One thing we know for sure about the game. The credit card feature works like a charm.
I have this picture of the game design on a white board in my mind.
A circle with dollar signs in it. Surrounded by other circles called features with arrows pointing to the big circle in the middle with dollar signs.
your favourite publisher´s shareholders must be really scared of such a successful crowdfunding campaign and others inevitably following in Chris Roberts steps?
Sorry, no more profits for the grey suits behind desks jiggling publisher shares at Wall Street, building swimming pools with microtransaction money.
What if others follow? Then it´s game over for their profitable vampire business. I know, it hurts. But all good things must end.
+1....Oh the pain must be so excruciating....it's so obvious by the amount of way too much hate for SC. Some but not all, must be suits out of business i reckon...with lots of time as well:P
Star Citizen is one of the last hopes of the Space Genre to be revived, embrace the future, don't fight it anylonger, it gazes upon you, and you still measure fun with money...SC Backers and speaking just for myself, did it, just for keeps, just to be able to see finally a game made by gamers FOR Gamers, and not in a spreadsheet dark and expensive hotel with bozo suits that never played Wing Commander or X Wing vs Tie, or the old Elite.
This generation wanted a top notch Space Game, and is going to get it, whether anyone likes it or not!
Well i played CR games long before the Bioware guys played on their garage.
The quote is just there to tease the trolls and naysayers, and of cource every backer although thinking highly of CIG, will always be critical and pointing out the wrongdoings way earlier than any troll or maggot or worm will, and surely not on this forum.
But since action causes reaction, any view will and can be countered with another, all the time round the clock, and until release.
After the first month, we will finally be able to play SC, in peace:P Another game will take it's place, on the hype-troll train, and life goes on on the MMORPG forums, and everywhere else.
Even if the SC Crowdfunding somewhat resembles a crusade against suits and big corps with earnings to think of only out of games, know this:
Every mega gaming corp that would like to make tons of money, would ask one man to make their next space game opera, and that would be Chris Roberts...and be sure, they already did, but backers still fund the project.
Whenever CR may need a great company to shield his baby, most, if not all, will be there to back Star Citizen more wholeheartedly, than most posters, questioning SC, think.
I am afraid i am too old for this, since Grandmasters of gaming are so rare these days. It's remarkable that supposedly gamers that lurk on such forums, are not aware, what behemoth gaming companies are fully aware...of who is Chris Roberts!

I lied I will make one more comment.
That post is true but for the most part "hate' is generally reserved for actual games not concepts. Only twice have I seen people complain about non entities. YThis game and when Pantheon was announced and everyone came out (rightfully so) bashing the shit out of McQuaid.
Star citizen isnt to that level yet but the more four figure ship they run out (will they have the balls to list one for 10K +? , I think the will eventually) the more people are going to circle the wagons of "this has to be a scam at this point'.
So while peopel love to trash MMOs this thing isnt even to that stage yet, its still in the 'we want money' phase. Once they deliver something (surely not 70 or whatever millions of dollars worth they raise) then the REAL ashing will being. They will release something they pretty much have to, or they could go to Canada I suppose. But whatever it is it will be trashed.

No, the point of the previous post is to say that there is nothing you can point to, say or reference that hasn't been seen a dozen times before. And every time, what was actually released ranged anywhere from complete crap to a few that actually turned out to be a decent game. At best, a decent game, but most weren't. Bioware was known for making high quality RPGs. If there was ever an equation for success, SWTOR was it. They had it all, A developer who "knew what they were doing" A built in customer base from a well known IP. A "proven" game format. The game that released didn't exactly work out that way. Chris Robert's long time history means Squat. I'm much more concerned with his current history.
No game I have ever seen released has met the hype level. Not even close. No where near what was expected. In fact, I can say with certainty that when SC finally does release some time after 2016 if not later, there is going to be a crying out and a trail of tears and "How could Chris Roberts do this to us?" Why can I say this. Because there have been no exceptions in this genre.

