Yes, when straight people are made to feel hated simply for whom they choose to prefer
People of all walks of life are hated by someone.
There you go. No straight person character will ever need an announcement. You asking is completely stupid
Why is it stupid? Is my sexual identity less important than yours?
Was your life or freedom ever threatend because of your heterosexuality?
No but it has been threatend for other aspects of my life that define me, are you saying one is more severe than the other?
Don't care we are discussing sexuality and yes in this case your sexual identity is less important. Of course the view varies on the place where you live. Where I am homosexuals are discriminated against, laughed at and demonised on a regular basis, which is why a developer taking on the issues is a bigger deal then it would be in a place that is more open. Maybe you simply don't see the issue because it is not made an issue where you are.
I play video games to escape real life.
So? Games reflect life whether you like it or not. That means that the chance of running into social commentary is very high. That does not prevent games from being an escape. Anyway everyone plays games and especially rpgs are escapist fantasies. "Everyone" includes hetero, homo, trans and everyone else. Everyone should have the ability to lose themselves in a game where they can find characters that represent them and allow them to get immersed in a character.
My question is who is the audience that wanted romance in these games?
Was the existing predominantly male audience asking for it? If so, maybe we need a lot more romance in these games.
Was it to attract more females to the game? If so, isn't that sexist?
Was it to attract more LGBTQ to the game? If so then that goes into the interesting territory of representation vs tokenism, the latter being the view often taken regarding the gay/minority sidekick in sitcoms and movies.
Who is the audience they are catering to with romance in this game? Did Scalpless hit the mark with his assessment, or are the people cheering about this actually going to buy it?
What you basically just did was demonize any group of people who would want such things in their games.
So if they are catering to straight men then it should be added.
If they are catering to women then that's sexist.
If they are catering to the LGBTQ community it has to be about representation vs tokenism.
but again, if it's straight men then it should be added.
My idea? It's that the creators of the game wanted to add it because they aren't just monkeys who turn cranks and turn out video games. They are artists, creators, writers, etc and they have something to say and they are saying it through the medium they work in.
This is so brilliantly stated. Why are the ostensible wishes of "straight men" the only ones that should be honored?
Additionally, why is this, an optional portion of the game so controversial? Romance in general, and so-called "gay" romance in particular, are not required to progress the story. It is a fully optional portion of the overall game. For those who wish to save the world as a single unattached character, brilliant. For those who choose to save the world as a romanced character, brilliant as well.
What Bioware has done is bring a reflection of the real world into its roleplaying game. Believe it or not, most of us actually know people who are gay or lesbian. Why is having a representation of that fact in DAI a bad thing?
How the fuck did you get the ostensible wishes of straight men are the only ones that should be honored from any of my posts in this thread?
"Believe it or not, most of us actually know people who are gay or lesbian. Why is having a representation of that fact in DAI a bad thing?"
Are you trolling, or just falsely assuming - despite each post I have made providing evidence to the contrary - that I had any problem with romance/love/gay/sex/etc included in the game? What is with your snarky response?
You basically asked "who are they giving this to, who is asking for it".
It pretty much looked like you were saying if they are catering to straight men and what they want then fine but if they are catering to other groups then not fine.
That's what it at least looked like to me. If that is not what you intended then just clarify yourself, no reason to go off the handle.

Hopefully we can reach that point where announcing a character is gay will be as silly as announcing they are straight. Right now, though, you have the combination of extreme under-representation and media sensationalism combined, making the former a rather high hurdle to jump.
When the original Star Trek came out, I doubt the producers ever considered putting out a press release saying "Star Trek: First 'fully black' Bridge Officer Revealed" They chose to be progressive rather than to sell progress. Maybe they were short-sighted in their marketing, or maybe they realized the best way to move forward is to just move forward and not make a circus act out of it.
They simply stated that the character is gay. I don't see that as sensationalism. The response from those who oppose, or from those who find issue with it, is what is sensational. It really doesn't have to be sensational at all. I am quite certain gay people would be perfectly fine with it if the masses were to ignore it or treat it as a non issue.

I actually agree with you here.
The problem (and I know you have been on these forums for a long time so you must have seen this) is that there have been people very unhappy with the inclusion of people who were gay. There have been posts where people have actually asked for them to list this on the game box so that people could make the choice to not purchase.
So do they really do this or do they just make an announcement?
In truth there is a bit of sensationalism about this but there was also sensationalism about the first bi-racial relationships to appear in movies.

How about all female gay scenes...kinda sexist to leave that out isn't it? Inter-racial couples...kind of racist to leave that out isn't it? In today's day and age you need to be equal to everyone...slippery slope here someone may get offended...

It causes a stir, just like it does outside of the game. It's very reasonable for a person to feel he plays games to escape it.

Your post "assumes" that this particular homosexual character is not also being viewed as flamboyant comic relief to some. My point is that based on the opinions expressed in this thread it is obvious that many do not share your opinion. Be that as it may, you are entitled to your opinion and it has been duly noted.

The games industry is at a point where developers spout contrived excuses why there are no playable female characters so I don't see why EA wouldn't tout diversity in Dragon Age. They have always had it so it is not as if it's new. It would be silly of them not to use it to stir up conversation and free publicity. EA as crap as they are don't make gay characters to be able to say they have gay characters. They make them because they've always tried to be inclusive.
Also EA would be stupid not to exploit the pathetic state of games journalism.
As for the movies, at least what I remember from Uni, inter racial couples or even kisses were a huge deal. They did not need advertising. As in active advertising on the part of the studio. The media picked those stories up and ran with them. It was a time where an inter racial kiss could ruin a career.

