Um...have you ever actually seen EVE's graphics? Instead of automatically trashing EVE because it's "older" as far as MMO's go, how about taking a look at the game's graphics? Here are a few helpful links:
Now, if you actually watch those vids instead of slamming the game without actually having anything to back it up, then you'll understand why it won Best Graphics.
Until such a time as you DL those vids and actually see what the game looks like, anything you say is of no value as it has no basis in experience.
Have a nice day.

P.S. BTW, everything in those vids comes from fraps of the actual in-game graphics.

As for the graphics, despite the fact that it's an older game the graphics still blow me away. For proof, check the link that was previously posted to the official game trailer - all of those graphics are from gameplay capture footage. In addition, there are some wicked player-made videos, such as:
Wow these are two of the best vids ever thanks for the links.
If you give EvE-Online a searous try you will see why it pwened this award event.
EvE is truely a player driven game where the player corps can change the face of the map.
As for the 30 jump runs I keep reading about I reply with this. In one year of playing I can count the number of 30+ jump trips I have made on my fingers. They are few and far between, unless you are a trader, and normally their is a really good reason for doing that 30+ jump trip such as war or joinning a new corp.
By the way one of the ways you can tell that EvE has an advance community is in how quickly 200 people can go from doing their own thing to become one fleet ready to defend or attack. Last night it took just under one hour to get 160 people to form up. I have played WoW and getting 160 people togeather in under 60min just doesnt happen. Hell guilds have a hard time getting 40 people togeather with one weeks notice. Tho I guess it helps when the size of the allince is 2539 players strong.
The only way to win a vote like this one (especially where WoW postings are 5x as many as EVE postings) is for the people that are occupied with WoW acknowledge the superiority of EVE in this many fields - even though the game as such may not be for them. It crystallizes that this vote is not about who has the most subscribers, but that the readers of mmorpg.com generally have the ability to reflect on things outside their own little bubble.
I'd like to congratulate CCP on receiving all the awards they got, and especially the one for the best company. CCP is a truly unique developer, publicly embracing the games that inspired EVE - they have on a number of occasions praised both UO and the old Elite - which is particularly satisfying to me.
CCP is all about respect, not only for us - their customers - but what they like and appreciate. A company in such fierce competition praising UO, which is one of its competitors, speaks VOLUMES about the sincerity and enthusiasm for the mmorpg genre.
Bottom line(s): 1. Congratulations EVE on its four win sweep! 2. Congratulations WoW on the PvE victory, truly deserved. 3. Congratulations SoR on best story (personally I voted for AO, but it was a close call). 4. Congratulations DDO for being the most anticipated. I suspect Turbine will foul this one up, but we'll see.
Anyone who read last months issue of PCgamer US, should know why eve is the best mmo out there. And as far as graphics, sure it may not have the highest poly count and use the coolest things, but the game itself, its architecture, the artwork, the explosions and in space flight are all incredibly beautiful. It takes the void of space and turns it into something thats more full of life than anything in wow.

We don't mind people not liking it. (Well, I don't at any rate.) It's when people go 'whine whine well it suxxor anyways1!1' and start slagging the players (ie, us) off as well that we get annoyed. So Eve isn't your thing. So what? Just keep nice about it and most of us won't care. But before you start with the 'nerd' stuff it might be a good idea to consider how much time you spend on mmo's =/
I have seen the vids(and frankly, not the best choices you could have made, IMHO) and I stand by my comment: very pretty pylons moving aginst a black background...did you notice they dont get very close in any of those? Just because the graphics don't have the highest poly/particle count doesn't mean they can't be good. There's a differents between best graphics technology and best graphics. The first is based on poly count and particle density, and the second is based on the overall effect that the graphics produce. Yes, Everquest 2 probably deserves best for graphics technology, but when everything comes together, I'd have to say EVE's graphics equal or exceed those of EQ 2.
(If you really want to get into it, I could cite how EQ 2's character graphics tend to follow the old "plastic" cliche - the characters look like they're made of plastic and not flesh and bone, among other things.)
-Wrayeth "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!"
To all who keep whining about results. It's called Reader's Choice Award and not <your name> Choice Award. How about getting more people from your mmorpgs to parcipate in community here and so mmorpg.com get more publicity instead whining about something that is result of a lot of mmorpg.com readers are also eve fans?
Posters who are surprise because they think the vote was popular contest. Well all i can say to you is SURPRISE! Now come back to reality and realize that ofcourse most people are going to vote their favorite mmorpg.
Oh and some of these bitter post in this thread are just funny. Could almost think they lost something very valuable in real life and are seeking for justice.
For those who were asking, EVE-Online has a playerbase of 100,000 accounts. About 80,000 paying subscriptions and the rest free trials. That's a mere 2% of WoW's population, yet they still won by a decent margin.
Enough said. If you want to know why, play the game and talk to people who are playing it. If it's your kind of game, you'll have a hard time logging out. If not, you'll run screaming back to WoW or some other game.