Buzz Aldrin's actions both as a astronaut and what he did with that fame he earned afterwards speak for themselves.
What does Chris Robert's actions endlessly finding new ways to increase his funding and pushing the release date of the game out ever farther and farther to add new features as long as the money keeps rolling in say about the man? Maybe I'm wrong and maybe Chris Robert's is just caught up in the moment of having near endless resources to build the game he always wanted to build but if that's the case than rather than being deliberately greedy he has given up all control over his project to rabid fanboys. Neither scenario is particularly appealing to me.
As a personal opinion ... i think you misjudge the man Chris Roberts.
I cannot convince you with words alone, so I suggest to you that you try to meet the man in person. Then let me know what you think.
Have fun
PS:
If you have the chance ... meet Buzz Aldrin too. WELL WORTH IT ;-) ! Look on Facebook on where to meet him.
As a personal opinion.....I think you misjudge the man Chris Roberts. I suspect it is due to his Hollywood PR skills as well as his great big ego.
In the last year I have talked to ten people who worked with Roberts at Origin, and they have nothing good to say about him. He's the second least liked person from Origin. As someone who worked closely with Roberts put it, 'He believes everything he says, no matter what its relationship to reality'.
He's just transitioned from a failed Hollywood career, where his last project has been in limbo since 2009 (and the production company went bankrupt, with a fine run of litigation in there as well).
And while your posts are pretty unflaggingly polite and well written, your reliance on 'Chris Roberts sez' is a foundation of sand.
As far as the 'Credit Card Crisis' goes, I have little issue with people who support a project getting something for their support. If they get a little edge, no problem here. The wisdom of exactly where you place your money, in this instance, that I can question.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Sorry but blaming a company for what they charge is absurd, there is 100% ironclad way for this to have no effect on someone.....self control, i can't wait till this game comes out but i have spent less 100 bucks because paying real money for a virtual items is nuts, when you can earn it for free in a couple of years. What we have now are modules so they can do literally years of testing with fan feed back on combat, rather than the game being 80% done before anyone outside of the dev team tests it.
The stats on literally ever item people you can buy are going to change many times over so what your paying for is what it will be at launch not what its stats are right now. The real issue with this game is ....drum roll... is it going to be any good when it launches, if i spent thousands of dollars on ships which are subject to change ......and the majority of the features of the game are not even playable right now and i am disappointed with the game at launch.....its 100% my fault. I didn't have buy any ships to play the game at launch and its all speculation until then anyway.
Its frankly funny to me how many people complain about the amount of funds that have been raised by this game, but those same people have no complaints about a game that spends 5 times that much, and has no fan input on development until open beta.
Being effective now in module means absolutely nothing if someone is worried about being competitive right now they don't get it and frankly they are doing a test drive and they are not a tester in the first place. There is no balance in alpha products nor should people expect it, no one is making anyone play right now or buy anything right now, how someone else spends there money is only that persons business in the first place

