I want some pie. Oh yeah El, could you do me a favor and like when you update the origional post, mark the newest parts in red or something, so I don't have to read through the same stuff again?
Bull.

Hmm problem is I'm not just adding stuff I'm modifying things as I learn more about them..
I'll try But no promises.
Last night's experiences pretty much convinced me I'm not coming back to SWG. I'm going to keep plugging away at the free trial for a bit and I'll keep updating my review but SWG is no longer skill based *at all* and that was what I loved so much about it. So they've basically killed it for me.

Do you deny on these very forums you wrote the following after the dev's issued a public appology about the xp nerf?
think it's nice that they appologised.
Now if they'll kindly take all the jedi changes OUT of the new expansion and replace them with Permadeath and Jedi Saber Tef I might actually think about coming back.

Hrm... lets see a jedi starter class. That sounds like permadeath and saber tef to me... Sounds like you supported player bounties or at least jedi being attackable to players at any given time...

A Jedi Starter class sounds like perma death and saber tef? What? No it isn't! Permadeath means that when a jedi dies three times their character was WIPED back to 0/0/0/0 and had to re-grind from scratch. Sabre TEF is when a Jedi whips out a sabre they're AUTOMATICALLY flagged fully attackable by anyone in the area. A Jedi STARTER class merely means they've made it EASIER for people to be Jedi. The whole point of having them add permadeath and sabre tef was to make it HARDER on Jedi and make them more RARE. Are you really this clueless or do you just make stuff up as you go?
Neither of those have been added.
And, yes, it WAS nice that they appologised but you are quoting me out of context. It WAS nice that they appologised but I wasn't coming back just because they appologised. As a matter of fact I *still* haven't gone back. I'm playing on a FREE TRIAL Account just to see what the changes are like. And if you bothered reading the review instead of just knee-jerking you'd see that I have listed both positive things about the game and negative things about it.

El can you comment on two aspects: 1. SOE/LA are claiming that the NGE will bring Star Wars back into SWG. Have you experienced this? From reading your initial comments, I assume SOE/LA has done a great job at the introduction, but otherwise the SW content slackens. 2. The GCW. I think this ties into the first question, but PvP in general is something that I look for in an MMO. Does the GCW offer anything to fascilitate the GCW?
From El's and other reviews that I've read it appears that SOE/LA have gutted the uniqueness from SWG. Another question that I have is are you able to respect your character at any time still? In other words, if I'm tired of Bounty Hunter, can I still drop those skills and start working on Commando?
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
After trying the NGE myself for a few days ill say this.
Game is nice until you are about level 6 or so, after that it becomes a grind until you are level 30.
After that, there is absolutely no content. I repeat, you CANNOT level after 30. For characters at lvl 80 the only way to get xp is to buy the mustafar expansion, as stated by the devs themselves.
So dont bother with SWG, simply try the NGE trial then shelf it when youre done at the space station.
Edit: And people between the levels 30 and 80 are there because of the respec. The only way to level right now is to be CL 80 and go to mustafar. The devs made it like this intentionally.

1) Yes and no. The COMBAT feels VERY much more 'star warsy' and the initial quests and such do feel more star wars like. The missions you get from NPC's actually make a bit of sense in a star wars context now and they give more "go kill NPC" type missions than before. There are still a few 'go kill critters' missions but they're given in the context of 'these suckers broke out and are causing problems, go eliminate them'. So it feels a bit more star wars but the GRIND is definitely still there.
2) Haven't gotten far enough along in the trial to test PVP and I may not be able to test PVP at all since the trial keeps you on the station and I'm not willing to re-subscribe to test beyond the trial at this point. Right now from what I've seen in the trial they've utterly ruined the game for me.
3) No you cannot retrain at ALL. It is now a EQ/WOW clone in that regard. If you want to try another class you have to re-roll and start from scratch or start an alt on another server. This is now a CLASS/LEVEL system as opposed to a skill/profession system with levels tacked on. LEVEL is everything now. CLASS locks you in. You can't dabble, you can't re-train. Period.
So far the only improvements I've seen is the increased pace in combat. The better 'feel' to the game (star wars wise) and the missions from NPC's have improved (*in the trial area*). I can't speak to missions outside the trial but, from what I have heard, things on the 'normal' game haven't changed much other than pace of combat and the fact that the skill system is *gone*.
10 races 9 classes Level system, no skill system whatsoever. No *choice* as to what skills you get either. At X level you get X skill(s). Period, no variation. Due to this there will be no variation in what each player can do. If a player is a smuggler they're the same, skill wise, as every other smuggler. Same for every other profession. Matter of fact both EQ2 and WoW are MORE skill oriented than SWG now. In EQ2 you can choose to improve some or all your skills (or none), in WoW you can choose what skills you want to buy. In SWG you are now force fed skills and they never 'improve'. I was hoping they'd done something like KOTOR for the new skill system but no such luck.
The diversity has been ripped from SWG.

