Some of these posts are taking me back to when I was defending naming polices on old MMOs and what counted as a proper roleplaying name. It is about the actual names, but also the approach people take to this that says so much about them.

If you want to try and cheat a naming convention are you the sort of person anyone would want in their guild? If you are going to argue the toss about how Hydrogen fits in a fantasy world how long is it before we would have to be dealing with your alt "The Dalek" in Age of Conan or Lord of the Rings?

It is as others have said, be a good guest even if you are not a roleplaying or immersion fan.
The point is that there have to be CLEAR and CONSISTENT rules.  As mentioned, the best would be for a manual review of the names.

Having an arbitrary decision-making process just leads to chaos and unnecessary drama.
Yes a manual review of each name would be best, but you can't have clear and consistent rules of naming, just a broad concept. As we have seen from the short look at this issue here (I have seen threads going on for pages in double figures) it is not possible to have an easy set of rules. Unless you want to go down the line of players picking from a list of approved names (which is quicker) but I think is unnecessary, just have each one checked by a person.

More game should have required naming rules such as a medieval name not in modern use and be RP required.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Honestly, I think the EU Roleplay servers for Lord of the Rings Online are a great place to look when it comes to a fairly decent naming policy that is enforced but not horribly restrictive.

I don't think anyone is expecting you guys to check each and every name, but if names are reported that's where you could step in. I remember when starting on Laurelin in Lotro, there were forum threads which put people on the right track, that seemed to help a lot.

Aye, this is more than likely the route we'll be going.

@Renfail glad to see you keep doing what youre doing.

Anyone who's trying to pressure you into changing your targeted, focused game into a vaguely pleasant sweet grey mush is not someone worth paying attention to.

To be clear, I'm not the target audience for the game but I know people are into this and dont have many options, glad youre making something for them.

If you make it well, people will come, no doubt about it.

Not WoW numbers, but thats not an option for anyone, anyway.
