and i quote "check out some of the MMORPG genre's winter holiday events and promotions, conveniently rounded up for you in our guide below. The list isn't exhaustive, so feel free to chime in with any we've missed that you love."

And what is included in the list? and i quote

"Destiny: "Be on the lookout for some small stocking stuffers sometime after the Holidays have come and gone."

"League of Legends: Snowdown brings sales and skins and new game modes to the biggest online game in the world."

"World of Tanks: Global maps on are ceasefire through the holidays!"

"World of Warplanes: A snowball mode has joined the game for the holiday season"

I bet they think MOBA and instanced pvp games are MMOs too.

Oh look.. another one of these ignorant threads.

There is no broadening of the term "MMO" there is only your ignorance and lack of understanding of how gaming genres are structured.

MMO is not even a genre but describes the type of game based on the number of players.

There's SPs (Single-Player games), MPs (Multi-Player games), and MMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online)

League of Legends, WoT, Destiny, Dota2, and so forth are ALL MMOs. They are not however MMORPGs which is in fact a gaming genre. Think of it like a family. MMO is the family. Everything else is part of it: MMORPG, MOBA, MMORTS, MMOFPS, MMOARPG, etc.

MMO =/= MMORPG but includes it.

Please kindly contact massively.com and correct their mistakes. They are the ones who are broadening the term MMO.

BTW, if they are now calling lobby online games MMOs, isn't that the definition of what "broadening" means?

It is not 100% up to me .... given the popularity and the number of responses here, it will be around for a while.

They must have forgotten the first M for Massively on MMOBA. That or 5 vs 5 is not massive in the least and MOBAs are not MMOs.

Yes, they are ignoring the first M .. but so what? If enough people are doing it, it becomes the norm.

You obviously disagree with massively, mmorpg.com, superdata, newszoo, and other places who classifies MOBAs as MMOs. But why should anyone listen to a random person on the internet, as opposed to multiple big websites in the industry?

All I have to do is make an argument for common sense instead of common usage.

That first M in MMO is the defining central point. Just ignore Massively, so what? That makes no sense at all, it's just a multiplayer online game then. All these sites are doing is using the acronym incorrectly for marketing. To try and include more to get more hits and make more money.

Common sense will dictate to anyone that Hearthstone a 1 vs 1 digital trading card game is not a MMO. Yet superdata listed it in top ten MMO revenue for 2014. MMORPG.com lists single player games like Dragon Age so it has zero credibility and gets called on it all the time with "not a MMO" threads.

It's not just me one guy on the internet, it's anyone with common sense able to determine that 1v1, 5v5 or even your World of Tanks with it's 15 v 15 matches doesn't qualify as a MMO.

Words have meanings and this is not just semantics. Not that I have any hope of any of this rubbing off since these sites don't care about accuracy, common sense, or definitions honestly you have to feel bad for them since they seem to be struggling to the point of calling anything a MMO to stay afloat and people just go with them and defend the misuse by declaring common usage.

Seriously just understand that MMO means Massively Multiplayer Online. Hearthstone is a 1v1 match based game, MOBAs are 5v5 match based games.

    Apply common sense.

Yes, you can but so what? Common usage is common by definition.

Can you convince massively.com with your "common sense" argument? Having an argument does not mean that you change how people use the term.

Your right when faced with this amount of stupidity it really doesn't matter what I say.

I am glad you realize the futility of calling a large group of other netizens "stupid".

MMO...an acronym of 3 adjectives that people of a certain mindset think is a noun and embark on vague dialogue to purposely be able to move the goal posts when someone tries to figure out what they are actually saying.

Currently used by marketing to try and push every game into every genre to get the most exposure/dollars.

Why call it a large group when it could be massive! I mean we are talking about 4-5 sites on the internet that's a pretty massively massive number.

hmm .... massively.com is not a MMO dev or publisher, is it?

I suppose you can argue that they are broadening the term MMO to broaden their appeal to gamers, and hence it is marketing related.