Re Number 3, yes it is possible to restart as a different profession without any repecs left. What was teh Anti-decay kit is now a profession restart kit. You use this and you can choose to be a different profession and you will be dropped down to level 1. These are tradeable so you can either wait till you get a 1 year vet reward or you can earn enough creds to buy one from somene else.
There is talk about talent skills or trees being added to add diversity (was stated in the Startics chat). How, what, when and if these are done isn't known yet.
The missions you get on the ground to level 30 are the same sorta style as the space station ones. These then continue again in ToOW. Obviously there's a big gap left between the ones to lvl 30 and the ToOW ones which are lvl 70-90ish. Hopefully the gap is filled, as thats alot of levels to move up just by killing things that give small amounts of XP (compared to before anyway).
To those that don't think it's fair that you have to buy ToOW to move up to 90 faster, think about this. Expansions are meant to expand the game and offer improvements, something people have complained SWG expansions haven't done since JTL. With ToOW, you get teh bonus of beign able to move up alot quicker then you could without it. WoW is doing this with their expansion, except I don't even think you can get the extra levels without the expansion (I haven't looked into it much, going by what others have told me)
I have played it since the start and I like the new changes, ofcourse they need to sort the bugs but its made the game fresh again.
All the crying babies that left the game I say good, you all had made your minds up before the new update came out and are using it as an excuse to leave SWG you wanted to leave anyway.
I say thanks for the update and it will bring more players to the game.

My POINT is that is was you that wanted jedi to be RARE and stated so much. YOU wanted a Jedi free server. You thought jedi where a major problem. Now Jedi are even more COMMON without any of the requistes you said needed to be in place for YOU to come back to the game. YOU KNEW BEFORE THE TRIAL those wheren't inplace. Now Jedi are a STARTER PROFESSION and you are THINKING of rejoining the game. That makes YOU a hypocrite.
I don't care about the "positive" and "negative" things. You and I dont get along because YOU insulted MY views of the CU when it came out. NOW you are pretending NOTHING occurred on why you left and refuse to state HONESTLY why you left. Instead you make it out like I have no clue. You are disengenuous to everyone here when you babble on about the NGE being at all tolerable for a game over 2 years old to be in THIS state. This state meaning buggy, 6 months from stability. 6 months from collision detection. 6 months till npc balance. 6 month to professional balance. 6 month at least till this game is ready for real release.
SOE again releases junk code with jedi all over and you know sit here and tell this community your ok with that? Even though you left over jedi and an xp nerf. Both of which are now WORSE THEN WHAT YOU LEFT OVER.

Lol, what's with SOE giving partial trials of their games? This is similar to the EQ2 trial. I think SOE would attract more players to the game by offering an unlimited trial for a period of time.
Well, that decides my thoughts on giving the trial a go.
Thanks El for the quick feedback!
Someone at LA or SOE's Marketing seriously needs to pimp slap the sales folks. I have no issues with requiring expansions for further level progression, but this is definitely the wrong time to be doing so for SWG. The community is in bad enough shape. If I were SOE/LA I'd create another 'Total Experience Package', with maybe ToOW available as a downloadable adventure pack for under $10. Give the NGE time to gain some legs, then start introducing expansions that do such things as raise the level cap. Thus far Blizzard seems to be doing the same with it's first expansion, but the community is no where near in bad as shape.
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
This is my first MMORPG; I started playing a month after launch. So it has been a little over 2 years now for me..
I LOVED the old system, sure it had its bugs... but to be honest... to me.. it seemed like the only people kicking up a fuss was the PVP crowd.. (Which I never did).. I never had a problem on the PVE side of things.
I had my Jedi before the first CU.. did the holos and what not... keep to my own guild.. Did PVE and loved every minute
With the new system Im 50/50 on it I like the fast style in combat but hate that you cant solo much anymore A level 80 melee Jedi can get his butt handed to him by a level 30 NPC with a simple gun.
There are more bugs now then the old system
BUT.. I feel it is a learning curve.. once everything is working . It might not be all that bad

Go to our forum, intrepid.galaxyforums.com . There's a lot of people trying to cope with the new mess, and have been sharing all the info they can get on it. The only place they have found that gives them reasonable XP is mustifar. They pointed out the dev post that said "If you want xp, buy ToOW."
Ain't that a kick in the nads.

