So ZOS stated a MONTH+ ago that the addon API was going to be severely restricted come launch and it's somehow a "knee-jerk reaction" on their part?
Hell, they even stated that as time passes they are going to tweak the API based on player feedback, statistics, etc....but it's a "knee-jerk reaction".
What am I missing here?
They released a game that PURPOSELY omits very basic information available in literally every single MMO ever made (well there might be some exception, but i don't know of one). They did this with the intention that this information will be accessible via API. Now they're not even allowing that.
IS that a linkable statement or player conjecture?

you're missing they they should really push this game back a few months to be more inline with the console launch... as they clearly arent ready and need a lot more time.
WHile I agree, I don't think addon's should have any effect on release dates.

I've played 50+ MMOs. I honestly can't recall a single one in which i was not able to find out exactly what killed me. It's beyond retarded.
I don't need custom-made maps or some botting programs to tell me how to move. But basic information about what just happened in combat? That's one of the most basic things that enables you to fix/evolve/improve your character.
I'm glad I've never suffered as a min/maxer. It must be infuriating to work so hard at playing a video game. Don't get me wrong, I like addons to an extent, but some people use them as a crutch. I can almost always tell you what killed me. Try watching the action instead of the action bars and you'd be surprised at how much info you are given.
With that said, the devs stated a while back that they are adding 'death' info in via the chat window. So there you go, you'll know that Azzras killed you with an arrow to the knee.
There is no need for all this UI rubbish changes just learn to adapt with what the game gives you.
Firstly No, i find the standard UI visually displeasing for several reasons listed in orange.
Edit 2 - you know what i actually think this is what pisses me off the most.. the presumption all of you anti-addon people take towards the people who are pro choices. "you need a clutch" "you must be bad at the game" "if you were a real player you wouldnt need it", ever stop and think some of us just dont like the standard interface. i do not, not at all, i dont want a minimap it never interested me, but i'd be happy to turn off that god awful compass thing they have going too.. i dont like how my 3 resource bars are spread out across my screen, i dont like where the standard frames puts my target... there is many things i just dont like about it and i shouldnt have to play like that just because you guys think i should. just like you shouldnt have to play with addons if you dont want too. From the get go, i've been saying i just want to use certain addons for QOL, like lootdrop, item rarity border, FTC for the style of player / target information i like, scrolling combat text because i like the information, combat parser to track my own abilities... i could care less about seeing yours, i'm not going to play with any of you anyway so it doesnt bother me.. the fact that ZOS made this an online single player RPG took care of the need i would have to ever group with any of you.
i could care less about how much magika and stamina you have, i never saw it as a benefit in any way shape or form, but you can be damn sure that when there is 300+ people in a large scale PvP battle, that particle effects on everyones clients are going into autoscaleback mode to stop the servers from lagging out and you wont be able to see all if many of your precious visual queues for spells imparticular, it's going to be a different story.. again i could care less.
what i do care about is that you automatically assume that i need some kind of crutch or have been trained to play a game in a certain way which is just mind boggling, like literally my mind is blown right now that you all feel that strongly about addons and that they automate gameplay, the lead to bots, they one shot your oponent in PvP because you can see his magika.... guess what, the game is built around LUA thus a bot can be made even without an API at all... the bot hooks into the memory and injects LUA script.. it doesnt need addon support for that. No addons have automated gameplay, no addons i used have a 1 shot kill button in PvP and none of them were as game breaking as you all QQed about.
After all of this, all I can think to say is.... learn to adapt. That's what life's all about, learning to adapt and overcome. Gaming is no different.

I really wonder why having a choice is considered bad. Noone can force addons on you but yourself.
I do agree one one thing tho: Having to use addons to get access to VITAL AND BASIC information that the stock UI does not tell you,... is bad. Buff yourself up every once in a while, you never know when it drops. *facepalm*
It is because some people are unhappy and they do not rest until everyone else is as unhappy as they are. They can not stand ANYONE does things different.
First to the poster above you I'm sorry but that's part of learning a game, without a cheat sheet. IN time you will know when to pop a buff, if you take the time to learn when to. Which is only a simple matter of being aware of those things while you play. All that statement shows is that you've become far too used to apps doing the mental game for you.
IN reference to El's statement pots and kettles and all that.
Uhm, apart from the early MUD's i have played every MMO of any meaning, even some that noone ever heard of. Not a single one tried to hide my own buffs from me. Not even the very first 3d MMOs that poped up.
Care to explain how hiding my buffs enhances my experience and why it would be fun to "learn" how to count to whatever seconds untill i hit the rebuff button?

