ArenaNet Halts First Party Sales

bookworm438bookworm438 Member Posts: 647

"Ensuring the best possible play experience for our fans is our highest priority. We’ve said before that we would be willing to temporarily disable first-party digital sales if we felt our high player concurrency may compromise player experiences. We have now reached that point.

Effective immediately we have disabled sales via buy.guildwars2.com. To be clear, box and digital sales are still available via our retail partners. We are tracking our concurrency closely while expanding our infrastructure. We’ll re-enable first-party digital sales as soon as we feel that we can do so safely. ~RB2"

Yep, I wonder how many copies did they already sell for them to make this drastic move! :D

Maybe they already passed the ncsofts expected sales numbers for the 1st year already? XD

They should have waited till it was finished to release TBH.

This being reactive rather than proactive. Who knows when they will iron out the bugs. Things are getting worse rather than better.

Really good move IMO. Servers been abit shaky lately, had terrible lag 2 nights ago. Our server is full now though.

It sounds like its not so much the bugs, but the amount of players. They are experiencing a situation similar to what Blizzard did with WoW. Except they are trying to stop some of the incoming players to help it instead of selling more copies and overloading the servers even more.

In reality it's getting better, not worse. Anet has added much needed account security and the AH is now available to 25% of players to name just 2 improvements but hey, go ahead and hate away ;)

Your probably right. For a second there, I thought Arenanet might actually be concerned that they released a broken and unfinished game.

Yeah... I've always hated that "Game is to popular and we have to many players" bug. I can't believe it cropped up again...

umm... what? i have had no issues with the game besides the ah being down. well, there was a bugged de, but i only ran into it once. but your issue is that they're trying to stop their servers from being unholy smoking wrecks so that people can keep playing while they make ready for more players? buddy, if that's failure i never want to succeed.

Do you know what concurrent means?

The phrase "we would be willing to temporarily disable first-party digital sales if we felt our high player concurrency may compromise player experiences" means that they will stop selling the game through their online shop due to too many players for the amount of servers.

This has nothing to do with the bugginess of the game and everything to do with how many people want to log in at the same time (i.e. Even ArenaNet is overwhelmed by the number of players/# of copies sold).

Why do you think the servers have been such a sh*tstorm? That's right, too many damn players

It's not a bug, it's called servers being under too heavy a load...

Did the world run out of servers? Or did people run out of common sense?

Why don't you try the game and see how's it actually "broken"? Oh that's right, you can't right now...

The game isn't "unfinished" nor is it "broken"... Diablo 3 was broken and unfinished in my opinion and I hated myself for buying it just 3 days after release. Even tho there's sometimes lagg on some parts of the map, since there's really alot of players in the same spot (and I'm talking over 100 players in PvE areas sometimes, on the same spot!) and the trading post was brought down because it was overloaded and it crashed, I'm not regreting anything and I'm more than satisfied with the state of game... It's working better than any other mmo at release so far, but haters gonna hate ;)

This is actually really good news, and shows that ArenaNet is really working hard on retaining players with quality service.  For those that don't understand it looks like they want to ensure their server infrastructure can handle so many players playing at once.  Think of it like this.  Say you are in a waterpark (ignore fire code for a minute) and the owner says "Let as many people in as possible, who cares if the lines become 4 hours long".  Now imagine the same waterpark that says "We COULD make more money by letting more people in, but I would rather our existing customers have a better experience, so stop letting people in".  That's the water park I want to go to :)

Should I have added a sarcasm sign? Why would you assume I thought having players was actually a bug? lol.

i think common sense. i might check on yours if i were you. just a suggestion. remember how things take time to organize? setting up new servers for a game that's just launched takes time and effort, both of which anet has to commit to supporting their fledgling mmo, too.

Yes... because Anet bought every server out there. Why buy a set number of servers based on a projected number just buy as many as humanly possible and hope they fill up....

Agreed....they have already added 2 Spanish and 1 German server so they are being proactive in this area. About the only thing Anet have done wrong is woefully under predict the number of people that purchased the game.

Broken and unfinished? Are you even playing? Yeah the game is horribly broken.

Yes because everybody just purchased a copy today so Arenanet was blindsided by the sudden surge in sales.

Checking your previous posts you spend a LOT of time talking about a game you clearly dislike.  Why spend the time and energy bashing something you don't like?

DO you play this game? Yes or no? Or are you just telling what you heard is wrong?

If you are challenging any of what I just said, then I question whether you have played the game past the first zone.

Yeah... because they waited till launch day to get servers and set them up. I mean what MMO gets servers before they get players... drr...

Seriously though, they had a set number of what they can handle. They got close to that number and planned to stop sales when they got close to it so they could compensate. Yet, you want to try and spin it as a negative and say it's Anets fault for not having some plan in place... which they clearly had lol.

They were blindsided because they had a plan in place... Some logical thinking you have there my friend.