So far, I have mixed feelings about it. I find making such a change in an existant game fundamentaly wrong from a business point of view, it alienates the existant gaming community and leads to lots of subscription cancellations. I understand how most players feel and I find their complaints valid.
On the other hand, it does have potential (or I'd think it has potential if I had any trust in the devs left). The new tutorial gave me a good Star Warsy feel. Though I find that meeting movie characters from so early on a bit ridiculous, the atmosphere is good. The station seems lively, is on-par with Star Wars style and the missions ain't bad either. The only real problem is that they get a bit tedious, as you must travel back and forth between the two space stations a lot.
The new combat system is interesting, at least for me. I'm a Station Access subscriber, therefore I prefer diversity instead of playing an EQ clone in space (which was close to what SWG became after CU, though I didn't mind much). It need a lot of tweaking and balancing, but it still is fun, fast-paced.
While there's a lot of complaints about the combat system, I find that one basic flaw in most sci-fi games is the lack of adventurous, blow-things-up, dodge-and-run action combat. In Anarchy Online, for instance, you just leave your character standing still while you execute nanos and weapon specials. The new combat system might have the potential for good sci-fi action. Shooting, running to cover, maybe throwing in a grenade or two, etc. The character should be constantly moving, adrenaline rushing every second, not just standing still and pressing buttons. Not that the old system didn't have its merits (I liked being able to prone, etc).
I've enjoyed doing the Legacy quest series, though all opponents are grey for me. The dialogs are fun and some locations well designed. Compared to some theme parks, it really is a huge improvement. Problem is I'm stuck at Jabba's Palace, as Jabba isn't very talkative and just threatens to feed me to the rancor.
The worst thing in SWG was spending a lot of time hunting animals (bols in Dant, etc). Not a very Star Warsy activity and very, very repetitive. Hopefully, they'll include even more quests or urban combat situations, facility infiltration and the like.
As far as professions are concerned, hopefully it will create a better diversity in game-play. Pre-NGE, the game had become a BH vs Jedi thing, the other professions had a far lower population. Still, I'm not sure at all if that's going to be solved, unless they really pay attention to other profs and include new fun activities. Will we ever see the so much promised smuggling missions and will they be more than just a courier service with a flashy name?
My biggest grudge is the Sneak ability of spies. Lasts only a very very short amount of time and you can't get in stealth mode if mobs are nearby. While the latter is reasonable and realistic, combined with the very short duration it makes stealth worthless. And I'd prefer if spies could disguise (much like in Matrix Online) in order to infiltrate enemy territory and actually spy. My greatest fear is that spies will become just assassins (high burst damage dealers) and nothing more.
So, I switched back to smuggling. I had originally chosen smuggling post-CU for their crowd control abilities, which doesn't exist anymore. Still, I liked them in combat and will prolly keep this. Another worry I had when respeccing was that I didn't see that much diversity among professions, although in FPS-style classes I didn't have many expectations.
As a final note, what SWG lacked the most was a Star Warsy experience, not a good combat system. Much of the gaming activity concentrated in activities, like hunting animals, that had no relevance to what you'd expect in a Star Wars enviroment. It is that direction in which the development of the game should focus on and the Rebel-Empire opposition, as well as more urban-style activities are the most important factors in this.

