The Elder Scrolls Online is set to be one of the “big” games of 2014, something both marvelous and frightening at the same time. ESO comes with both the boon and the burden of Skyrim behind it. Luckily, the development team seems to be taking that challenge to heart. What about those of us who dearly love both RPGs and MMOs who have never plunged headlong into Skyrim and don’t know much about the whole universe? What will compel us to want to play Elder Scrolls Online?

I loved Skyrim, never played their past games.
I will say that the experience form playing ESO so far for me has been as exciting as playing Skyrim.

Played a few beta weekends, enjoyed the hell out of them.
As far as the question posed in the opening paragraph, I ask this:
What would make a non-Warcraft fan play World of Warcraft?
DAOC Live (inactive): R11 Cleric R11 Druid R11 Minstrel R9 Eldritch R6 Sorc R6 Scout R6 Healer
We'll see what happens. I'm glad they have a semi-in-depth crafting system and great lore however, as it stands now, I'm not sure I'd buy it at the get-go without some kind of trial.
I played a couple of beta weekends myself.
I'm just here waiting for the comments about Zenimax finally buying "ads" on this site now. Since every time this site starts writing articles about an upcoming MMO someone always says it.
I only took a cursory look at Skyrim, and past ES titles and frankly did not like them one bit. I played a ESO BETA weekend and did no think much of the game. I played this last BETA weekend and decided I would buy the game at release. It had improved that much.
It is just a well made, solid, FUN game. In my opinion. And while I generally don't care for SB ford's writing(s), (this one included) I felt it wasn't a bad idea to post what I could, being a former 'hater' of the title. If you like MMO's you will enjoy this game, no need to be a long running fan of the IP. Again, just my opinion.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.
I don't see many non-Elder Scrolls players playing this game. But then again I don't see many fans of the single player RPG's playing for very long either.
I honestly think the only people who end up playing are DAoC fans, what few remain, and megalithic fan boys with an agenda.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
This after the fix.
The word "Non-" should be removed from the title because that is one of the biggest questions being asked on every TES related site. The quality of the story is low with a heavily restricted themepark design leading to a PvP focused area that appeals to few of the many fans of the IP.
No amount of articles pushing the game is going to change that and doing it on this site that is swarming with former DaoC fans is just preaching to the choir.

You know what? I never really got into the single player RPG myself. [mod edit]
The combat revolving around the mouse is AWESOME.
Funny, I think ESO fans and non ESO fans will play it. In fact I think many like you who claim to hate it will too. What insulting baiting title similar to megalithic fan boy should we call that?

The game, although certainly not revolutionary by any means, is very solid in its concept.
A combat style that is both basic and complex. Graphics that are top notch. Crafting and storylines that will involve players long after their first month subscription is up. RvR that will captivate PvP gamers and which also has a lasting effect on their factions. The ability to join multiple guilds to compound the social interaction.
Honestly, I've never played Skyrim, but I'm burned out enough on what's out now that I'd be willing to try just about anything. The fact that ESO is starting to show real promise is just a bonus.
well, lets start with this: i pay 50$ for it and have maybe 100-150 hrs of playtime fun. but tbh i bought single player games for the same amount of money and only had around 50 hrs until i was done with the story. i don't have any problem paying my share for a ~100 hrs game.
but TESO is a mmo(rp)g and we can ... no we should ... expect more, especially with a budget around 250 million $. honestly, i don't know where zenimax spend this money. lets compare the feature list of TESO with wildstar (150 m $ budget) or archeage (100 m $ budget) and again, where did the money went? more bitter taste is left behind if you compare it with the feature list of independent mmogs like shroud of the avatar, star citizens or repopulation. and again, what did they do with the money?
the question shouldn't be: "why would a non-elder scrolls fan play eso?" it should be: "why should we pay for it?"
That'd be my question too. There will be folks who like it just fine, happy to be running around in any ES type enviornment. At least for awhile. But I just don't like the Devs distrust of the players.
They don't trust us to choose alliances, tieing alliance to race. Simplest fix would be to allow any race to be a member of any alliance. But apparantly, that's too hard. I guess they don't trust people in the PvP zones to be able to tell the factions apart either.
Still think it'll do gangbusters at release. I wonder about down-the-road though.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
For me it is simple: Single player games bore me to death.
I play games that allow me to play along side friends. Even if Skyrim allowed a few friends to pop into the world and adventure together I would have bought it. Bethesda didn't get my money because you can't do that. That is the ONLY reason.
TESO doesn't even need to be a true mmo (Even the pvp angle of it can be a separate entity to the pve side of the game and the only real component online). I just want to adventure along side some friends. If more companies clued onto this they would sell a ton more games. This is why I firmly believe the smaller group and more localized game Shroud of the Avatar will do better than most mmo lovers predict here.
You stay sassy!
