[Column] Elder Scrolls Online: The Reason I Canceled My Subscription

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Yes, you’re reading that right, I canceled my ESO subscription last week. The Elder Scrolls Online is a great game and anyone who is thinking of purchasing it for the consoles when it releases on June 9th I would still recommend them to do so. There is no denying that ESO is easily worth its initial investment but I can’t say with confidence that it’s worth the continuous investment.

    Its happening, isn't it..

Glad I abandoned that ship early.

I really don't see the point to pay a subscription fee for ESO atm.

I just restarted 2 weeks ago. I am playing it casually only being level 17 now on my new character and mostly doing AvA and some questing/crafting as needed. I really don't care about leveling 10% faster. I enjoy the ride and am not in a hurry to reach max level.

There really isn't anything in the store which I must have.

But I really don't complain. I like it this way. No clue though how Zenimax wants to earn some money from me. In case they add more DLC to be bought via cash shop I might subscribe eventually. But that content then must be worth 15$ / month and it might take a long time till I reach max level or that new content. ;)

No. Not happening. The Author is guilty of joining the entitlement immediate gratification crowd in my opinion. ESO has been clear about the massive content currently being created and they have been clear on when more details will be released.

i don't personally expect them to change their marketing of this new content from their proposed dates of information release as it makes perfect sense to do it in a way that also entices console players to look forward to it. As console release is only a matter of days away, I'm patient enough to let them complete the console release and look forward to then hearing all the info on Imperial city, Clockwork, Orsiniam, theives guild, dark brotherhood, etc.

Man you even mention DLC access. How do you write a story about an MMO and not mention that they plan on charging for content patches? Connect the dots.

Why I canceled my ESO subscription: after playing for almost two weeks, I realized I wasn't really enjoying it.
  • BrenicsBrenics Member RarePosts: 1,939
You hit it right on the head of the nail. Great write up and I agree 100% with you. Funny looks like we both canceled in the same month for exactly the same reasons.

Imagine if you were a hardcore pvp player and how you would feel... All of that comes into play plus the fact we now suffer from a twice nerfed population cap in campaigns, 50x the lag that we had at launch, rampant cheating/use of macro's, countless balancing issues that take forever to be addressed, the best armor sets only available by pve, much slower leveling, much slower champion point xp earning, content removed since launch (camps), and no new content since launch.

I haven't touched ESO in over 2 weeks thanks to The Witcher 3. l've only taken 2 other breaks from ESO before, but this appears to be a permanent break. I'd enjoy replaying The Witcher 3 on Death March and possibly playing 1&2 while reading the novels more than I'd ever returning to ESO.

"I know this article seems like I’m whining like a toddler because I’m not getting enough attention"

Sorry but this is exactly what I thought after the first couple paragraphs and still my feeling after reading the whole thing.

p.s. Let me add before anyone jumps me that there are some valid points in your piece.

I'm stunned the OP took this long to quit.  I'm a pc player who loves to craft. My focus WAS AvA. Frankly as a PC player  ...I feel duped. I feel the first year of the game was just beta for  the console launch. AvA remains a joke. Op the reason BRIAN WHEELER isn't showing his face is the heat he takes for zero AvA feature development. The light is starting to come on for even the most obtuse players who want AvA to be as promised...or at last function properly.

My guess is you will see IMPERIAL CITY as a paid DLC early next year as the next money grab.

    agree with this.

I log into feed my horse to gain speed and log right off.  iam waiting for new solo content.

hoping that after the console release they will re-focus back on NEW content.

on a side note= they really arent taking full advantage of their shop- Rift does a better job updating their shop weekly.

So let me get this straight, I have to pay $59.99 for the game and I have to pay subscription on top of that?

want 7 free days of playing? Try this

This article doesn't deserve a column piece.  There really is no incentive to sub to ESO right now.  They just switched to a B2P model and it's pretty common knowledge that the sub won't be worth it until (possibly) some DLCs come out, but even then it might not be (as the DLC purchases might be less).

So, not quite sure what the revelation is here when this has been discussed many times in the forums.

No, ESO is Buy-To-Play. You pay once and that is it, you only pay a monthly subscription if you want bonus stuff such as Crowns, 10% XP bonus, etc. You can play 100% free after you buy it.

Does an actual economy in game exist yet? Or is it still guildies posting ass tons of worthless crap in guild shops where there is no way to global search?

    If not, I'm still lol'ing.

That's what I was thinking. To me this is yet another whining post by another 1%er who supports terrible economic models like the one found in GW2 but subscribes to games like ESO or Rift and then complains because the subscription model won't support the game like other models out there. There's a reason for that, he might need to stop looking at his computer and take a look around him to see just how many people are jobless at the moment which is why games are going B2P and F2P in the first place.

And as for the console converison. Let me just say this. I converted from PC to Console because people like the OP who constantly wanted harder content and who advocated for terrible DLC and economic practices (like the ones found in NWO and GW2) because the 1% in PC community is sending the wrong message to the PC MMO developers out there and it's time to move on. Gone are the days when you played a game you simply must have everything either bought in the store, in the AH with real money, or by currency conversion with real money. It's sickening.

So when people like him post these things I have to post reminding everyone of just what happened to the PC market and why and which community is directly responsible.

What he is not telling you is any new content called DLC's in this game will need to be purchased with crowns or you can RENT it by paying a sub. The game will not be free. So far after over a year we still have major bugs that effect game play and ZoS has put PC/MAC on hold for over a year all for consoles. Oh didn't get me going on lag.

Zenimax not only ignored PC gamers, but they completely disregarded PVPers as well. As a former DAoC player and considering many devs were from Mythic, this is especially insulting. Not to mention their crappy forums and release headaches, the rampent duping and botting...

I am done with Zenimax for good. They simply don't understand how to run an MMO.

Good thing you don't need a sub... That being said 1500 crowns per month is pretty awesome. Thaaat being said, no new content since march OP stance is understandable.

All this bitterness and I'm over here playing ESO and having a great time. <Shrug>

Sorry you are having a bad time in ESO, best of luck to you.

    Understandable, but hardly column-worthy.

Will we see a similar column piece after Wildstar goes F2P?

LOL I have 5800 crowns and believe me there is nothing I really want from crown store.

While I do agree with some of the OP's points, I'm also wondering why MMORPG.com thought it was column worthy; are they a bit content short this week?

I'm an ESO noob that started about a month and a half ago.  I'm still working my way through the leveling content, so I pay the "Sub", which at this point is just some small bonuses in exchange to agreeing to buy 1500 crowns every month.  So for me, it makes sense.

But to a vet that might have all the stuff they want from the crown store, and no serious need for +10% XP?  Probably not.  I wouldn't, in their shoes.  Why not just wait until they put out DLC, then subscribe for the free access?

I can understand the frustration of the launch day crowd in the recent lack of serious updates and the push for the other platforms.  But I suspect it's necessary to get the game the revenue it needs to create new content for years to come.  And if I were a vet, I'd do the same as the OP; cancel the sub, keep training riding, and wait for the content I'm looking for.

Hands down the 2nd worst idea in the game, the first being having to spend the your first 2 million gold on storage or be muling constantly.
