Played 30 minutes, not sandbox???

TheeLordTheeLord Member UncommonPosts: 138

I'm sorry I didn't see my answer on first page and did not search at all.

I played for 30 minutes last night, there was nothing remotely sandboxy about the game, in fact maybe most linear MMO I've tried in years.  Is this just the tutorial?  Is there a way to skip the tutorial?  Does the world open up hugely after this?  When does that happen?  How much of a "sandbox" is the game after that point?

Thanks so much!

The first 30 or so levels is very much a typical themepark leveling experience. After level 30, when you are more or less out in the world more, then the game opens up. Trade Runs, Planting Crops, etc. really opens up right around then. The leveling is fast paced enough where 1-30 shouldn't take more than a handful of hours. Hell, I played super casually in CBT 3 (few hours a day and played a few different characters) and got to 18 on two different characters.

Are you trolling? Invest some more hours playing and then form an opinion. Your answers will probably be answered then. Just to be clear: I don't play AA, but with every other MMO: you can't tell what sort of game it is after 30 minutes of play.

Level 30 is really just when land-based PVP opens up.

Farming and trade runs kick in around level 11.

There shouldn't be much that is "sandboxy" in a tutorial for a sandbox-focused game. The purpose of those first 30 minutes or so is to get you familiar with the game mechanics and the features of the game. That's harder to do if you're just dumped into a game world and allowed to wander freely at first.

To be fair, the game deceives a lot of people for the first hour.

If you're on Haranya you don't even get a rowboat until the mid teens.

I find the Nuia questing area better because you get a much earlier mount and rowboat and you do several climbing tasks.  That helps newbies distinguish it from themepark du jour.

While i strongly believe that a good game hooks the player in the first few minutes (not even an hour), i have to say that 30 minutes is not enough to find a specific feature like a sandbox environment when you dont even have the tools to interact with it. I would say the sandbox is there, you just cant reach it so early. Unfortunately, gotta deal with a generic themepark for a while first.

I spent more than 30 minutes yesterday in character creation alone.

It never claimed to be a sandbox.

The 1st 30 minutes of any game, whether sandbox or not is usually linear because its a tutorial type. Try the first 30 minutes of wurm.

Ah the good old days when you were just dumped into a game world and told to go have fun. Sadly we'll never see another one of those again.

    Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard

Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.

So I am correct in my assessment that I would be running lots of static quests, using looted items, not worrying about other players etc.. etc.. for most of my game time?

From the description of the game, I thought it would be much more open and "do whatever you like" type of experience.

OP, its not tutorial, the whole game looks like that (1-50).

Calling it Sandbox (Sandpark) is form of excuse for not having endgame, but sorry it doesnt work like that. Generic themepark with no endgame does not make it sandbox.

Before you can say it isn't that, you have to state what you think fantasy-sandbox is first, because if you're looking for a needle and don't even know what a needle is, you wouldn't even know one if you saw one.

I disagree, if the game doesn't hold your interest in the first 30mins it's going to be a slog all the way. But to answer the OP, you could not do the quests and level a different way, nobody is forcing you. I'm sure there's a list somewhere of key quests to get things like gliders, your first farm, etc... just do those. Play the rest of the game your way.

Minecraft, UO, SWG, Xsyon, Mortal all good examples that are implemented to various levels of satisfaction..  Other games like Rust, DayZ etc... Are also good examples.

This???  Quest, finish quest, reward, repeat

And if the experience is different at level 11 or level 30 or max level, well why????  I don't have the patience to play another linear MMO through to get to something I want, been there done that a dozen times.

This person is clearly trolling. Anyone who has ever played Archeage knows its a sandbox. Anyone who has ever played a MMO knows you cant judge it by only playing 30 min.

Heres a tip, level past 10, and then go experience the game.

EDIT---- If you dont have the patience to level up to get to the good things that come later on in the game, perhaps you shouldnt be playing a MMO? Makes sense to me.

oh no..do not fall into that trap of symantics.

I dont care what they call themselves, that game was not interesting and barely innovative.

Dude, I'm not trying to troll, I'm just interested in knowing if I need to spend hours to get to some actual good sandbox play or if my suspicion as a burnt out MMO player is true and this is just like all the rest with some better crafting or PVP or whatever they define sandbox as....

This. why is so importante, whatever game is called sanbox, themepark, sandpark or whaever name people invented meanwhile?

What matters is what the game is and have to offer.

I delete the rest of the sentence because i dont agree whith image

I know you want to hit the point home that you don't like the game, but really, if he has no idea what a fantasy-sandbox is, how can he say it's not?  Plus, if he states what he thinks it should be, it's far easier to tell him whether those elements exist or not than to guess what he thinks the game should be.

The answer is that is not sandbox for "you". so basically all you have to do is go back to buggy dead games like xsyon or mortal or df. goodluck.

Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.