Okay, honestly: Roberts is a definite advantage on the front side; he handles PR well, hyping excitement, keeping things rolling, doing videos, pressing the flesh, etc. On the production side, I consider him a drag on the development. A bit of a micromanager, his organization is not fun to work for, he's given to grandiose and sometimes unrealistic visions, etc.
Still, as always, it will be the strength of the team he has working for him that will make or break the game. So I consider it possible that they will succeed. Just expect it to take lots longer than they say, and don't expect it to have everything they've said it will have.
The game, on paper, sounds great! Of course, many games sound great on paper.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
I want to know what the money goes to. We have heard crazy numbers thrown out for games in the past. 40 Million (10 years ago) for WoW 200 million for ESO, Lotro 50-75 mil, Swotor 100mil.
Those triple digit ones were all voiced over and had a huge budget just for that, so that should put most of that in context for people.
Most every game that has been made up until ESO (and we dont know for sure it actually did cost 200 million total budget) was 100 million or less.
So why do people have this idea it costs all that much? I would say advertising and other 'useless' perks make up 40% of the budget.
So a full on DEVELOPMENTAL budget of 50 million SHOULD make a pretty decent if not very good game. At least all the generic MMO stuff one would expect, quests, landscape (game world), NPCs, mobs, mounts, aromors, and probably even a halfway decent housing and RP system of some sort (fishing, music).
Is always funny seeing these big numbers thrown around like theyre gospel and theyre justified.
When this game started out they would have done cartwheels for 30 million and claimed they could make the best game ever for that. Now two years later theyre goal is 4 times that amount? They have 2.5 times that amount and having nothing to show but some fancy Jpegs and a flght simulator you could make for a couple hundred grand.
When youre making a game without investors and on other peoples money with simple word of mouth advertising the price tag should drop precipitously. But this game for some reason keeps going up and up and up.
Now we assume they havent spent all the money, but what are they doing with what they have? Thats a bigger question because no one anywhere can claim that after two years and all the money they have raised they havent produced shit and certainly nothing remotely resembling an MMO.
Very well put on both points.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
The only companies that make all their financial information public are charities because they have to, CIG or any other gaming company would have to be crazy to tell everyone how they are spending the money so for anyone skeptical about how the money is being spend fine don't buy any ships. It doesn't take 2 years to make a AAA game also, we are hearing about them a lot later in their development a lot easier to keep hype up for 2 years vs. 5.
That is also a development cycle that doesn't have much input from the public on how it gets made.

And let's be honest here, anyone who is spouting off that Star Citizen is a scam and that they want to see the books, would just claim the books are a lie if they ever did see them. That's the problem with conspiracy theorists. They don't let facts get in the way of their nutjob rantings.

Its amazing how much some people rant and wail with next to nothing in facts behind it. And they do not even take a few minutes of time to google the minimum information necessary to participate in a meaningful way.
@Arglebargle .... i agree that Chris Roberts is working his team hard and not everyone may have liked that in the past, especially when there was not enough time and money. This time he has both. In all the many posts and videos and JumpPoint articles I have seen, one thing became apparent .... at CIG Chris Roberts is the ONE filter that ensures that a unified picture forms out of many diverse parts. Yes, this could seem like micromanaging, as almost everything at one time has to go through CR and be approved. Often more than once. But if they NOT do it like that, those people that say that different studios and different modules won't work together once they are combined, may well be correct. Furthermore CR has hired some talented people, especially in the producer position. Anything that slips by CR, they can handle on their own when the boss is doing the inevitable PR tours. It is also interesting to see how a game is produced basically 24/7 over different continents, time-zones and teams. So yes, there is of course the chance that my first impression from CR was wrong .... however, everything i see and read from people working on the project for the last two years (and that is plenty) hints at my impression being correct. And yes, we DO expect it to take longer and we DO expect that not everything will be ready at launch. But THIS time ... its ok. Most of the backers say time and time again: take as much time as needed to make it the best space sim ever.
@Tuchaka ... some excellent points you made in your post. Especially about people expecting EVERYTHING promised to be there and balanced and fully polished in a pre-Alpha (!) build.
@GeezerGamer .... will there be wailing and teeth-gnashing at launch ? Sure there will be. With 705.000 backers it will NEVER be possible that the game turns out 100% perfect for 100 % of the backers. Because there are 705.000 DIFFERENT opinions what this game should be. And many of them are mutually exclusive. Will that make SC a bad game. IMHO no. But your statement "there are no exceptions" will be confirmed ... tears and wailing will commence, because its human nature.
@TyrianPrime .... 10 years ago there was plenty of wailing and teeth-gnashing around WoW. And yes, it is a good game despite that wailing and rivers of tears. So in that case I have to agree with GeezerGamer w.r.t. "no exceptions", but i follow your reasoning that this does not rule out that such a game "still" can become a huge success :-)
Broooklyn .... lets not forget that you can bribe the dev team also with cookies, cigars, spirits and other goodies. Plenty of pictures of those from 2013 ;-) So its NOt ONLY a credit card game.

