It really seems obvious to me that gamer's "forget" what was done a year ago and simply jump on the next bandwagon and THINK that is the best game now.
IMO FFXI is at least in many aspects the best mmorpg,UT99 is the best pvp fps, and far as moba's arpg's go,don't like them at all so couldn't care less what is the best.Best TCG well i think imo right now it is shared becaiuse both games do something good/well for the genre, the long standing MTG is still arguably the best with Duelyst coming in as a near equal because it is taking the skill/strategy aspect to another level.I own thousands of mtg cards yet i prefer to play Duelyst so in reality perhaps i find Duelyst to be the best TCG.
Best overall game,,very tough choice if i had to choose one but i definitely know i would have no problem with Half Life 1 or 2 holding that torch.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

The opposite can also be said to be true, and many gamers will apply nostalgia to blow an old gem way out of proportion.
As much as I like an Unreal Tournament, experiences like Tribes Ascend (in its hayday) could easily stand up to it and provide experiences that UT just couldn't.
As much as Skyrim captivates audiences, it has, in my opinion, mediocre-at-best combat, an astoundingly bad magic system, a total lack of class definition, a world full of unlikable characters, and arguably doesn't hold up without fan mods. It does what it does well, but someone like me would much prefer the narrative excellence, gorgeous world, and more demanding combat of something like The Witcher 3. And yet many would call Skyrim the best RPG of all time without a hint of sarcasm.
Experiences are ultimately subjective. It isn't really a matter of old vs. new. It may not even be a case of good vs. bad. New games can be incredible, and still not appeal to a particular person. Old games could release to universally mediocre reception today and be fondly remembered. The opposite can also be true.
Best MMO? I do not have a best. I have played EQ2 the longest. I still sub and love it. AC was the MMO that I lost my life in for a long time.
I am, I think, a rare person in that I think the Half Life series is over-rated. System Shock, Far Cry 2, Deux Ex are the better to me.
I agree with @Aeander Skyrim had so many issues that it made it hard for me to really get into. Morrowind was their best imo. Even Oblivion I thought was better than Skyrim.
Best RPG? Gothic 2 and NWN for me.
Gothic 2 was just amazing, they don't make these kind of RPGs anymore. The Witcher series is the only which I consider outstanding today, and might even be the best RPG series of all time. CD Projekt is all about quality.
I wish I could say the same about Bethesda, but sadly I can't. After Morrowind everything went downhill, and reached the bottom with Skyrim. Yes their games are selling damn well, but at what cost? Bethesda got greedy, and is done creating deep meaningful RPGs.
Thankfully ESO wasn't developed by Bethesda. I never thought I'd see another TES game with outstanding story the way things were going. It might not be as famous as Skyrim, but that's only due to not being very friendly to the Skyrim casual players. It was clearly aimed at Veteran TES gamers, which explains why there are so many Morrowind fans loving it.
This was my pick too. A lot could have been done better, but the community made this game epic. Sadly, due to its nature, it suffered greatly from faction imbalances when population became a real issue, and lights-out wasn't far behind. I particularly liked that real naval strategies could be employed to great effect when people cooperated. Too bad it isn't still around.
First you guys say games are over-hyped now this...
Some games are over-hyped, some games are under-hyped. It's not a mutually exclusive paradigm.
Also "hype" is an extremely temporal concept. A game is announced to a lot of hype. Then some details are fleshed out and some people jump off the bandwagon because they don't like some concepts. Some people jump on cause they were unsure to begin with.
Then the closed beta comes out and some people jump off the bandwagon and some jump on as they get to see it working. Then open beta with yet another exchange of players on the hype train.
Finally the game is released and for a couple months after that the AAA companies behind these massive hype trains will advertise the title like crazy to generate more release hype. A few months later the reviews are all out, the advertising stops and the hype train starts to run out of juice.
I wouldn't say that there's any hype at all for a game that's been on the market for a year. It's just a game that's on the market. You either play it or you don't, but no one's like OMG have you heard about The Elder Scrolls MMO that came out two years ago? I heard it's siiiiick dude!
Probably the most under-hyped game that I can remember to date, due to the low amount of pre-release advertising was The Secret World. There was very little buzz about it. Not many people frothing at the mouth to play it. I worked in an office full of gamers when it came out and not one person in the office had heard of it or even cared to try it.
Most Underrated? H1Z1 for sure. Being involved with the games inception, a year ago. It has made great strides forward in game play.graphics A-Z and all along devs have kept the players involved and "listened" to our input. The community is growing fast and there is still so much more that the game will be bringing to the table at its "full release" It is staying true to its theme of survival and giving players an opportunity to open soo many crafting recipes along the way... H1Z1 is on it's way of making its mark in the MMO market
LOTRO, honestly if LOTRO was the big game instead of WOW, mmos today would be in much better standing. If LOTRO would have continued making group content it would be a true powerhouse today. The classes are very fun. And the raids are very demanding. Plus their Monster Play is one of my favorite PvP systems ever.

