I understand the OPs sentiments, but you know, EVE Online still has almost everything they long for yet probably aren't playing it for "reasons."
Can't take such complaints all that seriously if gamers are going to ignore what few available choices there are today.
Life is Feudal is shuttering their doors so I have to ask if the OP had supported them?
How about Albion Online, actually doing pretty well for itself, is the OP playing it?
The thing is, if gamers don't well support what is available why would anyone bother to make a newer, more expensive version without any solid evidence it might be a success?
The reasons are pretty big tbh...I don't play it because I dislike the turn spread sheet combat and the huge entry level via grinding and competing against people that have been playing for years.
No cherry picking please, what about Albion Online then, or Project Gorgon?
Can you stop just spamming this over and over. Its pretty simple and not hard to see why these games are not for everyone. Project Gorgon looks like fucking dog shit. Its a game that looks like it was created on the Sega Genesis. Most people that have played a modern game cant tell what shapes Project Gorgon art assets represent because the game looks that freaking bad. Its a small indy game but they chose not to use a modern engine platform and it looks terrible when you are hoping for a good looking game.
Moving on to Albion, its also an incrediblely boring game for a substantial amount of mmo enthusiasts. Like EVE, Albion has you repeating boring mundane tasks and it isn’t extremely fun or insightful. Right clicking on a tree 1,000,000 times obviously isnt fun for a lot of people. Just like right clicking on a moon rock or navigating though a solar system because instead of looking at cool planets and stars you instead have a spreadsheet pulled up that takes up 3/4 of your screen listing everything that your spacecraft can warp to. Albions combat is also severely limited in terms of what people would expect from a 3D mmo.
Like it isn’t unreasonable that a lot of people find EVE, Project Gorgon, and Albion trash games despite having certain aspects a out them that resonate with “old school” mmorpgs.

You made my point then, every game is a no go for various "reasons" yet people wonder why no games are ever made the way they would like.
At the end of the day the problem is less about the games themselves as there are obviously some folks who enjoy them, but more on those who disqualify everything that comes along.
The problem is really you then, the far too fussy gamer who wants the game to be adapted to their preferences rather than learning and adapting to what's available.

Project gorgon is an indie game with all the flaws that come with it and not many of the unique rewards(although it does has some like randomness). The graphics are a turn-off but I played/played rs/osrs so I can't really use that. Combat is pretty boring and I am past tab target in general. I prefer fps or at the least action combat. I gave the game a fair shake in beta, but for me personally it is too boring.
Albion is pretty decent for what it is; a mobile mmorpg. Sure it is improving but I need my mmorpgs to be 3rd person or first person, I very much dislike isometric views. Zerging and the meta when my guild played(Aoe tank pull and aoe range/magic spam) killed the game for most of us. I love the full loot, and danger involved when going to places/gathering, but at the time we played July 2019 the pve was pretty lacking and the main reason we played(pvp) just wasn't good enough for the majority of us and arena was really the only way we could have fun without the faults the game has in the world pvp.(The pvp shards portals were pretty decent though).
Darkfall online ruined me on pretty much most mmorpgs and I really won't feel satisfied until one similar(but better lol, because DFO had tons of faults) makes it into the mmorpg space. Profane looks like it might but with the current state of EA/Kickstarter mmorpgs it seems unlikely.
Like it isn’t unreasonable that a lot of people find EVE, Project Gorgon, and Albion trash games despite having certain aspects a out them that resonate with “old school” mmorpgs.
and yet, EvE is an Actual Old School game, that is what Old School games were/are like. UO is still around if you want to really kick it old school, and if that is not for you, then you are not looking for an Old School Game, and it's high time you put your big kid pants on and grow up and realize that.

I have got to say, your analogies are positively horrible.
But, I like Pizza too, in fact there is a local pizza place in my town, that I positively loved to go to, small little mom&pop operation, the owner is this old dude that has his whole family working there, and they all spoke and yelled in Italian in the back rooms, which I could often hear out in the lobby, I love that dynamic of the place, and they even made their own pizza sauce and everything, always too much oregano, always. But, I loved eating there, and I would go there every week on my way home from work to pick up a Calzone for dinner, and on the week ends, if I was out shopping, I would stop in and grab a slice and a drink and enjoy the ambiance of that little pizza shop. Now, over the years they grew to know me, I knew most of them, and I had been going there for so many years they would even have my Calzone ready, exactly as I wanted it, for pick up without me needing to call ahead, and I remained a loyal costumer of theirs till I sold my house and moved several states away due to work.
To this day, I think fondly of their pizza and the time I enjoyed in their shop, I learned the owner died, and they sold the place, so it is gone forever, much like some MMO's.
Now for me, a Good MMO should be the same way, if it really is "The best that ever was" there should be no urge or need to leave it, if you are enjoying something, then you stay with it.
Now to your question about staying with a game, I have been playing DDO now for a little over a decade (That's 10+ years) because I dead ass believe it is one of the best games on the market, while the graphics are dated, it's still an amazing game. and I play other MMO's from time to time, like I have played GW2, ESO, BDO, and the like, sometimes just to get a feel for what is out there, and then I return to DDO and play that as well, because, as I said, it is a great game, and I will stay with it, till legit something actually better comes out.
Going to honest, I am rather gobsmacked about your stand that you need to jump away from game simply because you need to do something "new and fresh" and yet want something old school.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

