most mmo 's players dont care for graphic ,we care for content team work gameplay , players interactions
Best mmo's games on market are 10+ years old games .
An absolutely false statement. If it were even remotely true, we'd still be playing MUD's as they were and still are far superior in content compared to most of today's MMORPGs.
DnD RPG is more popular than it ever was. So it does seem like bland combat and 0 graphics can hold the test of time with player interaction, teamwork, and story.
There are games that are 100x more realistic than any RPG will ever be, if graphics meant something wouldnt we all be playing those instead?
Pen and Paper roleplaying is a completely different animal, you might as well be comparing computer MMOs to every board game and card game that ever existed. Different genre, different reasons to play, different business model and not even remotely direct competition to each other. MUDs, first generation and second generation MMOs are logical comparisons for the topic at hand.
When iused imagination in D&D i crtainly never imagined low res textures and bad graphics
And unfortunately those games with realistic graphics are 1000 times more popular than MMOs
So to sum up, id rather play d&d with no graphics than MMO with bad graphics. MMO is complete package, and that includes graphics AND art. When i play d&d i imagine my own graphics and art.
But who am i kidding, if someone compares d&d (or any such game) to MMO, i guessits pointless do discuss further with that person (to not get any deeper in a chasm that divides d&d and similar to MMO)
Yeah, minecraft wasmore popular than any MMO, even with its graphics. But it had more d&d in it than any MMO.
Explanation between graphics and detail ,aesthetics and style in Wildstar. He describes the detail on the robot watch it. The problem with so many of you that played this game you just looked at the art style and dismissed the game without actually looking at the world and the details that went into making this world. There is nothing that can be done if you have a prejudiced view. However do not come here and attempt to actually tell those of us who like the style that it is trolling or a joke.
well graphics are poor in Wildstar there is nothing which will pain your pc, that's ok for MMO
detail is also mediocre into poor, and they couldn't go further cause of their poor graphics
but aesthetics and style, that's another story, i appreciate their effort for a funny game ( i believe they succeeded on this ,) but their aesthetics are totally outdated and repeated from WoW ...
all these facts with its PvE/raid focus, are huge turn off, for mine taste of MMORPG.
By enjoying having to coordinate more heavily than most other MMOs
By not being a whiny brat who thinks that video games have to look like real life in order to be good
I could go on, but it's not any more of my time.
Edit: The graphics are great, it's the art style you don't like. There have been side by side comparisons between Wildstar and WoW, and if you saw those, you'd be back here apologizing.
First, the op was not a whiny brat. I for one totally agree with the op and I love the graphics in WOW. I agree with you that a good mmo is more then just it's graphics. Your statement comparing Wildstar and WOW graphics is wrong. What Wildstar is lacking is a sense the world is real, a 3 dimensional feel. This reality can be achieved with a cartoon style, WOW does this. Even though Wildstar's graphics are more advanced then WOW they are flat for me. What WOW has that few other mmos haves come close to is a sense of 3 dimension. The world feels like a 3 dimensional world not a flat cartoon world that has little true dimension. Wildstar feels like a video game to me not a living world. Despite all the stuff happening on your screen it just does not feel real, it feels flat. Carbine's attempt to offer you so much on the screen with wild colors, for me got distracting and removed me from the immersion of the world. I was continually reminded I was playing a video game. I never got any real feel of immersion in the world
Mmo's that I have played recently that give me that strong 3 dimensional feel, ESO, WOW, and GW2. These game all have a very different art style but they all feel 3 dimensional. The 3D feel is achieved by game performance, movement, object placement, an appropriate UI, color, environment design, the sum of these things bring the world alive. Wildstar while a fun game never raised to the level of a living world, it remained a cartoon, a good one but still a cartoon. So after a month playing I closed my account. I wish it well it is a good product worth the price of a ticket but for an mmo it fell flat for me.
