I find it disgusting that you are glad people are losing their jobs, especially in this day and age where they can be hard to come by.
I don't find it disgusting at all. The more mediocre fucks that get fired opens the doors for people competent enough for the job at hand. A bad economy does not justify "welfare employment". Noone is entitled to hold their job just because they might starve without it. In fact, noone is entitled to a job period.
Guess it's safe to say your not part of the "occupy protestors"?
Anyways, I do commend EA for making that announcement. It at least comes across as heartfelt and that's the greatest complement I've ever given EA. I'm actually kinda shocked they posted it. See people I can give credit where I feel it's due.
It doesn't say who is loosing their job but we can pretty much bet it's not the decision makers. Those guys are so far up each other's asses that it will only take shareholders dumping every certificate they have to force the real culprits out and turn the company around after bankruptcy or a buyout.
You know they pay people to sound sincere. It's their job. Having known some of these PR people in real-life. I have serious doubts about any real empathy or sincerity. They just grabbed the 'oh we're so sorry card' off the rack, put it in an envelope and pretended they care.
Because, to me, if they really cared... They'd find a way to make it work. Companies that care find those ways... Companies that don't... Buh-bye...
I didn't say I believe them. I said that even making the effort shocks me but at least they posted something. I never would of expected a word out of them be it faked or real.
i see your point. I guess I should have been clearer. I don't think you're stupid or gullible. I'm just cynical that this is anything but a 'boo hoo' letter by people who just don't care about anything but themselves.
SWTOR failed because it sucked. It was a total WoW rippoff and the devs freely admitted it. People are losing jobs because they made a sucky game. That is capitalism. Next time they won't make quite so crappy of a game. I'm glad to see that this pile of crap failed because future developers will take notice and they will stop making WoW clones that nobody wants to play.
Arma 2 is a top seller on steam because of an extremely innovative mod that is like nothing else out there. People want cool new stuff, not boring rehashes.
TOR would have actually benefitted from being more like WOW actually, WOW wasn't a game only about the journey to level cap and story moments that's what TOR is.
^ if you are going to copy a game fine but at least do it better than what you are copying instead of completely half assed
Couldn't agree more. If you are going to make the same game then atleast be better.
I believe it's because the mods pretty much stick to the letter of their policy, which is to take action against users that DIRECTLY attack other users.
There are of course, no rules against attacking vaguely defined broad groups of users though...and that tends to be what a lot of folks do.
Guys, while this is a major story, remember to discuss the news constructively. There are many threads in which to express negativity about the game itself.

Well nothing is ever straight forward in release statements, you can decipher it many ways.
The truth is every game hires workers based on contracts, they finish their bit then that is it,so it is nothing out of the normal.Secondly they "claim" a significant team will remain on the game,my past experiences have shown this to be around 35 members, not large but giving the standards to which most every game makes xpacs/updates,they won't need many more.
Unless we can find cold hard facts that show these layoffs are related to anything finacial and not just your normal contracts or employee movement that was always projected to happen, there is nothing to worry about as for job losses.
I might add one more thing, that Greg guy is most likely a hired face to interact with the media, people. He is going to say things that sound politically correct but not be saying it with any conviction.Example if the game all of a sudden folded up shop in one year,is there any recourse to go after this Greg guy for promising a high quality game for years to come?NOPE bottom line is he can say whatever he wants, most won't even remember this statement he delivered in a week from now.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

When it comes to the MMO community, EVERY statement is remembered especially when the future turns out to be the opposite of said statement. I still remember the dev claims of "lots of guys beating on one boss isn't very heroic." If it turns out that no expansion or major xpacs happen, look for this guy's quote to be repeated over and over. Vindictivness is a big thing around these parts.
I find it disgusting that you are glad people are losing their jobs, especially in this day and age where they can be hard to come by.

You actually think the decision makers are the ones to suffer for their decisions? Open your eyes a little more :P
No, I don't. But I stand by my statement. Did some good people get let go? Most likely. As well as many who likely shouldn't have been there to begin with but got moved there from failed projects by EA to save on having to hire, and pay better salaries to, more competent individuals. Those worth a shit will likely find more work without too much problem, whether at another studio or freelancing/filling in for understaffed studios. While the game industry may not be an economy all its own, the chances of any really talented individual suddenly finding himself flipping burgers is exceptionally low. There will always be projects needing programmers, artists, etc.
it just really bugs me when people seem to think noone should ever lose their job "because of an economy" or some other reason. Again, noone is "entitled" to keep their job. Maybe I'm just an insensitive asshole, or maybe I'm just calling it the way it is. Everyone else can decide that for themselves.

You can see it in many ways, but...
First event: The EA suits declared that SWTOR is no longer in their "Top 5 Games" priority list.
Second event: Staff reductions are announced.
These 2 events may be completely unrelated, or they may be linked.
My take take on this ?
The accountants have analysed the trends, and the decision was that SWTOR's operating expenses have to be brought in line with expected reductions in revenue. The largest expense in any software project is staff salaries, so the team has been shrunk. This reduction in overheads is required to make the profit ratio a bit more favourable.
Perhaps EA are doing this now to mitigate the bad news that is going to appear in the next quarterly report ? Which is due soonish ?
People are getting laid off all over. I feel sorry for them all. Not so much for the people that made SWTOR the game it became. Not so much.
So because they made a game that you didn't personally like, or made decisions that you personally don't agree with, they deserve to lose their jobs, their livelihoods, and now these human beings need to go home and tell their families that their lives have been rocked.
It'll be on life support before the end of the year like Warhammer in its first year. Face it, the game was an unmitigated disaster from the get go. Some of us said this before the game launched. We told you how bad the game was. I came right out and said I could stomache beta testing this game it was that bad and deleted it from my HD and gave my beta key away. I was told to STFU and get off the forum boards. I was a troll. A hater.
Well guess the fuck what?! I was dead on. Put that in your fucking pipes and smoke!
Wow... way to focus on yourself, rather than the people affected by this layoff... true to form...

