SWG is a pretty big game too with 12 different planets, two of which have many instances and 13 different space zones.  Each planets is around 16km x16km and I *think* space zones are 16kmx16kmx16km.  That is quite a number of places that people can hang out in.

However, after reading Everquest II's producers letter, I wouldn't be surprised now if there are server merges with SWG because of the above.  Despite having a larger population then SWG, EQII is already getting server merges in the next few months due to the above "problem" I mentioned.

This is why i don't get why people think SWG will die anytime soon , All they have to do is merge servers which i would bet money on is in the works . No game ends before atleast having a server merge somewhere along the line .

Normally I'd agree here. Any other mmorpg, if its failing just merge servers and cut staff. Let the game run on fumes and make as much as you can.

However the license SOE pays Lucasarts is quite expensive. Its been reported to be 10 million a year.

With all the crap "SS-OE" and their 'smooth' talkers have been throwing out, I question even the most formal of documents which has SOE writen anywhere in it. Just beacuse it says "the results are shared between LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment" doesn't mean it will happen. And in hopes to all the morans who've been making the genious desisions with the SWG game, I call your attention to an old song from M*A*S*H that I really hope you take the advise within it:

Through early morning fog I see

I realize and I can see...

    [Refrain]:
    That suicide is painless
    It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

    [Refrain]

The game of life is hard to play
    I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.

    [Refrain]

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger, watch it grin, but...

    [Refrain]

A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
"is it to be or not to be"
and I replied "oh why ask me?"

    'Cause suicide is painless

Oh, in an odd form of creativeness, I've rewritten the song from my last post into a more fitting one. I call it Their Suicide is Painless:

Through early morning tears I see
visions of things that shall not be
the pains they have bestowed in me
I realize now and I can see...

    Their suicide I pray for
I'd tally up and keep the sqore
I hope that they will take what I emplore

I tried to find a way to make
    all the little joys relate
    without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's to late, and...

The game of SWG is a waist to play
    It's lost all purpose anyway
The losing patch the devs did lay
so this is all I have to say.

    That suicide is painless
    It'd bring on better changes
but they'd never do such a thing to please.

The sword of lies has pearced our skins
It never hurts when it begins
But as it worked its way on in
The pain grew stronger, as devs did grin

    Their suicide I pray for
I'd tally up and keep the sqore
but I hope their CEO will die from a disease

A despret man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
"is this game dead or is it me?"
and I replied "how could it not be?"

    'Cause everything's now hopeless
and it'd brings on better changes
if the devs should die from a famin of fleas.
...and you can wish on them the same if you please.

It's not the best, but I feel that it gets the point across. Think of the toon as you read it, enjoyimage

I see at this point four possibilities (my speculation, not from any source):

    1. They announce reversion to pre-CU on all servers, to publish 14.1 (last pre-CU publish), and set up a respec system where a CL90 can pick any 250 skill template. Crafters and entertainers could pick any crafter or entertainer template.

-Elder Jedi would be able to respec into a full Jedi template, FRS would be turned on.

-Respec Jedi that were CL90 would be able to choose their 6 FS lines, and would be at the Mellichae quest, and be able to put their remaining SP's in non-Jedi skills.

-They hotfix in the ability to do multipassenger vehicles and other things like that added since Pub 14.

-They hotfix in the quests, such as the Legacy, and revamp the tutorial to fit the pre-CU system. Quests would still give XP.

    2. They do something similar to #1 with the CU system. I see this as the least likely scenario. Most people who want one of the older systems wants pre-CU.

    3. They announce a MASSIVE revamp of the NGE system, adding back in many elements of both previous systems, such as skill trees and many deleted professions.

    4. They add 2-3 Publish 14.1 (pre-CU servers) on an "as is" basis with minimal development to run alongside NGE servers (which would receive a massive revamp as per #3 with hopes of eventually attracting players from the classic servers).

I actually think #3 is the MOST likely. #4 is also quite likely.

Definately something major is afoot. NGE is a failure if the idea was to gain more subs, 3 months in, that is definate.

