"Active account" in MMOs has always meant a user currentlyactive in the game, usually tracked via logins. (time frame varies, usually month, in this case a week)

Definitely not the # of accounts created.

EDIT: I'm sorry, I missed that they took these numbers down, making any debating over them pointless.

Hmm? If my "active account" is a misinterpretation, your meaning is nowhere better. This is the internet after all.

Yes i am 100% sure its misleading, i can translate the sentence, it means

"weekly active users: 2.5 million (times people do it)" so ya its obviously misleading, the words before the number are big while the words means logings here is small, you can see what they are trying to do.

its like saying US DOLLARS I OWN : ONE MILLION                          cent.

The big "DOLLARS" means nothing since the real unit for one million is cent.

Is it this? Found on baidu baike

I can see where you are going. Explaination for non Chinese readers: this means "number/total of human times (like visited, used, or in this case, login)". It is not a direct translation of "login", but the meaning should applies here.

A player can "use/visit/login" to GW2 client once, and it will count as one user for that week. If the same user login 1000 times to his/her only account during that week, it is considered 1000 users, even it is physically one user. AKA repeated attempts to login from the same player is counted as seperated unique users. I presume a normal player will log in an average 10 times over a course of 7 days.

WOW this thread is getting exciting again! Anyone wants to try to boast about the new Facebook and Youtube hits?

Edit: BTW I am aware those numbers are BS. Not just misleading, but pure advertisement and marketing BS. Neverwinter for example is the newest BSer.

Interesting. That's for the clear up

Does it really matter? Those numbers aren't even up anymore. It isn't like anyone that was based in reality thought it was 2.5 million weekly users anyway. Obviously there was something up with those numbers because they have been replaced with facebook and youtube hits.

Google translate says the facebooks numbers are 100 million likes. I think Google translate is broken. :(

Anyway, my uncle works at ANet and I got to see the real numbers but I can't tell you guys what they are but it's a lot.

I don't know if it's true or not about your uncle, but if it is, is he willing to adopt? image

I'm just sitting back and waiting on the official milestone Colin mentioned they're close to releasing. Should be interesting.

It's funny they took those numbers down lol... I guess they realized 2.5million logins a week isn't something you want to brag about when you've sold 3million copies.

Based on average gaming habits that amounts to 300-600k active players...

Ugh... again with the rectally extracted numbers. 3M was what, eight months ago? And where are you getting the "average gaming habits" data for games that require no subscription and release new content every two weeks anyhow? I wouldn't mind seeing your reference material.

Lol... it's funny how colin recently still referred to that 3million number, and they have not hit the 4million milestone yet...

I've seen your posts, you are super biased... which is probably why you believed they could have 2.5million active players... cause in your world that is somehow realistic.

You have evidence they haven't hit 4M yet? Colin stated in a recent interview that they were close to releasing another sales milestone based on a number they had targeted but never said what that number was. 4M seems likely, but it could be 3.5M, 5M, we won't know until they release it. 3M is the most recent "official" number given, but it's also an 8 month old number.

Hell yeah I'm super biased, and good luck finding a post with me denying that. I'm pretty sure I've never latched onto the 2.5M as gospel, waiting for the official ANet statement, but I do think it's possible if sales are closer to the 4M (or higher) range when you consider the business model (no sub) and the fact that new content is being released every two weeks. If they're indeed close to or at 4M sales then 2.5M logging in at least once per week definitely seems viable. It seems less likely in the unlikely event that sales have stagnated since the turn of the year and they're holding steady at the 3M number. Again, we won't know until they actually release the numbers, and that's my fully biased opinion blended with what I consider fact.

A bad game in his opinion that he bought, but from some of the posts I've seen made I'm not confident he's actually played the game, definitely not recently.

Bwahahaha 83% still playing! Of the eight people I know that bought the game, including me, not a single one has logged in in six or more months. And reading through this forum I can see that I'm not the only one. Those numbers are complete and utter hogwash.

I guess the GW2 fanboys need artificial emotional support to justify continuing to play.

Those whom I know that actually bought the game:

    Me

    My older sister

    My younger sister

    My bestfriend

My guild mates (19 other people)

Some programming students at my local college I hang out with between classes (4)

Of those listed, how many still play:

    None

So, either we're in the minority or something is wrong with these numbers? Perhaps chinese only?

This thread is still going on?

Let's put into perspective : using 2.5 millions logins per week, if each unique players log in on average 10 times per week, that means 250k of active players, which is "not bad" considering the box sales is near 4 million as someone keep claiming. And, average gameplay time every week per player will be about 14.2  hours (using the 508428/day * 7 days), which sounds logical.

Again, using 2.5 millions logins per week, if each login is indeed unique, that means 2.5 million players login only ONCE during a given week. Talk about the extreme of casual gameplay. And that means 1.42 hours every week per player.

That is why BS numbers are BS numbers. The only number that is believable and acceptable is the 3 million box sales as proclaim by ANet.

The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.

I fired up GW2 for the first time in 6+ months and either there's a new "hub" location or there is WAY fewer people on my server now.  I might fire up a new toon for giggles to waste some time while waiting for FFXIV and that's more of a test - seeing how populous the noob areas are compared to back when the server was hoppin.

Ultimately, I think GW2 is a good game, it's just not really a MMORPG (I consider it a massively single player online game), or it's not the kind of MMORPG me or anybody I know wants to play.  Sounded good in theory, didn't work out in practice.  Many of our crew didn't even hit cap before they had enough.  It turns out we like to group and do structured grouping, and GW2 just wasn't cutting it in that regard.  5 soloists sharing a chat and instance just isn't the same.

Anyways, I'm not totally hip to where GW2 would be drawing its numbers from but it sounds kind of like bliz with WoW.  Tell us the numbers for the more typical NA/EU/AUS areas.  Inflating numbers with alternate business models and slightly different products as Bliz does with WoW is cheese.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

And other people have said that everyone they know who bought the game is still playing, including myself, and it's true in my case.  Fact is, it doesn't mean squat in the grand scheme.  Random forum stats never do.
