How much would you pay for the Oculus Rift?

The Oculus Rift is going to be available on pre-order in less than 48 hours. What is your maximum you would pay for one?

I have been reading up on the costs of getting a vr headset. Low end sets might be around 100 or so and that's loooooowwww end, and the high end are likely going to be 500 to 800. That doesn't even take into account how much you may spend upgrading your pc to be able to effortlessly go to another world. So, just wondering what if anyone had put back for 2016 to get there VR on. Also, any thoughts or facts on the subject are more than welcome. :)

None I tried it out at bestbuy sure it was neat but not something I would spend money on.

My PC will handle VR without raising a sweat, but I'll first have to see which of my favorite games actually support it.

More than likely, I'll wait until 2017 when the tech should have matured some. I'd happily spend $1000 on a good VR set if I can play really good games on it. I certainly wouldn't buy it just for the sake of having it.

You must not have tried out any of the "designed for vr stuff." When it is done correctly its breath taking. I haven't been excited for a new gaming technology like this one in as long as i can remember. (i did test some things with the dk2 toolkit, and it did need some hardware improvements, but man even with that under powered device, some of the things I experienced on there were amazing. Mind blowing even.

Zero. I don't see VR as anything, but just another gimmick, that will pass with time. I have no interest in slapping on a head piece or glasses to play a game.

    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

Absolutely nothing, I have no interest at all in VR. I don't know about all the stuff that goes along with it (pretty sure I read it is bad for your eyes, feel free to correct me if wrong), but I have very bad eyesight as it is. I don't need something speeding along my blindness.

Regardless of that, even if that wasn't an issue, I'm quite content just playing my games with my monitor/TV and PC/console.
The release models are supposed to be much easier for a gamer with glasses to use, and with the higher quality screens going into them, I would at least suggest you try out one. I have not heard that they really are bad for the eyes, as long as the display is good enough that you don't have to strain to focus on anything. The dk2 was a bit low res so I could see that being the case with last gen test models. Retail versions are supposed to be much better and the refresh rates are going to be much higher so less eye strain. :)

I'm sort of in the "wait and see" camp on VR. I'm not sure it will really be the next big thing or if it will just be an expensive gimmick that won't really work all that well or be widely accepted. If not very many people buy into it, then developers won't make it a priority. Either way I don't see 2016 being a huge break out year for VR just yet, but it's certainly something to watch in the next few years.

As long as I have to have a screen attached a couple of inches from my face - never.

    Now this - sure:

I agree 100%. I've tried a bit of VR and I get motion sickness from it and a massive headache pretty rapidly. I have pretty much zero intention of ever getting into VR. Unless of course I can just jack into the matrix.

I don't see VR becoming super mainstream any time soon, if ever. While it's a neat concept, I don't feel current technology supports it the way it needs to be. Interfacing systems are still pretty archaic all things considered. Wearing a VR headset while controlling via controller, keyboard/mouse just doesn't really do the whole VR thing justice.

5-10 years from now VR might be more mainstream, it will be interesting to see how the tech evolves. Although, I still feel that VR could do wonders for education, training, research, etc.

Zero, even if it comes out it is far too early to jump in.  Need to wait to see if it has the same staying power as those 3D TV's that were the rage just a short time ago.

There are currently sub-optimal products on the market and they are already approaching that $1000 price tag.   I think by the time a product that consumers will embrace hits the market it will be at a much higher price.

Absolutely nothing.  I have to wear glasses and take them off whenever I can get away with it.  Given the option, I'd rather be blind as bat than wear glasses.  VR glasses?  LOL, might as well ask me to stick my head in a toilet and say this it fun.

    Never gonna happen.

And there are more folks than not who feel the same way.

Mark my words... within 3 years of it's release no one will give a rats ass about VR because once you've been there, you've done that.  Gimmicks never last.

We are years away from VR being a thing. So right now I won't pay a penny.

Not even remotely interested in VR.

Between my triple monitor setup and TrackIR, I always feel adequately immersed in any title that I'm playing whether iRacing or Witcher 3.

@Pepeq I don't think its a gimmic. When head sets are half the size, they have worked out a UI that's fun and easy to use and have no need for a mouse and keyboard. And most of all cost. Headsets need to be around $100 to get in most homes.

I have to agree. I could see flight sim guys heading into VR as it could give a decent in-cockpit feel when paired with a HOTAS. Other than that type of environment there just doesn't seem that much of a benefit for me. I can't see in 3-D, so it just turns into a movable view screen to me, something that I don't need in the games I play.

got the feeling many people here are talking out of their ass and never actualy played with it

i have buy the oculus rift dk2 and while this was a prototype vr are realy not gimmick or pretty 3d screen.

when you have this on your head you realy feel you are there, for exemple when you play a rolercoster it give the same feeling that when you do A REAL ROLERCOSTER, and that with realy bad graphic games... hell they are not even any good game out yet.

but this feeling of being there only with a vr heatset you feel it, and when you play game the potential limitless when the tech improve, honestly that something YOU NEED TRY FOR UNDERSTAND.

for me im going wait until 2017 because the tech realy early, but this will not be a gimmick and im sure it will change game, because it can only improve games and i would bet every game with release with something like that in many years.

$100 for a 150inch 3D screen... if you want quality, that's too cheap, or you'll get a crappy resolution. You want at least full HD.
They simply need to cost the same price as a good 3D monitor or TV.
Occulus Rift is going to cost under $500 apparently, and that's a very fair price.
That's now, 3 to 5 years from now it will be posable. Like I said above, we are years from it meaning anything or the norm.

I have a 40" screen I watch at 1.5 meter for movies, so it's pretty huge at that distance (approx. equivalent to sitting in the middle rows in a movie theater), and it's still not the 150inch screen you get with a virtual reality headset...

With TrackIR, I have an unlimited sized screen just like VR but without some ridiculous contraption strapped to my head that won't let me see the dog asking to be taken out, without me cautiously moving my hand around my desk feeling for my drink, and then having the lip of the glass smack into the clunky headset while I'm sipping from said drink... ect ect ect.  No.

I agree as far as price goes, 500 is totally fair. Look how much we pay (would pay without the contracts) for cellphones. My galixy note 4 was like 600 bucks + The screens there putting into the vr headsets are much more complicated than those, and still high res. I think you all should at least talk to someone who has one that isn't a DK2 once there released, and give it a whirl. I have heard people who have done some testing with the newer than dk2 (forget what its called sorry) and its leagues better than the dk2 model. It also even in that state which is still not release is 25% lighter than the dk2 model. Stuff like this really is pretty cool to. I totally expect to see more facilities like this popping up if a software developer gets behind using them. Holodeck anyone? :open_mouth:

You guys go ahead and pioneer it... I'll wait for the 3rd generation implant :)

I stick with my 4k setup and dual monitors, thank you.

I like to have a wiki or browser open on the second screen. I love to chat and for that i need to see the keyboard. I want to be able to answer calls and see who joins in TS/Mumble etc.

Most of all i don't like the crappy resolution/refresh which is bad for my eyes and it gives me motion sickness.

VR is too much inconvenience for me. This fad will die as fast as it did in the 80's.