50+ mmos you say? I dont think ZoS can keep you subbing no matter what they do, so why should they please your kind?
They altered the api to remove access to some information. Before this you could see your opponents magicka/stamina and what skills/buffs they were using in real time. They removed access to this information.
these are good news i guess, although i would like the devs to offer a tool to customize your UI based your wills but ok, at least this news shows that they care and respond in order to avoid "hacks"

Yea...They are purposely doing it to weed out the l33twowfanbois. I don't know a single person who even considered or mentioned cancelling because they nerfed the add-ons; there are about 6-7 pre orders among these ppl. It is a complete non issue.

It was a design decision to go with visual cues instead of icons with timers as other games (WOW, etc.) do it.
As far as I can remember, there is no self-buff or negative HOT that doesn't have an accompanying graphic "aura" of some sort except for the ones based on potions or food/drink.
But hey, the tweaking isn't over and never will be.

While I agree that the generalization is a bit ridiculous, at least he didn't try to back it up with any kind of "facts".
I have seen a lot of people say they are canceling their preorders for all sorts of reason and maybe some of them actually will. I will not be purchasing ESO, but I believe it will have pretty solid initial sales. Elder Scrolls is popular enough of an IP to have a strong effect on initial sales. I don't think the retention will be that great, especially on consoles, but it may surprise me.

Because the sophisticated and extensive add-on's were changing the game play away from what the ZOS devs were trying to accomplish. That's why those "pro add-on" people are being asked to adapt and adjust.
Any player that's "anti add-on" and starts a major protest in Wildstar or WoW will be told the same thing, because in those games the extensive add-on's are an integral part of the game play. Those games are designed to be played that way.

WoW didn't start off that way. Blizzard allowed the addons, and then had to change the game play to accommodate the fact that the addons existed. Dungeons and Raids especially have been tuned with the idea that addons like DBM will be present for many, if not most players.
Zenimax would like to avoid the situation where the game play of their game gets determined by a small group of players who want an advantage that doesn't come from just learning the game itself.
That said, I'm not a fan of players being required to guess at hidden things. For instance, if a boss fight requires that a player keep a particular buff up at all times, then hiding the buffs on a player is a bad mechanic. If beating another player requires keeping a debuff on that player, then hiding the visible debuffs on other players is a bad mechanic. On the other hand, if the buffs/debuffs aren't necessary to success, and are just a bonus in the encounters, then hiding them isn't a very big deal.
I agree with the sentiment of not setting things up so that addons are required in the game, not even player required addons. So long as they are responsive to what players want from their interface, and let players visually rearrange their interface, then it should all be good.
I hope what they do is supply in world indicators of poisons, diseases, etc. For instance, a green aura around your character when they are poisoned. Maybe some glowing wings when they are buffed, etc. Whatever. In world indicators would be better than interface indicators.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I think they are all meant to have them although I think some might be bugged and some are missing at the moment. For example, the Light Armor active skill, Annulment and its morphs put a semi-transparent white cage around you, the DK skill Draconic Armor puts spines on your back, etc.
Even some procs have a visual effect like with the Sorcerer's Crystal Fragment, the morph of Crystal Shard that gives it a % chance to become instant cast and cost half magicka after you use any other magic ability, which puts a purple glow around your hands when it procs.
I also would like to see them all be visual, in-world indicators.
Do that for all buffs/debuffs and add a combat log and I'd be 100% happy.

So would I.
Moving toward a more "natural" visual playstyle is something I've always hoped for in MMO's. It's a step closer to virtual worlds and step further away from Super Mario Online. It facilitates the illusion that you're fighting other people, not just bags of hitpoints and stats represented by icons and status bars.
As someone who tested addons in the PTS, I would like to know what addon that people on here are talking about that apparently gives auto-blocking, aim bot, auto debuff and auto buff bot capabilities.

What are your other Hobbies?
Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...

If you ask those anti addon guys every single addon automatically makes you win every pvp and pve fight there is.
MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.
Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?
