Are you NUTS? Have you ever been in the real world?
EQ was a huge hit and it was PvE. Please, don't tell me the PvP servers made it PvP. WoW is 90% PvE, EQ2 is purely PvE. CoH is PvE.
Now lets look at the flops.
Shadowbane, AO, AC2, Lineage II
There are tons more on both sides, get real and stop making false claims.
Personally i dont think that PvE is an "essential" it just makes it a hell of a lot more fun.
The best part in an MMO game for me is to get a char to a high elvel / good abilitys / nice items (whatever the challenege is) and then to see how good i really am against other players.
To a certain extent this is not possible against other computer players as you can learn there stratagies...etc. within a few deaths. BUT human players will be forever changing as will there powers/items...etc.
I have only played one completly PvE game (CoH) and i thought the game was quite good. But after hitting 30 i got bored... where is the fun in just leveling a char for not having the fun in testing out how good you are by killing other players.
Maybe if someone who enjoys PvE could say what they enjoy about it over PvP??

65k accounts in the US (or so I read) is hardly near even EQ1.

65k American accounts would probably be an accurate statement, however worldwide its only beaten by Lineage 1 and WoW however I beleive.

Well, frankly I don't care about what Korea and China enjoys as far as MMOrpgs go. If we want to go by popularity world wide there are a lot of things I'd have to suffer, like not speaking english for one.
The fact remains that people do enjoy PvE only games and said games are successful.
As to the EQ2 statement made by the other fella... Besides WoW name one other recent fantasy based mmorpg that is popular? That's right, EQ2 is it. 2nd place.
I play PVP and PvE games, FPS, MMorpgs and whatever Guild Wars is considered but even I am not so silly to think that a game HAS to have pvp or it's crap. EQ and the forthcoming DDO do not have PVP but guess what, a lot of people still play the hell out of them...
Its all down to your own preferance and beefin about it is pointless i prefer games with PvP as it would likely get boring at high lvls without it and it adds a new dimension. To the person who says WOW is only 10% PvP i guess you only played it till lvl 10 right ? or on a non PvP server.... WOW is hugely PvP you cant help but get in PvP scraps where ever you go 90% of the maps are PvP enabled and there is no such thing as PK system so you can kill away to your hearts content. Not to mention the whole rank system and the Battleground so people can enjoy yet more PvP.
You people really are crazy. EQ2 is the best mmorpg there is out there and it saddens me greatly to know there are so many people that are so shallow minded. I have played them all and eq2 is the only one with so much content and there will be pvp in eq2 come september.....

Im sorry but WoW has the WORST PvP ive EVER seen implemented in a game.It takes the word "carebear" to a whole new level.
1.No land control.
2.No armor drops or even high level equipment
3.Even on a PvP server you cant attack a player on the same side as you. This is not open PvP by any means.
There is absolutley no point at all to the PvP in WoW outside of battlegrounds. The only PvP that matters in WoW is INSIDE the battlegrounds.WoW is so carebear oriented, even on its PvP servers, its not even funny. The rogues cant even pickpocket other players. At least in Shadowbane the thief class could steal from other players and more than likely not get caught if they were any good.
PvP with no or little consequence is even LESS fun than a player ganking you repeatedly. If you want to try a REAL PvP oriented game with REAL consequences go play L2 or even Shadowbane both are superior games in comparison to WoW.Yeah so you get socalled "honorable"armor big deal. When most players talk about PvP its not on a carebear level at all. When i gank a player i want his gold not a point.I want his highest level item or his best piece of armor.
Blizzard needs to put the "WAR"back in "WARCRAFT".I never thought id see a developer of an mmo take the concept of PvP and make it into a carebear game.
Saying that WoW has PvP is like saying Shadowbane has a great bunch of players that wont loot your body for all its worth when someone ganks you.
BTW with out PvP or with it imho EQ2 is a far superior product.(i play the game and do wish for a open PvP server at some point in the near future)

Personal preference does not equate to shallow mindedness. EQ2 is the best MMORPG out there ..for you. I cannot stress personal preference enough. And about EQ2 getting PvP in September; I don't trust any game that isn't built on PvP from release.

Haha! I was level 60 (twice I might add) and was rank 10 (out of 14) and standing 5 on my server before BGs were added. Once BGs were added my ranks dropped once every 2 weeks no matter how much I PvP'd in those "amazing" BGs. I'd sit for 12 hours waiting to get in to PvP before I'd just log out in disgust.
For those that know, standing 5 means I was 5th in all people on my server in PVP... so I know a little bit about PVP.
WoW is 90% PvE, get a clue. All the equipment and experience comes from PvE. The items for PvP ranks are almost impossible to get anymore due to the "ladder" system that changes week to week. If you want to get anywhere at 60 you have to farm MC/Ox and lord knows thats the peak of bordom.
Perhaps you haven't played past 10 because the "end game" of WoW with the BG's is terrible. Instanced PVP is the worst thing in the world ... But, like everything else Blizzard knows best for you!
A. Whether the original poster want to admit it or not. This thread is a troll thread. Coming into a non PvP mmorpg and the posting a title stating that No PvP = Bad Game then placing in the body of the message "Topic says it all" is a trollish statement all the way.
The original intent of the very first post was to generate hate and frustration; nothing more. The Orignal poster could have posted this thread a many different ways without upsetting people(as the majority of posters here have some liking to the game)
If the poster were to post the topic and then a meaningful post, then it would not be a troll post. But I think we all can agree here (EQ2 fans and non fans alike) the jist of this this thread was to promote frustration, anger, and hostility.
Also, this thread pretty much ran itself into the grave by page 3.
Just a side note (since I see this "argument" all the time) Just because a game does not have as many members as Lineage 2 or WoW does not mean the game is not successful.
Out of all my time into mmorpgs (12 years) I have seen very little unsuccessful mmorpgs.
Success in a mmorpg is measured by the amount of support it receives, the fanbase it develops, the longevity of the product, and the profit gained once all programmers, coders, and publishers have been paid off.
Dont measure a game based on another game's subscription number; you'll only be robbing yourself from a wonderful mmorpg you otherwise might not get
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

Stop saying EQ2 is a success, it horribly failed in comparison to WoW http://mmogchart.com/Chart1.html

Nothing worth saying here. Wish I could delete this post, I hate this thread.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
