Funny topic...
I wan't to thank the person who quoted ICO and Beyond Good and Evil. Those are for me the video games proof that quality doesn't mean popularity... Life sucks, that's for sure. Popularity is called by : - Popularity (previous Blizzard games) - Mediatisation (what lacked ICO and BGE) - Mainstream quality - Actual quality (and that's not exactly the same thing)
So I guess that's all pretty relative, like others said...
> you don't NEED to gain something to have fun in PVP. That's exactly what I think, if you take the "in pvp" away for a moment. I don't care about how I'll dress my character or the amount of whatever-points I'll get if I do this or that, as long as I have fun doing it. I like to play among others, to be able to share adventures with them, but I don't like to be forced to play with them, to have to"lfg" in order to make the next quest or whatever and gain levels in order to lfg again and again and again... That's what I liked and disliked in World of Warcraft. (and what I sense I would just dislike in most MMORPGs) I played for about 9 months, finaly arriving at a 54 levels rogue that didn't feel the need to go any further. I tried some pvp too (with a level ~30), and if you don't NEED to gain something to have fun in PVP you still need some fun enemies for that... And all I had was "sport competition like" battlegrounds, or I would be in the world (let's take hillsbrad) either - annoying people while they're questing - being/getting stucked in raids of level 50 players would come massively to exterminate the level 30s who had started the fight
So I just paused with the game... Hoping that someday they would put pvp objectives on the map... Now this feature is showing, and I'm now hoping they will do it well (and find a way to avoid big levels differences). I just like this game, because of the way I feel it. Fresh and Simple, I would say... The depth can still be added, noticebly by the players themself via some bits of roleplay. I hope next evolutions of WoW would add some life in the world and away from battlegrounds and raids. (next step could then be pvp in a same faction group vs group or guilds vs guilds)
time to eat...
Just one thing, Toria > if you think you know your online gameing friends.. > that you have known more then 5 years. think again.. You said too much or not enough here...

So they both suck, happy?
Wow is a fun game, and very accessible for new players, or new gamers in general. You certainly can't argue with it's financial success. I don't play it because it doesn't offer many of the things i look for in an MMO. So what it has fun combat, most MMOs do in the opinion of the people playing them. I personally need a little bit more than that to justify a monthly fee... otherwise i would just go play battlefield.
Going beyond gamecube quality graphics, which are the original reason I was never interested in WoW... it lacks the community building features that really make a game feel like a persistent world to me. Things like player housing and cities, meaningful crafting with a decent market for crafter items would go a long way toward making this game actually be the best MMO out, and not just the MMO with the highest rate of subscription.
I think we can agree that at any given time the number one album, movie or book in this country may not be considered by most to be the best book or movie or whatever.. just the best selling.
I tell people all the time. Try DAOC. I have played WoW heavily and have multiple 60s was in a guild with some of the top and the top pvper in the game. I, for many reasons mentioned in most of these posts left the game.
I have not seen a game yet that has upgraded graphics and dungeons and content and quests like DAOC. I started when it was young and some zones had yet to have mobs in it. Quests were there but not a lot of them.
Now that is all different. You can level to 50 easily once 50 you can work on Champion Level Quests, new mounts with barding and baggage, that actually look like horses.. and unicorns and other mythical mounts. You can work on epic armour/weapons and even artifacts. You can craft legendary weapons. The new armour looks great the weapons incredible.
I know I have rambled a bit but bear with me when I tell you I have done the EQs/UOs/Lineage/GW/DDO/M59/COH/COV/and ad nauseum more games than I can count. There are alot of great games and in there day Meridian 59 was one...UO was one...EQ was one...DAOC is now...Eve Online...gotta take a special kind of player I disagree it is a great game. I personally hate it. But some like it. Not social enough for me. DDO is constantly changing and is fun like wow for a time...COH/COV...great idea for a game and great to casually play but I won't subscribe again...Planetside...fun and it is changing but still kinda boring for my tastes. Hopefully the newer changes to it will be for the better.
There are a lot of games out there and when I saw the actual numbers of players in each game on a site listed in one of these forums I was shocked. Numbers on WOW are huge I would only request some of those people come back to try DAOC. If more people came back to DAOC it would better 1000 percent better. All it is lacking are the people. It is very easy now to level to 50 and after 4 plus years of bouncing back and forth to it. I actually enjoy it. I will say that when Warhammer Online comes out WOW better take a step to the side. It looks AWESOME. They aren't making DAOC 2 but Warhammer Age of Reckoning is gonna take WoW down a notch or three.
