After the numerous posts from JC-Smith and Josh Halls on these forums explaining the PvE-PvP dynamics in the game, I'm a bit dumbfounded to see posts like these again.
The landmass in the game is the equivalent of many times what some other games offer; it's as though they had a PvE + a PvP server maps stitched together on the same server. And there is no forced PvP because ALL of the content tier is accessible from PvE-only zones.
The upside is that the game will be F2P, so players will be able to try it risk-free, without spending a dime and see if it works for them.
This is what I'd like to see more sandbox games do, have PvE and PvP on the same world but not on top of eachother. I like world PvP, when I'm at 100% focus I love it, but sometimes you just want to relax, and then I dont even login to pure PvP games, it's just no fun if you cant commit fully to it.

I'm absolutely sure that they've promised a fully developed PvE game on the Normal rulest, with the option to particpate in PvP if you want to. That seems fairly clear to me. A fully developed PvE game, to me, suggests access to everything you need, including resources.
This is what they are doing
Question now is what is the rate of the better resources in the PvE zones to PvP zones?
I'm thinking that's the kind of stuff that will be established during balance passes in Beta; if you haven't yet, you can signup here : https://www.therepopulation.com/index.php/alpha-form so you'll have a chance to give your input at one point
also to refer to the majority of PvP'ers as wolves is false....mostly they are parasites destroying the host.
There is truth to this. I'm reminded of playing EQ2 where the high level PVP consisted mostly of me chasing would be "top-tier wolves" until they would escape by committing suicide. These "strongest" players would camp for easy kills but then kill themselves to avoid the possibility of losing in a fair fight. They considered themselves to be the hardcore PVPers but would only fight if they grossly outnumbered or outleveled their target.
Still, I had a lot of fun PVPing in that game so I can't complain.

I've filled out the survey, sent emails and all that. As long as the content and resource availability is the same in the PVE zones as it is in the PVP zones, I don't care....but if that's not the case, than it's an issue.

Depends on how you define "availability"; there will be less people harvesting in Contested Areas (aka PvP area), so more resources available without having to work as much to get them, with a trade-off of a higher risk (which you can mitigate).
I can't get my head around people who are so against PVP.
If you were killed a few times in PVE, would you quit the game? No, you'd round up your friends, get back out there and praise the game makers for creating such challenging and adaptive AI! Games programmers are constantly pressured by us (mmo players) to make realistic AI, Mobs that don't roll over in a fight or predictably cycle through attacks or stupidly lose interest in you if you move away from there spawn point. Hard core mobs that take time and good strategy to overcome, requiring many, MANY losses on the way to victory.
But if its another player who happens to get the upper hand, oh that's different, that requires you to quit the game blame the demise of every MMO that ever ended on broken pvp, and possibly start an online poll's about games that haven't yet released.
I don't do this to troll, and I too love PVE. But it makes me wonder how fragile some people must be IRL to end up fearing loss against real people so much, in a game.
I enjoy pvp games, I've never been great at pvp and often lose much more than I win, I am not some 'l33t gamer who pawns your lootz' on the great scale of things I'm a pretty average gamer. I could go on rambling about how annoyingly unrealistic it is to find an online world where people can't hit each other, or the knowledge that the guy who keeps spamming chat channels will never be killed for being an ass. But the real reason I couldn't play a game without pvp is their's nothing more realistic, unpredictable and challenging than a real player. For me 'The Repopulation' pvp areas must have better resourses, some reason to go there, some risk vrs reward, without it I'll loose intrest fast, but I won't be making an online poll.
I believe the OP is beyond my message, but I ask anyone who is against PVP and could be arsed to read all this to try a PVP game, and pretend the enemy are just well written AI, this shouldn't be to hard, after all most of us spend hours a day in online worlds pretending to be elven wizards, paladins or space ships.
(Am i being too honest if I admit to wanting to reply "cry more"?)
PvE does not camp...there is little surprise attacks....there usually is not the loss of items.
It would if it was well written and challenging. And if a game's ecconomy is well thought out item loss should not be such an issue, you wouldn't venture into pvp areas in your best shineys, and loseing gear, while being annoying, shouldn't be game breaking.
These things above are what usually comes with PvP...that is why battlegrounds are so popular
Battlegrounds are popular? Open world pvp is the only pvp Im intrested in, If i want to duel someone in a pre aranged fight with even numbers I'll play an FPS.

you do realize you are not the majority...WoW and many other games showed us the majority want controlled PvP settings..aka battlegrounds. As to the other part about gear. That might be fine for you, but many just do not want to bother with it. Do not want to be camped or griefed. Want to carry out the game the way they want with out some idiot jumping in and attacking them when they have not chance to fight back.