Well, I don't think I am gonna be comming back once my sub runs out. Not because of the NGE or anything, just because MMORPGs are pissing me off in general and I am getting bored of each and every one of them. I think I'll stick with my FPSers and RPGs like Oblivion. Until a really fun looking mmo comes out, I am not going back to any of the old ones.
Let me try this unbiased thing (these also I experienced, and some have been corroborated):
cons:
1). Ranged classes beat Jedi nearly everytime. Jedi are not balanced for combat, nor will they be in the near future, and this is "as intended" as per SWG Stratics HoC chat.
2). There is only one Legacy quest. While some may find working for a crime lord fun, try playing say a heroic character modeled after Luke. If you want to play a Good character, say a light side Jedi, then this line of quests feels very unsavory. It may fit for those who want to play a smuggler, or other nefarious beings.
3). Graphics have been 'thinned' out. More ailiasing, and more hard edges.
4). Preliminary investigations show that varying weapons have little to no variation in power-output. The same negligent effect appears with armor vs no armor, and many buffs.
5). No differntiating Jedi lightside from darkside. Yes, was always an issue.
6). Ranged NPCs can kite melee players, but Ranged players trying to kite melee npc and mobs get hit from 15 - 20 meters away.
7). To me, it does NOT feel more Star Warsy. To me the problem never was combat, but the fact that SOE visionaries failed to grasp the underlying myth of Star Wars. Mustafar to that end was a giant step foreward. Certain other content areas in the old game provided this as well. But there simply wasn't enough of the Military Industrial complex visible.
8). Despite what the OP says, there is no true dodging as you'd find in a true FPS. There is a 25% bonus to your defense if you're moving. The NPCs are still in RPG autolock mode, while players are in FPS mode. More precisely the hit detection is still determined at the NPC's gun, not at the bullet. Therefore, it is debatable whether moving does you any good because moving serves to decrease your own accuracy. Thus you still end up with a static firefight where both stand and fire.
9). Multiple mobs stacking ontop of each other causes problems without an autolock for players. This means if you have 3 grey cons attacking you with hp of say 6000, they effectively have the endurance of a single mob with hp of 18000.
Pros:
1) Quest/mission system. The idea behind it is solid, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
2). I like that my swoop travels faster now.
Finally:
If only they had taken all this time and effort of the NGE and placed into the Original SWG, you know more quests, the actual Profession changes and enhancements they talked about for months, it would have been better imo.

Its hilarious and sad at the same time, but the dev in question actually said that beside mustafar we could go grind nightsisters. Wasnt the whole point of the NGE to remove grinding? The game is absolutely barren of content as it has always been. In the past, 60% of the content was dabbling in professions and such. Now the game doesnt even have that.
Having said that, i still think the basics of the NGE is much better then what we had before. If only they would implement some content and NOT charge for it, id be a happy man. The PvP is absolutely fantastic right now. Best pvp ive ever experienced in any MMO. Ive had a ton of fights and every one of them were VERY close both when i won and lost. And group PvP is very fast and exciting, you have to stay active constantly.
_____________________ I am the flipside of the coin on which the troll and the fanboy are but one side.
just read a post about not being able to take bases down because they require professions NO LONGER IN THE GAME. wow nice planning for a project thats been worked on for a year.
And Turrents are now NPC's with a 120m range.
dammit after you get out of the very nice , very star wars tutorial ( yes it is both of those things ) the game is exactly like it was pre NGE except nothing is geared to the NGE yet. most of the quest rewards for certain entire quest lines do not exists yet as in not coded for the NGE.
I would be willing to wait 6 months for them to fix it .. but they said that about the CU .. fixes are coming fixes are comming ... and we got NGE , people who say wait need to remember THIS is the fix to CU this is the thing to correct the game from CU . that or they red names have been boldly lying to the entire player base on the forums.
either way im still looking for a way to like this game, maybe autolock and collision detection would help, being able to remap the entire command buttons would help, red names actually giving information instead of posting ... we are loking into options thread locked because there are 1739893 other threads asking this same question all with the same answer
this is properly a new game and should be marketed as such , offer refunds to people with prepaid accounts , but also offer rewrds if they stay. Admit that CU failed and as of now SWg is now a new and entirely reworked game. Alot of people would apprieciate that, and probably stay to work thru it. Replace your CSR staff , the trust of the community is gone, the current staff is known for nothing but outright lies and misdirection, thats hard to overcome when even new players see the forums for the 1st time, maybe try the AO way of player based CSR who are trained by SOE to do simple things.
people are patient when new games have bugs .. people are upset that a 2.5 year old game in its 3rd version still has bugs from the 1st version in it. There were alot of people tat supported the CU with wait and see .. look SOE is fixing things ... this new version not only soiled your rep SOE but those of your players who fought for you. They lost alot of creditbility to other players because with then NGE , SOE seems to have admitted CU was a failure , stabbing those supporters in the back.
Call this Star Wars : A time of War and remarket it as a new game , 100% new , with 100% new CSR , and offer those refunds and watch as people magically become patient with the 'new' star wars game out there.
Sorry its long ...
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Just have to add Elnator that, while sometimes you do get missions that are too difficult for you, there is a stated level requirement for each of them. It says what level you should be for them, not sure if you noticed or not as in your review it seemingly states there is no way to tell.
Also, what you choose is not what you are. You get a respec kit good for 10 respecs of your profession. Others have stated they don't work yet, but they worked for me. I respecced to Jedi and when I discovered they can't wear any armor at all, I again respecced to commando.
Last night I finally finished my tasks that Jabba wanted me to do, when it happened, up pops Jabba in the corner of the screen telling me I was free to go, I know I'm easy to please, but that was very kewl! I was rewarded with a new rifle that looks different than the n00by rifle I had and outdamaged even the crafted one I had bought a few weeks before the NGE came out. It was a long series of missions and quests and I enjoyed it immensely.
Then I was given the choice of seeking out the Imperial or Rebel recruiters: I chose Imperial as my PA is mostly Imperial and there's just too many Rebels. I like the underdog, lucky that I live in Vancouver as my hockey team is the perfect underdogs choice.
So off I went on another series of missions, which took me to cave systems and Tosche station (where Luke wanted to get those power converters, damn Uncle Owen!) and to moisture farms just like Uncle Ownes and even to Watto's robot shop from Episode 1 where I logged out last night.
I definitely know why the vets are so ticked off now, well one of the major reasons they may or may might ever come to find out. Respeccing in the NGE sucks. Learning a character you have played for over 2 years over again would just suck. Starting from scratch is damn fun. I have now seen more of Tatooine in 2 days than I ever did in 3 months, and that is the charm of the Star Wars universe that was totally lost on me, and I'm sure many others playing the old game.
The quests take you to all the wonderful places from Georgie boys imagination, and they are well worth visiting. The game went from hardcore technical to casual fun, and for that I do sympathize with those who underwent the trials and probable name calling and harrassment for sticking with the flawed game for so long.
For those vets who detest the new system, all I can say is start over, you might like it, I sure as hell am loving it. If not, then may the schwartz be with you.

