Imagine the outcry when we finally get main characters that are not bald/short haired, muscular, white males with cigarette chain smoker voices and angst.

Did it ever occur to you that people want to feel a connection with characters who are like them?

Maybe African Americans want to see more African Americans, maybe Asians want to see more people like them other than stereotypes, maybe Arabs want to be portrayed as more than terrorists?

Maybe people who are gay want to see more people who are gay?

Especially since, and hold on to your proverbial hat, there are gay people working on the very games you enjoy.

Exactly. Basic common sense. Instead people have to rant, complain and act stupid over the simplest of things.

I don't consider caveman going all ape on something that trivial a controversy. Yea sure some people will go nuts over it but I never considered those people to play in the same ballpark anyway.

A controversy would need much more support from the general population and media.

I agree. Looking for romance? There are websites for that. Better yet, go out and meet people in person. Just quit throwing it in my face. I just wanna be a hero and slay dragons and whatnot.

How did you get into fantasy while avoiding the romance? Cause since it's inception as a genre, fantasy has always had romance in it.

What's interesting and amazing is that you can do that in DA:I. No one is forced to romance another character. Please. Feel free to slay dragons and whatnot. Those who wish to romance have the option to do so as much as you have the option not to.

Maybe we should see how Bioware portrays a "fully gay" person (whatever that means), before praising, comdemning and all this stuff inbetween I am reading, heh.

How about adding some interesting and fun characters? I don't care one bit if someone is gay (IRL or in a game) but Biowares characters have become worse and worse. In DA2 Isabella and whatever the dwarfs name was (my mind work funny because I do remember that his crossbows name was Bianca) were the only 2 acceptable characters, the rest of them were at best generic and at worst annoying.

Biowares best point used to be fun characters ("Go for the eyes, Boo"), when you make a game were interaction with your party is so important good npcs are crucial.

Maybe they should consider surprising us with interesting characters instead of just making some gay or bisexual to get media coverage.

Somehow I don't think those against it care about how a "fully gay" person is portrayed before making their opinions known.  Just the fact that he is, is more than enough.

The game you are looking for requiring no PvE completion and where you can just jump in and start mindlessly shooting at people is that way - >>>>

    ... it's called an FPS.

Quit ruining the MMORPG genre with your constant "PvE grind" whines.

I think the time of fun characters in relatively serious western RPGs is gone. If it's big budget it has to be super cereal. JRPGs have alot of those sort of characters, but they are usally badly written anime cliches.

Probably because you're under the impression that the inclusion they are not interested in is the gay guy and not the romance aspect. I normally don't care either way, because I can usually skip that stuff, but I can understand why others may find it undesirable.

It's kinda like when you're watching an action movie and they break from everything else the movie is about to do the love scene. I can't speak for other action movie fans, unless the movie is going the Drive Angry or Shoot Em Up route, I want the movie to cut straight from the embrace to breakfast. I paid my 16 bucks to see explosions and gunfights and monsters. That's kinda how I feel about romance in my games, too.

Well, you can skip that stuff while playing a video game. In fact you can skip this character completely just like other BW characters. I think some people are upset simply because it exists. Kind of like real life eh?

I imagine the "romance" in action movies are for the other people who were dragged to said "action movie" and have to put up with it.

They don't include this stuff "just because".

My question is who is the audience that wanted romance in these games?

Was the existing predominantly male audience asking for it? If so, maybe we need a lot more romance in these games.

Was it to attract more females to the game? If so, isn't that sexist?

Was it to attract more LGBTQ to the game? If so then that goes into the interesting territory of representation vs tokenism, the latter being the view often taken regarding the gay/minority sidekick in sitcoms and movies.

Who is the audience they are catering to with romance in this game? Did Scalpless hit the mark with his assessment, or are the people cheering about this actually going to buy it?

Even if you skip the romance....you still run into gay people in real life. The kind that are obviously gay. Having a companion being gay doesn't have to be a political statement, it can just be that this person happens to be gay. In which case the people complaining are doing little more than saying I want everyone in the game to be white and keep your PC race crap out of my game.

That the inclusion of a gay character in a video game is still seen as controversial really underlines why it's so important that characters like this are included.

One easy solution to the problem is to give you who want gay characters the ability when creating your character to choose if you want him or her to be gay, without having to force the rest of us to no play a particular race or class because it is a gay race/class.

So the amount of players who want to have sex RP with their toons is a minority, so stop the nonsense if you want to live and RP your gay lifestyle or gay fantasy is your right, I am not here to tell you not to do it, but do not push it on me, otherwise the same way you are demanding respect for your homo desires I could demand respect for my Christian beliefs.

What would you do if you had to work with someone of different orientation ? Would you ask to be transfered ?

How is having a gay character in a game pushing anything onto you ? Unless they force you to have sex with that character to further the story or something. You just have to accept that there are different people and that it shouldn't be a problem if they are represented in books, games, or movies.

Completely agree, and we can blame the media for that. Do a google news search for "Dragon Age". Every headline about this new game is pretty much "Look! Dragon Age has GAY!" It's done to get one side cheering and the other side seething. It's good for traffic, good for hits. It's trolling at its finest. Had every single headline not been regurgitation of the "fully gay" (what does that even mean?) PR message, you wouldn't ave the response you have.

I can totally see why some people might be expressing objection and YES, it's a knee-jerk reaction on their part, but it's the DA PR team and the gaming media that are swinging that little hammer with a message intended to incite them. Why? It's free advertising for one and good for site traffic for the other.

It's one of the companions not the player character. In every one of these games you've always had to pick who is going to be in your party and the rest just sit in camp ( or where you find them ) so they are giving you a choice. Choose not to bring him along and you'll never see him.

The cash shops in these types of games reflect the player base.
