i think what the dev want to tell players is that "if you can't play this game for 2-3 hours then it is not for you, you can just fuck off. we don't need your money." and i kinda agree with them. do we really need more instant gratification so called mmorpg?

That's part of the appeal. Definitely for me.
However, and I know you've all heard this one before, "you have to get to level 30" blah blah blah.
But it's true.
You see, the game isn't necessarily about the quests. I would say that "the game" is about what you do in relation to other players, the crafting, selling, farming, sieges, stealing from others, judging of others in court, pvp, etc.
That's the game.
So if you haven't really experienced that stuff then you haven't really played it yet. If none of that stuff appeal to you then this is not the game for you.
If you are the type of person who says "but the game should grab me from level 1" I would say "sure! Why not!".
But that's not this game.
Again you like a lot of people are forgetting, you have to get to 30 first and if it isn't fun people are not going to do it.
No, I am not forgetting. You can read my post again.
Or I'll make it easier for you:
The game is not about the quests nor is it about the 1-29 journey though that is a bit tutorial and "may" be enjoyable to some.
It is about the 30+ game of player interaction.
If you say the game should be "fun" from level 1 I say "sure that would be great and is the way things should be" but that is not how they made this game.
So your choices are "persevere" (as Kyleran put it and I'm "about" his age, only younger and more vibrant and alive ) to the point that has the meat of the game or move on.
I don't believe in naval gazing. at all.
One can do that all day but it's not going to get you anywhere. You can either see the bigger picture and aim for it or you can move on.
I think either is fine as no one should have to do something they don't want to do. BUT since there is a game here that does have a more interesting game as you go on one "might" make the decision to see what it is about.
If you can.
No forgetting from me, nor judgement, I know how people are made.
To be honest, the whole art design and clash of time periods is the biggest turn off for me.
And it's a real turn off. I cringe at how this world was mashed together. Now, I could say "nope, can't do it" or I can "grin and bear it" for the game that is offered.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Well I'm not level 30 yet and I find the game entertaining... hell 2 hours flew by like it was 10 minutes. That say to me, entertaining. If you have to get to level 30 to enjoy this game, pretty sure you won't like it at 30 either. It's just the nature of the game.
I think in most cases if your heart is really into a game before it releases, getting to a certain level is not the issue. The trouble is getting those that are on the fence to try and get to that point. I started the last beta and stopped because it looked pretty much like all the rest of the games I had seen before. Once it truly releases I will probably put more effort into it, and I'm sure a lot more people will do he same. Now that I know the magical number is 30, I have a goal to shoot for!
The fact that you still are hung up on the magical 30 number proves without a doubt this game has no calling for you .......if you follow the on rail 1-30 quest hub route @ 30 you'll have 5 gold , a rowboat , a glider , level 18 mount , a set of gear ,a couple of weapons and 60-75 gilda stars ( your fucked ) ....if you start out with a plan and an open mind and play this game like it's a sandbox @ 30 you'll have a house , a boat , couple of farms , a good glider ,150+ gold , crafting well on it's way , a set of gear and few weapons , a solid mount @ level 30+ and ++++++ a good guild of similar minded folks ( you become a winner )
If you came to AA to play a game of power creep quests and lobby sitting LFG dungeons runs ...you are really in the wrong spot and it would be much more advisable for you to play a hand holding game like GW2 ,ESO, Wildstar or the old puppy love #1 WOW
I'm not hung up on any numbers...well maybe the number 69. Anyway, read my post again and try and be happy while you read it. It may mean something different to you this time. Not everyone is out to get you!
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
I felt the same way as the OP. I'm going to try it a couple more times and give it a fair chance, but wasn't this game made with CryEngine3? I feel they didn't use the engine to the maximum potential they could have used it to. Also, the mechanics seem dated. I liked the route that ESO was taking of minimizing hot bars, left click=left hand right click=right hand, and explore to pick up quests. I feel like AA is going backwards in the progression of MMOs. No more quest hubs or zone questing.
At least you got it to launch, mine is not even launching
And people are saying you gotta redirect folders and mess with registry and stuff...seriously? I shouldnt have to do anything technical for a game thats been released already in two other countries and been through several betas.
That's for folks who have altered the standard setup of their windows environment. I think if you're a tinkerer, you're going to have to tinker with the app to get it to work for you... because you're the one with the non-standard setup.
As for them fixing some things... I doubt certain things will ever get fixed... like the redirect thing. Most people don't use it, thus it's not something they see as game breaking to them. You do a fresh install of Windows on your machine, it's going to put files in a certain place, that's what they coded for, not the unique setups people come up with.
MEH is the perfect word to sum up the game. A game should be fun from start to end game. I am in beta and will keep trying to like it but no game should start being fun at lvl 30. I look and play the game and I just think it is so bland.
This game appeals to a certain kind of player, not everyone is going to like it. I think people who played Star Wars Galaxies or Ultima Online might like it. It has player housing. You can be a pirate or raise animals, etc. There's a lot more freedom compared to other games out there.

