Without stereotyping everyone, Ive noticed a lot of these "trolls" and whatnot share a lot common traits.
Imo too many kids grew up entitled and coddled, and now were dealing with the aftermath.
Interesting read, but the problem I'll always have with psychology is that it's souly focused on a collection of people rather than the individual....I have many of the traits described, but i'm also not an addict of any sort and I stay away from global chat in games like the plague....I also would never make my presence felt in a negative way...anywhere.
That will always be the downfall of psychology, but it's almost predetermined because of the nature of study psychology requires. It never takes into account the most important unit in the world...the individual.
Perhaps. I could honestly in one sentence nail down the mentality. "I dont give a shit about anything or anyone but myself, I come first."
There is a virtue in selfishness unlike any other...it must be attached to strong idealogy though. I'm very selfish, but I realize if I am not happy and I do not love myself, then who can I share my happiness or love with?

Absolutely, you dont seem like the kind of guy who derives pleasure from harassing people who are just trying to kick back, relax and play video games. I wonder at what point it not only became acceptable to be asinine, but became encouraged.
Originally posted by TiamatRoar Marvel Heroes chat is amazingly civil for some reason and its F2P. I dunno why but vulgarity and anything else "bad" is nigh nonexistant there. Completely. Maybe one reason/factor is because the game is probably one of the least competitive MMOs in existance or something.
I would also say that MH has a surprisingly friendly community. Maybe because the game is mainly focused on PvE ARPG style grinding. And with 30+ heroes right now all tied to a single master account and name, after a certain point, your account really becomes an investment and loss of it would be devastating.
Its really bizzare, there is virtually zero "OMG Wolverine is OP! nerf!" all critisism is fairly constructive.
Warframe also seemed to be fairly friendly. Both devs seemed to be at least respected by the community, if not liked. Very rare for f2p games.
I dont really remember Shadowbane having a real chat problem, but maybe thats because I was playing when it was sub, and it was a small buggy game regardless.
Im still waiting for the queues to die down before I give the game a real shot.
I finally logged into Archeage and...Oh my, the chat. Full of jokes about homosexuals and "your mother sucked my enchanted staff." I don't have much experience with FTP titles, is this what they're all like? Constant chatter by 12-year-olds? Ugh.
Go play WoW for a bit...it is P2P....The chat there is AWESOME....get in a guild as well and hop on their VENT servers...and enjoy the CLASS of the P2P crowd !!

not sure...I can only imagine they are so desperate for attention, while simultaneously being angry because they don't get any...once their wish is granted....their dream is destroyed.....an eternal cycle of anger and letdown all made possible by self-destruction :P
I read a few more essays and articles on Jung's theory and it's pretty cool

Makes sense lol. I also want to point out that, self expression with consequences were an integral part of growing up for me. I can admit that when I ran my smart ass mouth, often times someone put a fist into it lol. It will be interesting to see what happens developementally to this younger generation who didnt have those consequences for negative and socially unacceptable behavior.

Tho you have this kind of behaviour in P2P games too. It's far less of a problem than in F2P games. It's terrible there, as most of them are just freeloaders. So getting their account banned, only gives them "badass" status among their silly friends.
While in a P2P game, getting Your account banned has Direct Financial concequences. You lose the Box price you paid for the game, plus the amount of time you paid a Subscription for.
So in general, People (except the really stupid ones) tend to be more careful in what they say and do in P2P MMO's.

I agree 100%...its sad that people don't have to pay for stupid actions like we did back then...

totally agree...skin in the game is an automatic taming tool for tools :P

You can disable just about every aspect of chat. You can be 100% free of all the garbage chatter in an instant and still get all the important stuff. Just open up your chat window options and deselect that which you don't care to read. Note: Spammers are in every channel but party, raid, system, and alerts.
Also go into options and enable the appropriate invite spammers... guild, party, raid... saves getting popups every ten seconds.
Well, then wouldn't like most online games. Not talking about MMOs here. All online games have shit chat. You think that this is bad? Have you played Dota? There people will abuse for taking a breadth at the wrong millisecond. MMO chat is like a sophistacted intellectual conversation in comparison.
But I only read /party and /guild chat I ignore global chat.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

I think that's a great example of what I was talking about earlier. A game developed right, no matter it's subject matter or subscription model, creates a good community. MH is well done and it shows in the class of people it attracts. Of course it's a different type of game but the same rules apply.
Archeage is just terribly done. Having a lot of great features that make it a sandbox MMO do not make it a great game. I hope it shows other developers how many people are starved for sandbox MMOs though. It's just a great sub-genre when done right. The community would be significantly better if so many of the mechanics weren't total garbage and thrown together with the planning of a 5 year old making his own lunch. Some parts are good. Other parts are oreo cookies mixed with mustard and gravy.

