If GW2 release an expansion that sells 1 million copies at $40 per copy, that is another $40M revenue (I know, not all the money goes to Anet/NCSoft, but mostly will be digital copies and then there is more expensive editions).
No, it's more like 22million. Using the 500k Sub number given in Jan. 2013 x 15$ you get 22.5 million.
Doesn't EvE have a cash shop as well? though Bully 100,000 of those "subs" are Chinese so its not 15x500,000.
that's why I took of 500k. NCsoft does not separate CS from Sales. it's all lumped in to sales. It's pretty close just about how ever you slice it.
Fair enough, I agree.

Originally posted by Volkon I also traded some gold for gems and bought two of the collectibles expanders which increased my stack size to 750 so far and will probably kick it to 1000 in the near future if it ever looks like I'll need it. Yep, I also traded in-game gold for gems to expand my collectible stack size. I can gladly skip the majority of things in their gem shop but this was something I found really handy. The amount of storage you can get in this game is pretty decent compared to most games I've played.
The real reason for all this exaggerated criticism:
GW2 is a very good and very successful MMO WITHOUT endgame-raid-gear-progression.
They broke the golden MMO-rule!
No imbalanced PvP-1337-noob-OWNAGE-roflolololllll111.
No dismissive treatment of players who do not have the "right gear" to show that they "have earned" the right to play this game properly.
And now the addicts will flame this game till the end of time
Lot of meaningless statements with little to no truth. Not even sure if you meant the "imbalanced PvP" part or it was supposed to be sarcastic. In fact, I personally would have loved if something like that worked. Unfortunately it didn't, it did the complete opposite.
I also like how you put the "raid" in there for end game gear progression. Because without "raid" it would be false.
At the moment GW2 is a successful product in financial terms.
From what I see in game, the population is healthy, but I have no official numbers and only vague "population has been increasing in the last 6 months" from interviews.
NCSoft also states that gem revenues are stable and that GW2 revenue decrease is due to lower box sales.
It is possible GW2 become a financial failure in the future.
Considering Arenanet keeps expanding and it has 350 people working, with only 50-100 of them working in GW2 vanilla, it seems clear that they (and NCSoft) believes GW2 will be profitable in the future and that investing to release in China is worthwhile.

Remember you are comparing a game that is 10 years old (Eve) to one that is just over a year old. You are comparing a game that is stable in terms of revenue year over year (Eve), compared to one that isn't. You are comparing employees over several games (CCP) to one with one game. You are comparing salaries mainly in the U.S. to ones in Iceland (Eve).
As I said, let us get back to this discussion end of this year even. Let us see how the data pans out. If the trend holds true, Eve will take over in quarterly revenue this year.

EVE also is a very specific niche game with pretty much no competition.
About salaries.
The operating costs seem to indicate salaries are around $7M per quarter or $28M a year, so average wages of $50K a year.
Anet is known for paying less than the industry average, I doubt that they are paying much more than that but it is possible they pay $100K.
With 92% gross margins the money is going somewhere.
GW2 is also a that started really huge, with 2 million players at lunch and 3 Million in the first few months.
GW2 is also a game that relies on cash shop transactions, that are much less reliable and GW2 so far is not selling power in the cash shop.
Remember the revenue you see there is EVE + DUST 514.
Remember that you live in a world where even MMORPGs with great IP recognition like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, are less than financial successes.
The new players of today don't seem to be picking MMORPGs, at least the traditional ones.

Yeh, once they do their China release they will get another big influx of revenue. How much, who knows? Definitely no one knows here, but it will be interesting to see.

