How long before TSW goes F2P?

Grand_NagusGrand_Nagus Member UncommonPosts: 335

Its pretty obvious that F2P is the direction that the MMO industry is heading, and the recent news of TOR only reinforces that. With that in mind, how long do you think it will be before TSW goes F2P? And do you think they actually *plan* on going F2P after they have recouped the development cost from box sales and subs?

I would say between 1-2 years, but a solid guess would be that it is inferred as a 'surprise' around it's 1-year anniversary.

Every game these days is just sub to start in order to milk definite funds from people before they go F2P as a backup plan when the servers empty out. Diehard fans aren't enough to keep development going, and by 'development', I mean other projects they tend to use funding from their other games on. EVE money is paying for Dust, every SOE game is paying for PS2, and AoC was paying for TSW. The question now is; what is TSW paying for?

If a game goes F2P after initial release of not being F2P I will never touch it.

    1 year 2 months 3 days 10 minutes 21 seconds and a quarter.

    Why so specific?

Well if we're guessing we might as well make it a bit of fun.

Probably around the same time AoC took to go free to play, or maybe even longer since it's better than AoC.

Funcom currently have two games that are F2P which started out as P2P games. Both went F2P about 3 years after release. So, maybe in 2015 TSW will go F2P?

Its not an IP. They are using code/people/etc  from their other games, so it shouldn't cost that much to make. It might have enough appeal to certain mmo'ers that it can sustain itself for a while.

Too good of a game with 7 years of content planned. I don't see this one ever going F2P.

I would say 2 to 3 years also. its a real fun game haveing a blast once you deside on a build. So much to pick from .

I'd give this one 1-2 years. It's got some serious issues but there's a lot about that game that can't be found anywhere else. I think that'll keep people coming back long enough to hold out on F2P for a while. But technology is constantly evolving and improving, and 2013 is going to be as big for games or bigger than this year was. I don't know how well TSW will stack up against both the competition in the second half of this year, and what's coming in the next one.

I might be overly optimistic, though. With F2P becoming so popular, there's a lot of people that didn't mind paying monthly that simply won't anymore, because they have too many options otherwise. The gamer pool is just further diluted at this point.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but paying for a video game does not make a person "honorable". That depends entirely about what you do in the "real world"  ;)

It *is* an IP, it's just not one they have to license from the original rights-holders, like AoC. At least, I don't think they have to.

I give it a year, maybe two with Funcom because they refuse to admit things.  I jumped in the beta today and was very happy I did not pre-order this one.  It reminds me of the matrix online with its graphics and the combat is horribad.  Lots of the fanbois on this one will be singing a different tune in three months when they go through all the content and realize there is little replayability just like they did with SWTOR.

A year sounds about right. 2 years max. The presence of the cash shop at release in addition to the subscription fee is a good way to ease people into the whole F2P thing. Sure, it'll start out with cosmetic and quality of life items, like clothing and XP potions and such. ~6 months down the line the weapons and armor from the pre-order packs will find their way onto the cash shop. So will the pre-order pets. Then, once the game goes F2P, the TSW cash shop will look similar to AO's and AoC's cash shops.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, the game has some decent stories but the combat, the character models and animations and even the way quests, inventory and action bars are handled is not AAA material. It's obvious that Funcom tried to save money on this one and it's going to bite them in the ass.

That's the biggest problem with LOTRO.

The game is horrible IMHO. I predict it will go F2P before SWTOR does.

The complexity of the PVP is amazing though.

You Don't need replayability in tsw by design. There are no twinks.
    Swtor? Lol.

I was really glad I didnt preorder also....Was a real letdown, had high hopes for this......I expect it to be f2p within 2 years...... Its too story driven and I expect it to go down the same road as SWTOR.....Within 3-4 months players will run out of things to do.....

4-6 months.  There isnt a doubt in my mind that funcom developed this title around a F2P model. They will milk people for the box and the LTS and once the box sales stop it will be F2P.  I'm not saying it is a bad game just that Funcom now knows that F2P is very profitable for them.

The same thing you do when you've watched every last episode of Lost.

Repeat them all until you "get it", or realize there is nothing to "get" and go on a tirade about the ending.
