I prefer K&M as well but if a game plays better with a controller I won't hesitate to use it... because the controller is far superior for that game.
Are you all just not very good at using them or something? I've seen avid PC gamers try to use one before and they just lacked the motor skills to be able to use two analogue sticks at the same time. They could not control the view properly at all, it was all over the place. It was frustrating to watch. If it works better with a controller then the only reason to hate using a controller is because you can't use it properly. I really cant think of another reason. They aren't uncomfortable and if the game is deigned for it then it has all the functionality it needs.
That's not meant to be an insult. I get that if you haven't practised with something then it's easy to avoid using it and we all like to stick to what we know.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
But for PC, it could be a lot better port. I like the game, but having to use systems clearly meant for controller on keyboard + mouse means it's only above average game, when it could be excellent.
Yes, the controls on PC for some of the things is awful. But honestly I'm surprised it turned out as good as it did.
I've seen endless complaints about the UI and how systems work in the game for the PC launch, but I don't think people realize how bad these systems used to be in MH games. It's one of those "back in my day" things, but holy crap is the game so much easier to deal with than the series used to be.
Why bother porting it to PC if they aren't going to do it right and show respect for mouse and keyboard? Oh, right, it's a nice money grab at our expense. I'm done with ported games from consoles. I hate controllers and I despise developers who port these games half-assed. Sometimes I think they forget that they have to earn their money and that our patronage is not a given.

It's like playing PC for me; if I spend time, I get pretty good. I just don't enjoy the way most games feel on console playing with a controller. I like my mouse for precision input.
Sad to see K+M elitism roar its ugly and infantile head again. Input device snobbery has to be the dumbest thing around. Especially since K+M isn't always superior. Lets use some examples:
For beat em ups a fighting stick is the best. For racing games pedals and a wheel are the best. For flying games a flight stick is the best.
We all know the above and are fine with it, but for 3d action games a controller is usually the best and all of a sudden people start foaming at the mouth. Just like the examples mentioned above these games are perfectly playable with K+M, its just not the best option. And all of a sudden it is about dumbing down, console peasants, bad ports etc.
Consoles brought DQ11, MHW, the Dark Souls series, Hellblade etc. etc. etc. to PC, the time of Looking down on these devices is long gone. Also, real gamers don't only own a PC

You guys know you can just use a controller on PC, right?
Why be stubborn and insist on using k&m even though you know it's crap?
The game is meant to be played with a controller, use a controller. You don't need to be afraid of the almighty controller.
I hate controllers. If I actually liked them I'd buy myself a ps4 and never look back.
It only hurts the first time.

It would personally take a generation-defining game to get me to hook up a controller to my PC.
I have a console, but don't play it because I dislike using a controller to play video games. I'd rather not see a trend of PC ports that require a controller to function intuitively.
While I generally agree, there are types of games that are just better / more naturally suited to a controller, just as there are games that are better / more naturally suited to a KB+M.
So sure MHW could have better (i.e. native) support for KB+M, but it's gameplay / fighting system (which is heavily combo based and often deliberatly locks your position / facing) is, IMO, far more suited to a controller anyway.

Agreed.
Gaming should not be defined by the input method used to play it. If people are too narrow minded to embrace a control method that a game is designed for then don't play it. Your loss.
Now excuse me I have to get back to the new Madden....on my PC....with a controller.
I don't have any hard and fast rules about controllers or M+KB. I play console games with controllers (NHL18 on PS4 is one I play often) and I have played some PC games with controllers as well if that was a better scheme.
Having said that, it's not like we don't have hundreds or thousands of games that have been released on PC and consoles over the years and most of those games put in the effort to develop a good and standard WASD-based, M+KB game interfaces. It's the norm actually.
But my one and only Capcom game I have on Steam, Dragon's Dogma, is a great game despite the god awful M+KB implementation. As I said above some of their key choices (Insert and PgUp for selection of your inventory or one of your Pawns) are just plain weird and they can't even be re-mapped. So now we have another Capcom game with the same sub standard M+KB implementation that annoys some who may not have controllers or just may not be comfortable using them. I'm starting to see a theme here about one developer who doesn't think standard M+KB control schemes are worth adopting or bothering with.
It may be a minor thing for those of us who don't mind using a controller with our PCs but I can see how it would annoy the crap out of some.

I don't hate controllers but I cannot use them with any degree of accuracy unless it is a turn based game . Anything that requires me to navigate with the thumb sticks are impossible for me. Practice just makes me marginally better with no real success even in games set at easy difficulty.
If I manage to reconfigure the thumb pad to allow me to move with it, the game becomes appreciably more controllable as far as the movement of my avatar is concerned and in all other cases sheer drunken mobility is the best I can manage. So any action game is out. That is the only reason I prefer the mouse and KB it is not elitism in any shape or form.

Controllers are a substandard way of controlling a games, rather ironic really. A Mouse and keyboard are not designed for gaming, the fact they are better just shows how woeful controllers are.

Stop stirring the pot Scot (that sounds nice when spoken out loud), we both know that is just nonsense. The idea of playing a beat em up like Blazblue with KB+M alone....

If you don't have a controller though, having to spend an additional $60 just to play a game on the PC, is entirely unreasonable. Its a sign that the port from console was badly implemented.

Perhaps. Yet a bad port is different than the game is bad because it's preferred input method is one used with a controller over mouse and keyboard. I can play Madden 19 with a mouse and keyboard but when it plays more smooth with a controller why not use it? Besides the 'bad port' to PC for MHW goes beyond just the input method. It's larger problem is it's online system and DC's while playing multiplayer. These problems have nothing to do with the input method. Which can be addressed in a patch. Which is why I will stick to my console version of MHW because it is excellent. Controller and all.
I just wish that more of these console ports to PC were like Dragons Dogma
Its bad enough they used Denuvo after all, the way things are going, if i get the game it might just be the PS4 version rather than a PC version.
I think the thing people aren't understanding about keyboard and mouse users here is that the majority of us value aim over movement. Yes a controller is more comfortable and easier for movement. However we place a higher value on the speed and accuracy of raw mouse input for camera and aim control. When you've spent years playing games with a mouse and then you're asked to deal with dead zones, floatiness, cursor acceleration and aim assist it is quite frankly intolerable.
I play Warframe with mouse and keyboard and frequently solo the daily sorties. I recently suffered a hand injury and thought I could relieve some pain while I healed by using a controller. I honestly couldn't believe how terrible it was. I could barely get the reticle on the enemies let alone make headshots, and yet decreasing the sensitivity didn't seem viable because camera turn speed was already too slow to deal with all the enemies surrounding me. In the end I decided I'd rather be in pain than use the controller.
Controllers absolutely have their place in my gaming library though. Any time I'm playing a game where I don't need to shoot something I'm happy to use it. But if I need to aim there is simply no substitute for a mouse.
Pretty hilarious to watch the knee-jerk reactions to folks simply preferring an input style.
K+M is simply and vastly the most popular input style for the PC gaming population. It's not snobbery to act as if a port directly to that population should make an effort to include an intuitive design strategy for the input style overwhelmingly preferred by that population. It's just good business sense.

Just like flight simulator games should? I think its nonsense. K+M isn't designed to be the number one for every type of controlling, it isn't multi functional like that.
And ALL those games actually work with K+M, it just isn't always optimal, it simply can't be.
And preference is fine, it isn't about that though, it is about demanding and down talking, about the weird idea that K+M is and always should be the number 1 choice.