Yeah, they did. There are a lot of movies from the 50's to the 70's that did just that.
You see, that's part of the problem here. This stuff has been going on for YEARS. But most gamers it seems have a very short term memory if they were even alive at that time at all or even had any interest in old movies.
Island in the Sun was late 50's. Good luck Miss Wyckoff was late 70's.
And some of these movies weren't just black/white but with Asians, American Indians, etc.
I think there are a few that go back to the 20's and earlier.

And equal rights can never be a bad thing now can it.

Thanks for the info, and I'm glad you cited a few examples of the 'taboo' relationships they were selling. Well, I wouldn't really call the two in Good Luck a relationship but that's neither here nor there.

How about adding some interesting and fun characters? I don't care one bit if someone is gay (IRL or in a game) but Biowares characters have become worse and worse. In DA2 Isabella and whatever the dwarfs name was (my mind work funny because I do remember that his crossbows name was Bianca) were the only 2 acceptable characters, the rest of them were at best generic and at worst annoying.
Biowares best point used to be fun characters ("Go for the eyes, Boo"), when you make a game were interaction with your party is so important good npcs are crucial.
Maybe they should consider surprising us with interesting characters instead of just making some gay or bisexual to get media coverage.
I think the time of fun characters in relatively serious western RPGs is gone. If it's big budget it has to be super cereal. JRPGs have alot of those sort of characters, but they are usally badly written anime cliches.
They don't have to be comical, just well written and fun to have in the group. Half the DA2 npcs were whiny EMO kids who complained all the time.
In some RPGs there have been great npcs we still can remember with an interesting personality and that actually were interesting and added something to the game. Baldurs gate didn't have a specially good story but that didn't matter because you had tons of fun group members that made playing it fun.
DAs combat isn't anything special and the world feels like most fantasy worlds so we need something if they actually want us to play the game. Good npcs can actually get you very far in a RPG. Torment for example had very fun npcs, it was the only good with it but still did me and most of my friends play through the entire game and having fun while doing it.
A story is carried forward by it's characters after all. Reading a book about someone who complains all the time and is just a cardboard copy of Conan just isn't fun and the same goes for a game unless the combat is awesome.
There you go. No straight person character will ever need an announcement.

They also claim to have had the first interracial kiss. Looking back Nichelle Nichols said it was groundbreaking and changed the industry dramatically. At the time they didn't sell, market, and PR that progress, they just did as though it was normal.
Obviously Biowares PR stunt has worked. People are talking about the game and I have no doubt that many will support it primarily for the "groundbreaking stand it's making". I think they're using homosexuality as a marketing gimmick and not because the writing team came up with an interesting relational line where the character was gay. They did it solely so they could make the PR announcement they did.
What does "fully gay" mean anyway? Is this as opposed to 97% gay? This is a completely different universe. Why did they have to make the gay man a victim of his order and a deviant. There is no reason this imagined universe had to treat his sexuality as deviant. They did it to generate controversy and illicit an emotionally supportive response. Instead of dignifying the person as normal, they've victimized him as an oppressed deviant. That's marketing not story telling. They certainly know how to push buttons though don't they.
All their previous characters that allowed same sex relationships were bisexual.

The problem is that these days devs can't even copy Conan correctly=) It often feels as if main characters are made bland and simple on purpose. Kinda like Gordon Freeman is a characterless husk so that supposedly people can identify better with the hero, bullshit if you ask me.
I also remember how funny and witty old rpgs could get. Both from Bioware and of course Black Isle. Also, like I said I think those days are gone for whatever reason. The best we have had in recent times is the Fable series, but that has a completely different feel. That of a fairy tale rather than a fantasy.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

You should seek help for that.

Well, at least we are at a point where not all homosexual characters are flamboyant comic relief. That's something.

You're making broad assumptions. This thread makes it painfully obvious that some are still of the opinion that homosexual characters are flamboyant comic relief.

Oh c'mon, brother. You know his response is legit. How many threads and rage post pop up because a poster board has a real ad in it? You can't tell me you haven't seen "I don't want [politics/relgion/brands/IRL] in My games!" post before...
No idea why you are replying to my post. I know there are still "some" that are comic relief, that is why I said "not all".
It causes a stir, just like it does outside of the game. It's very reasonable for a person to feel he plays games to escape it.
Did those movies make a point to put out a trailer/news item saying that they have 'fully mixed' love interests?
TO BE CLEAR... I am asking that question because I don't know. In the case of Dragon Age, Bioware sent out this mass message, which is why you see the same exact title across 50+ media outlets.

I think there are a few that go back to the 20's and earlier.

yeah say what you want about EA but that have actually won awards for their work on workplace equal rights. So yes this is ofc marketing.... but it is also a step forward of done right...
And equal rights can never be a bad thing now can it.
This have been a good conversation
Better equal rights advertising then bullshots and lies *cough* Watchdogs *cough*=)
Thanks for the info, and I'm glad you cited a few examples of the 'taboo' relationships they were selling. Well, I wouldn't really call the two in Good Luck a relationship but that's neither here nor there.

And someone asked why there'd be controversy. I think I heard a champagne bottle pop. Must be the party at EA's marketing department.
All their previous characters that allowed same sex relationships were bisexual.
