Simply classic. Knowing Chinese language can actually shut the mouths.
What's the difference between 2.5M Active Users and 2.5M Active Accounts?
active users means that the users are actively logging into the game and play. (this is what most of the readers had interpreted)
active accounts just means that the account is active/activated, but does not account for whether the user logs in or not. So this will not include those banned/terminated/unactivated accounts.

mmmmm.... active accounts....
How they define "active accounts" for a game that don't have subscription and game accounts? Each time I buy gems with real money I need retype all my cc data...
Make no sense they use the word "account" if GW2 don't have accounts...
zhuei2, I am trying not doubt your knowledge of chinese, but your knowledge of GW2 have a serious deficiency. Like some people here that think GW2 have only 50 levels or that guild window permit see when guild members logged last time.
Anyway, I advice evyone to use google and search for words "user" and "account" with "chinese translation". It is easy, fast and free.
You will see they are diferent words, respectivelly "Yònghù" and "Zhànghù" that use diferente ideograms. And the ideogram used in the official chinese GW2 page is "Yònghù", that google translate as "user".
As I had replied in someone's question:
active users means that the users are actively logging into the game and play. (this is what most of the readers had interpreted)
active accounts just means that the account is active/activated, but does not account for whether the user logs in or not. So this will not include those banned/terminated/unactivated accounts. It does not matter whether the user has bought any gems.
Think of like Neverwinter. Every activated account is considered "active", whether the user still logs in or not. That is how PWI defines their "2 million players strong!!!"
Much like English language, one Chinese word can be used in different ways.
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.

That is the problem. I played Neverwinter. I paid the "dark elf" tax. I know that when I go buy things at Neverwitner, open my account. Neverwinter have an account, that need a cc data stored.
GW2 not. There are no accounts, active or inactive. If I buy gems in GW2, I don't have an account for it. Everytime I buy gems from Anet I need send the cc info. So, your text show both translations are possible, "account" and "user". But if GW2 have no accounts, so how can you apply the first possible translation?
IMHO, the diference is because Neverwinter is a F2P and GW2 is a B2P. GW2 will not create a link to an "account", when you buy the game you have a link for activate the box or game download and it is an ONE TIME event for create an user name and password for login into the game. From that point, GW2 know only if you log or not into the game. If you never buy gems and bought the game from a store, they never will know your cc data and the only info they will have about you is the user name and password.
I am trying say you is that while Neverwinter will know how many active accounts they have, GW2 will know only how many active users they have (how many people login into the game).
I can see you play Neverwinter because who play or played Neverwinter know it have an account, but if you think that GW2 have accounts you show you never played GW2.

Maybe I did not phrase it good enough. Let me try again
A GW2 account is considered that, once a user has purchased, installed GW2, created a username to uniquely identify the user, and has activated the game to play, it will be counted as one active account. Whether the user will continue to play, purchase gems, or whatsoever, will be a seperate issue.
As long as the user was not banned, requested a refund thus a termination of the account etc, that username account is considered active. This is the meaning of "account" here.
Hope I made it more clearer.

You sure you have the right game? When I buy gems I use my saved credit card information, which is saved in my GW2 account information.
You're also missing the "per week" part where it applies to the active users.

Do you have anything to back that up, or like everyone else in this thread are you just making up your own definition?
It's numbers published by a developer or publisher to push the game. The 'definition' means whatever the developer or publisher wanted it to mean. Plus there are the ambiguities in the translation. Basically, we don't really know what they are saying. Nobody does except them. Just because they are Chinese doesn't mean they are going to be any more clear about what they're saying compared to companies in the West.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Not reality at all. There are plenty of new players in the game and people are not thinking about that. You don't need a box, just an electronic download. I will give you an example - I bought the deluxe electronic version, which is not counted in box sales. Only boxes are counted. How many electronic sales were there? We don't know but I would think it is higher than the 3 million box sales.
Just something to think about.
Haters will hate and will deny because if you continue to tell a lie, it eventually does become reality (or what they hope will happen).
The 3 million sold reportedly included digital sales.

I am just explaining the meaning I know in simple English, what else do I need to back up? If they want to mean 2.5 millions accounts/users is actually 2.5 million mudcrabs that had overran ANet headquarter, so be it. All I had read in Chinese language is 2.5 millions active accounts/users, then I just described it as it is.
Or, in English, if they say "We have 100 millions customers!", and as you claimed, they can define "customers" as mubcrabs in their company vocabulary when in reality the company has 100 million mudcrabs overunning the company headquarters. As a normal reader, all I read is the word - "customers".
Remember, you had asked what is the difference between them, and I just give you an answer. It may or may not apply to GW2, since the Chinese may use "users" to represent "mudcrabs", and maybe "motormouth pads" as "users". You even said there are ambiguities in the translation, and I gave the possible translation (user and account). At least I did not claim "user" = "transparent bikinis".

K guys, i am a chinese so i can read chinese, the translation "2.5 million active users" is so wrong i have to say,
The chinese on the website actually means "2.5 millions logins each week", so you guys can stop argueing.
2.5 million "??" means 2.5 millions logins, ask anyone who understand chinese and they will tell you the same answer.
Edit: guess i cant type chinese in this website, it turns to ??
If this is true this entire thread is pointless.
We have no idea how many people are playing so no calculations mean anything anymore.
I am sure it is not "logins". the second chinese word - hu, applies to something tangible, like household (jia1 hu4), customer (ke4 hu4), or in this case, user and possibly account (yong4 hu4). Login most likely will have the word qian1 (sign) , as in sign in (qian1 jing4)

What's funny is that Colin stated they're close to releasing another sales milestone, yet he wouldn't give a hint as to the number. I'd guess 4 million, but the number they have targeted could be 3.5 million, 5 million, we don't know. Pretty much all we know for sure is that the game is still growing, which is impressive enough in and of itself.

