Screw this leveling ($*#, I just want to play endgame is the gamers mentality now and not the journey anymore.
next will b "pay us $60 and u can have a max lvl toon now". wait..........
Both wildstar and WoW start at max level. Getting there is not an achievement, its just absurdly boring.
wich is so so wrong.
why the fuck would someone include levels if endgame is where the "real" game starts? its not just boring but an idiotic thing to do.
leveling was the RPG origin in mmo's and also to give meaning to the game venturing on a epic journey. I hate the direction mmo's took.
I wasn't defending whether or not it's a good decision to start the real game at end game, I was just stating that both of those games apply.

There is no such thing as "Content Locusts" It's not the player's who are at fault for this. It's the games and their developers. Anyone remember who Jona was? The self proclaimed Vanilla WoW "pro" power leveler? I don't care about his credentials as long as he was really counted among the top power levelers of that time.Because it took him approx. 125 hrs game time to do it. That time frame was stupidly unheard of back then. And that was after having done it a dzn times before to perfect it.
No, the games are different now.
You put all the blame on the devs? I will put some of the blame on the devs, but I am sure the devs are not spending all kind of time designing quests, voiceovers, dialogue etc to have someone get to max level in a few hours played. I put more blame on gamers. What would happen if everyone got to max level in a few hours? It would cause severe panic with Carbine.
Let's use ESO as an example. The devs really tried pushing questing as the way to level, in fact the Veteran Ranks were changed that way after people blew by them via dungeon grinding or other ways. Craglorn changed this however due to the vast ammount of complaining.
There are certainly content locusts and they are the reason many themeparks fail, they cannot keep people around long enough.
That's exactly where the problem is. This new overhead including all that VO quest delivery comes at the expense of other content. Sorry, But I still disagree. Players played WoW and EQ1 and SWG, and UO and DAOC and AC and all the other older MMOs, then just as hard. In fact, players played them harder and with longer sessions. What's the difference? It certainly wasn't they way gamers played. It's the games.

The devs are the ones that can artificially control how quickly players gain levels. How can anyone blame the players for doing something efficiently?
No, the problem lies with the fact that the longer it takes to level, the more content and quests need to be created. That wasn't an issue a decade ago when all we had were mob respawns to deal with.
I think it's a joke that max level can be reached in an MMO in under a week, but it is what it is. No point in getting angry at the player for playing the way they want and within the rules.
Max level in under a week? How about max level in less than 1 day? I am not angry, just giving my opinion on what I think is the biggest problem that themepark devs have to deal with.
First, the guy(s) ( as I see, there are 2? ) who manage to get to 50 , I am pretty sure that they knew how and where to level up based on their BETA play time. Also, I am also pretty sure that they received a lot of help from their guild.
You must keep in mind that for some, achieving max level in a MMO is something to be proud of , but the majority, 99% are going to level as it should be.
After 9 hours of play-time , I am around level 15 . Did I do something "wrong"? I don't care, because I am having fun playing the game and understating it.
PS: In before , why don't you play the game beside writing on forums. Well .. queues baby 12 mins to go ..
proud?
leveling at a normal speed you would be max level in 2 weeks. proud? i dont see a reason to be proud for that.
When u hit max level in a game where i takes an average person at leats 6 months. oh hey thats something to be proud of. All this achievement and epeen bullshit nowadays while they infact arnt achievments at all.
Hello?
Ever heard of "Race to be the 1st?" So if, for a person being the first to hit the cap in a MMO is a great achievement , why should you care?
Also, the drama in this thread is very pathetic. Most who comment that "Level 50 in 1 days? this is bad!" , are simple the same people who bashed Wildstar since they heard about the game.
I don't know how that guy managed to make level 50 in 24h or 36h ( don't know exactly when this was posted ) , but after around 15-17 hours, I am level ... 18, without doing any crafts. A bit of PvP , rest quests and few-several adventures.
So making this big shit because 2 players achieved level 50 that fast( knowing the best way to earn XP from BETA and also help from guild ), it only shows that you want Wildstar to fail, no matter what. Well , breaking news .. it wont.
Also, the joy I am having, because I enjoy Wildstar, while most of you are here just to troll/bash , because you don't have any MMO to play, is priceless ..
Now, cry me some more rivers please .. a lot more!

