I can deal with the questing, the skills seem like a nice touch, and the little bit of thought it requires was a nice change of pace, but honestly I just couldn't get into it. I think the one thing that kept throwing me off all weekend was the combat and movement.
I think that if you enjoy the setting, got the extra money to throw away, or don't plan on buying anything else coming out soon then go for it IF you can get past some buggy. I can't seem to put my finger on what the problem I have with the combat so I can't provide any useful info there. Hopefully someone else will have felt the same way and found what exactly it is that is lacking.
I played the game for about four hours on Friday, six hours Saturday, and didn't have it in me to get back in on Sunday. I found that I spent just as much time playing Path of Exile (just a Diable rip off with added skills) as I did TSW that I've been somewhat looking forward to. So I only have 10 hours of play time which doesn't give me with much experience with the game. However, I am one of those people that think a game should be fun for me from the beginning to the end.
Perhaps I am looking forward too much to GW2 or maybe it is because it is the last MMO I played, but one of the first things I did when I saw a mark on the ground indicating a mob was about to activate an ability I double tapped a key to dodge. I read a post here after the last BWE and had to laugh as I remembered the post when I did it.
I made the decision to buy D3 this weekend to hold me over until GW2. Quite a bummer really. Hopefully things change over time, but I will be holding out on this one too. I just don't think it's worth the money.
Ragnar always said they are aiming for a different crowd with this game.
They are actually one of the few developers who got the message that WoW players will play WoW!
So The Secret World is trying to aim for a more "mature" crowd in the gaming community, with a tad more patience.
Oh stop it...
Age of Conan...nipples, decapitations...made for mature players.
Anarchy Online, rated M for mature...again, nipples, swearing and what not and out before WoW was a glint in someones eyes.
WoW has nothing to do with it, Funcom is Funcom. The game will be for mature players, the game will also not live up to its expecations, have a launch with more than average amount of bugs, be missing a great deal of gameplay, have higher than average times between updates, have updates that dont meet expectations, take forever to fix major issues and the list goes on and on.
Funcom is Funcom....just like fanboys will say the most outrageous things to make a game the second coming.
I read some othewr posts by JCTG and no mmo will make him happy. Seems he has issues with every MMO.

The female models are actually fully textured, Funcom just doesn't allow you to remove the "default" clothing to see them.
Also, some female mobs such as Medusa's show nipples. And of course Brontosaurs have giant puckered buttholes and Hammerheads ( big dinosaur things ) have big floppy udders hanging from them.
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-

Gamers who just enjoy a slow pace of gaming... enjoying the HP Lovecraft setting of the game, solving puzzles, uncovering mysteries, etc. Instead of the mainstream MMO crowd who like to race to max level and enter the endless gear grind mill. Like WoW, EQ2 and Rift already offer.
Do we really need YET ANOTHER race to cap / Endgame gear grind MMO? NO! Hell NO!
That's where The Secret World comes in..... offering something different for people like you and me, who got fed up and tired of WoW, EQ2 and all it's clones!
They are trying to appeal to horror fans looking for a game to play with others . However, they've succeeded in crating a horror wow clone with neat puzzle and investigative quests tucked away in kill 5 of this and do this 4 times then stir.
They aren't trying to appeal to someone who doesnt like wow, cause borrow the wow combat scheme? Instead of creating something that was related to the theme of the game. Every cthullu/horror based tabletop rpg i've been apart has very little combat, because the idea of combatting such horrors in traditonal ways plays out about as silly as it feels in the game. Zombie and man going toe to toe with one another. A shadow creature killing one perwson, like u, effortlessly and yet u with difficulty.
Think of how crazy that sounds. We want to do a mature game, not a wow game. Okay combat, oooh let's have have all these skills but limit their uses to tanking, damaging and healing. Forget that we have the opportunity to really add some depth, add different investigative skills, stealth skills.
Sorry my friend, but maybe you should go back to WoW and play that for a while again. Refresh your memory! And then come back and try out TSW again.
Saying TSW is a WoW clone with some puzzle and investigation quests tucked in is just plain wrong!
- TSW is not a themepark game! It has no level progression. Nor typical gear dependend progression.
- TSW has no endgame that involves and endless gear grind to create Uber L337 characters to WTF pawn other players in PVP or sit in Ironforge to show how L337 you are.
Need to go on??
Rest my case.
Just because the game lacks level progression, doesn't mean that it's not a themepark. The game is a themepark in every sense of the word when you consider how the content is presented. In a typical themepark game, you're gated from one quest to the other in a certain order, which is basically what happens here.
As far as the endgame goes, you stated what the endgame is not, rather than what the endgame is. So what is it?
They have started this game is a mixture of a snadbox and a Themepark since day 1 and I see both in the game so before you make these silly comments read for the win!
Do you people keep up or read before you comment, I would say NO!
I love the people who say OMG its Funcom FAIL!! iTS FUNNY how well Anarchy Online has done and is still online and it had a very bad release AOC had a bad release and its making money , did do we well because of Lead Designer was a Tard.
But the lead Designer is NOT even remotely the same guy... and people bash the game, do you people realize what the game designer does??? By these comments, I would say No...
Funny stuff,.! I love these forums, I love to watch people here hype a game up and then hate on it in beta and release and then they wait for the next game and do again and again, I bet none of you play any games, or you do play these games but you love to follow other trolls on this site, funny stuff. Its must be what you younger games do today for fun??
btw everyone what do you think is it worth buying and playing this mmo?
In it's current form? No. The game needs more development time. At least 3 months.
If Funcom does release it on June 19th, I'd wait until it goes free to play in about 6 months to a year. Because otherwise it would be a waste of money.