MMORPGs in this time and age do not have cost effective technology to play in a real/holographic virtual reality environment. Remember wildstar had to pick its enginer circa 7 years ago when it started development.
This is how I get past playing in a cartoon environment, which I do not find all that cartoony, to me its on the same level as WoW at least.
I prefer a colourful cartoony open world to a more realistic one which lacks colour and has a loading screen every 5 m. There are things I don't enjoy about it like being a raid centric game, some quests too close in style to classic wow especially after lv 20 - killing 50 monsters for a quest/task is not my idea of fun but in the end I'll probably subscribe for another month or two to level my main and an alt or two to level 50, have some fun with housing system, level crafting and try some pvp. After that it will depend on how much the developers push for a raid centric game but anyway Wildstar was a nice surprise for me compared to other recent launched mmos.
I tried to get past it, but the visual aesthetic of the entire game, not just the characters or the art style, but the whole package itself causes me physical discomfort. It's just a visually unpleasant video game and playing it on a high end monitor with vibrant color representation and high contrast ratio for more than just a few minutes induces ocular fatigue. It might be a good game underneath all the clutter and cheap shiny paint, but I'll never know because I refused to continue playing after the first ten hours.
Originally posted by Deathstrike2 The graphics are such a turn off for me, I can't get past them. Call them stylized if you like, but to me they're cartoons. And not good ones at that. BLAH! I just can't do it anymore...
Your tastes are so mature and grown up, it's obvious to everyone.
I bought this game a week and a half ago and yeah the aesthetics of it never really clicked with me. I only got to level 21 before I went on a 3 day conference for work and not once did I think about the game or wish I was playing it. When I came back, instead of firing up Wildstar I bought TESO instead and am enjoying it much more. Not so many damn telegraphs all over the place and cartoony graphics. The ESO graphics also seemed improved from when I played beta late last year.
Don't get me wrong, the game is well made. It just doesn't suit me.
The graphics are such a turn off for me, I can't get past them. Call them stylized if you like, but to me they're cartoons. And not good ones at that. BLAH! I just can't do it anymore...
I really use to hate Wildstar-type graphics (really WOW-type graphics), but after playing years of WOW, the style grew on me and now I prefer it as long as the weapons and armor do not get too outrageously overdone.
I also find that realistic character graphics can be really bad if they don't get it right, and do not age well at all over the years.
Example: in 2004, EQ2 looked pretty good. WOW was acceptable.
In 2014, EQ2 looks bad (to me) and dated, while WOW is still acceptable.
Agreed with this, but I actually draw a line between WoW graphics and Wildstar. I know it's just stylisticly a personal opinion, but I was not a fan of Wildstar's visual look.
To put it in perspective: WoW's visual look is its own. It's unique, but not outlandish. It's environments are like those out of a Pixar movie - artistic, but it doesn't look put on. It's character models are believable enough to fly in the environment. Very well drawn, reasonably well animated (to be very well in WoD).
Enter Wildstar with its Dexter's Laboratory style character models and it's extremely vivid - borderline blinding - dream-like vistas. Every single color in the palette looks like it belongs in tropical Starburst candy package. It just isn't immersive at all. The best thing I can describe it to is someone who's just wearing way too much damn make-up. You just aren't impressed nor do you believe the illusion. You just snort, shake your head and move on.
The same way people have been getting past playing "cartoons" for decades. Last time I checked no one had an issue when it came to chrono trigger, or any of the mario games, or any of the zelda games, or any of the mega man games, or any of the pokemon games, or any of the street fighter games, or tons of indie games like minecraft. Why are people freaking out all of a sudden now just because it's an MMO? I don't even understand the implications of the way you worded the thread title. What does getting 'past' the cartoon graphics even mean...? It's a video game not a psychological battle