If the majority ruled, we'd only have one mmo, and that would be WoW. Probably a version without any sort of PVP. I speak for myself, if i want support I'll start an online poll. I, much like the OP, am simply stating my own opinion. Luckily for me 'The Repopulation' is not being designed by 'the majority'.

Again with the camping and griefing.... Have you ever tried to win a game but lost many times in PVE? Do you consider this camping and griefing? Would it make you quit?
I once played a game on my nintendo game boy where i was camped and griefed.... Tetris, every damb game i played the roof just camped and griefed me, it killed me every game I ever played. I would recommend it to you but you'd probably quit.

you miss my point. I don't care about winning or losing...I want to do what I want to do without interruption. Has nothing to do with winning and losing. I play Madden Football online and lose sometimes and win sometimes...when I play an MMORPG, I have NO desire to compete with other players. I want to make my story...thus the idea of Role Playing Game.
To think that we are just a bunch whiney babies that get butt-hurt because we lose is so far from the truth. that's really the definition of a griefer...no, we just want to be left alone so we can have our idea of fun.
Originally posted by CrazKanuk You know what's funny? I am not really a huge fan of PvP. I'll do it when I have to, but that's pretty much it. However, I think that there are times when it "fits". I just feel like offering PvE only servers in a game like this sort of undermines a lot of the core game. Like the whole idea of Nations is, basically, PvP. I would rather see the game released before any of this. In this particular case, I don't think it's merely a matter of creating a PvE only server, I think there are LOTS of changes that would need to be made.
I do get what you're saying, but I dont want any open world forced PVP. I think it automically toxifies a game. As you said, they'd have to do extensive legwork, but shouldn't they have realized by now that alot of the people really looking forward to this game are old SWG players or those looking for a similar experience?
Understandable feelings but that doesn't give you the right to dictate what kind of game someone else creates. There are ample games available with the kind of PVE ruleset you desire. Please stop trying to force this company to change their game design to accommodate you when its obviously not the kind of game they wish to make.

I lol'd at this. Im putting together a petition...not a pipe bomb. A petition is the best way for a company to hear multiple voices in one shot. It's the "correct" way to protest.
Nobody is forcing anything on anyone. It's a request. I don't and won't have a gun to their head. Please, next time...before you post, understand what's going on before reacting as if a full blown riot is going on right outside the Repop's doors...
Btw, as said before, The Repop is making a Hardcore PVP server already....So why have open PVP on the normal server? That's the only question I ask and I think it's worth asking.

I agree, discussing it on interwebs forum civilly and doing petitions are the right way to voice your opinion, pipe-bombs, trolling and disinformation aren't
Why having server rulesets that way?
1- because the hardcore server ruleset will foster and cater to much different PvP than the optin/optout PvP offered on the normal ruleset;
2- because the two gameplay styles, full PvE and optin/optout PvP, aren't mutually exclusive and can coexist without being detrimental to one another, giving a broader audience more choices on how they play every day on the same server;
3- ultimately, because its all about giving choices to reduce community fragmentation; the broader the server, the less you fragment your community, the more chances it has to be healthy.

Your all the same you PVE'ers, we know the pipe bombs come later....
But seriously, as someone else in this thread kindly pointed out to me, us PVP'ers are in the minority. And the market has followed this by providing hundreds, possibly thousands of theme park PVE MMO's by both AAA and indie companys. (which 'The Repopulation' should avoid being in competition with)
Recently though, the idea of sandbox games with an edge towards PVP seems to have come back in fashion. Great news for people like me! But the fact of it is, you, me and the game producers know where the majority still sit, with both feet firmly in PVE land and we don't need POLL's to show this.
I only post here in the hope some of the people so turned off by PVP can give it a shot and embrace it the way I have!

Said Wow and others. There is a reason people love FPS matches, MOBA's, hell even card games. All the PvP oriented MMORPGS tend to have small populations compaired to other games. People like to compete not be beat like they are an infant fighting an adult.