They need to do something drastic.

thoughts on server merge and swg...

umm ab out your player city mister mayor, we realize that you spent alot of credits and got people to come to your player city to build it up to a point where you have a shuttle, but we are goign to do a server merge and all player cities are going to be deleted. refund iof invested credits? no,  can not do this as it would upset the crafters that had all of thier resources turned to junk in the CU and NGE.

thoughts on why in the world people would want to hang out in theed or cnet....

socialization? I know a fair number of people that jsut liked to hang out in the cantinas after a run and talk and be with people in a non combat mode, guess that is out the windows with NGE too.

Now one thing I have noticed is I think something big is going to happen because of what is happening with SOE.  The delay of publish 27 and the producer letter is part of this but also the non-release of anything related to the NGE, such as the Prima Game guides which explain the different features of the game and skills, city maps, etc. When I went to buy the one that I have which was for the Total Experience is the last one I have seen.  Before they would come out with different expansions.  There was none that came out with TOOW nor was there one with the NGE.  It could be because Prima knows something is up and they are only releasing the old books now.  I noticed more of the guidebooks for JTL than any of the others.

    Just an observation of mine.

I wouldnt return to SWG either... no matter what combat system. The complete world design is totally boring and unstarwarsy imo... But i would sure try out SWG 2 :) But dont keep your hopes too high ppl.. there is also a bunch of ppl that like the NGE.
  • bareshdracobareshdraco Member Posts: 54

Regardless of the rumors, the following is true. Nothing in the world we speculate will ever change it.

Star Wars Galaxies died the minute they re-wrote it and put out the NGE. Regardless of the current server populations and pre-cu / post-cu populations, they have created a competely new game that does not contain any of the elements that made SWG great.

    These elements are:
A kick ass crafting system where players needed crafters. Without them, armour, weapons, vehicles, clothing, med resources and food were non-existent, other than the crappy cdef or hunting knife you started with. Occasionally looted clothing and weapons were no match for the goods crafted by players. NGE has destroyed this element of the game by removing decay and granting adequate armour to begin with, then quality looted armour from NPCs.

An awesome range of professions and the ability to constantly change your 'toon.' How many other games offer 30+ professions, the ability to drop a whole profession and try a new one without the need for a new character. Also, with image designers it was relatively easy to completely change the look of your 'toon' . The only need for a new 'toon' was if you wanted to be a different race. NGE has killed this. You are now stuck with one profession, your choice of professions has been cut down by over 66%. And lets face it, 60% or more of people are choosing jedi as a starting prof, which is pretty boring.

Large scale PVP. It was common place to see 50 - 200 people pvp wars occuring on most servers before the NGE. This was good for the economy, great fun to participate in or just fun to watch if you are not a pvp'er. More importantly it led to real fun and rivalry between large guilds. (Admittedly the 90% resist armour and CM mind poison became a significant factor and ruined the PVP side before the CU, but this was something that could have been fixed easily without re-writing the game). NGE, at least in the few weeks I played it had no PVP, by all accounts, tiny populations and those, from my reading and discussions, seem more interested in the instanced quests. The game now seems to be more about grinding to reach CL90 than it ever was pre-NGE. Before it was a smaller number trying to unlock jedi who spent all there time grinding. Now it seems like everyone spends time grinding and not exploring.

Fun. It seems that the NGE is only fun for about 3 days, then most get bored with it. Again, this is only based on people I know who have bought it, and quit before the end of the trial, and what I have read on the forums.

All in all, SWG is dead. The imposter they are marketing as SWG is in fact SWG2 in all but name. Its like taking Green Day, sacking all of the band members, replacing them with 3 nobodies off the street and sending them on a greatest hits tour. Everyone knows that its not really Green Day, but some fans would still go see the shows just because of the name. Thats what has happened here. They ripped the guts out of SWG and replaced it with a piss poor shell of a game hoping that the name, rather than the content would appeal to the masses.

if LA/SOE dont bring back pre-cu its all good. i know a group of people makeing a Private Pre-cu Server as we speak. and when it goes life 5X exp for 2 months!!! with hard to become jedi... Force Ranking!!! space exp! and everything!!!

so if they dont.. they dont i play pre-cu one way or another

Trust me.........SWG IS DEAD!!!!! I cant say that for all servers but if they are anything like bloodfin they are dead. I have played since day 1 and know what Im talkin about. The theory that "players dont need to go to big cities anymore" is total bullshit. There are a ton of big cities in swg but there were only 3 that were vastly popular, Coronet, Theed, and Bestine. People went to these cities for buffs and such, but for most of all, a place to see what was happening, a place where they could buy what they needed, or maybe a little pvp.

