It always amazes me the negativity that is elicited whenever anything or anyone alludes to anything regarding an alternate lifestyle (Ie., gay, bisexual, transexual, pansexual). They are just announcing the guy is gay. No need for the negativity. It's just an FYI.

Don't worry, those people are probably fighting their own insecurity, don't judge them.

Yea why would anyone roleplay in an RPG, seems like such a waste of time, just show me the targets to kill.
Funny how gamers managed to role play for decades without "romancing" a character in a video game. We must have been doing it wrong all these years. Man on man love will surely make the entire experience better. Or for that matter some cheesy cut scene for man or woman in a tent "romancing" could have been left out and the game would be just fine.
As Rzep put it, it's about immersing yourself in the story and the world.
Many times Stories have romantic sub plots (or the main plot).
It's akin to having housing. There's no "real" reason to have housing in a game but having it gives those players who want to actually feel part of the world, part of its back story and lore and having a sense of place.
As for romance it's for people who want to feel a part of the story who want to "role play" a character as if in a movie or book and want to role play a connection with the character's around them.
Obviously a "to each his/her own" component.
What this does is add a depth for those who can appreciate it.

Awww... that is adorable.... can i keep it.
Of course most people seem to be unable to grasp that gender (and by that extension sexuality) is pointless in storytelling. Way way to often a characters gender or sexuality becomes a defining factor rather then a deep and developed personality or... well... character. This is something i fear here to be honest, that his story will focus so much on his sexuality that they neglect the rest of the character.

What the hell are you talking about...There were relationships in old cRPG games and there were and are relationships in pen and paper RPGs.
Years ago when I played DnD, Shadowrun and a few other tabletop PnP games we didnt romance each other. And yes we had a few females, wives of some of the players, in the group. Certainly no bromance.
And there were relationships in some of the older rpgs, but nothing to the degree that BW seems to take.
I actually do enjoy the bioware games for the most part and do not care if they have this content or not. I just dont play it. I roleplay a badass saving the galaxy, world, continent or whatever. Last thing I care about is bromancing one of my companions, or romancing a female NPC. If you enjoy it then great, I am glad they added it for you.

Gotcha!

Some people really love to overreact. One news piece and somehow you believe that everything in the game is being neglected for the sake of one characters sexuality. Are you really not seeing how ridiculous what you wrote is. In every recent Bioware game sexuality was an aspect of the characters and was never the focus. Months of coverage of the world and engine and everything else, then one piece about a gay character comes and your whole world comes crashing down, jeebus.
The romance options are very popular. Playing characters of the opposite sex is very popular. Romancing the opposite sex while playing the opposite sex wasn't so popular.
I don't care about gay people any more than I care about what anyone else does. But if I can play a female character and make the screen fade to black with another female character, that would make me laugh.
I do kind of feel bad for homophobes though. The world must be a terrible place for you. Having all that irrational hate towards so many people must suck.
Originally posted by Scalpless So I suppose this is their marketing division trying to create a controversy and a backup plan to dismiss everyone who doesn't like their game as bigots, just like they did when the oh-so-progressive DA2 came out. I had hoped they'd stop screaming "WE'VE GOT GAY CHARACTERS" at the top of their lungs and simply make a good game, but eh. Maybe I'm just tired of BioWare, their poorly-written romances and EA's stale marketing.
This
It's only a controversy if you make it one. Marketing department or no marketing department.
If people are stupid enough to make this into an issue, then they deserve all the attention it gets them.
Especially in a gaming industry where the big fat majority of the playable characters is a white featureless male with a dark past and most attempts to change that are met with bullshit excuses.
You can always find some people who are stupid enough. Trying to rile them up is a usual marketing tactic that's especially useful when your product isn't particularly good. It used to be violence. Manhunt is a good example of that. It's just a crappy stealth game, but the completely intentional controversy around it lead to it becoming quite famous. Now BioWare is trying to get free marketing from the LBGT community and they've been moderately successful.
They even included that pilot guy in ME3, who was gay and had no almost personality beyond that.
I find it disturbing that so many gamers are against Bioware being inclusive in their games, especially in light of the fact that said players are not forced to be exposed to that content as it is easily avoided by obviously worded text. Thank you Bioware for remembering that not all of your customers are pre-pubescent straight white males.
Honestly I really wish they would leave this crap out of the game entirely... and by this crap I mean any romance in general be it straight, gay, LBGTXYZasdf, alien or whatever. It really just doesn't belong in the game.
People are saying it's marketing, but who the hell are they marketing too? 40 year old basement dwellers who never had a girlfriend/boyfriend that liver vicariously though game... Maybe I am narrow minded thinking that the games I want to play should just be about killing shit and a good "I'm the mother fucking hero" story line.
I think you misunderstand me (if the rest of your posts are anything to by) i do not think it is a bad thing that this character is in the game... In fact i pretty much praise them for it. But unlike what you seem to think, homosexuality is still looked at as a abnormality in many regions.
If you guys don't like the games, then take a hike you aren't welcome posting in a topic about one of it's many facets.
My only problem with this is that it's a mage. I think they should try to break the mold a little bit. Sure IRL most gay guys are a bit feminine, but many bulk up a lot to make up for it. Would be cooler to see a more brutish warrior type be gay.

While were at it let's remove romance from Fantasy books, Fantasy TV shows, Fantasy movies, Comics, Graphic Novels. Cause who needs it, it's not as if it's a major part of humanity and it is not as if it has not been in literature for millenia.

If you can not understand why other people have a differing opinion.. yes. Otherwise you are just bullheaded.. =P
Any way traditional western storytelling most of the time had the "hero" fighting for his "love". Most of the time a her but from time to time other things... That is why we have these elements in the game... After all it was not like Mario set out to save the princess because she defaulted him on a IOU... =P Also is not the entire US army built on fighting for the ones you love...
Maybe he is onto something. Maybe Homers Odyssey would have been better without the heroes motivation to once again see his wife. I think Romeo and Juliet without Juliet would have been a much more complete work.
We get enough homo thingies on tv, radio, movies, news etc, why also invade the game industry? Is not enough for you what you have already achieved?
Did it ever occur to you that people want to feel a connection with characters who are like them?
Maybe African Americans want to see more African Americans, maybe Asians want to see more people like them other than stereotypes, maybe Arabs want to be portrayed as more than terrorists?
Maybe people who are gay want to see more people who are gay?
Especially since, and hold on to your proverbial hat, there are gay people working on the very games you enjoy.

It would truly be bad if 1 character could kill a whole game. Put him in a closet and play the other chars.
A game like Dragon Age should not be avoided that easily!
Well unscripted romance would be awesome but I don't think games are there yet in terms of AI=)
And that part of your post is exactly why I will avoid the game.

Everything is scripted in a RPG, not just romance. So I guess they should stop making them as they will never work.

I don't see the point either to romance a bunch of pixels. I just play and enjoy the games and never bothered to "sandwich" any of the characters.