While I also did not like Wildstar's cartoony style, this guy has a point.

I think it goes back to what a lot of us expect out of an MMO: a virtual world to live in, and play a role in. I don't play cartoony MMO's because I don't want to "live" in a cartoon. Sure, I'll play games that look like cartoons, but for a virtual world, I don't want a cartoon.

I think it's more the particular style of Cartoon that Carbine chose.
Cartoons are fine, but Carbine's models look like rejects from Dexter's Lab and their excessive use of color makes everything seem like it was colored with neon pastels. It's just, IMHO, very unappealing and unimmersive.
The reason all those games you mentioned flew is because, back there, graphics were 8 bit. There's really not a lot you can do with 8 bit graphics and since no one had done better, we were fine with that.
Believe me, people have been doing better than Wildstar, stylistically, for 20 years. I actually like some of the SNES visual styles more.

Nah,the problem is the one from the C.S. Lewis quote which was posted earlier - some people think colourful and cartoony is not "cool" enough and that dark and twisted is more mature and realistic. Same people who would not read Lord of the rings because it had hobbits and now they are suddenly "fantasy" fans with Game of Thrones which is more or less a historical novel put in a fantasy setting. Interesting how a fairy tale world is not believable enough for some but a dark, miserable and violent one is - maybe Agent Smith was right after all, humans or at least some of them, define reality by misery and suffering.
Wildstar art style is purely personal preference, I have no idea why it sparked such a big discussion, arguing that art style is "bad" is arguing that football is "bad", it's not bad, it's just that you, specifically, don't like it, you are being subjective. Arguing that Wildstar graphics have low quality is another topic that you can very easily be objective about it, but the OP didn't really focus on that topic.
The graphics are such a turn off for me, I can't get past them. Call them stylized if you like, but to me they're cartoons. And not good ones at that. BLAH! I just can't do it anymore...
Seems like WoW has been doing fine with worse cartoon graphics for years.

Maybe you watched too many cartoons when you were little. Read a book or go outside, it helps to clear the head.
Originally posted by Dreamo84 Who says you have to get past it? It's not your thing, that's ok.
You don't have to like every MMO people! Or act like it's such a travesty that it doesn't appeal to your tastes!
Especially for a game like Wildstar. I'm pretty sure the very first gameplay video Carbine ever showed was of a cartoony catgirl bouncing through a green field. It's not like the style was a secret or ever changed since it was announced.
how do u get past watching Mona Lisa from Leonardo Da Vinci or the Weeping Woman from Picasso?
yes it does sound like a silly question, without any correct answer, just a personal judgment none really care about (unless you might be a famous art critic)
As a 3D artist, I believe there is no diferernce between cartoon and realistic 3D.
The modeling is basicaly the same: points, lines, squares, triangles
texturing is the same: zoom out and you can see something breathtaking, zoom in and its just colored pixels
animating: again more or less the same thing
AND U KNOW WHY?
because there is nothing like realistic 3D, it's all fake and every time you get fooled that mean the artist did his job well !!
But that doesn't mean you can't find nice realistic 3D, just don't expect to play any of it, unless you open your door and go play outside.
1.) Grow up - No reason to act like i am 12 about "Cartoony" stuff, and realize that, infact, some of the most mature stuff you see out there is actually done through cartoon works, going well above the childish 'mature' stuff which often bypasses intelligence using just sex and violence.
2.) Enjoyed
Really all. Took me only a second since I've matured years ago so I can stop the childish notation that 'cartoon artstyle' means childish. Really helps enlighten you and really can bring far more inlightment to much more intelligent content. Granted Wildstar isn't anything near that 'super intelligent' content of many shows, its still not done in a childish or 'mature' fashion... well actually it does show a lot of violence so I guess it does have some of that childish 'mature' content but its not a big deal.

You don't believe our world is dark, miserable and violent? Must be nice. It's also gritty and rough and things happen sporadically in ways that don't look pretty and choreographed.

And Age of Conan looks like actual realiy!
Thank you Wildstar
(jk, good game)
LOL same here.
OP I could not pass the childish cartoony look as well. I played beta but I got bored after few hours, not my style.
