I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun. I just know that a lot of players wouldn't want their characters killed of IC for money/gold. Though, really, I suppose it just comes down to the people that you make the deals with.
Yeah. So, really, it'll just be something you have to work out. Maybe killing them could represent breaking their legs or beating them up bad or something.
I'll vote with dollars for any company willing to invest heavily in CE staff and heavier staff:player ratios again.
So yes!
But...I suspect a kickstarter-funded startup is not the company most likely to provide that? Could be wrong, hope so.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I can't wait until we do get the backers forums, that way we can consolidate all the people from here and reddit that support an rp server. Then we can battle the nay-sayers that don't together. It'll be fun!
MJ said we can burn corpses, I have been inspired to RP as someone obsessed with burning corpses to prevent them from coming back to life and getting past my giant ice wall.
Earlier you asked what RP rules/format would folks want? Well, seeing as a majority of folks interested have played DAoC and that the RP server rules for DAoC seemed fair I would suggest those as a starting place. I know I've suggested them as a basis for other games that were thinking about RP servers. I played on Percival at launch and loved it immersion wise.
As you might imagine, I love the idea of RP servers but I also do not like how RP servers are pretty bad on the MMORPGs I've played over the last ten years. One idea I've toyed with over the years is to have a strict RP server that has an extra price tag associated with it. FYI, we have not discussed this idea at CSE so before anybody jumps to conclusions, there are no plans for this right now. In exchange for a higher fee the players would get stuff like:
1) In-game GMs running events, enforcing rules.
2) Very strict naming policy (possibly even only allow generated names).
3) Strict guildelines for chat systems.
Lots more but I need to get back to work.
It wouldn't be an "Everquest Legends" setup nor that price tag but enough to cover the staffing required to deal with the issues as they occur (and by that I mean real time not file a protest, wait a week). This RP server wouldn't involve lots of new coding, areas, etc. but really just extra staff and some really good tools.
Anyway, just a thought.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
the thing about RP servers in general is, the game is not a role playing game. its an rpg. Now here me out.
I've played an actual role playing game before, it was called Dark Ages, just a small 2D game that was made by Nexon(before they owned MapleStory and went shitty and just after peoples money). It's now owned by Kru and the game has since been thrown to the crapper. But it had it all. Player-political system, Player-events were completely common all the time, not just by the vast few. They even had a religion system in the game run by the players.
The game couldn't have been included any more role play cause it was so chock full of it.
in todays mmo's that feature RP servers, they're not role play games. they're just mmo's with a extra server tacked on for the "RPers" to kind of band together and do their thing and thats it. But most true role players want a game that has role play features at its core like Dark Ages has/had.
I don't know what my point of this post is so yea...if you're an RPer and you didn't experience the joy of Dark Ages 10 years ago, i feel sorry for you it was an amazing game.
Thank you for continuing to push for a RP server. I was on Guinevere in Hibernia back in the day, and the RP ruleset made that community very strong. My best memories are the role-playing in the guilds I was in. It didn't matter if we were in the cursed forest killing for salvage drops or out in the frontier taking keeps in the name of our small guild, it was the characters and the people that made those experiences so special.
It's awesome that we reached the halfway point, but we still have a ways to go. I am still confident that CU will be funded. I appreciate those of you that are helping to keep this thread on the first page. It's very much appreciated.
@Khala: Actually, someone asked me that but DAoC did have a good ruleset, thank you for posting that.
@Sephiroso: Okay...you say it's not a role playing game but that it's an rpg. RPG stands for Role Playing Game though...so you are saying that it both is and is not. There are a lot of different types of role playing games out there. Games that allow you to take up the role of your character in some form or another. These are Pen and Paper games, single player games, and MMO's. There are even forums that are dedicated to rp.
MJ himself feels there should be an rp server because this game will lend itself very well to rp. I mean, there is going to be player housing, crafting classes, player run shops and even the inns that some of the backers have purchased. Friar Jon is a wonderful example of someone that is going all out with their inn, though he is working with limited lore at this time. So tell me, what is it that keeps this from being an role playing game?
The rp community is what the players make of it. Yes, DAoC had a wonderful community. Other games have had wonderful rp communities as well, though, it is not only limited to DAoC. What I see here, though, is a chance to ensure that we have a game with an rp server where the GM's support the rp and enforce the ruleset. Only time will tell if we succeed, but I'm confident that we will.
@Deacon: Thank you for your post, it's very blunt. XD
@Kermichii: Thank you for sharing that. That is exactly the sort of rp community that I want to build here. A community that can have just as much fun sitting around an inn sharing their stories as they do when they are out in the field battleling protect, or take, a keep. I will do everything within my power to make certain that we get an rp server to help build more memories like the ones you have from your time in DAoC.
I agree it is the players / the community they form regardless of the game. I am especially looking forward to Role playing in CU b/c honestly I did enjoy DAoC the best and I think CU will be even better for all the reasons Athilea laid out.
So excited, please keep spreading the word on both Kickstarter and RP Players Unite forum.

I'm not much of a RPer, but I do like naming policies enforced. Hate seeing name like ipwnsusoooohardcore, bigbootytroll, wowsucksballs, etc.
I'd support a RP(heavy) server and maybe a RP Lite/Strict Naming server for those of us that are naming elistist?
Just please don't let me walk into Briarsboon Inn and see 2 naked toons upstairs whispering to each other...

I agree with both points - Wazluk!
Good morning RP'ers.
Thank you for showing your support!
@Ice: I'm not sure. MJ is behind an rp server, but he's not going to do it unless the backers show that they want it.

I'm sure MJ has access to those RP server rules.