You actually think the decision makes are the ones to suffer for their decisions?
Yeah, I don't get that sentiment either. Guarantee most if not all of those let go had nothing to do with calling the shots in the main design and focus of this game.
Someone can think that no one is entitled to keep a job but, as well, neither the top brass responsible for ecomic disasters should.
But I suspect that those who engineered this disaster will hold on their stock options and paychecks while some decent (ex-) worker will have to look for something to eat tomorrow.

It seems there are currently enough people who don't think it is a bad product, as the game in whatever state it may be in is still up and running and surely enjoyed by those still paying for it.
I am not one of them, but you need to work real hard to distance your opinion and personal bias towards this game and have some basic human compassion for those who have lost their jobs.

Maintenance mod comes soon, exact same things are happening as with WAR. I am glad my prediciton was true, guess many TOR fanboys who flamed me all the time will now realise that TOR is going downhill fast.
This will actually be good for MMORPG genre, devs will realise they cant make lame WoW clones anymore and begin to innovate.
I just hope ppl learened their lesson and wont give money anymore to EA after all its we / you (since i m not buying their games) who keep EA and its crappy games alive.
Success or failure your arguement still does't explain how there are still folks who still find the enjoyment playing the game. It's our invesment, time and money, this goes for the next MMO many of choose to pick up.

Plan B is a spreadsheet somewhere with the happy medium of the employees they can keep for the revenu they are bringing in. I hate how companies reduce working people to digits in a report.
I hope it was the lead devs and managers at Bioware, and not the regular programmers and staff who get on with the work but don't make decisions.
SWTOR is dead because of the bad decisions of the people at the top. The bosses at Bioware SWTOR do not deserve a paycheck, and yes, they deserve to be fired and never work in the industry again.
Specifically, I hope the following were fired:
Erickson
Zoeller
Ohlen
Reid
Campbell
All their forum mods
You forgot (Gabe) Amantangelo and (Dallas) Dickinson.
I say good fucking riddance. God, I'd put baby's on spikes if I could be there to see specifically Georg Zoeller, James Ohlen and Gabe Amantangelo frog-marched out of the building by security.

So let's say BMW designs a new car... people on fhe factory floor assemble the car. The car doesn't sell well.
You want to fire all of the people on the assembly line because, despite them building the car that they were told to build, the car didn't sell well.
I don't know what you do for a living, but I hope you are never affected in this way. I wouldn't wish it upon anybody. Then again, I'm not filled with anger/spite/hatred towards any game that I play and don't like. I just move on. Too bad you can't manage to do the same.
I wonder if Diablo 3 was a deciding factor in the layoffs? It's been noted that D3 has caused a slight noticable decline in WoW amongst other games at launch, from personal observations.
Doubt it.
D3 hasn't been out long enough. Pretty sure this was in the works behind the scenes ever since they went over their last quarter's numbers and did some reassessment, projection, etc.
Layoffs take time for a multitude of reasons. It isn't unusual for a compnay to have it laid out several weeks to sometimes even months before they lay down the hammer.
I'd wager it's been in the works longer than that. There WAS another story about EA laying people off about 2 months go. Right around the time "The Messiah Patch" (1.2) was about to drop. The one where they yanked Ranked WarZones 8 hours before it dropped, then their patcher started deploying the patch too soon and then after they patched, they had to once again take the servers down for emergency maintenance....
Anyone seeing a trend? There are a MYRIAD of things that went wrong with SWTOR. First and foremost, EA. Secondly, many will say BW's complete inexperience with an MMO. I would argue they actually HAD some experience (a large proportion of their dev team came from Warhammer Online) but simply didn't learn from previous mistakes. Third, they set themselves up to fail with the hype. Fourth, they either have no QA or the person in charge of it needs to be fired. 6 months on and they STILL don't have a method for copying chars over to the PTS. Fifth, they militantly pushed their 'vision' of the game and how it should be played over what their customers wanted. Now, you can certainly make an argument that it's their game to do with as they please, but they were NOT producing something that most people wanted. Additionally, they quickly developed an antagonistic, intrangient attitude with their customers about things. Blizzard, for all their flaws, have learned over the years, how to introduce game mechanics and encourage the users to play them in the intended manner. BW did not.
It's their own friggin fault. They had their reputation, the reverence the IP is generally held in and a ton of money. I don't know how many more advantages or things going in their favor going into this. They simply bungled it.
And everyone that bought the game supported that company. Now that the game is on the decline and they have to lay people off because it was such a bad product you all feel sorry for them. Maybe if you all had stayed subbed they wouldn't be laying people off. Do I feel sorry. No...I don't. I never hyped their product. I never supoorted them. They produced a bad product. They do not deserve support nor money. In my opinion. You all thought differently and now people are losing their jobs and you feel sorry for them? What did you think would happen when you withdrew your support?
You were just playing victim to the same thing you're now supporting, forum warriors. Have a bit of tact, realize you won. It's not about feeling sorry for them, it's about being humble and not rubbing the loss of employment in the faces of the low on the totem pole employees who are seeing the axe right now.
What was all that ranting about with the treatment you received at the hands of forum posters? IF not people on forums are cold people who say mean things?
