SWG never had a chance to mature. I can only imagine the state of the game had they actually attempted to finish it instead of milking more money out of subscribers with buggy expansions. Why use man hours to finish something when they can just use those hours to make something else for you to buy?
/sigh
I dont take it as a flame buddy. Infact, i agree with you. They SHOULD have worked on the core game instead of pumping out expansions and they should have polished the game more before releasing it to the public, theres alot of things they should have done. The game was unfinished and mostly still is. But in retrospect, the devs have never ever worked this hard with swg. It seems like they are finally interested in their own game again.

Originally posted by kefkah Marking on my calendar as this being the one day where I agree with pirrg on a few things. However, the title is where I would like to point a few things out. Just Give It Some Time. SOE coined this phrase a few years back - they may own the rights to it as it is their unofficial motto. This give it some more TIME concept may well have worked back in the day when there was slim mmorpg pickings but we are standing at the advent of what may well be the highest point of the mmorpg era. Arguably, after this round - everything may well be in decline. At any rate, in the face of all of this upcoming competition - there isn't room for extended forgiveness for near beta play by the players. SOE may have the wallets to keep this game under development without the numbers but that won't cut it when other games start rising on the charts. Despite the rumors - there are a finite number of players. One of SOE's grievous sins was to ignore that word of mouth is the best advertising in this market. Changing midstream at the expense of vets and their subscriptions left this game with a very bad black eye. Worse still, allowing THIS much TIME to pass to make the replacement system enjoyable. Worse still, they are asking the lot of us for "more time". While the WoWs and the EVEs shatter records and expand into new frontiers all the while keeping their player base mostly intact - SWG is using thread and needle to replace appendages. I will agree that they are trying to improve things but I think it is too little too late. They may well end up with a great game in the end - but that is the problem. It will be the end as it will be outmoded, antiquated and gone the way of the elder games. TIME is valuable and precious to each of us here. There are other companies and games that seem to appreciate my TIME more than SOE does as they voted me obsolete and expendable. So in the end, the only TIME I am willing to give them is the time I spend here hoping for a miracle all the while waiting on a replacement.
Well, that entire post boils down to this sentance "...I will agree that they are trying to improve things but I think it is too little too late."
That is your opinion. Personally i couldnt disagree more. SWG is timeless. Its never too late for SWG. Sure there are a plethora of different mmorpgs to chose from, and by the time the NGE is "finished" there will be even more. But as long as SWG is the only star wars mmo on the market, it will keep my attention. I mean its not like us star wars fans have other options now is there. If i just wanted to play any mmo i would probably have gone for something else, but i want to play a star wars mmo, and thats that.

And as to your response - you are willing to wait because it bears the star wars logo and is in the star war setting. These things make you happy and will allow you to suffer through arguably the most problematic and mishandled mmo in history. Such devotion is admirable but such a choice is a personal one. I for one believe in avoiding restaurants that don't have their act together, avoid movies that were rushed to final cut and certainly avoid playing a game that would so willing disaffect its established playerbase as well as have a history of pushing bug riddled updates and publishes onto its already leary paying public.
Heck, though pirrg, you know - I have been following your advice all along. I have given them some time. After the CU rolled out having been funded on my dime, I gave them time. I just chose to do it in a way I found more fitting and expressive of my opinion of the matter. I stopped paying them and gave them all the time they wanted. When the day comes that they get their act together and they publish a entertaining game that is in a somewhat finished state - then I will consider giving them back my money. Until then, I will give them time.

Sorry mate, ill elaborate. What i meant was that most of your post was correct and factual besides that last sentance, which was an opinion. I might have misused the phrase "boils down to" as english isnt my native language and for that i apologize profusely. It was a very well written post and i agree with most of it, just not the part where you stated that SWG will be obsolete due to the release of newer mmo's, and that what the devs are doing now is too little too late.