I'm glad I am not the only person who gives it that time frame for it to become F2P.
Additionally, quest-givers further on will have quests that are "locked" unless you have completed an earlier pre-requisite.
I noticed a few people have mentioned that. Can anyone confirm that is actually the case? I thought things where locked because they took you beyond the scope of the beta?
Having said that early on I did notice a couple of guys (fortune teller and the guy in the church) seemed to want you to do there quest chains in a certain order, I presumed for continuity of story (maybe wrongly)?
I suppose you never waste money on any stuff that you are not 100% sure will deliver then... ;-)
Seriously, the price of the game + 1 month subscription is equal to the price of having a few drinks out on town.
Easily worth the money if you spend just 1 weekend on the game! And I have no doubt that most people will spend much more time.
Yeah I may well do just that. I cant help feeling that we saw 10% of the game in this beta. 3 areas with three zones each = aprox 10%. Also can't help pondering whether Kingsmouth is TSW's Tortage. Probablly worth 30 quid to find out.

They've showcased a second area as big as Kingsmouth, by beyond that, no idea. A leap of faith for those who don't care to get burned once a while, I guess.

Not exactly locked. Some NPCs have two visible quests that they can give. The first of them can be a prerequisite for the next. Or the pre-requisite may be another quest from another NPC or from the main story line.

In TSW's case having to pay full price for the box + subs + item shop on top would be my guess. That's pretty much the reason I can't see anything but failure and early conversion to f2p for this game, its strengths just don't fit the business model of subscription based MMO at all.

Outside the ones locked for progression reasons from the same questgiver as you mentioned the only other locked quests I encountered were at the scrapyard and the one hanger at the airport. Which stayed locked so I would assume they're probably related to content meant to be taken on later after you've gone further into the main story or they're bugged so the devs locked them so folks didn't waste their time.

I read some othewr posts by JCTG and no mmo will make him happy. Seems he has issues with every MMO.
I think he forgot to have fun.
swearing and nipples in anarchy online? i love nipples! show me, show me!
The female models are actually fully textured, Funcom just doesn't allow you to remove the "default" clothing to see them.
Back when tattoos were first put in, some of the male tattoos were actually useable on female characters, and since the male tattoos were for the back, they left the chest exposed. http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ_0joelrjm6Ydeway0Sw6NSSNKINMq7Tj3LLLdb_h3w8wC-7NWVQ
Something will burn.-
-And on the 8th day, man created God.-
They have started this game is a mixture of a snadbox and a Themepark since day 1 and I see both in the game so before you make these silly comments read for the win!
In it's current form? No. The game needs more development time. At least 3 months.
If Funcom does release it on June 19th, I'd wait until it goes free to play in about 6 months to a year. Because otherwise it would be a waste of money.
I'm glad I am not the only person who gives it that time frame for it to become F2P.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Well I never said I was clever, I never brought up WoW, so not sure where WoW came from? I did say perhaps I'm one of the only ones who got it, ie took the time to read the post. You are the one going off on it.
You are needlessly rude and defensive and attacking me for no reason, I'll give you that