I agree with you that it is underrated, but it is definitely not growing in community. Upon release it had up to 40K players and now it peaks at 18K tops.
It's a dying game just like DayZ Standalone. By the time "Full Release" comes people will and have already moved on to other games and most likely won't revisit. Alpha releases just ruin games.
LOTRO. The sheer absurd wealth of content, and a consistent immersive universe make it a special game to me. If there were a massive graphical overhaul I think the game would enjoy a second life, but for most younger folks it's difficult to get over the dated graphics hurdle.
It could be this, considering it is the only MMORPG experience that gets relatively close to pen-and-paper RPGs and would charge at least a $40-50 monthly subscription fee from each player if it was run by a commercial company. It's the only MMORPG experience where you can get individual catering from a live human dungeon master who has lots of tools to entertain you almost like they do in pen-and-paper RPGs.
Well, I'd have to say Dark Age of Camelot. It's PvP/RvR mechanics are still unmatched. It remains to be the best game in the pvp category, and it may remain the best for at least another 10 years. It is just too bad that the population is so small now, due to it being outdated...
Planetside 1 as well, it is so much better then 2. I also really enjoy eve online...
old Horizons...or now Istaria, Chronicles of the Gifted....the game has SO MUCH potential, yet the main developer of the game sadly left when he said he never would....it's still afloat surprisingly but unless someone does something with it, it is gonna sadly die....it has the potential to beat all MMOs if a huge mega team of awesome artists and developers can come together and make it kick ass...the ideas are already implemented in the game....crafting system is one of the best ...but needs a whole new revamp....community is the best and most mature in any MMO around....loyalty to a game also...AND the ONLY game where you can be a baby dragon, grow up to be an elder and actually fly as one...and have attacks as a dragon....best experience I have had in any MMO ever...if someone would just SAVE this masterpiece that is sadly OLD as heck but with a TOTAL re-vamp could rule them all!
The best for me? I'd say Asheron's Call 1 on that count. With Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies having the potential to be, but never quite pulling it together. But the most underrated (and unknown) in my book would have to be 'Uncharted Waters Online'. Huge world to explore, dynamic trade system, exciting but not overly burdensome PvP (i.e. player pirates, and occasional "Epic Sea Wars" between nations), and a great old school type international community of generally friendly players.
You are asking about the most underrated not the best. You mean a good game that is not given its due. Although I liked EQ 2 I think what I liked about it belonged to 2005 . It is still a good game but it has an older population and with time games like this become top heavy and with the number expansions I have lost count even more so.
May be FFXIV I think it should get more praise and I feel it is underrated.

The same could be said about ESO, GW2 or SWTOR. All of them are still outstanding for their own reasons. Yet they still can't reach WoW, and are arguably way better. The fact is that WoW has so high numbers no MMO could ever reach it, no matter how good it is. WoW is highly overrated, not the other way around.
Sadly I don't see any MMO dethroning it anytime soon. ESO might have a shot if ES6 never released, but that's never going to happen. To dethrone WoW you need to have a huge following, so I'd say if Tencent was to create an MMO they would surely dethrone WoW.

AO is a decent choice too
Of shut down MMORPGs I would go with EQOA.