Great posts in here btw. I loved everyones comments. Nice to hear a lot of candid opinions.
Obviously WOW isnt Going to match up to one of the greatest mmos ever, unlike final fantasy. but WOW is a really great game and its also has alot of subscribers to the game , but its not like players are going to determie how the gameplay is but the game play plays out really well! It did revolutionize the gaming industry for pcs but you cant say its the best game in alll catagories
Why do people like WoW so much? I downloaded a trial a month ago and could only play for 3 hours before I got really bored. I don't see anything interesting about the game and it's just like all the other crap that is on the market today. UO is still great and Trammel doesn't bother me at all. I love to sit there and chat and not have to worry about pickpockets.

This is total bullshiet. Have we not seen enough of these "WoW is the best omgodzor d00dz" fanboy posts? I HAVE. Every single post dedicated to the patriotism of a specific genre or game whether it be the sci-fi EVE Online, the in-depth EQ2 the... -in my humble OPINION- ammature World of Warcraft.
It's the OPINION we're seeing here, fellow posters - AN OPINION. Sure thing Mr."period" - you can tell me that World of Warcraft is the best... but you're not - you're telling me World of Warcraft is the most popular.
Hahahaha... *sigh*... my dear, dear poster: let us take in politics for example (a choice that some, it seems, on this website have a knack for). Mr. George W Bush - an extremely POPULAR president. Popular? POPULAR?!? (You may ask me). Let's define popular for just a second:
Popular: "appealing to OR appreciated by a wide range of people". Okay, let's take into account the first term: appealing. Whether he's a bad president or not, Mr. Bush is appealing. He's a well known figure, and reputable at that (whether bad reputation or not) - he IS appealing. Therefore, you could say he is also popular. Now: World of Warcraft... oh where to begin... okay: POPULAR - World of Warcraft is indeed the essence of MMO popularity, but just like George Bush is the essence of political popularity (as well as media in some cases) - this does not necessarily mean that it is the BEST the GREATEST the most IMMERSIVE MMORPG out there, does it? And it also does not mean Mr. Bush is the BEST the GREATEST the most ENGAGING politician out there... NO SIR!
Feel free to correct me on this one but I believe you don't need to.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Game On!
I think the reason a lot of people are playing WoW is because it is the ffirst MMO they have played. They probably jumped on the MMORPG bandwagon and decided they would go to WoW because the creator is Blizzard, the creator of their favorite game..Warcraft III...so since that is a good RTS game, it means WoW is a good MMORPG, right? Well, maybe not, but this is only my opinion. To tell you the truth, some of my friends play WoW and they enjoy it, personally I didn't like it to much. The graphics weren't my thing, too cartoony imho and also it seemed like it would be a grind. It doesn't look too bad. And don't get me wrong, if someone payed me, I would play it...but no one's paying me, I have to pay them..so no thanks. This is just my opininon however...I mean...I used to play Pokemon XD
(Japanese martial arts master voice) An mmorpg (in this case WoW) is only the best mmorpg according to one's vision of the best (failed attempt at the wise martial arts master outlook). It depends on what you've always wanted to be. Have you always wanted to be a fighting warrior, spellcasting mage and such, or a high flying superhero that brings terror into the eyes of criminals. Its what you wish you could be that makes an mmorpg good. The aim of an mmorpg is to make shunned nerds into beastly advesaries and respectable heroes/villains right!?
I either tried or played 6 other mmo's before WoW came out. I'd been playing mmo's pretty much exclusively for 4 or 5 years in fact. I think WoW certainly did a lot of things right, that I personaly hadn't seen before.
any class you wanted to play was completly soloable from the first level to the last. you could do this soloing by doing only quests, and never run out of quests to do. most of the quests offer decent rewards for the effort involved, and you get to see what that reward is ahead of time before you accept the quest. you can abandon a quest anytime you want, and most of the time go back and get it again if you change your mind. I for one hadn't seen any of these qualitys in a game previously.
The time it takes to go from level one to 60 is about 2/3 of the time most mmo's requred prevously. A faster leveling experience hasn't seemed to cost them veteran players but instead helped to prove that given an opportunity many players will reroll new charcters to try a diffrent class.
party play is encouraged, in the form of elite quests that offer superior loot. instead of trying to make game mechanics force party play, like a lot of mmo's still do.
the game has no real death penalty, prior to WoW conventional wisdom was if you didn't have a harsh penatly players wouldn't care about death. i've seen enough people get upset by complete wipes in the prevously mentioned elite dungons to know this idea no longer holds water. While i understand that many people prefer some sort of death penalty i don't think it's absoulty necessary to have fun.