Why would the Towns people be red to you? You may be in the wrong town!! And to me, a town full of NPC towns people, moving around, talking to each other and going about NPC life, shows the developers cared enough to put that "extra little" touch on the game. Hell, the air ship doesnt even have a pilot. But again, just my opinion.
The magical number 30 is a design choice the developers have made. Make no mistake, this is a very popular criticism of the game as it is.
If the first 30 levels are turning off so many people it will become an issue for the longevity of the game. Or do you not want this game to succeed? MMOs need to have players to survive. I don't understand why this is difficult for some people to understand.
He is not attacking the game, he is offering a valid criticism that many others have echoed.
If one doesn't want to research and feels like quitting after 30 min he/she is free to do so and it's perfectly fine.
There are 137 other mmorpgs, surely one can find a game that is good enaugh?
Oh wait, you can't? Ever thought that maybe the problem is You and not some quasi excuse used by bored gamer junkies who look for instant gratification...
Just incase my point flew over the head... my point is the first few hours of a good mmorpg are the least important factor, because if the rest of the game is good enaugh every cry baby around here will eat their tears and grind up 287 levels instead of 30 if so needed, just to experience whatever good they believe is on the end of the road.
Feature wise, its doing pretty well... but how its executed is questionable. I also found the game hard to play due to what I can only describe as a lack of quality and interesting design choices. I think between when the game was announced and the time everyone got to play it, the bar went up in terms of expectations for quality.

So don't play, it will be ok there are many other games.
Go play the game you like, then you will be happy.
Stay away from stuff you don't like, very good advice.
You will be missing what I think is a great game, but it is unplayable for you so be happy you did not have to pay to find this out.

Maybe or maybe not but deciding if you like a game or not just on the tutorial (or whatever you call the first few levels) is a mistake. I seen both games that were promising the first few hours but sucked and games that felt uninspired at first until I got the general picture right and then became fun.
Of course in some cases you do see that a game wont work out at the first few minutes, like horrible controls or an artsyle that just is so bad I can't standing watching it but that is rather rare at least for me.
I think OP should give it a weekend and get to 35 or so before deciding unless he really can't stand it (if that is the case nothing will change his mind anyways, some games just don't work for everyone).
I do think they made an error when designing the game here though, opening up the farms at 30 is far too late, they will lose more than a few players on that.

Well it just isn't. It can be more fun if you have a bit of knowledge, after following the quest chains to 50 I now understand there are other ways to level to 50, and likely when the game goes live questing will be a much smaller part of my experience.
This game requires you to learn how to play, to pay your dues as it were, which old school MMO's used to make everyone do, but modern ones not so much.

Trion is real good about giving refunds.
They have refunded people that got banned then asked for a refund and they gave it, refunded people that had been playing six weeks and changed their mind etc.
I do understand your frustration, one guy I play with uses and inverted mouse he is on his second work around, Trion has said it will be added but not by launch. He is not happy but is still playing.
Russian release had like six servers, had ques of 8 hours and crap on them.
Two weeks in they had like 12 servers and they kept getting ques.
Four weeks in they had 22 servers, I moved servers three times to get away from the LONG ques, I play NA prime that is the off time for those servers. Was in a guild with over 500 English speaking guild mates and was not the only English guild on that server on that faction.
Trion was going to have one alpha server for 150 dollars a pop they filled two.
I think it will be around long enough down the road all this stuff will be added you can give it a try then, after all it will be F2P.

If you have to 'push through to level 30', then perhaps the game developers should reevaluate their game design. It's 2014, man. That's all I have to say.
No really, we need a better breed of players, who have the patience and perseverance to see things through to the end. I realize these are perhaps generational values and perhaps you can't help yourself.
These were virtues back in the day, they can be again.
As others have mentioned, if you can't/won't do this, AA is definitely not the game for you, walk away now.
When it comes to work ethic, absolutely there is a generational thing where hard work and dedication is lacking if not absent in some individual cases, but games are ENTERTAINMENT and anyone that says you must have patience and perseverance to see things through to end is out of their mind when it comes to entertainment. Most play games to have fun, not to show patience and persevere to the end before fun begins. Masochistic much?
It doesn't equate to a better breed of player either. It breeds players that blindly accept the garbage that is constantly pushed out of studios. It breeds players with decreased objectivity and standards of what makes a good game. Better players don't accept a bad game design and make excuses for it and hint that those that quit aren't good gamers.
You are correct in one aspect though. The MMO community does need a better breed of gamer. We need gamers that refuse to settle for companies serving up a plate of steaming crap and calling it filet mignon. You may want to persevere through a plate of hot, juicy, aromatic dung before you make up your mind, but if it tastes bad on the first bite, I'm not eating anymore. I may be a lesser gamer to you, but I'm content in knowing that I don't have to eat an entire pile of crap to know it wasn't filet.
Now, I do understand that some people love this game and there is nothing at all wrong with that. We are all different and like different types of games, but to insult people that refuse to get to this awesome level 30 as being a lower breed of gamer is just plain ignorant. In fact, they very well may be ten times the gamer you ever will be but would rather have fun from level 1.
Keep telling yourself you are virtuous in all your endeavors though. I just hope you can hold your head high on those occasions when you realize that your breathe stinks and your teeth are brown. The toothbrushes are that way ---->