There is no way EVE graphics are even in the same category...but well...if someone say that Poopy from GU Comics is the best draw Woody made, he have a right to.
But EQ2 graphics are simply outstanding.
i play eve and eq 2
eq2 have good graphics but you CANT PLAY WITH medium GRAPHICS i havd AMD 64 3500+ 2 GBram and a Gforce 6800 GT and i play at the lowest graphics.. the same as EQ 1 ((
Played EVE for almost a year, and had to stop after that due to one and only major flaw of this game - it takes TIME. If you're not carefull enough it can suck you in for good influencing your real life like no other game i heard of. It was a very hard decision to make - to quit the game and after a year i still miss it and even i try to play other MMO's, nothing can compare
Of course World of Warcraft is a more popular game.
They've spent millions advertising it.
The same reason why everyone thinks ipods are the greatest thing since sliced bread when there are 900 other mp3 players that do a much better job for a much cheaper price.
You've all been conned - play something that you have never heard of instead.
Eve has had very little advertising, hardly anyone knows about it, and the people who play it play it for the simple reason that it is really really really good, and almost completely player driven.
As well as EVE I have played GW, Daoc and FFXI and you can bet your life you wont catch me trying WoW or DDO. Eve is the only one with any longevity.

Clearly this is a flame war that is going to run and run. No vote can be totally accurate and noone is going to pretend that EVE is more popular than many games out there. What people should be asking themselves is why does EVE inspire such loyalty amongst its players? The truth is out there for you to discover, there is a 14 day free trial that I would recommend you take advantage of. If you don't like the game, no hard feelings.
I think EVE is a fine game...just dont blow smoke up my ass and tell me it is the wind...I dont believe that EVE won best graphics because its graphics are all that great, but because there are a leigon of fanbois for the game on this site...if the graphics looked like the Rule in Hell, it still would have won...if eve had any significant pve element, it would have won that as well(assuming they could have bullied their way into the vote the way they did in pvp). As for the guy who said I shouldnt be surprised...well, i was...I thought these self-proclaimed 'mature' gamers would give a objective opinion...clearly, I was wrong

Any game that is largely ABOUT pvp should not have NEEDED to bully its way in. And that was by eve players being proactive- just like the eve players who were proactive and voted as well
Well I must say that I used to play EvE a while ago. However Im not patient enough for that game hehe. But that doesent stop me from saying that EvE is probably the best mmo I have ever played. I know it sounds weird but thats the mere fact.
If you want in depth, good graphics, total freedom, no grind. Thats EvE
I just wish, O' I wish I could love that game
So now Im stuck with WoW......... with high hopes that someday, somewhere there will be a incredible mmo released by some geniouses.
Until then, I vote for EvE as the best game ever played!
EVE is definitly not for everyone. I have played it, and love it. I currently don't play it but that doesn't mean I hate it, I just don't have the time to play any MMORPG right now.
As far as the graphics, whoever said EQ2 has the best graphics is hugely mistaken. EQ2 can't run with the graphics set on very high on almost everyone's computer, especially in a populated area or in a town. I like EQ2, but the graphics are not as good as EVE's. When I first stepped into EVE it opened my mind. It looked soo real, the backgrounds are amazing. It feels like your actually in space, very immersive and surreal experience for me. The graphics and tone of EVE have an attitude that is just so admirable and amazing. So granted EQ2 can push the poly count it can not open up your mind and immerse you in the beauty of EVE.
Most of my friends won't even try EVE cuz they have watched me play the trial. Honestly, I thought the trial was good but not great. It wasn't until I actually purchased the game, got involved with a good player corp and did some pvp that I was solidified that it was the best mmorpg out now. My favorite MMORPG would be Asheron's Call 2 but since Turbine killed it the votes might be a little non-existent (game doesn't exist anymore).
Gratz to EVE, it's better than WoW hands down. The possibilities are amazing, there are people making money in EVE off of real corp's ingame. It's just downright so indepth and life-consuming, gotta love it. Just cuz WoW has soo many subscribers mean's nothing. I like WoW, but it's glitchy, easy, boring, and repetitive. If your going to be such a noob game atleast make it fun.
Any game that is largely ABOUT pvp should not have NEEDED to bully its way in. And that was by eve players being proactive- just like the eve players who were proactive and voted as well
Err.. i didnt understand in first place why wasnt EvE mentioned in best pvp game category and im happy they corrected that obvious mistake.
Eve is a 2 part game. If you like it safe or 99% safe, you stay in high security systems where Concord ( kinda of a law enforcement force npc controlled ) will kill whoever tries to attack you.
If you like your adrenalin pumping, youll move to low security systems or join a corp ( Guild ) and war in either high security or low security systems.
EvE has an awesome PvP system. First if you get killed.. you REALLY loose your ship, your cargo your weapons, and if you get podded you REALLY loose your valuable implants etc.. you might even loose skillpoints ( bit like experience ) permanently if your clone is not properly updated.
This makes PvP quite rewarding for the killer since he/she will be able to salvage the ship components that survived the destruction.. and quite devastating for the killed player in some cases. Overall makes PvP an adrenalin pumping and addictive experience that will hook you up.
Wow that's so awesome, congrats to the people at CCP, they care about their game and have put some serious quality work into Eve, it's fantastic to see that it's doing well for them.
I'm also so proud to see Ryzom up there, a well deserved win for Best Story.
Originally posted by dawn The fact DDO won most anticipated just shows how little people know about some of the games coming up. I would have gone with age of conan myself... Don't get your hopes up for DDO.
Personally not surprised that EVE did so well. Way to go CCP! You guys are awesome and put so much love in work into this game. You deserve top honors for what you do!!
