I'd have played Star Marine I think, for a while at least depending how good it was. It's a pity it never made it into the game.
You played Star Marine ? Then you must be a CIG or Illfonic playtester ;-)
May I assume that you played the Star Citizen Alpha FPS game around the planet Crusader in the Stanton system ? Which was and is open to the backers for playtesting. Which still IS in the Alpha version of the game and incorporates more and more elements from Star Marine, although its not (yet) using the "Gold Horizon" station map (which was used to showcase the Illfonic version of Star Marine) or not (yet) using the "SATA-Ball Sports arena" map.
Currently, most of the FPS combat is occuring around Security Post Kareah in Stanton. Which is not quite the same as the older Gold Horizon station (less derelict than these old stations).
I'd have played Star Marine I think, for a while at least depending how good it was. It's a pity it never made it into the game.
Didn't make it into the game? Then how am I FPSing my way around stations every night, and doing bounty missions?!?
Do you know the difference between Arena Commander, Star Marine and the Persistent Universe? Well Star Marine is just a piece of the game for players to test equipment or have private battles with friends or guild mates. It's where you can go to shoot'em up without losing anything.
"Star Marine" is a sim pod training environment for people to train FPS combat in Star Citizen without permanently dying.
If you die too often in the Persistent Universe Star Citizen multiplayer (guestimate : 6-8 times) you face permadeath (read the "Death of a spaceman" permadeath article). That holds true for space combat AND FPS ground combat.
"Arena Commander" exists in Star Citzen for years now, as a sim pod training environment for space combat. It is a game in the game, as "Star Marine" will be. In these simpod training sub-games you can die and respawn as often as you want, without the permadeath mechanic kicking in.
When you feel comfortable in these simulated combat situations (space and soon ground) you are ready to head out in the "real (game) universe" were your actions have more (and more severe) consequences.
Fuck up in the simpod and you respawn. Fuck up in the Persistent Universe and you may wake up with a new bionic replacement eye or limb. Fuck up too often there and you will soon look like a cyborg ... or die. Time to hand over to your heir (the next character you generate).

It's just a side dish.
Sounds like you don't know what Star Marine was, they had plans for a Gold Horizon FPS map with two teams and the battledome from Ender's Game for a sports FPS thing, they spent months giving weekly progress reports on it but in the end couldn't get it working.
There are videos out there of the two maps they couldn't use, good job they raised so much money, got to expect some waste I expect, no idea how much all that work cost that they can't use.

You DO understand that they can use these two maps if they want, do you not ? Both Gold Horizon and the SATABall arena. No one will stop CIG from reusing those locations.
But first the basic FPS mechanics have to be working and THAT is what they are doing right now in Star Citizen Alpha.
The work done by Illfonic was a first step. Then CIG took over for the next iteration. And the next. And the one after that. Until it works.

It's like you guys are months behind.
None of that has gone away, the FPS is working and still being worked on. The sports thing was pushed back for more important development, but the maps and everything else is all still there, when they're ready go go back to work on it.
When I was still in Architecture, we couldn't work on the whole project at the same time, there were elements that had to be worked out far in advance before any other work could be done.

If history is any judge, you folks will have many more years of 'playing that alpha'. Until the glorious release of the Best Damn Minimum Viable Spacegame Product Eveh!
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Milli Vanilli were 'established successes' up until they got caught lip syncing. (Sorry, quote function is in defunction here, at present)
Those of you who have never run into people whose resumes are far beyond their actual abilities must be living charmed lives indeed.
The A list producers at Origin were all airy headed, sorta blue sky thinkers, who were not actually very good at game development and management. Roberts is actually probably a better manager than Garriott, but I can still find folks from Origin who like Garriott, despite the year long crunches that some of the Ultima games required.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
"Oh, let me guess - you've seen him be nasty at parties with all those friends of yours that know him intimately, right? " (Auto-Quotes still not working)
While you are free to discount it (it is the internet after all), the friends worked with him on most of those projects he brags about. Roberts talk is far greater than his contributions to those games. Feel free to show me a game he delivered where he wasn't safely in the arms of Origin or EA.
On DSmart, I don't know anything about him other than little historical bits, and how he's conducted himself here. Be assured though, neither he nor Chris would be invited into our local gaming circles.

Yes, that's my point - you don't know anything about the people you're saying seem to have very similar personalities.
I discount all claims of personal knowledge with zero detail, sources or underpinning for this project. It's very clear to me that there's a significant amount of people just looking to burn it down for their own personal amusement.
As such, there's no way I'm just going to trust some random stranger's interpretation of what his "friends" have said.
I have co-workers too, and believe me - they're not entirely reliable when it comes to their opinion of management.
Again, all we have is what we hear and see in public - and based on that alone, CR and DS are completely and utterly different.

Milli Vanilli? Really? Are you saying that's the norm or what?
Are you now also claiming that Garriott wasn't really responsible for the Ultima series? The most iconic RPG series in existence, more or less.
As if you had anywhere near the authority to outright dismiss the abilities of ALL A list producers at Origin.
I've never heard a more ridiculous claim based on nothing at all.
The more you talk, the more it seems you simply have a big problem with people who're successful.
If history is any judge, you folks will have many more years of 'playing that alpha'. Until the glorious release of the Best Damn Minimum Viable Spacegame Product Eveh!
You mean the history of developing one of the most ambitious games of all time?
Sure, it could take a few more years.
I guess we could go back in time to 2 years before StarCraft 2 or Team Fortress 2 were released and say the same thing - as "history" would have shown us it takes time to develop great games. Those games were in development for 7 and 9 years, respectively.
The difference to keep in mind here, is that you don't get to see early alpha versions of the average AAA game.
If you did, you might understand that serious issues are the norm - and to be expected - at this stage of development.
When CIG says the game is in late beta or nearly finished, THEN you have a reason to worry if the issues remain.
Imagine living the life of an unseen stowaway on a player run Bengal carrier or even an Idris destroyer after launch day, scavenging for the things you need and playing tricks on the crew. You have to slip on board somewhere during their port visits - maybe even go in by EVA.
Or you can go for the full "Event Horizon" treatment and murder the crew one by one.