I don't think Dust 514 makes any revenue. They are lucky to even hit 1 million. And I know how the B2P model works, to me it is not a sustainable long term model, unless you pump out frequent expansions. But I thought GW2 pushed B2P and is still pushing B2P and trashing P2P? Saw their latest emigration PR nonsense?
About Asia, it adds little to no revenue, especially China. GW2 is not doing well in China at all. There are only 70k registered users on their Chinese website, and even within those most have give up on the game. General sentiment has been that they hype has come and gone. Maybe they can pick up steam again, but doesn't look good right now.
Yeh, once they do their China release they will get another big influx of revenue. How much, who knows? Definitely no one knows here, but it will be interesting to see.
Across all NCSoft games last quarter, China had about 7% of total revenue even with popular titles released in China. GW2 thus far is not popular at all, in fact interest is pretty much dead. So I doubt it increases revenue much even if interest picks up.
Guild Wars 2 is a 10/10 game, and anyone who did not like the game either a) did not play it or b) never played WoW or any other MMORPG before and doesn't know what to do.
The best post above is the one that states the fact they like knowing they can come back to GW2 any time, but has no idea why they do not want to come back. That is how I feel as well. There is no challenge, and the end-game has no point besides fun. And as good as fun is, there still needs to be some kind of threat at the end.
WoW is still successful despite all its failings because it has conflict. That is what is missing from GW2. To date, my wife still has a Horde sticker on her car. She will still say "For the Horde!" as a cheer, and she still hates the Alliance. But she hasn't played WoW for a long time, and I have not played for even longer. Even myself, if I meet someone who played Alliance, they definitely drop a notch in my book.
GW2 needs to add conflict between players. Something for people to rally behind. Just as Democrats and Republicans bring massive amounts of attention and funding by bashing the other side, GW2 needs two enemy factions to go head to head. I strongly suggest that GW2 goes wild and adds an entire new faction complete with new races and their own continent and pits them against the all-loving-happy-guys which make up the current unconflicted population. A Horde to fight the Alliance, so to speak. In doing so, players will re-roll new characters, they will come back to the game, they will want to fight their enemies. They will complain that they are always outnumbered and that it is always unfair, and they will fall asleep every night loving it.
Bring some World PvP into GW2. Bring some Faction vs. Faction (vs. Faction!?!?!) warfare into the minds of your players. Right now, the server vs. server is kind of impersonal and does not leave me with any satisfaction in winning or losing. Having an enemy try and kill me while I'm in the world who is also on my server... now that's fun, and worth my time.
I think the PvE is amazing. I think the WvW is great (but maybe a bit too predictable). I think the Arena matches are extremely balanced and require strategy rather than just burst (WoW). But in the open world - I for one who has explored maybe 10-20% of the map - is useless.
Imagine doing a quest where you have to escort an NPC across a zone while defending him from enemy players on an assassination quest to end the NPC's life. How cool would that be? Right now, we get to sit in WvW and escort a yak while no one cares.
I love GW2 and would be so happy to have them add some conflict to get me back in the game. Right now, GW2 is a 10/10 in my book with no reason to log back into the game.
I played GW2 and didn't like it. I have been playing WoW on and off since 2005. I didn't like the combat... Exclusively. I hated it. Have been playing Mmo's since Shadowbane and eq. I'm sposta like GW2 why? Cause you did?

Most threads there don't even have 500 unique vistors anymore. So don't count your eggs before they hatch.
But you believe that somehow CCP has a bunch of guys working in DUSt 514, a game that generates hardly any revenue?
It has close to none working in Dust 514.
GW2 has not been released in China, but probably China won't generate much revenue just like the Asia revenue for EVE is crummy and WoW China revenue is also crap - most money will stay in the Chinese partners.
On the other hand the chinese players can be used to boost the number of players of these games.

Some of them already said that China Wow is in decline because it was too much easy and less grindy, so Blizzard gave them 2 raid lockouts, harder raid bosses and higher item level gear. I don't think they will be happy to grind random skins from random boss drops without real challenge and character/gear progression. Different mentality.

I agree. I don't know of anything they could do to make me wanna play it. I don't like B2P/F2P games, but bought it for everyone in my family to have something to play at the time. I played it for a few weeks and dropped it. It's just way too casual friendly and the part I was interested in, WvsWvsW is a complete joke.
So ... according to their own developpers they are almost "out" ?
This sounds terrible for the fans in the long run.
You know, this is at least the second time I've read a response like this, and all it indicates to me is... well... something I already knew, having been around here for a while:
People do not read. Or, they kinda read something, don't finish it, don't comprehend it, they fill in the blanks in their head... and then run with it, spewing nonsense all over forums that has nothing to do with anything that was actually said.

This is one of the biggest problems with the MMO genre, especially among its players. People do not read. Or, they do, and if what they've read isn't "controversial" enough for them, or isn't in line with what they want to believe, they just start making shit up, or twisting the words around, and passing it off as fact.
As bad as MMOs and/or their developers can be at times, they are utterly eclipsed by the ignorance and dishonesty of many in their communities.
'living story' should of been a side feature in the game-yet they spent the whole year focused on this one feature.
in lamest terms- that is as if wow focused all year on their holiday events..

... but you're wrong. They didn't spend the whole year focused on that one feature. Some small teams spent the whole year focused on that feature, while the majority of them are mysteriously working on other GW2 things. :c Mysterious.
