I would argue that people who go through arduous tasks in Video games in order to be better are probably taking that attitude.
I would also argue that what this comes down to is the themepark vs sandbox argument (yet again) and that players who prefer sandbox games are usually on board with the bits and bobs and bits of tedium that come from gathering, crafting, selling and essentially doing what it takes to carve their way in the world. Whereas those who are looking for a more thempark experience are looking to just get on a fun ride "in the moment".
I wouldn't disagree with any of that. Although I'd add sandboxes don't need to be just about that. I'd argue sandboxes tend to be less tedious for my playstyle, they're also less rigid when it comes to mechanics they force a player to run through to get the most out of the experience. There is far less required of a player to excel at a given thing.

I have come back to this game for at least 3 betas (US version) and I have played it on the Russian version previously. I have logged more than an hour in the game, but I do share your impressions and feelings of the game.
I really want to like this game, because it does offer some great game play concepts..... and there in lies the problem.... they are great concepts. The game itself has a "been there, done that" feel and just makes it really hard to get past the first 30 levels in hopes of something more exciting and fun after.
The feel of the UI is something out of 2004, early EQ days and leaves little flexibility for people like me who want to tweak it to my play style (I do see an addon file so maybe modders will fix this). The combat is laggy and unresponsive at times. After I switched to a private gaming server it got better, but Trion/XLgames has not put much into latency response into their servers.
Like I said I really want to like this game, but so far it is not a top pick.
