What it might have an impact on, if take into account recent trends anyway, is that more games are released as B2P instead of F2P, we could even be seeing the demise of F2P altogether, although sadly, cash shops are probably here to stay.
Yes. But why would you care if you are not a whale?
If you want to make a shooter then make a damn shooter. Stop trying to turn MMORPG's into something it isn't. They're two separate genres with different player mindsets and goals.

Hmm .. who says anything about MMORPG? You can't tell the difference between MMO and MMORPG?
And you should ask website sysops who classify Overwatch as a MMO. Plus, what is the problem with turning MMORPG ito something they are not? I thought people here want innovation & change?

Turning MMORPG's into shooters is neither. It's capitalizing on a trend. But then you know this.
Your crusade to turn this genre into a lobby based hack and slash single player game is getting old.

I am not the one who makes The Division .. a shooter MMO. And if devs want to turn this genre into a lobby based hack-n-slash single player game (like what blizz did with titan?) .. who am i to disagree?
And how can turning MMORPG into shooters not a change? Unless MMORPG are already shooters. You seems to be experiencing a lapse of logic.

A shooter with MMO elements does not a MMO make That's a lapse in logic
It doesn't matter what the website labels something as. Labeling a soda as milk is not going to effect how cooks use milk.
Really? So new comers who have no ideas about MMOs will not think that Overwatch is a MMO? Heck, there are other posters on THIS topic alone to post as such. You don't think websites play a role in that?
See that is the beauty of a MMO label. You can make it anything, and it won't affect how the products are used, unlike milk. Otherwise, why would its use be broadenly and made so loose?
A much better question would have been is, if Blizzard was more inclined to reopen development of Titan now Overwatch has been a success? and people want to play in a world with the lore they have created than some simple arena pvp shooter.
There has already been a selection of MMOs with fps as its core combat long before Overwatch came along.... i really don't see how it would have any influence on MMOs . Its the most simple 6vs6 arena shooter, wth do you pull from that to influence MMOs lol.
So OW already sold more than 7M copies. The cheapest is the $40 PC version, so Blizz has already made $280M in its first week. May be a bit lower than The Division, but still, it is priced at $40, not $60 across the board (except for consoles).
It is also highly rated on metacritics.
I bet Blizz is really happy scrapping Titan and made OW. Are we going see
a) even more online team shooters? b) more MMOs are going to be shooter-like to capitalize on the trend c) now OW is going to be called a MMO (not that it has not) by more websites just to drive traffic?
Discuss!
You forget how many of those 7 million bought lootboxes, I bought 100 of them others buy less and some much much more, those 100 lootboxes is worth 2.5 times more than the game.. and im sure they will release something soon that will make people pay
It is a hyped game will sell pretty well. Is all about what happen in a few months down the line if people move in to the next hyped game. But Overwatch still will have a place.
Yeah the definition of what an mmo is, is getting more blurred each day. But why though? Why suddenly mix and match the genres. Overwatch is smaller than BF4 in size and no one has ever called Battlefield an mmo? Not of my knowledge atleast. Its a multiplayer fps. Why complicate things?
I don't count games as MMO until they're capable of having a thousand players on the same server able to see each other without switching between different instances.
Overwatch can't change how MMO's are made, but it can sure as hell change what genre of game a developer might make.
It's funny to talk about Overwatch as it's something groundbreaking when other team shooter games have been around forever.
Exactly. Overrated is popular because the genre is popular, Blizzard is popular, and it's been a while (guessing?) since a well polished shooter has been released.
It's funny to talk about Overwatch as it's something groundbreaking when other team shooter games have been around forever.
I would say the tremendous amount of talk is simply because there really hasn't been a team based shooter that's come out since TF2, so we're talking nearly a decade. For many younger players, OW might be their first foray into the team based shooter genre, not to mention the legion of Blizzard fans who pretty much only play Blizzard games...and yes they are out there.
What is going to be more interesting is to see what Blizzard does with this new IP of theirs. Blizzard has constructed the world and heroes so well that the little bit of background we get is merely just the taste. Many people have been asking for more story, more background, etc.
It's interesting to think that Blizzard's failed mmo, turned successful team based shooter, could potentially become the groundwork for a mmo?
I find it fascinating that Blizzard has been able to dominate every genre they've put a product into.
Blizzard Flight Simulator coming soon...
Wrong. They failed with HotS. They are not even close to dominating the moba scene. LoL and Dota 2 are years ahead and better games. HotS are a complete failure.
To say HotS is a complete failure is ridiculous. LoL and DotA2 do have a higher user base yes, but HotS has fared better than an army of other mobas that have come out as well. Along with Blizzard's marketing department, we don't see many mobas that have their own ESPN special events.
If Twitch viewership is any form of gauge of popularity as a whole, HotS is consistently in third place then behind LoL and DotA2. There's apparently a dedicated population that enjoys HotS.
Give it some time, all developers do is throw money at the game in hopes of creating another Esport game. Let's see how far it goes, if that Esports catches on, this game has one hell of a life ahead of it.
I dont know if I would consider Overwatch a big success in MMO terms just because it sold a lot of copies. Heck, WoD sold 15M? and then lost all those subs in just 2-3 months. Only way to tell is to see how many people are still playing a few months from now
I find it fascinating that Blizzard has been able to dominate every genre they've put a product into.

I think it's a bit early to say they're dominating the online shooter genre at present. That won't be evident for quite some time. There's a lot of competition there, with quite a few big names to contend with. When they start hitting COD like numbers, let me know.

MMORPG aren't going to evolve into genres that already exist.
I would like to see a fantasy style Planetside. But MMOFPS exist already.
