If you care about the art then maybe this isnt the genre for you. RPGs have been lacking in graphics since playing DnD. We care more about playing with people, story, combat, etc, to even care about graphics.

I tend to find that after playing any game for a few hours, the graphics just become "the graphics" and it's only when I switch to another game I notice :)

Took me a while to get used to WS graphics, just like it took me a while to get used to the graphics in SWTOR...but I got there in the end which was worth it as the game is superb imo.

I think we have a winner here.

Though I prefer "realistic" art design, I don't understand how people can denigrate styleized graphics, insinuating they are "for kids" and still play video games pretending to be an Elf, an Orc, a Mage or "Space Man spiff".

I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that date:

    "Wait, you play video games?"

Same here. I see cartoony graphics as silly and game-like; and realistic graphics as virtual-world-like. When it comes to MMORPGs, I prefer the latter.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

Not sure where the for kids part came in -- certainly not from me.  You guys are twisting the topic a little though... let's compare apples to apples.  If a elf looks realistic and kick ass in a game, I don't have a problem with it.  If it looks like it stepped out of a Keebler Elf commercial, well, that's a different story.  See the difference between what I'm saying and what you've said?  There's a difference between realistic graphics and realistic game worlds...

Wildstar graphics are BARELY better than WOW, if at all.  WOW is an old game.  The graphics may be stylized, but they're also crap.

Though it's obviously fine that you don't like stylized graphics (I don't really like them either) the comparison to "cartoons" seems to imply they are for kids.

Also "this" is a cartoon as well. if the game had a style more similar to this it would still be "a cartoon" but more realistic.

I just think using the word cartoon adds a bit of baggage that others have used and that connotes it's for kids. Your post isn't the first post to have mentioned the stylized graphics being cartoons and in some of those posts the "for kids" has been used quite a bit.

that's why I made that joke.

It always bugs me a little when people call comic art cartooning as it's not, it's a completely different method entirely. Cartoons are all about exaggeration, comics are about action poses and are typically far less exaggerated as far as anatomy goes.

Wildstar is most certainly based on cartooning (it's highly exaggerated, too much so as far as human bodies go). Which shouldn't in anyway imply childish, was Heavy Metal for kids, how about Fritz the cat? I certainly wouldn't show them to my Niece.

For me I might be able to get past the Art Style, it's the combat I can't really stand, I can't quite place what it is, but it doesn't feel smooth or responsive to me. Comparing it to games with tight control (fable, Arkham games, etc..) it feels like there is something to be desired that's not there.

I simply have a higher threshold then you i guess. That being said i can´t get in to minecraft because i think it looks like a Rhinos backside. So each to our own i guess. =)

Now on the other hand we could have a long debate on what merits this style have. But i have learnt to never try and discuss taste.

well, your lack of knowlegde of art-direction is only topped by your ignorance about good or bad cartoons. so why would you come here and argue with people that aczually have a clue and know that wildstars artdirection is among the best in the industry? what would you gain?

Some use a cartoon style, Archie does for sure, as with some others, but general comic art styles and general cartoon styles are different in terms of approach. Cartooning is drawing in exaggerated form, Comic is again about drawing action poses/sequences. There is a way to differentiate.. Once is called Comic art, one is cartooning :P.

If cartoons are exaggerated and comics are action poses, please tell me where almost every single action Anime fits in?

Comic because of it's serious nature at times?  (Akira)

Or Cartoon because of the huge eyes, oversized mouths, x's for eyes or +'s for mouths (Akira, Wings of Hommeiase, Ghost in the Shell, any other Anime ever)

I don't believe you know what you are talking about

Art is so subjective its a topic thats had to define. IMO if the OP does not like it, thats fine. Im just glad the OP for a change had more substance that just throwing a WoW label on it. My self as a gamer, graphics is the last thing I judge a game on. I find good game and graphics often have little to do with each other and if I had walked away from games because of art style, I would have missed a lot of good games and some real fun times.

Well that's manga, which is it's own style of art. Best way to know the differences is learn them, pick up some how to books on the three styles and you will see how different they are.

Graphics or art style are far down on my list of things I worry about in games. Much more important to me is if the game is fun, has plenty of multiplayer content, easy to use UI, and enough customization to be somewhat unique. Wildstar excels in all of these areas in my opinion.

Also, I enjoy WS's lore and art style.

Same here. I see cartoony graphics as silly and game-like; and realistic graphics as virtual-world-like. When it comes to MMORPGs, I prefer the latter.

The major issue with realistic graphics is that they generally introduce game-breaking animation issues. Unfortunately human movements, emotion, etc. are really difficult to capture. Ask anyone at EA Sports *BURN* We're pretty good at animating cartoons, plus humans have pretty much come to grips that things that cartoons do tend not to be realistic, so we tend to accept the animation issues.

Then don't emulate humans and create unique races with different animations like TERA did. The races don't even run the same way lol. It's called creativity. You can have high quality graphics (and IMO the lack of details in Wildstar is awful), with good art style (TERA, Aion, FFXIV, etc.) and still have really great animations (which both of those games have). It doesn't have to look weird at all if it's designed well and done creatively. It's just in my opinion, something that Western game developers suck at royally (personally I think Western devs suck at a lot of things, but that's another topic). Play games made elsewhere and you'll be amazed at what's possible.

Are you sure about this? I just read a bit where the writer indicates that a Cartoon is "an animated visual format with sound and a comic is a written, printed format in black and white or color." Another bit indicated the same thing.

Are you making this differentiation because of what you have seen or is this some sort of "official definition".

There are art designs that I do and don't like.  But rest assured, if there was an art design that I disliked enough to quit playing, I probably would have never bought it in the first place.

I haven't played the game, personally.  But from what I've seen of this game's premise, personality, humor, etc... I can't imagine the art being anything other than cartoony.

With such a silly art style and humor it's amazing how The Incredibles, Shrek, World of Warcraft, or Borderlands appeals to people or even makes money.  Obviously those were flukes.  Besides, games and movies are serious business!

This is where I differ from you. I prefer and seek out games with cartoony graphics over realistic ones. I never really went in for the latter because there is always something offputting about them. I also prefer the vibrant colors of games like most of Blizzard's games and Wildstar. Also for some odd reason the cartoony game worlds tend to be more complete in artistic design and feel than the more realistic ones. Both WS and WoW have huge attention to detail in how they have been designed.

Even if a game is cartoony, it does not mean that it is necessarily silly. Take EQ2 for example. I would call that game slightly cartoony because it is more exaggerated and surreal than not. It is not a silly game though. Wildstar might come across as a silly game but there are some storylines that are really, truly not silly or even remotely funny at all. There is far more variety in the cartoon-like games than what you have in the more serious/realistic ones.

It is a game made for young adults so everyone who plays has no problem dealing with cartoons. Just look at the bad humor they put it.
