Amazing how people do not read Anets actual posting as mentioned a ton of times it is not a clever tactic to boost sales, or to stop the bleeding of a spiralling out of control game in fact that is why they are taking these measures and ONLY Anet/Ncsoft is not selling the digital on their website...all others like bestbuy and gamestop etc all still will sell their digital copies if you want one.
But imo Anet cant win for losing as if they did not do this and servers started to domino and crash and they wuld have to take the whole infrastructure down for days or more and then people would be mad at that....I say hats off to them for being up front and honest and game is awesome no lagg here just a few minor crashs for me since aug 25th.
been playing these mmos for 17 years now and this is one has brought a little bit of that awe back from the old mmos that started it all.

Possibly.
EA did this trick with SWTOR. Before launch they claimed that sales would be limited, but after launch I'm guessing it was just a "SELL SELL SELL!" mindset. Sales overloaded the servers in that case, causing new ones to be purchased by EA. In the end I guess if I knew I had a crappy product and just wanted to make some money, I would have done what EA did. But I would be going to church everyday for the rest of my life.

this seem like a way for them to sell box sells. I am sure it cost money to make those physical sells, and need people to buy that over the digital sells.

TOR did sell amazingly the first few days and Blizzard actually did the same thing with Wow way back. As a MMO dev you have to guess how much server space you need and if you guess wrong it can cost you.
Lowering the sales 2-3 days while you set up more servers is really not that strange, it was actually hard to find Wow copies for several months after release.

What is in there for them?
Players that go buy digital will either wait, not buy in a while or go grab a copy from a store that then wont be there for someone to some random dude to see it store.
Ah, and they will make less money.
For what?
Showing on top of the charts?
Might as well just buy a few thousands copies themselves like it is done for many things...

because physical boxes need to be sold.
I really cant believe you are asking this right now.
plz just edit your post out, and I will edit out yours as well in this post. Because its ridiculous.

So you are saying the game isn't selling and there are piles upon piles of plastic boxes with a code inside and a GW2 cover sitting...

And was that the excuse fpr stopping the sales during the beta period as well?
Or maybe we just imagining the long WvW queues, overflow server all the time, massive lag spikes in some servers or the new servers being added,,,
Ah and why not stop the digital sales of partners as well to clear the boxes...

I swear on my life, i had just broken down and decided to pick up the game and try it out, despite all my misgivings and my utter and extreme hatred for the hype train for this game.
Now i'm back on the fence again. I understand why they did it, but they should just do what most MMO's do and set up a log in queue. Not allowing people to purchase your product unless you buy the ultra expensive version smacks of money grabbing and just plain bullshit.
I'm trying not to get pissed, becuase lets be honest, i wasnt excited about this game anyways. But, i did want something to tide me over until Storm Legion hits, and now i can't buy the game?
Um what? They stopped ALL sales through their website. IIRC the collectors edition sold out months ago. It hasnt been available through their site for awhile (if you look at the site, the link is just "Learn More" but it isnt actually purchasable right now). The only copies available now are from a retailer, whichever versions they have available. Theres nothing at all about only being able to buy the most expensive version so not sure how you came to that conclusion.
Add to that:
Its B2P with no monthly sub
Most of whats in the cash shop can be looted or earned as rewards
You can exchange in game money for gems so you dont have to pay $ if you dont want to for the rest of the stuff
Nothing in the shop that makes it P2W
a history with GW1 of delivering a good B2P game and a good cash shop with no P2W features, etc
Yeah... still dont get the whole money grubbing thing
You're right, i didnt realize they halted all sales, all i saw was the first two editions greyed out saying "sold out" but the collector's edition wasnt. so i assumed they still allowed you to purchase that. /shrug. Either way. I dont recall in my post mentioning anything about the cash shop, p2w, or anything along those lines. I was just saying *if* it had been the case they blocked sales of all but the most expensive edition it would of smacked of money grab.

They should have waited till it was finished to release TBH.
This being reactive rather than proactive. Who knows when they will iron out the bugs. Things are getting worse rather than better.
The game has been almost entirely bug free for me to level 45, when you exclude the server and infrastructure issues. Those issues could never have been fully realized until launch, so waiting any longer for release would have been pointless.
They did BWEs and stress tests to try to simulate the strains of launch the best they could and they did tweak things as they went. The last BWE was very smooth and the issues we have now were not issues then.
The test now is how quickly they can fix the issues and scale their infrastructure to handle demand for the game. I admit I'm getting a bit impatient on the Trading Post, but I have faith they will get it sorted out pretty soon. If it's not working 90% of the time by the end of next week, then I may be a little less forgiving.
I'm still having a blast though, which helps to minimize the frustrations.
Fanboy has bug free launch SHOCKER! in other news players cannot log in, sustomers cannot register, players getting hacked, botting problem (NCsoft botting problem? thats a shock) trade post is up and down like a prostitutes knickers, mail systems off line, guild features don't work, players cannot play with their friends, DE's bugging out, WvWvW queues are into multiple hours...

In other news those are not really denying the fact that people are having fun with the game and when you have fun that kind of stuff is easy to overlook. You propably are not having fun, thats ok. It's not for everyone and game is not going anywhere, it will be there week or two later with most of the issues fixed.

OK as we all know this is standard procedure in MMO land that problems at launch are always fixed swiftly in thye first few weeks after launch games like SW:TOR, War, AOC, Aion, STO, SWG, VG:SOH, POTBS, all prove this.... wait a minute thats not true is it? so keep the faith my friend it will get you through that valley of death as ANET will be the first to buck this decade long trend in MMO's i'm sure.

Please stop with the half baked conspiracy theories, they're completely without any basis in fact and utterly ridiculous. For those of you posting "just add more servers" you're showing you have absolutely no idea what's involved in adding new hardware to a massive infrastructure that's supporting a complex software client.
While Anet are "out buying more servers" please go out and buy yourself a clue before posting such nonsense.

I havent experienced a lot of issues Ive seen people post about, including Nvidia performance issue even though I have a Nvidia GTX 560 Ti. Funny thing about your list is several of those things are either a) intermittent issues experienced by a small portion of players, not gamebreaking widespread issues b) not an "issue", they announed things like bringing mail down. mail isnt broken, they intentionally took it down because of the reports of hacking, and the only way to steal stuff from an account and send it to another is through mail. This stops the hackers from being able to steal peoples loot for themselves while they work on increasing security.
Trade post isnt going "up and down" either. Once again, intentional and announced byt hem ahead of time. They are opening it up to random groups of players and going through rotations to do some testing with various groups before they bring the full thing back online.