We will just agree to disagree. Unfortunately with the vast number of MMO's out there the days of players playing a themepark game years on end and calling it home are probably over. Having people chomp through content like pac-man getting to endgame faster than the devs can create it, moving on on to the next cool game, trashing the game they just left crying lack of content and boredom is becoming the norm.
The older vet players who have been through it all unfortunately are losing out to the younger mainstream MMO developers who are looking for a quick buck. One can make an argument that the older vet crowd do not have time to play EQ1 clones anymore due to family and work priorites, but it would be sure nice to try something that resembles old school/hardcore just one more time.
Too many players treat MMOs as a 50 yard dash when they are designed and should be played as a marathon.

Not sure why you listed WoW in that list. It was pretty fucking easy to hit max level in WoW. The main problem was if you could stay connected to the server and get through the lag. That was mainly the only barrier there was to leveling in vanilla WoW.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but did DAOC even have levels? Skill levels yes, but character levels?

You're right but not in the way you think you are. It didn't take long at all to build a non jedi toon in SWG that would compete against jedi in PVP, I won many duels against higher ranking Jedi pre-cu. Fencer doc pistoleer templates were really good against them due to dizzy defenses ( 100 + = never dizzy) and KD defense (90+ = never kd'd) the main areas Jedi went for to get their kills (dizzy kd's).
As for there being no "content locusts" there are content locusts.. There are plenty who play just the available content outside of higher level raiding/PVP... and move on. These people (in the OP) are not content locusts (that's where you're right). They're people who want said achievement, or those whom are only interested in some form of end game activity. They don't care at all about the content on the way there, they skip it as much as possible.
Anyway about your games being different today thing I assume you mean that in reference to fast level capping , again true if you're saying the only games were EQ or something like L2.

Uh, they did this on a saturday afternoon/evening... barely a day's worth of time, how does that equate to having no life?
from lvl 1 to 50 in one afternoon/evening?
OK Carbine, time to add the 1 year of content you claim to have already.
They probably calculated the one year from having a couple of the development team play and were like yeah its going to take them a year to get max level. Development videos and dev displays at E3 and the such always make me laugh because they are just terrible players its shocking some times how bad they are.
They may be able to create games but they sure as shit cant play them.
From my personal experience it takes 18-26 gameplay time to reach lvl 50. Only from an engineer exile point of view. Grats to those who are 50 already. Normal people would probly take a month casually to get there.