I've always wondered if he worked for them in some capacity...I have never seen such a die hard for a game, but if he likes it that much more power to him.....He was usually pretty civil about it though and I am surprised he got a temp ban.

Interesting, my Grandfather was a member of the same golf course / country club for over 30 years, my father the same with his.
Besides moving around the pin / tee placement both courses had the same 18 holes the entire time.
Sure, they both played other courses over the years, but they always returned to and supported the one the enjoyed the most.

Again, no cherry picking, I mention Albion Online, a fairly recent release, within last 5 years for sure, same with LiF.
Still you didn't play, again for reasons which mostly are on you, not that newer games with more challenge don't exist.

Actually, I did support them to the bitter end. Even brought up my own server when that became a "thing". Like one poster said, part of it is the nostalgia, but that nostalgia is because the game play was awesome. I currently bought Gorgon Project and am testing that one now.
I appreciate everyone's thoughts. The many game recommendations are fantastic. I will do more research. Thanks All
I did like Darkfall, but the game was ridden with cheaters. After losing 3 months (real life time) of collecting, armor, weapons, loot, resources to a cheater, attacking me from under ground, I couldn't defend myself, and ditched the game. It was too costly to play to be griefed.
Also: happy new year everyone, new games fans, old games fans, nostalgic or not!!

The unicorn thing is weird because he actively insults people, but because no one knows what he means, they accept it. I think him using unicorn constantly was actually pretty smart if your goal is to diminish every poster you respond to.
That also makes for a very ugly and uninviting argument as to why one should care about his baby, but if the goal is simply to make posters lesser than him, it's kind of smart in a way. I guess?

Perhaps we could counter his Unicorn with a Hypogryph, a Pegasus or Phoenix? Just some random mythical animal to see where the conversation takes us. We could post some pictures of it, perhaps a chart or two showing how it is better then his Unicorn and if we are really lucky we might find a couple of video’s we could link to show how awesome it is.

I was told unicorns would still exist, but they were to busy partying to get on Noah's Ark when the rain came
Right now every popular MMO is literally the same thing - Retail WoW, ESO, FF14, GW2, LOTRO - the only different thing is the setting and the art style, they all play the same way - vast as an ocean, shallow as a puddle.
All you can do in them is quest, PvP, dungeons and craft. There is no means of alternative progression, there is no freedom to do what you want, there are no consequences for your actions.
They are like Pop music or superhero movies - you've seen one - you've seen them all.
The only people that are OK with the current state of MMOs are the ones that never played the old ones. I never played SWG until last year and without any previous experience with the game, I had to deal with its outdated graphics, clunky UI and other negativities, but despite that I saw one really amazing game that literally felt like a living, breathing world, something that none of the current popular MMOs are, because they are just single player games that require internet connection, no different than Genshin Impact.

And it is what players expect, they expect the game to be set up like WoW. The situation we are in is like players of the racing genre only expecting to play Grand Prix, no other style of racing game from Trucker to free roam cruising is allowed. For me ESO and Lotro were definitely worth playing and I think they still are but the genre is very generic in gameplay and that's why so many of us are bored with it. I am still not bored with solo rpg's, shooters and adventure games, all the other genre's I love, but MMOs struggle to maintain my attention. It is down to good guilds now, I learnt from BDO I won't stay in a MMO unless I am in a really good guild.

I've always wondered if he worked for them in some capacity...I have never seen such a die hard for a game, but if he likes it that much more power to him.....He was usually pretty civil about it though and I am surprised he got a temp ban.
Besides moving around the pin / tee placement both courses had the same 18 holes the entire time.
Sure, they both played other courses over the years, but they always returned to and supported the one the enjoyed the most.

Still you didn't play, again for reasons which mostly are on you, not that newer games with more challenge don't exist.

It is whatever one finds difficult.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
I don't even remember what he said as I didnt report him. I think he called me stupid or something. I find it funny when he loses his patience.
That also makes for a very ugly and uninviting argument as to why one should care about his baby, but if the goal is simply to make posters lesser than him, it's kind of smart in a way. I guess?

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