Today these 3 "big" cities are deserted. You may see 5-10 people in Coronet when 12 months ago you would see between 50-100 at any given time. The MO on Dant would be so crowded you couldnt even get into the cantina. Theed was owned by the imperials. It was the perfect place for pvp because of all the open space and again, was a place to go for anything you needed. Even after JTL came out it didnt hurt the population.

Today I travel to these fine cities and they are all ghost towns. I travel to player cities (except the ones Im banned from :) ) and they are even worse. The only reason why most player cities are still there is because the maintenance for houses is taken out of players bank accounts. The 2 biggest guilds on the server, Axis and Fight are long gone.

As I said in previous posts, SOE/LA is gonna have to do something quick to keep swg alive. As for now its on life support with no hope in sight.

Unfortunately because of resource spawns and several other little nuiances that seperated each server from the next they couldnt merge servers. Not to mention cities and everythign else. In EQ2 player housing is instanced and independant of actual physical location, no so with swg. If server mergers were an option they would have done it months ago

I will say I love this thread if even all it does is make me hope that there will be a pre-cu server (official or not).

Obviously you don't know "what you're talking about".
There are a ton of big cities in swg but there were only 3 that were vastly popular, Coronet,
As stated: Prior to JtL you could get to more planets from Corellia than any other planet. The Hospital, Bank, and Cantina were close together, and there was housing close to the Starport. THIS made Coronet boom.  Especially when shuttle times were 10minutes. Since most of the people left from here, Doctors and entertainers came here.
Theed, and Bestine. People went to these cities for buffs and such, but for most of all, a place to see what was happening,
Huh?!? I never went to a city to "see what was happening". If I was there, I needed a buff, wounds healed or BF healed.
a place where they could buy what they needed,
Right, because they didn't have the galaxy wide vendor search. You had to go from shop to shop looking for what you wanted. That meant shop owners had to have prime real estate, like Coronet, where everyone was going for buffs and travel.  With the Galaxy wide vendor search, it didn't matter where your shop was, people would find what you were selling and could get a waypoint right to it. Is this starting to make sense to you now?
    or maybe a little pvp.
The only reason PvP broke up was because everyone was congrating there for buffs and travel. Most of the PvP was done at player cities.
Today these 3 "big" cities are deserted. You may see 5-10 people in Coronet when 12 months ago you would see between 50-100 at any given time.
Right, becasue THERE IS NO REASON TO GO TO CORONET
The MO on Dant would be so crowded you couldnt even get into the cantina.
Right because as you were leveling up, you could get XP at MO. Now you can't. No reason to go to MO anymore either.
Theed was owned by the imperials. It was the perfect place for pvp because of all the open space and again, was a place to go for anything you needed. Even after JTL came out it didnt hurt the population.
JtL KILLED the population in Theed on every other server (not sure which one you were on). The ONLY reason Theed was popular was there was no wait time on the shuttles.
And as I've said repeatedly. I'm not saying the game hasn't lost players, I'm only saying it's an ridiculous argument to say that since Coronet is empty there are no people playing
As I said in previous posts, SOE/LA is gonna have to do something quick to keep swg alive. As for now its on life support with no hope in sight.

Okay, can someone who has kept track of this thread from the start, please give me a rundown of any worthwhile drama to know about? If these rumours are true, i would be quite annoyed actually because eventhough S.O.E/LA have screwed up, they still manage to get a whole lot of new content out each month. I can't say the same about NCsoft (if the rumour is true) with CoH/CoV from my time playing them. Also, i am about to subscribe to the station all access pass thing as i have EQ2, SWG,MxO and planetside, sounds like a right bargain for me but without SWG, it would feel pointless.

So can someone please give me a run down on the authenticity of the OPs claims, thanks :).

You can choose to believe it if you like (and any other of the many rumours), but it's like reading horoscopes :p

I think the main intention is to try and scare people from playing the game

Personally I would wait. At least until they push the next publish to test. There's way too much going around good and bad that is just plain unproveable.

But then again.. it is only six bucks difference.

But they are either all-in or they are going to fold very soon.

And Obriak.. We don't need to scare anyone off SWG.. they've done a stellar job themselves.