Tell me something, would you find it equally shocking to know that the people who design and engineer airplanes...can't fly the very things they made to save their life?
Maybe those who feel this way should play games that don't require leveling and are all about instant action ? Leveling is character building, that's a staple of RPG's if you do not enjoy that, then RPG's aren't for you.
Characterbuilding is indeed a staple of RPGs. Leveling is neither the only nor the overall BEST way to do that though. It is just convenient for developers. In tabletop RPGs it made sense for a while, but when it was introduced 1 level meant a world and was a real achievement. In Computer MMOs they are just a lazy way to gate content in themeparks and also a lazy way to keep the gratification loop running.
Some alternatives:
Non grindable skill based systems which are almost purely time dependent like in EvE.
Grindable skill based systems where skills are improved by using them like in DFO.
Grindable skill based systems like in TSW where you build your character essentially paying with XP from kills and missions.
Ability based systems like in GW 1 (after the "leveling" to 20 which was mostly designed as tutorial, more so in the later parts).
The role of content gating is also quite redundant nowadays. It is not only that players explore the best ways to level in betas, but also that most players and guilds have huge experience with the common gamesystems. Beating the leveling curve has become a somewhat easy thing, as for some guilds beating the latest raid content is not very hard. The point here is the lacking innovation and surprise in game systems. Some games manage to suprise a little for a little while (like AION with inflight combat in the Abyss), but the leveling process is mainly untouched.
The inner coherence of that process is also questionable. For some reason the new player character gets completely retarded tasks which somehow make him "level" after a few minutes which somehow leads to him suddenly knowing new skills. Yeah. And then more completely retarded tasks which make no sense whatsoever and usually include killing very weak mobs who somehow made it into the starting zone and then more skills. There is no "character building" or "learning" or "training" included. Just mindless bashing of rats, beetles, hogs, walking trees or unlucky undead whith a new skill now and then which has neither any connection to the story nor is it in any way coherent. It is just tradition. And really not the best one.
Allright, so the next game with the next pro-rushers on their way to boredom. Nothing to see actually. They will be there in every game and they will burn through "content" in no time. That doesnt say anything about the longetivity of a game.
There is actually no solution to this behaviour. If you make the leveling extraordinary long many people will complain that they cant rush and are not max level in 2 weeks. Seen in ESO, seen in Aion...
The one thing which really concerns me, is that betas are used nowadays to free-test a game and take your time to search for exploits, which you can abuse after the game has started. That doesnt mean those 2 have exploited, but many pro-guilds do this on purpose. Get into beta, search for exploits and shortcuts, dont report them and abuse them to the maximum at start.
Tell me something, would you find it equally shocking to know that the people who design and engineer airplanes...can't fly the very things they made to save their life?
Just to correct you on this all aircraft manufacturers employ test pilots. Former pilots all who can not only fly very, very well but who also identify issue from a pilots perspective. They know the risks of flying aircraft that have not been cleared as flight worthy and - sadly - there are occasional deaths.
So what you really meant to say is: should Carbine have hired some gamers rather then just running a beta. (Blizzard did by the way ...... )

You're so ignorant its mind boggling. What do you think alpha and beta is for? If you're one of the people who think they're just a marketing gimmick(which some games use it as) then i'm done talking to you. Game developers don't need to "hire" anyone because there's people willing to PAY just to test their games. Also Carbine did have backdoor deals with certain high-level raid guilds to test their raid content for them.
So no, your attempt at "correcting" me did absolutely nothing. As what you corrected me is completely different from what i was saying. No shit they hire a pilot to test their plane, my point was a designer's job is to design, not to actually use the product, but to make it.

"a designer's job is to design, not to actually use the product, but to make it.". Jesus Christ, thats why every new product has so many shitty features that noone ever wanted/uses. Because instead of using the product and testing whats right about it the designers just threw some random features they thought would please the buyers. You will actually save money and time wasted on prototypes if the designer actually had a clue about how to use the product.
In a gear grinding, end game themepark mmo, this is gonna happen. When the game really begins at max level, what do you expect? I don't blame them for getting max level to get to where they want to be.
If I were playing Wildstar I'd do the same, rush to 50, because I absolutely hate quest grinding, fish tank battlegrounding to max level in an mmo. I usually play one character and hardly ever have an alt unless its for crafting or muling. Leveling is the most boring part for me. Grats to those that maxed out during headstart hehe.

What I am trying to say is this.
The same methods players use today to level cap in a day or two are the exact same methods that took players weeks to cap ten years ago. Players have not really changed the way they play. The "Content Locusts of today are doing the exact same thing the "Content Locusts" did 10 years ago. But back then, they weren't called "Content Locusts" That was a term given to these players when the games began to take less time to cap.

Hodor!
(Blizzard did by the way ...... )
Why add content? The people who hit 50 already sure as heck didn't play "the content".
They just found the best XP/hour in beta and ground that to 50. That has nothing to do with content.
If the game doesn't start until 50 then why bother with levels 1-49? Just start everyone at 50.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
true but the first wow 60 did happen in the first 12 days of WOW -- still super fast for mmos back in 2004

What happens when you log off your characters????.....