As I said before, what is the gripe with this? So people who buy the expansion get a bonus for doing so, isn't this what an expansion is meant to do? Help you expand in the game? This is exactly what WoW is doing with their expansion, but as I said, you can't get the extra 10 levels with out buying the expansion in WoW. But of course, Blizzard can do no wrong

The gripe is the only reasonable way a person can reach lvl 90 is to buy the expansion. In wow you can reach your max lvl without an expansion. To state you don't need to max out in swg is absurd because you still have modifiers based on levels. So basically you buy the expansion to be a full templated character or grind hopelessly.
Remember the NGE stops at lvl 30. From there it becomes a massive grind through 40 more levels. It is something to keep in mind when you consider a new character. Once he/she/it is level 30 all that new questing/adventure ends.

================================
I am not a revisionist. Frankly it is you who seems to have forgotten recent history.
Hrm... lets see a jedi starter class.

El can you comment on two aspects:
Ico
Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned.

10 races
9 classes
Level system, no skill system whatsoever.

HYPOCRITE.
Show me, please, where I said I was 'ok' with that. I have stated repeatedly that I think making Jedi a starter class is stupid.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned.
Either way once DNL comes out Im gone anyway
PS --- I miss the 32 prefession choices...
Really? You're serious.. I havent tried to level, just been exploring. I am level 80 and without that piece of garbage known as ToOW its pointless to level anyhow?

* City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

Really? You're serious.. I havent tried to level, just been exploring. I am level 80 and without that piece of garbage known as ToOW its pointless to level anyhow?
Go to our forum, intrepid.galaxyforums.com . There's a lot of people trying to cope with the new mess, and have been sharing all the info they can get on it. The only place they have found that gives them reasonable XP is mustifar. They pointed out the dev post that said "If you want xp, buy ToOW."
Ain't that a kick in the nads.
And group PvP is very fast and exciting, you have to stay active constantly.

just read a post about not being able to take bases down because they require professions NO LONGER IN THE GAME. wow nice planning for a project thats been worked on for a year.