As to the camping and griefing...No. Those are challenges I have choosen. It is not a lvl 90 coming to kill my lvl 10. In PvE people tend to go after challenges that are atleast at a level that one can have a chance. If all that happened day in and day out was my lvl 10 getting killed every 15 minutes by a high level I would not play the game...Nice to see your arrogance is still working....Tetris is a game of increasing difficulty. Eventually you will lose no matter what. MMO's are no where near the same, but I guess for you you can not tell the difference. Some people will spend all day hitting a rock and call it fun....I guess that is what you call fun.

What? People like cards because EVE has a small population?

Again, Im..... What?
Im a little lost with your posts so I will have to improvise.
I would like to help you, I have no idea which pvp MMO's left you feeling like an Infant fighting an adult, that sounds like a really bad game. I'm going to ask you to imagine a good MMO you have played, now imagine that same mmo but bigger, with a risky area far far away, an area you NEVER need to visit, but if you risk it, many nice goodys await! Don't carry your best gear there because you could get killed and lose it! (now even I'm excited!) You should probably go there with friends! Heck I'll come with you because this sounds like an ADVENTURE! Whats that you say? your not going? you want to do the "kill 3 trolls quest" again? Ok, i'll play tetris while i wait......

Yeah, it all makes sense, Im just always wary when open world PVP is intertwined with PVE (as disconnected from the PVE part as it might be.) PVP'ers are a different breed than PVE'ers...our ideas of fun don't always mix well...they mix more like oil and water :P

I think that you are thinking like a PVP'er bingo...try thinking like me...a very casual PVE player who just wants an escape from real life when I got online.
Step 1: Get beer
Step 2: Drink Beer
Step 3: Login to game
Step 4: Do a dungon with guildies or something else
Step 5: Be wasted while we do it and wipe alot but laugh the entire time
Step 6: Go explore...the world will seem a tad different intoxicated
Step 7: Get tired, log off and go to sleep
Wake up in the morning
Step 1: Login
Step 2: Grab some mats to either sell or craft stuff
Step 3: help guildies do low level dungeons or build housing/cook food
Step 4: do naked dungeon runs to see how far we can get
Step 5: Laugh more
Step 6: build more stuff for the hell of it
Step 7: Log Off
I don't take any game seriously....Im in no competition with anyone...I just want to have fun the way I want...I payed to do that, right? My playstyle is very much so anti-pvp especially since I have a family and kids and my time is always dictated by that, so I get to have my fun less than before.
To me, it's not a job or a competition, I compete everyday in the real world and have 0 desire to do it in a game. I also work 50 hours a week and have no desire to continue working when I get home...I want to have fun...that's it...nothing more, nothing less.

1- because the hardcore server ruleset will foster and cater to much different PvP than the optin/optout PvP offered on the normal ruleset;
2- because the two gameplay styles, full PvE and optin/optout PvP, aren't mutually exclusive and can coexist without being detrimental to one another, giving a broader audience more choices on how they play every day on the same server;
I hope you see the irony....
Said Wow and others. There is a reason people love FPS matches, MOBA's, hell even card games. All the PvP oriented MMORPGS tend to have small populations compaired to other games. People like to compete not be beat like they are an infant fighting an adult.
But you speak as if you desires are all that matter when you blow off any other desires for the game. Make it seem as if they should just make the game for you.
This game more and more looks like Earthrise, but hopefully without all the suck.
It seems like the game is going to have both standard and PvP ruleset servers when it launches though. Is the petition really necessary?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Lol...
I might make a POLL to remove this evil PVE server.....
Joke ;D
Yeah, it all makes sense, Im just always wary when open world PVP is intertwined with PVE (as disconnected from the PVE part as it might be.) PVP'ers are a different breed than PVE'ers...our ideas of fun don't always mix well...they mix more like oil and water :P
Im glad to see you read the post you put up:
"You have a full compliment of resources and PvE tiers available in protected areas"
In other words, 2/3 of the world will be PVE and the other 1/3 will be open PVP.

where is the irony? when we are playing in a game there is really no way to bother someone else.
PVP'ers on the other hand are PVP'ers cuz they want to bother someone else.
There is no irony there....
