First off, I absolutely despise level based games. They all end the same way....guild raids so one player can get that elite item. Which ultimately is pointless anyway because all level based games have a damage multiplier in them.
In skill based games, there's always room for improvement. Therefore solo players have some end-game content.
Despite that, I went into EQ2 with hopes for a great experience. I read the hype and reviews here. I was so convinced the game would be amazing that I bought the collector's edition (something I didnt even do for my favorite mmorpg swg).
The launch was nice, no servers crashing or rollbacks so that was impressive to me. However, the game got really stale after a week.
grouping - most groups i came across were very selfish. it was finish their quest and leave. even in games like coh where the players tend to be immature that never happened as much. In coh most would complete multiple group members quests in an evening. In EQ2 I constantly never finished quests because 3 members would drop as soon as they finished.
Also on grouping - too hardcore for fun. Im a bit hardcore too but these guys were over the top. There were no room for mistakes. So many times I watched a group boot someone if they made an error. Also communication was terrible. I'd ask a question and 95% of the time no response. they were either too busy or didnt care to respond.
zoning - coming from SWG, this was a huge shock. I had no problem with fixed apartments, however to zone it made it pointless. In SWG the whole point of a house was so someone could casually stop by and look at your cool loot. Also they were too expensive to maintain. No way could I pay the costs and have a life outside the game so I never was able to keep one past the first week.
vendors - again from SWG, I assumed eq2 devs would carry over the best successes from SWG and make vendors live npc we could hire and use to sell our goods. When I quit there was no such animal, although i read something about selling from your apt...bleh not the same. Without real in-game housing and real vendors, the crafting aspect of the game lost interest for me (and many others i knew who quickyl returned to swg)
quests - too spread out and time-consuming for one. I hated walking through 4 zones and back to make some dumb delivery just so i could get a bit of money. And it sometimes felt like I wasnt allowed to just go grind. Quests are nice and all but I didnt want to spend 100% of my time doing them. To me quests are a nice diversion but shouldnt be the entire focus of the game to level.
No central hub - the game really needed a cantina or type environment like swg to force peeps to gather. Someplace where one had to go to get healed. Or even like WoW's auction house. This would lead to more socialization, something the game sorely lacked. Otherwise the only time I chatted with someone was for 3 seconds in a group.
Graphics were amazing but Im an old-sshool gamer and still play games like Fallout 2 and Master of Orion 1 so they arent all-important to me. They should have focused more on gameplay and no zoning than graphics.
Ultimately it was a typical SOE product. Nice to look at but no heart and soul. I'd never go back.

