Why would *I* a non-elder scrolls player play ESO?
Because I'm an mmo player (eq, eq2, lineage2, daoc, warhammer, vanguard, lotro, wow, gw and some others whose names escape me). I went into the stress test with no preconceived notions based on a single player game. My son (who loves the elder scrolls games) also played in the stress test.
We agree, it is a game we will def be buying. It isn't as polished as some I've played but it was engaging, fun and the game play felt a little old school without being painful. (LOVE IT) They have things they need to work on but nothing game breaking and I'm excited to play.

Lore is the only answer, but as anyone familiar with ES mods can tell you, the fanbase can create it just as well as any company.
Create the lore as well as any company? No. Fan fiction =/= Elder Scrolls lore.

As a NON-ES Player I perhaps can answer the question. So first - why did I sign up for Beta? I signed up, since I love MMOs. SP games bore me to death. So after the betaweekend- without breaking the NDA- I´d say a NON-ES player HAS to buy ESO when interested in PvP. I had really NO expections, since many Mags did not mince matters about ESOs weak points. PvE was a bit clunky and at the beginnig I had to fight with the controls, yes. But I liked the crafting, the combat system and it looks pretty nice. The vast variety of possible skill options and also some really small, but really good ideas were also really great to see.
See I played the Stresstest about 24 hrs. It was nice, pretty and all...but the one big thing that finally catched me, was 1 -2 hr in the AvA. It felt epic and it ran fluent. Can´t wait for ESO to be released now.
Have MMO background. Played last beta. Simply put - its much much more than i expected. Mouse controls and resource system are working beyond my expectations. In 38 hours i was online just 4 times i was kicked out of the game. On below average comp i was running dungeons above 40 fps. 9/10
Have played the series since the Arena days, was a bit disappointed that they are going the route of mmo but at the same time a little excited, if they get it right it'll be a great game, however with so many failed games recently and this new age free to play BS that a lot of developers end up turning to many of us seasoned players are a bit worried.
Gaming seems to have gone from lets make something amazing to lets make something that'll pay the bills and with so many cry babies and trolls online these days a lot of the comaradery that gamers once had has long gone and the gaming world is the worse for it.
ESO has to get it right from the word go and ignoring mature gamers for those younger players with disposable incomes won't do them any favours (WoW and Star Wars) when I say mature players I don't refer to age btw.
The thing that worries me most is will this be the end of solo play rpg titles from Tamriel, will the new MMO cater for those who want to pop online do a couple of quests and then shoot off back to work? Some MMOs not only take ages to get online but also you end up queing for ages trying to get that item you need to finish the quest, lag, server downtime are also big issues that need to be addressed, but if they find the balance between all of the aspects and get it right they will be on to a winner.

I really really doubt they will stop making single player TES games. The reason they make TES games single player in the first place is because they feel it is important to make the most immersive and fun RPG experience possible. Multiplayer modes shift the focus away from those goals. While ESO may succeed in making a great MMORPG they will not be able to truly capture the experience a TES game provides. There will always be a market for people who want to play a great TES game without anal jokes in chat, without node/mob stealing, and without the various other forms of ass hattery you come across in online games.
when people found a quick way to level up, why bother doing it normally?
this is my concern of TESO
even though they say that the leveling is not linear and we can explore, it's still an mmorpg, not a single player game, mmorpg is all about competition
do you mind getting left behind of other players because of doing some exploring?
maybe not, if you're a casual
If people wanna level fast and have competition, they'll zerg to level 10 and then they'll live always in Cyrodiil doing RvR, having all the competition and PvP they like.
If people wanna play to be part of a wonderful world, discovering secrets and exploring, they'll level in PvE zones until 50, then they'll go in other alliances zones to explore them too
In all of this there are instanced PvE dungeons and a LFG tool for players who search a WoW-like endgame.
Everyone is free to play what he like !
competition is not all about PvP
the first to reach 50
the first to beat X dungeon
the first to get an epic loot
the race for the throne (emperor)
etc
and who are you competing with?? I mostly solo in MMO, group up when needed..im not racing anyone, i couldnt care less who makes it to 50 first, when i get epic loot is when i get it, dont care who gets it first...and good luck in that race for the throne...its going to be the hardest thing to accomplish in this game and not many will . MMO's to me is all about role playing in a fantasy world...its isnt a competitive sport. hopefully this game is going to be around for years...why would you be in such a rush to be the first at anything in this game..you wont get any awards for it.
first off, people need to realize that Zenimax is making this game, not Bethesda...it takes place 1000 years before Skyrim, ESO will have zero effect on any future single player games Bethesda decides to make. Second, no one should compare this game to the single player games, be it graphically, game play wise, or what ever. Its an MMO..NOT a single player game. During My recent 2 beta runs i did (November and this month) they made HUGE strides in this game. In november, i was a bit meh about this game, wasnt very impressed at all, but this past beta..it was like night and day. the character models, the world, the crafting, the quests, the customization, ALL top notch. Just one thing i didnt care for but cant get into detail due to the NDA. I think MMO fans will love this game...being an ES fan or not. this game is going to be very good. Well worth the $15 sub fee imo
