What's your point? They're better than me at LoL? Duh. I was ranked top 30 in the world on fight night champions ps3, I didn't call it a sport, nor consider myself an athlete solely based upon that fact.
I have issue with calling it a sport, but as I stated in another post since I consider something like chess to be a sport (stamina, determination, skill, intelligence) I can't look the other way on MOBAs. I will never ever call the people playing these games athletes though.
This whole argument to me is just stupid. This means that every 8-12 year old kid playing CoD on xbox is now playing a sport. "No mom, I don't need to go outside and be active, the US govt says what I'm doing is a sport, so I must be an athlete. Now get me more hot pockets". This means that in a single swoop there are more people playing "the sport of" video games than all other prior sports combined.
---This is for ALL GAMES isn't it? Meaning If I challenge some friends to a rousing game of hello kitty island adventure score comparison (or whatever the hell you actually do in that game) we're infact playing a sport, and are now athletes.
I can read, so I must be smart enough to join mensa?
Pathetic attempt at irony aside, do you consider soccer played on a field by a couple of kids a sport or a game? Do you consider a bout of football between family members in a backyard a sport or a game? Here's the difference in it: Unless it is in a official and competitive setting you can't really call video games sports, you call them games, if the 12 year old is a prodigy at a Counterstrike tournament able to keep up with people twice his age and win games for his team and he's a athlete in my book, if he is a toxic little shit on XBLA ordering for hot pockets from his too good natured mom then he's a gamer.
Context in this is crucial because just like any older sports video games can be either games or sports ( some people run for fun, others run as part of a sport). It may seem like a minute difference when games are concerned but, just like in professional sports, gaming tournaments are rigorously monitored to maintain fair conditions where cheating and other means of assuring wins cannot happen.
Why wouldn't I consider those examples a sport/game? If you've ever played any sort of backyard sport you would know that NO ONE ever plays to lose. If I play in a rec basketball league with people of all ages and there is no referee it's not a sport/game?
Professional eaters are more athletic than professional gamers. Physical, Mental, Stamina. You show me a 12 year old that can put down more hot dogs than kobayashi and I'll point and say "there's an athlete". Calling a 12 year old who could be 4'10 200lbs but is good at a FPS an athlete is a joke. By your account those tween girls who are in the texting competitions are athletes.
I already said I have to concede on calling gaming a sport because I feel certain ways about games like chess. You do not have to be a professional anything to be called/considered an athlete that's why there are people we call "professional athletes". But calling someone an athlete just based on playing video games (because it's now recognized as a sport by the US govt [2 weeks ago they weren't athletes, but magically now because a piece of paper was signed they are]) is just silly.
No more silly than someone able to run around with a ball good being paid orders of magnitude better than doctors, scientists, artists, etc. It is a joke of modern society to even split things up so arbitrarily and it is mostly based on human insecurities.

No. They are athletes. They train their body.
Definition of ATHLETE
Noun A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.
Also:
Being paid highly has nothing to do with being an athlete. I stated before that you can just be an athlete. Do you think cross country runners get paid more than doctors? C'mon.
If you want to debate salaries among professional athletes compared to average joes you're going way too far off topic.

League of Legends is now considered a sport ergo professional LoL players are athletes.
2 weeks ago they weren't athletes, but now they are because someone signed a piece of paper. Going by this then yes all of those 12 year old kids playing CoD right now are athletes. 30% of People in the US obese, but as long as they play CoD or LoL they are athletes. I know some guys with man boobs, does this make them girls?

I know change is hard, but in 10 years this will be completely mainstream. E-sports are growing very fast. You better start getting used to it, cause they are here to stay.

So let me see if I get this straight.
You acknowledge that it is a sport but take issue with the fact of calling them "Athletes" cause the government signed the right for these players to get visas to come and play here in the United States.
Your argument makes no sense. You know your wrong but continue to protest to the nature of it all. Guess what? Those kids who are playing CoD right now and whipping your ass? Can be athletes and be proud of it. If they are truly talented and have the dedication and drive to do this at a Pro level then why is the title so exclusive?
Its been brought up time and time again how is this any different from other sports of the mind? Chess, Poker, etc?
Your simply hating. For no reason that you can back up with logic and fact.
Exactly what is it your protecting? The honor of the title of "Athlete" this magical idea in your mind what makes an athlete?
I see no difference in the 2 sports. Both require dedicating and skill.
I can't throw a football 50 yards.
I don't know the best strategy in every game of Cod I play.
Both of these things I could learn to do, but professionals take the time to learn to do these things far beyond average skill levels to benefit their teams at competitions with serious cash and serious media attention.

I played sports my entire life growing up, I played video games growing up as well. I promise you I did more of both than most others. I will never consider myself an athlete for staying up all night playing XYZ game. I consider myself an athlete because I am physically fit and participate in ATHLETIC EVENTS.
I'll let you browse that and see events that are characterized by athletes for yourself^. Also note that every definition has the word PHYSICALLY in it.
Athletic:
1. Of or befitting athletics or athletes.
2. Characterized by or involving physical activity or exertion; active: an athletic lifestyle; an athletic child.
3. Physically strong and well-developed; muscular: an actor with an athletic build. See Synonyms at muscular.
What your issue is? I don't understand.
P.S I like how you put in learning strategy in CoD and throwing a football 50 yards as examples. You do understand that you can't just LEARN to throw a football 50 yards. It takes actual exercise and training PHYSICALLY to do such.

Which is what I've been saying, thank you. You can be an athlete and play games. Being an athlete in the simplest of definitions means you're physically fit. You can be an athlete who's a gamer. But saying someone is an athlete because they play games? Just no.
These guys: SportAccord decide who is and who is not an Olympic athlete and what is and what is not an Olympic sport. They classify billiards and chess as sports. Billiards for the dexterity and chess for the mind.
If billiards and chess can be sports, then video games can be sports too. You guys can argue about that until you're blue in the face, but the experts classify things that are like video games as sports, so they will probably include video games soon.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I know, this discussion has gotten very confusing and a war off deinitions.

In every definition of athlete the word "physical" is present.
athlete [?æθli?t]n
1. (Individual Sports & Recreations / Athletics (Track & Field)) a person trained to compete in sports or exercises involving physical strength, speed, or endurance
2. a person who has a natural aptitude for physical activities
The people who are posting the definitions of "athlete" besides myself, are omitting or ignoring the physical in all of the definitions.
Do yourself a favor and give it the eye-test. Person A is sitting in a chair 4'10 300lbs and holding a controller. Do you consider this person an athlete?

Some centuries ago being Thin was a sign of poverty amd ugliness. But the paradigm changed and so can the definiton of what constitutes an athelete.
Like i said, change is hard but you people have to come to terms with this changing world.

Sure and some day fitness in sports will also be associated with being overweight and fat right? i mean anything can happen? so many Americans are suffering from obesity but i guess they all are athletes as long as they play LOL sitting in front of PC all day long.

The purest definition of a athlete is "Someone who plays sports." so kindly refer to how a video game is seen to see if that person is an athlete or not. Enjoy trying to argue semantics.

It is not about semantics but trying to twist the meaning of what it is to be an athlete. Sitting on your fat ass all day long and playing video games is not being 'athletic'.
And people surely don't need US government to tell them otherwise, a country which has largest population of obese people. if that is not ironic then i don't know what is.