~Warning Warning~ I HAVE NOT PLAYED EQ2 SINCE MAY 2005.
I followed the games development for a few years prior to its release, watched allot of great concepts and promises get canceled... I beta tested the game and still had high hopes for it.. I bought EQ2 the day it released, played with my girlfriend and a few friends. We hit level 50 about a month after its launch (always drains a players attitude about a game)
Hmm, where to start.. how about the starting cities!
In every game (not just mmo's) i love to explore. It always feels great to travel a long distance and stumble upon a new city. I especially love this aspect in MMO's, entering the town, speaking to all the NPCs, seeing new player characters, finding new quest..etc etc... it felt as if, i accomplished something!
In EQ2, you start off in either Qeynos or Freeport.. With a click of a button my High Elf was visiting Dwarves on my first day of gaming.. Sure they had Rivervale in the game, but with no option to bind or live there...
~Other various complaints about cities~ I was so hyped to finally purchase my new home in Qeynos harbor.. I was one of the first on my server. So i move my stuff in, rearrange it then search QH for a place to bind my character... no such luck... each time i died or used Call to Qeynos i was sent back to Castleview~~~ This is something i contemplated frequently in the game.. when I was rarely in Qeynos, other then getting Writs or putting some stupid crap in my house, there wasn't anything to do in the city... They could have atleast added some mini games, (casinos, horse shoes....something)
Harvesting is also another complaint... I spent endless hours upgrading my Templar and helping my guild get equipped... Like i said, i leveled up to 50 about a month after the game released.. So basically i harvested.. and harvested.. and harvested for a few months.... By the time the majority of my guild caught up to level 50, they all had rare crafted armor waiting for them. Then, SoE makes Ebons more common, makes Figwarts more common, so and so on.. My face was a bit red for being slapped but i could live with that... Then, i hear about something in development, basically all my time spent on harvesting was going to be a waste... Soon you would be able to add enchantments to your crafted armor.. Again i could live with that, i spent endless hours harvesting so we could raid.. but, it was another slap to the face, adding further insult to my previous injuries....
How about the so called armor appearance upgrades they where going to introduce? Only changes i witnessed was my ebon being bright funky red, then two days later it turned Blackish.. blackish/same graphic as all the other heavy armor level 40-50...
Ive played as a Cleric since my DnD days.. EQ2 was no exception... Let me just say, that i had 5 underwater breathing spells "some made me swim faster" etc... Very, very, very disappointed... (not to mention the fishbone earring had a underwater breathing effect)..Shame on you SoE.. anyone that mentions COMBAT REVAMP, maybe its a good thing your so forgiving, i for one, am not.. It took 8 months*well longer if you include development stages/complaints in beta* to introduce it to the public...
~~Illusionist-- had a pet that lasted 40ish seconds, a little white ball of light, that spamed misses and when it finally hit, did about 20 damage... This is a next generation MMO carrying the name everquest.. Id expect spell effects to be.. how shall i say it.. creative?
~~Froclocks... This sums up Eq2's marketing scheme.. The quest was suppose to be in at launch. Some moderators even went so far to say things like "you guys just are not searching hard enough".. Baby dragons/Collectors edition--- "Baby dragons will eventually grow up"... what? after DnL releases their game and you see how much people love to ride dragons and slip it into a patch...whatever..
-- I was going to continue on but ive decided not to. I can sum up my Eq2 playing experience as--disappointed.. I had such high expectations for this game and set myself up for failure.. Prior to Eq2's beta, the devs promised allot and failed to deliver..
--- All in all, the game was worth buying and playing. I had some great times and enjoyed allot of the features/ graphics in Eq2.. its nowhere near my favorite game of all time, but it was fun.. Although, I will never return to the game... EVER
This is interesting. Im currently playing EQ2 and notice many of the same aspects about the game. Quick question: If it is nowhere close to your favorite game, then, what is your favorite game?
Originally posted by Ranma13 Extermination quests: kill quests basically. Collection quests: you collect these objects by finding shining points on the ground (randomly spawned and placed) and 'collecting' them like you would harvest. You then examine them to add them to your collection. Once you've completed one entire collection, you can turn it in to a quest guy for a reward. The reward ranges from a decent piece of armor to just some simple coin. The idea was that you would find these points on the ground while running around the world and it would be something you can do while running regular quests, sort of like a distraction. More often than not though, these quests are missing certain rare items that you can't easily acquire and it starts to turn into a sort of trading card game except the cards don't do anything except fill up slots. Rescue quests: NPCs stand there and ask for you to help them. You kill the mobs around the NPC and they allow you to buy stuff from them, which is usually always crappy stuff you can get elsewhere. Out of 31 levels and doing every single quest I could complete, this is the only rescue quest I've come across. Racing quests: There's only 1. You run from place to place then do it again in a new zone. Don't know what the reward is since you have to be around level 50 to complete the last leg of it but it's pretty pointless. Exploration quests: Incredibly lame. You just go to a certain point and the quest log updates. There's usually nothing of interest to see and nothing to discover or find, the quest log just updates the moment you reach the target area. Assassination quests: typical kill quest with named mobs, nothing more. My gripe with the quests is that none of them are really engaging. It feels like you're running petty chores for the NPCs rather than questing and discovering the world and learning more about the lore. Sometimes, the quests are so bad at hinting you to the next step that you almost need to refer to a guide in order to find out what you have to do next. In 31 levels I haven't come across one quest that changes the world in some way or affects the game in some way besides just giving me quest count +1. It's like my actions have no consequence at all.
Can you name me one type of quest from another game that isn't represented in EQ2 that you DO find engaging?