But what if french onion soup is your favourite dish and the only restaurant in the world that serves it has a rather incompitent staff that are showing hints of improvement? If my soup had a bug in it i would just take it out and squash it and continue to enjoy my soup rather then make an online petition to have the chef guillotined. Thats just how i am.
Heck, though pirrg, you know - I have been following your advice all along. I have given them some time. After the CU rolled out having been funded on my dime, I gave them time. That is fine mate and i would recommend everyone else on this forum who are unhappy to do the very same. If you dont like it, simply dont play it. Contrary to what some people on this forum believe the devs ARE getting their act together and the ammount of publishes and updates for the game in the past few months should be a testiment to that.

Ugh, in retrospect, maybe that wasnt such a smart thing to say. I shouldnt generalize and for that i apologize. Its just that i remember the jedi forums back when the devs announced the NGE. I was afraid that the world would explode due to a chain reaction starting on the swg jedi forum.
On a completely unrelated note, didnt you say you were playing swg a while back azhrarn?

Since my accounts magically re-opened. I'm going to give SWG a try. Going to do my best to approach this open minded even though I hate SOE with ever fiber of my body. For MORE than just what they did to SWG.
I'm going to see if I can find anything personally redeeming. Now, the operative word is try. Not sure if I'll pull it off but I'll try and see this with an open mind or as open as I can manage. :P
I won't bore everyone here with yet another review of what I find but I may post something small, an overview and if others want to know more they'll ask I'm sure.
Personally I don't have an issue with the NGE likers. I do have issues with the fanbois who spout BS with nothing to back it up. But Pirrg and Obraik have always been civil (as far as I've seen) and I choose not to hate on people who can carry on a decent conversation. In a way I think I'm checking out SWG again because of them. Because I want to try and see what they see. Probably won't happen as we all see things from different perspectives.

Thats very good mate. As long as you keep an open mind and live in the present rather then the past i think you will be pleasantly surprised by what the NGE has to offer.
In the past i would roll my eyes at "publish previews", but nowadays, i find that all i have to do is wait a couple of weeks and voila, the publish hits TC.

So, an "open mind" means I should give up what I liked about the game? That you have an implied definition of an open mind, is , unfortunate. It is equally unfortunate, but true that Publish 29 does not restore a number of things that I want and others want in the game:
1. A player developed ecomony 2. Crafters for said economy 3. The UI still is too fast for many people to play 4. More diversity that encourages player creative in character design
And many others. So again, I have an open mind as to how SOE might want to present the features. But, these features need to be restored. So, the game's simpler mechanics may appeal some, but others will never accept it.
As a side note, what exactly constitutes "improvement"... what analytical techniques are you using to ascertain that the game has, in fact, improved?

lots of people love star wars.
lots of people love the variety and choices swg USED to have. where you could become anything, get bored, become something totally different.
like my dancer/entertainer, who became a CH, then a smuggler, then a bh, then some sort of commando-ish creation, then somewhere was a BE/CH, then a master ranger, and um, lord, i forget what all else.

They can't churn out the kind of content you want faster than you can consume it.
You being limited more by your attitude than by the changes to the game. There is just as much to do other than quests now as there was Pre-NGE, aside form those abilities specific to professions removed from the game.
The "richness" is still there, if a borked combat system all of the sudden causes you to ignore it, that's a different matter.
-d
what richness do you allude to? i can no longer have a single character which can learn/unlearn any and all professions in the game.
if i pick their crafter... can i also train my weapon of preference to defend myself? can i go with my non-combat theme and be a droid crafter that also commands animals, thusly i am a little general (especially when you add in faction pets)? do they still have theme planets? are you able to solo them (with the right set up)? or is it now forcing you to group with these other predefined classes so that you have a tank, healer, mage and rogue in each party?
do elaborate upon the richness please.

or maybe 13 year olds/teens like the name of star wars, and at that age, you're not really looking for much other than a killkillkill game? versus someone a tad older, is looking for actual content, and meat, in the game. like a player-run economy, stimulated by the plethora of player created devices, ALL of which you COULD create if you so desired and took the time to skill up. maybe non teens enjoy having player run cities (even with a politician class), where you can progress in said class and grow your city (along with your guild).
just pointing out a couple of things that the average teen (or 13 yr old) wouldn't care the first whit about. whereas a mindless shoot-em-up game, complete with no brainer classes to level, is um, well, what they WOULD want.

