I finally logged into Archeage and...Oh my, the chat. Full of jokes about homosexuals and "your mother sucked my enchanted staff." I don't have much experience with FTP titles, is this what they're all like? Constant chatter by 12-year-olds? Ugh.

And you're...complaining about complaining about chat, my friend.
I don't know about you, but my communications with others through chat is one of the key features I look for in an MMO. If chat sucks, well...
Must be different on my server, Kyrios, but then, it's mostly patrons there. Pretty standard stuff really.
Now, their official forums... that's a whole different story. I know many are pissed about the queues (and rightly so) but the posts there are incredibly toxic and abusive.

I've got two characters - one Firran and one Hirani. I've logged in with them at different times of the day, and the Hirani chat is consistently offensive, whereas I find the Firran chat far more civil.

but general chat shouldnt make or break a mmo for you..theres many other ways of avoiding the spam and Xroads chatter if it dosent suit you
You're judging a chat channel based off of a few jack offs which exist in EVERY game. I'm sorry but if you're going to judge a game based on its chat, you're going to have a hard time enjoying ANY game. Only thing you can do if it offends you that much is black list the people that act stupid and ignore yourself. This game does have a black list feature. And you should be happy that you can play period since hundreds of other people are waiting in queue while you complain about chat.
Yeah I am in about the same boat as Mighty, I just do not have the desire to listen to a bunch individuals with immaturity issues running their mouths all day. Making new channels seems like the way to go.

I've played a lot of games with mature, kind communities. Lately, that's LOTRO and FFXIV. Is this where you tell me to go back to them?

and yes, this is the norm for both free to play and sub games these days. this all started back in wow with the frat boy raiding guilds, people thought it was funny/cool and started emulating it and now it seems to be the status quo. it's all good though, it's a pvp game. find the people spamming and kill them.
Why do you specifically target F2P people? The servers are full of both free amd patrons. At least in the two servers i play (Enla and Ezi) patrons with the same behavior and on top of that bitching, whining, and being racists about Brazilians.
So yeah.... you might want to generalize a bit more. Subscribers can be as immature as everyone else.
Pretty much yeah? There's just no point in complaining about something that is so easily managed. Block people on game, if that doesn't work, change channels or make new ones, if that doesn't work try a new server, if that doesn't work try a new game. But honestly blocking 1-2 clowns should be enough. It exists in every game, Archeage isn't special in regards to this. And Lotro/FFXIV aren't exempt from this either. All the servers FFXIV has, I doubt you played on them all, so you dont know how the chat is on every server. You could just be lucky to find one that doesn't have bad chat. But to judge a game on chat is just silly my friend.
Racism towards Brazilians has been in almost every F2P game that I've tried at some point in time. Blame people for being stupid, status has nothing to do with it.
Its a PvP focused game, of course its going to have horrible chat.

exactly, status has nothing to do with it. Ive also seen the same hate agains brazilians in all the subscription only mmos ive played. So yes, it is everywhere. But i commented because OP sepcifically targeted F2P people by asking if all F2P games are like that, when AA also has a sub.
Pretty sure blocking a few people will not work for him as most of the chat I've seen spread across several servers is like this. All you can really do is turn off the main chat channels and just chat with your guild which works but takes a lot of the potential social element out of the game. But people are right all highly populated MMOs lately seem to be like this these . I've been online for over 20 years now and it seems like the average person on the internet gets stupider and less amusing every year. I mean you still get people repeating the same Chuck Norris jokes they heard in 2004 and thinking they're hilarious and the trolls pretending to be racist/sexist in chat all day to make their 5 equally moronic buddies laugh.
It's just sad...