It just depends on how and when it's implemented. I think some online games don't even have chat for this reason, and wisely lets players choose their own social environment over other mediums like teamspeak, or just play the game without socializing. There's no reason for the chat in some situations, and when you just add it without thinking about it, you get people that use it without thinking about what they say or why they are saying it.
For all the years I played it, LOTRO had the best chat, best community and best channels.
Advice channel was used for *gasp* advice. Most chat was limited to the zone you were in, trade channel was limited to cities, and the only real global channel was GLFF (global looking for fellowship), which was a player-made channel you had to join. Any trash talking or trolling happened in GLFF.
As I said before, you can't base a game solely on one server. Some servers have good chat, some don't. That applies to every single MMO that has multiple servers, period. It also comes down to the time of day, some creeps do have lives outside of trolling people 24/7, so during those phases it can be considered "good."
In regards to AA, I'm on Lucius NA and it's pretty uncivil for the most part with racism and such; however it does turn around some when the RMT utilize their name changing programs and blast most chats except 1-2. Then everyone goes to trade and just flames the rmt till they stop. Good or bad, at least they CAN be civil when something that does happen. And sadly TW doesn't have a night crew or something because the bots were going on and on for 4-5 hours straight.
Looking at the various posts here, there are some differences between back in the day... and now. The one that strikes me is the audience now verses 2003/4, the games have a much larger population now and the target audience is a lot younger, that could be one reason. I was wondering though, could it be the companies level of participation in the game itself? I'm not talking about customer support, I am talking about moderators and guides that used to hang out on servers and on various chat channels. (I will have to ask, I know a few of them from vanilla WoW)... I do remember Eq and WoW being fairly clean, you could use filters however, no filters could spare you Barrens chat.
In the end filters, ages and population aside, is the problem basically the lack of active human in game moderation in the various servers and channels?
My 2 cents. The chat is bad. The community on my server is bad. To dismiss it off as "it's a f2p game what do you expect" is not excuse for how people should conduct themselves. I have completely turned off ALL chat in game except vicinity and yell ( and that's about to be shut off too!) Why yell and vicinity you ask? Well I was on today and what appeared to be like 50 guild members just standing around spamming chat. ALL of them.
Not to mention all of the players I have come in contact with thus far seem to not care about sharing quest mobs. I will even send the invite for a group just to share and move on and it's ignored and the person runs out without even a glance. Granted there is like a 15 second respawn, but this DOES play in the overall community.
Overall the games ok, but the community makes the game not very enjoyable IMO. If the community levels out and is less toxic, more cooperative the game would be good, but as it is now it's just one big eye roll.

I'm afraid that as people start murdering each other more and more as the game goes on, things will just get less civil. I don't have any evidence for this, just a worry I have. It's kinda kept me out of the game. I know that I can turn off the various channels, but then I feel like I'm missing out on a big part of the MMO experience.

I feel you are absolutely right. I do feel I am missing out.
I went back to play EQ2 about 6 months ago just to revisit. The game has not aged well IMO, and runs very poorly on my newer system then it did when I first started playing. However the community was great. It was alive and full of good conversation. I went back to Rift soon after to revisit that. Game looked and played great, but the chat was near dead.
I tend to run solo except for events or quests that call for a group so I get my own "feel" for the game. I often run off and explore and do not want to waste others time with my exploring, however I do enjoy watching and responding to positive chat. Joining a guild might be an option, but sometimes you don't know what you are getting when you join one, and I hate guild hopping.

I don't even feel 1/2 the time murdering and ganking was a big point of contention in chat in the game.
In fact, most of it was about uprooting trees.
Rarely do I see a pvp on trial that has long sentences. It is the uprooting trees guys that do, lol.
The user and all related content has been deleted.
Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.

Yeah, I found it obnoxious that there are 3 global chats. I turned them off day 1 of pre-release.
Agreed turn off the global channels ,,,join a guild and never worry again . On a sad note AA's chat still isn't as bad as the Open Beta's chat in ESO was .....that was the all time killer for me
