Most would disagree because most of the IPs people loved that EA bought were shut down.

Origin:  Wing Commander, Ultima RPGs, Ultima Online. . all ended after being bought by EA (except UO on life support  studio closed after purchase

Maxis:  Sim City, the Sims, Spore etc.. . studio closed after purchase

    etc. etc. etc.

Bioware .. purchased. . still some good game and not closed although founders bailed.

For me they are like the company that saves the little guy from going out of business but then just uses the same hammer to get everything to fit.

As for OP. . my favourite although likely not the best was Origin. . I mean EA still uses their name every chance they get "Origin" used for their online store etc.

    Wow @Scorchien ;

You are actually changing my mind.    That is a list of a lot of great games.  I still hate the loss of creativity. . most of the stuff I loved that they did was old but still a huge amount.

Games Workshop by a huge margin.

They have spawned the highest selling and most ubiquitous tabletop wargaming systems in the form of Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40k, Bloodbowl, Mordheim, Battlefleet Gothic, Space Hulk and Necromunda.

They have a very fine selection of video games in the form of Dawn of War, Dawn of War II, Space Hulk, Mark of Chaos, Bloodbowl, Vermintide and the highly anticipated Warhammer: Total War and Eternal Crusade.

Their universe has inspired one of the largest libraries of fiction ever created around a gaming universe and retains one of the best grimdark sci-fi authors I've ever read: Dan Abnet.

Second to them would be pre-EA BioWare.  They really reinvented video gaming during their early years.  It's too bad that creativity took a nosedive towards the end.

From 1996 to 2009 they were really a fantastic company, but after that magic year they simply started copying themselves and not being innovative again at all.  Dragon Age: Origins was the last game from them that I truly enjoyed.  Yes, that includes Mass Effect 2 and 3 which were, in my opinion, utter on-rails lumps of coal with tiny little diamonds in each that weren't worth the box price of the game.  Then came the big turd known as SWTOR and the shine was totally off.

They also became political and started shoving their ideological propaganda down everyone's throats for no good reason at all.  I'm a libertarian and I don't give a flying fuck what people do with, or to, each other as long as it's not hurting anyone and I still thought "Why are they alienating an entire segment of gamers just to squeeze a gushing review out of Polygon?".  It makes no sense.

Thats doesnt amtter , they bought them , they continued making games under said IPs / supported /packaged/ advertised and updated .. Its Theres at that point ...

Let me guess , if you had purchased said IP , supported/distributed/updated/advertised/payedfor devleopment/... you would not consider it yours ... You would point at the other guy and say " yea , but this is his" ... I dont think so ..

    I loved all their shit.

I agree with this 100%.  If there wasn't  a Tolkien, then Games Workshop wouldn't be where it is today.  If there wasn't a Games Workshop, several video game studios wouldn't be where they are today.  Specially Blizzard.

your list is less than 3% of there released titles.... wtg ... and the sales of those ips would speak differently ..

But .. UO rpgs stopped production before the purchase... Garriot was done with Ultima after IX while under EA label , which Ea gave him all the support and backing he need to realease that mess...

The Sims is one of the most succesful IPs made /period and conitued many new games after purchase ..

Origin was garriot and UO so why mention them twice..

Yes 4 a decline , at this point , But ya gotta give them credit for 3 which was them ... and i think also they did such a nice job on 3 they shot themsleves in the foot...People are happy with 3, and they were realeasing outstanding ,content for 3 right up to the release of 4... so 4 suffered ...
This is where all of my personal issues come from.  They make good games but it was the creativity of the individual studios that gave those games life.  Sims 3 was very good but the game was more "forced", less of a playground.  They still make great games but I wish they had remained a publisher for those studios.  I get the business end of it completely.  They are hugely successful.  So in that sense for the OPs thread title. . I agree that they win.  They have done more for gaming than most.  They just also happened to have "changed" (I won't say ruined because other people like them) the games I once loved.  I actually like battlefront for what is is but it is less of a "full experience" just like I feels Sims 2 was a more "free" expereince over Sims 3.  They made it more accessible which is good for gaming but I have to look at indie developers now for something refreshing and new.

So I while I agree that they have done great things for gaming there were a lot of losses along the way.  I also agree that Origin was pretty much done at the time they acquired them.

It changes.  In the days of n64 of I would probably say RARE.  I mean camera sucked but they were knocking out hit after hit.  PS2 Square was dominating.  Blizzard had its hits on PC with Diablo 2, WC3, and WoW.  I mean talking about knocking it out of the freaking park.

And i get that man, ya know they piss me off to at times with there handling of some houses they bought up , But for everyone they did , they also nurtured trained and produced and gave oppurtunity to many up and comings.. MANY Developers that went on to have great careers elsewhere , they have pushed the PC gaming genre forward more than any other imo...

many will disagree , and i personally am not a huge fan of theres but all the succesful IPs speak for themselves .... EA
Most would disagree because most of the IPs you probably like belonged to other companies that EA bought that then became less successful.

As for OP. . my favourite although likely not the best was Origin. . I mean EA still uses their name every chance they get "Origin" used for their online store etc.

All those IPs were released under there label by smart business practice and solely belong to them as the Game developer...                         /end
Yes it matters. Are you drunk?

If I buy a bunch of championship teams in the NBA/NFL and then run them into the ground and they're never competitive again, I can't very well brag about how those teams were legendary before I bought them. That would be stupid.

Most of the very good games on that list were made before EA bought out their publishers. Few of them have had anything approaching a quality sequel and most of them just died an agonizing death at the hands of EA executives.

When you look at games actually published by EA at the time of their release, there's what? A bunch of low quality sports sims that are only financially successful because EA bought the licensing and ran better games out of the market. A few gems like Mirror's Edge. Some sequels to franchises they bought that were either let downs or flat out bad. You have to dig pretty deep into the list to find a few good games that EA is responsible for like the first few Medal of Honors.

Then you look at Sierra with great series like Half-Life, Homeworld, Tribes, King's Quest, Ultima 2, Lords of the Realm, Caesar, SWAT, TFC, Counter-Strike, etc. actually published by them and not just in the catalogue of some other publisher they bought out later.

Not only is EA not the best gaming company of all time, they have actively made gaming worse.

I loved SSI, Sir-Tech, Psygnosis etc.

Barbarian, Jagged Alliance, Wizardry, Roadwar 2000, Kampfgruffe etc. etc. etc.

But for variety of different styles of gaming and simulations and the quality of those products for their day, I'm going with Microprose.

    I loved all their shit.

man I loved Roadwar 2000 and Wizardry, 2 of my all-time favs

another classic was Auto-Duel...that would have made an unreal MMO if done right