I guess the difference in our outlooks is that you are betting on Chris Roberts being different from everything else that's come out recently, where as, I'm betting on Chris Roberts being more of the same . Nothing more. Nothing less.

That is quite correct.
And that being different in my case mostly refers to the combination of various parts into a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. The various parts may be comparable to some other things coming out in 2015 and 2016, but combining them will be something unique in Star Citizen.

You are new at this?
Oh!!!
Did you ever watch and play any other game where Clive Owen, or Malcom Mc Dowell acted, and you ask me if i am new to this?

I will agree as well. They must slow down a bit, and they know it, CR has more surprises to please us though:P

Your sig tells a great truth btw:P
I will keep my expectations lower and lower as development goes on, but i feel so excited when the game is bashed, i get the urge to throw another....
IN CHRIS ROBERTS WE TRUST
I guess you get me now:P

WoW wasn't the exception that overcame and blasted skyhigh all hype before release and turned out to be a smashing release and MMORPG of the Decade?

Oh, I was all prepared to mention the initial WC design meeting where Roberts' grand plan consisted of 'Let's make a game like those Lucasarts WWII flight games, except in space', and mention the abject theft of Niven's Kzinti for the Kilrathi, and a few other bits..... but then I realized what you've done here!
What a brilliant parody of the adoring masses of the Cult of Roberts, all just hanging on his every Word, waiting for the manna to descend to them through their righteous wallets! I have to hand it to you, it's one of the best I have seen, such uncritical hero worshipping hosannas. Well done! Well done indeed.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
This could end up being very interesting.
I rest my case, i wish for though, that it does end moderately well, because from the mediocrities of this decade, i stopped playing MMOs and turned to MOBAs instead. I wish SC, brings back the old feeling of getting together with friends and travel the 'verse. Not as spreadsheety like EVE, and unforgiving, something more spectacular, with twists and flare. At least this, do you think he can't deliver?
At least a privateer like, or like the old wing comnder feeling if approached i will be more than happy.
Do you think he can deliver again? It's a pretty sincere question, answer from your bottomheart please, thx

The first paragraph you talk about the "mediocrities of this decade".
Then you ask the question..."At least this, do you think he can't deliver?"
Then you respond with "At least a privateer like, or like the old wing comnder feeling if approached i will be more than happy."
Basically saying if he doesn't deliver what he promised you will accept something less. Talk about accepting mediocrity.
Don't play with words, this is not a lawyer's discussion.
You are not aware either if i am twisting my words in a way to get a true answer from the one i was asking for a reply.
Talk about weather in SC i would advise you. Less complicated:P
And to answer to you directly Privateer and Wing Commander were TOP CLASS Games, accepted by most people that played them instead of any other game in their time. Are you so new to this too?
Unless CR announces that Clive Owen or Malcom Mc Dowell will act in SC let's say the Squadron 42? Or do they don't ring a bell either, and you consider their role in CR's games, a talk about mediocrity? I hope you were not serious, and read some more about those game sand the impact they made:P

Very well put on both points.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
And you know this how? Because one alcoholic concept artist who doesn't know how to function in an actual business told you so?
Tell me then, why did all these guys from other companies jump ship at their cooshy jobs at Blizzard and Crytek to come work for CIG?
The only companies that make all their financial information public are charities because they have to, CIG or any other gaming company would have to be crazy to tell everyone how they are spending the money so for anyone skeptical about how the money is being spend fine don't buy any ships. It doesn't take 2 years to make a AAA game also, we are hearing about them a lot later in their development a lot easier to keep hype up for 2 years vs. 5.

@Arglebargle ... w.r.t. to the "cult" thing you mentioned. This has been mentioned for the last two years and it has not become any more noteworthy since then. And game journalists asked this question too. There are official answers to that e.g. http://www.tentonhammer.com/features/interviews/chris-roberts-responds-to-cult-of-star-citizen