The game has a player driven economy and there are plenty of crafters for said economy. More diversity is something that they are working on.
I DO think that swg is improving and that is based on my own experience with the game. From launch up until now swg has never seen more content and better balance and thats a fact. I realize that alot of people want the 32 professions back but these people fail to see the bigger picture. There are far too many combinations you can make with 32 professions, and to create good game balance between all those combinations would take far too long. Its simply not possible. With 9 professions at least the game finally has some balance.
No more overpowered alpha class, no more flavour of the month profession build, and altough there are flavour of the month classes now these can easily be (and are currently being) balanced.

The fact that you can move your left toe at all is a blessing of no small matter. It might require years of therapy and struggle, but you could walk again. Thats just how i am.Heck, though pirrg, you know - I have been following your advice all along.

Had a failure to agree with your prognosis.
Haven't even e-bayed credits, much less a whole jedi.
Yet.
And I'm more solid than your brick wall.
Usually.

Anyhow, wish me luck.

1. A player developed ecomony
2. Crafters for said economy
3. The UI still is too fast for many people to play
3 years is long enough to sort themselves out.
After nearly 3 years in development and 3 years live they should have decided which path they wanna follow by now!
death to the infidels of the nge~!!
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
We're sitting in our offices thinking of ways to upset our paying customers. I think were on track to meet that goal.

Read up on the "a history of the smuggler as written by a devs" post, assuming the reincarnation is still on the official forums.
Edited post to add in a link, in case you want to play duck. No excuses now.
i'm not sure if i should laugh or cry at the linked post.

Here we go again...
There are more than 15 regular posters here for starters, which btw the number dosent matter.
Im not speaking for "this entire forum" so dont try to be the forum mediator, just go back to posting contradicting statement after contradicting statement.
And last I never said opinion is the loudest, but it is. The majority of the people on these forums no longer like SWG, DEAL WITH IT.
lots of people love star wars.
lots of people love the variety and choices swg USED to have. where you could become anything, get bored, become something totally different.
like my dancer/entertainer, who became a CH, then a smuggler, then a bh, then some sort of commando-ish creation, then somewhere was a BE/CH, then a master ranger, and um, lord, i forget what all else.
oh wait, the same sort of idiots that introduced raiding into the MMORPG systems, destroyed all of what i just mentioned. work for the same company too.... mere coincedence?

of course, if you're lazy and want things dictacted to you in a nice, easy, farmable way.... maybe they want the eq-clone, wow wannabe style of game which is so popular with kids nowadays?

You being limited more by your attitude than by the changes to the game. There is just as much to do other than quests now as there was Pre-NGE, aside form those abilities specific to professions removed from the game.
The "richness" is still there, if a borked combat system all of the sudden causes you to ignore it, that's a different matter.
-d
what richness do you allude to? i can no longer have a single character which can learn/unlearn any and all professions in the game.
if i pick their crafter... can i also train my weapon of preference to defend myself? can i go with my non-combat theme and be a droid crafter that also commands animals, thusly i am a little general (especially when you add in faction pets)? do they still have theme planets? are you able to solo them (with the right set up)? or is it now forcing you to group with these other predefined classes so that you have a tank, healer, mage and rogue in each party?
do elaborate upon the richness please.

i honestly wish you people would just LET THIS GAME DIE SO WE CAN GET A SWG 2 AND HAVE A REAL GAME >> AN AWSOME GAME >> WHY KEEP THIS PIECE OF SHIT ON LIFE SUPPORT!!!!!
one that has nothing at all to do with SOE.
and amen to that.

or maybe 13 year olds/teens like the name of star wars, and at that age, you're not really looking for much other than a killkillkill game? versus someone a tad older, is looking for actual content, and meat, in the game. like a player-run economy, stimulated by the plethora of player created devices, ALL of which you COULD create if you so desired and took the time to skill up. maybe non teens enjoy having player run cities (even with a politician class), where you can progress in said class and grow your city (along with your guild).
just pointing out a couple of things that the average teen (or 13 yr old) wouldn't care the first whit about. whereas a mindless shoot-em-up game, complete with no brainer classes to level, is um, well, what they WOULD want.