I'm assuming your translation is spot on. They said "accounts", not "users". But this isn't a disclosure of data, this is advertising. You gave a very definitive interpretation to something that amounts to advertising.
The marketing drones that this went through could have chosen to use "Accounts" instead of "Users" or "Players" because it scores better in market tests. It doesn't matter that it doesn't accurately describe what they're talking about because it's advertising. The guys releasing the advertising may not have any idea that some people think "Users" and "Accounts" are two different things, and they probably don't care.
For all we know, there are 1.5M people playing the game, 100 people on the forums and 1M accounts that haven't logged in for months. Or there are 2.5M people logging into the game and the website every week. Either interpretation is just as likely based on the material we have available.

My point is that the arguments in this thread about whether or not GW2 actually has however many players people want it to have it kind of stupid. We don't have any more information now than we had before.
The Chinese translation process is far more interesting than anything else in this thread.

Of course I know these numbers are just pure advertisement BS. Neverwinter is the newest BSer to claim 2 million players strong (lolololol)
Problem is, unless the next most official GW2 owner (ANet or whatever) gives a new claim, we have to take the official Chinese website's claim "for granted". And I had said, Chinese words, just like English, not just have several meaning for a chinese word, it can even have several variation for the same meaning.
Anyway, arguments or not, it is one sure way to drum up the interest of GW2, in this forum and elsewhere. That is one reason the chinese website comes up with those BS numbers rather than the official ANet/whatever.

hmm, can you type out the two small words in han yu pin yin? I may have missed it. I went to that chinese website,
and they have taken down the BS numbers and replace with number of Facebook and Youtube hit LMAO!!!!!
Anyway, are you "sure" the words before the numbers are "misleading"? The words came out from the head honcho's mouth, after all. The phrase could means "Number of active users/ accounts logins", so I am at least correct for the "number of active users/accounts" part, unless you can prove that the chinese website actually means "users" = "mudcrabs"

I dont use han hu pin yin, i live in Taiwan , but i cant try since i know how that read, "ren2 tsi4".
Yes i am 100% sure its misleading, i can translate the sentence, it means
"weekly active users: 2.5 million (times people do it)" so ya its obviously misleading, the words before the number are big while the words means logings here is small, you can see what they are trying to do.
its like saying US DOLLARS I OWN : ONE MILLION cent.
The big "DOLLARS" means nothing since the real unit for one million is cent.

Is it this? Found on baidu baike
I can see where you are going. Explaination for non Chinese readers: this means "number/total of human times (like visited, used, or in this case, login)". It is not a direct translation of "login", but the meaning should applies here.
A player can "use/visit/login" to GW2 client once, and it will count as one user for that week. If the same user login 1000 times to his/her only account during that week, it is considered 1000 users, even it is physically one user. AKA repeated attempts to login from the same player is counted as seperated unique users. I presume a normal player will log in an average 10 times over a course of 7 days.
WOW this thread is getting exciting again! Anyone wants to try to boast about the new Facebook and Youtube hits?
Edit: BTW I am aware those numbers are BS. Not just misleading, but pure advertisement and marketing BS. Neverwinter for example is the newest BSer.

I find it funny that those numbers have magically disappeared and now it has YouTube and Facebook numbers. It is also funny that there were people in this thread that found that number plausible. What a joke.

The website probably did not expect western users to read the numbers and ended up misinterpreting them. Otherwise ANet has sent a request to ask them to take down, since Anet did not even officially publish these numbers.

I let your first misinterpretation of "active accounts" slide, but now you're asking for it
"Active account" in MMOs has always meant a user currentlyactive in the game, usually tracked via logins. (time frame varies, usually month, in this case a week)
Definitely not the # of accounts created.
EDIT: I'm sorry, I missed that they took these numbers down, making any debating over them pointless.

Much like English language, one Chinese word can be used in different ways.

So you think they pulled the game off of the shelf after they sold 3 million? They have sold more since, so it's possible.

Just because they are Chinese doesn't mean they are going to be any more clear about what they're saying compared to companies in the West.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
The 3 million sold reportedly included digital sales.
So I guess. you're wrong.

If this is true this entire thread is pointless.
We have no idea how many people are playing so no calculations mean anything anymore.

Sorry. I lied. Active user is a type of fishball that is specially tender in the inner wall. Active account is a variation hue of the pink color family that is especially popular as paint color.
zzzzzz
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
And it is still 3 millions now. A fact.
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
heh... you got a giggle out of me on that one.
Oderint, dum metuant.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
It is great that a new 4 million sales milestone will be set. It is even better to know that the game is growing. It is the best that you got a giigle out of it.
And it is still 3 million box sales. the chinese website says so!
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
You dont understand at all , those chinese characters before the number means nothing (actually they are meant to be misleading) , the only words matter are the 2 small ones following the number... try figure out what the 2 words means first before you "sure" about anything.
hmm, can you type out the two small words in han yu pin yin? I may have missed it. I went to that chinese website,
and they have taken down the BS numbers and replace with number of Facebook and Youtube hit LMAO!!!!!
Anyway, are you "sure" the words before the numbers are "misleading"? The words came out from the head honcho's mouth, after all. The phrase could means "Number of active users/ accounts logins", so I am at least correct for the "number of active users/accounts" part, unless you can prove that the chinese website actually means "users" = "mudcrabs"
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
James T. Kirk: All she's got isn't good enough! What else ya got?
The website probably did not expect western users to read the numbers and ended up misinterpreting them. Otherwise ANet has sent a request to ask them to take down, since Anet did not even officially publish these numbers.
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