Bleh, I really must salute you here remyburke... This is something I never thought of, because EVE has a horrible questing build. And, furthermore... Pirrg posts here because:
1. "He can"
2. <N/A> (insert reason here pirrg, cause you havent given one)
The basis for ANY GAME, is the will to play it, the will to make the game fun... The will people like Pirrg don't have when it comes to eq2. Becuase they are told by someone they really value, and henceforth their mind is made up, a prejudice, if you will. So when they get into a thread like this, (or forum for that matter) they only pay attention to the negative, because that prejudice is allready there. You couldn't change piirg's mind with anything short of pulling a gun on him. So he will continue to " Now that I read this, im definently NOT going to buy it NOW", as if he was before, it's like trying to convert a muslim.
Another issue that turned me off about EQ2 is the environment. Sure, it's realistic-looking, but it's quite bland. There's not that many trees around and the trees that are around look pretty lifeless. They gently sway in the wind but you can barely perceive the effect unless you stare intently at them. Also, there's not enough variation in the textures. A good example is in Antonica, climb up a griffon tower and look down across the land. You can easily make out how often the textures are repeated and how little variation there is. EQ2's graphics might be good but they're not very effective in conveying the sense of a fantasy world.
EQ2 is by no means a bad game, it is refined and one of the best traditional MMORPGs out there. However, I think that they did certain things wrong that makes the game not as enjoyable as it could be, such as long respawn timers, not enough mobs (like quests that have you kill 20 of a certain mob but there's only 5 of them around on a long respawn timer), boring quests, and bland textures and unimaginative zones.
Oh, and a word on the boring quests. I realize that most games fall under this category too, such as EVE Online, but considering that the MAJOR focus of EQ2 is questing, you'd think that they could put in more interesting quests than what's presented thus far. For example, in SWG, an example of a quest would be such as talk to a guy and he tells you that he lost his ship manifest and wants you to help him out because some customers are mad their shipment hasn't arrived yet. You go and collect the information he needs and it turns out that the shipment went missing at a certain spot. You fly out to space to investigate and pirates jump you. You kill them and find out that their main base is at a certain location and fly there and destroy the transports around it. You then find the shipment you need and return it to the guy and he gives you a reward and his customers are happy. That is an example of a good quest with a good motivation to go out there and kill stuff.
In EQ2, however, a typical quest is something like you talk to a guy and he says that he's in agony or pain or sorrow or whatever and wants you to kill x number of mobs for absolutely no reason. So you go and kill them and go back to the quest giver and he thanks you and that's it. How did it help him? How did it alleviate his pain or sorrow or whatever? These type of quests leave you feeling empty after you complete them and they dominate EQ2 by far. Hence why the quests are tedious and feel like a todo list rather than doing something worthwhile.

Well, I was around SOE during eq. Let me tell you something. EQ2 truly is EQ2. The devs said this would not be the same as EQ, "it will be different!!" they exclaimed. Yea, in all the wrong ways its different. Armor is bland, and all the same. Slow lvling, imo. Today's games are no longer about the grind. Grinds are boring, and EQ1&2 is all about that. Quest sucked. Sure there are a million, but they aren't worth my time. Of course, once I heard about this "revamp" that is SOE speak for nerfing anything that is cool about the game. I cancelled the day I heard of this "revamp". There wasn't any put in wasting anymore time into my toons. I was already losing interest by level 28, anyways. I hate EQ, because of the disparity between the haves and have-nots. EQ2 is going that same route. Sorry, but I'm a nobody in the greater scheme of things, and I will be damned if I'm gonna be a nobody in a game that I pay to play.

Maybe you haven't played in a while, or are just having a bad day, but in EQ2 there are quests just like that. The "Intriguing eye" quest is quite similar in many ways to that quest. EVERY single quest type is represented in EQ2, I think some people just have a selective memory about such things but that's human nature.
Wow too many fanboi's trolling this thread... Im happy someone has gained some level of enjoyment from EQ2 but do we really need your boring drivel every other post?
Anyway to the topic "Why did you leave EQ2"? I baught the game at release and really enjoyed the first few lvls 1-7. Man was I fooled..by 20 I could barely stomach even loging in, it seemed like I was at a rl job pfffft
Aside from the game simply not being fun the combat wheel and group shared debt irritated me beyond words. Anyway around this time WoW came out...I quickly ebayed my newly made 20 (top3 on server at the time) and made a quick 100$ hehehehehe. I guess i got the last laugh on SOE this time muhahahah. Thank god for blizzard, a.net and HL2 otherwise we all would be stuck playing craptastic mmorph's like EQ2/ffx.

1. "He can"
Hence why the quests are tedious and feel like a todo list rather than doing something worthwhile.
lol..you lvled too fast?
riiight

Why was my post deleted?
because you posted a quote of an individual who got their post deleted.

I'm about 99.99% sure that is why the MOD who deleted it did just that