End game content, WoW has in fact got end game content in a number of diffrent forms, working up your reputation with diffrent factions for nice items. PvP Battle Grounds, a mixed bag at the moment but still undergoing tuning, or raids of various sizes. I for one have little intrest in 40 people raids but at least your are given some real choices, most prior mmo's I'd played had a working philosophy of once the player had reached the last level they could make their own fun.
Like many people have already pointed out which is the best mmo at any given time is each persons personal choice. I think most people can agree its one of the top ten mmo's at the present time, i enjoy playing it and like most gamers, am always on the look out for a new mmo that I might like better.
I have to agree with some of the previous post in that WOW has the user base it has in part due to the fact it brought in a bunch of people that may have never played a mmo in there life if it wasn't for this game. So from their perspective I can totally see it. Its super simple to get into and make progress to a point. To those who have never experienced the mmo I would equate it to how I felt about SWG when I first played, I was blown away by the MMO experience not because the orginal swg release was the best, but because I had never played anything like it before.
Now for my reasons to why it isn't the end all be all of MMO's, point 1 nothing new was done in this game, check around and most of you will see that every element in wow has been done before and many of the things it does were done better by other earlier mmo's. In my opinion it doesn't do pvp all that well and the grind is unbearable, now I could tolerate that grind if I had something to reward me at 60 but thats just it at 60 people start to lose interest, why because the content for those that have endured that grind is pretty slim. I'll again reference SWG for this point(I know I know SWG was always full of issues but bear with me), you grind in SWG to 80 post CU pre NGE and now you have a 80, at this point you have a few options, focus on improving the 80 with great gear and prepare for the whole rebel Imp fight, hunt Jedi(bounty hunters) or start your quest for the Epic class in the Jedi( my choice at the time but each is a great time no matter how you stack it.
Now for the biggest flaw that I found for me anyway, in that wow is a static world its not a living breathing world and it never will be its a giant theme park, you enjoy the ride while it last and then its over or repeat with another toon doing the same quest again, this might be ok but they didn't reward the player who made that grind with a epic class character reward or new content to tackle. I hate having to take the exact same path especially considering how painful the Wow grind can be. Its still personal preference I crave another SWG pre nge in a living breathing world where players own land, businesses, towns, have wars among the guilds etc.
I played wow on a pvp server and heres my experience having fun then out of nowhere ganked by a lvl 50 when I 'm a lowly lvl 10 then again ganked by a high level when I was a lvl 15, and this basically is what I experienced during the slow grind. I wouldn't mind that if it wasn't for the fact that many of those players felt it necessary to message me about how I just got pwned, wow your a lvl 50 and you killed a lvl 10, bravo must make you feel so proud(sarcasm). So then I start on a non pvp server only to read various post and forums on how once you hit 50 its game over for many due to lack of relavent things to do. When I started to look into it I came to the conclusion it just wasn't for me, not to say its bad but little to light on depth, though to its credit for those new to the genre I can't think of a better game to cut your teeth on so to speak, but to say its the best seems a bit much in my opinion. just my two cents.
I'm waiting for the next game to get that living breathing universe feel right, but thats what I crave, a game that I can carve out my little part in the world to my liking, I think alot of others feel the same and many would leave wow if someone could nail that type of game(I'm praying that they make swg2 with that concept in mind but who knows). I'm not here to bash the game though I tried it and came to my own conclusions on it, which was it wasn't for me, doesn't make it bad just not tailored to the vets of the mmo genre who have already experienced much of what wow does but better in various games. Just my thoughts

I wan't to thank the person who quoted ICO and Beyond Good and Evil. Those are for me the video games proof that quality doesn't mean popularity... Life sucks, that's for sure. Popularity is called by :
- Popularity (previous Blizzard games)
- Mediatisation (what lacked ICO and BGE)
- Mainstream quality
- Actual quality (and that's not exactly the same thing)
And all I had was "sport competition like" battlegrounds, or I would be in the world (let's take hillsbrad) either
- annoying people while they're questing
- being/getting stucked in raids of level 50 players would come massively to exterminate the level 30s who had started the fight
Just one thing, Toria
> if you think you know your online gameing friends..
> that you have known more then 5 years. think again..
-----Zero Punctuation Eve Online Review-----
I tell people all the time.

Which FF Character Are You?
Peace
