KotOR MMO

MX13MX13 Member Posts: 2,489

Well, I just got a confirmation from a second source. I'm not saying it's fact, but 2 seperate sources have now said they have seen materials for it. Here we go:

LA & Bioware are to announce a KotOR MMO. The release date is late '07. Apparently, LA decided that if everyone wanted to be Jedi, they would make a MMO in a timeline that would allow it. Materials seen apparently look similar to SWG & KotOR, including the duel Ground / Space hybrid template.

One of my sources claims an announcement will be made by the holidays (probably sooner since it is beginning to leak) but they don't know the date. My second source is saying this is what the team will be working on at Bioware Austin, and they consider to be a "Fantasy" style MMO, just set in Star Wars. They are apparently already working on the Engine Tuning, and base Art is begnning.

It was also added that SWG will keep going and will be sunset at the new MMO's release. My second source added they will release a Classic version of the game this Winter, but I have no confirmation source.

Just sharing... don't be hate'in...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

That still agrees with the rumor I heard months ago from someone involved with Bioware was doing a Kotor MMO.

Never disproven... just never proven either.

Apparently base art and Story Boards are making the rounds in secret... one source said there's a confrence coming up, and that since its leaking, they may surprise announce it... they seem to already be working with texture models in the Engine they want, that's pretty far along...

The rumor I got was that they were actually basing it ON the pre-cu SWG. That Biowware was actually fixing it up right and providing.. what is it again.. CONTENT! That's the reason they hired pre-cu programmers.

Rumor also came in that Raph was "consulting".. but I haven't confirmed it.

There seems to be a new Engine involved, so that would be interesting... but since it seems they may already be working with Texture Models in the Engine, that would make sense as well....

Woot!  Best of both worlds perhaps?  Classic and MMO Kotor?

    Must....resist....optimism.....

I will go on record here saying that if this happens, I will send LA a nice Christmas Card.

Well they did snag 7 people off the original Dev team.

Boy this would just bury SWG... not to mention show SOE how to make a game.

KOTOR with Bioware won 123 awards, games of the year and multiple good reviews, good sales and it was well recieved as a game.

    Bottom line:

SOE = not a good Star Wars product track record...

Bioware = Not only a good track record, but might be the best to date for a Star Wars based game.

Ahh I wish they would just announce this if it was true....man it would just uproot what is left of the SWG fanbase and maybe make them see SOE for what they are and what they did.

KARMA -- as stated months ago on the SOE boards by me will always win.

I doubt that. Pre-cu had its merits, but it's not mainstream. KOTOR is all about mainstream.

My guess would be quest driven storyline, instances, safe-zone cities, pvp arenas and pvp goal-driven areas.

    Simple facts:
SWG engine is old, and overdesigned.
It's aimed to be an overkill of a virtual world design, with complete scenegraph synchronization. Good for virtual worlds, unsuitable for games.
Pre-cu worked as a whole. You cannot take out a few small pieces and say they are what was good.
Console markets are almost a given.
Their deadline is short. Very short. Too short. 3rd party engine, possibly turbine or unreal or something similar, which is incompatible and unsuitable for pre-cu type of world.

I'm willing to bet it'll come out as a good, solid game that builds on top of KOTOR's fanbase. Who will it be designed for?

Hopefully, as long as I don't have to do a mission 1000 times to get a full suit of it.

     Here, this will crush everyone...

There's still ONE major part of this that is up in the Air: Who would run the game?

Bioware has ZERO MMO operation experience, and SOE is the obvious choice. This seems to be what SOE is moving towards doing already, game hosting. Plus it would explain any cooperation by SOE, which if they are using the old engine, would already be happening.

But that's why I thought that rumor had some teeth.

Since their deadline is so short... why not take the pristine pre-cu code and let the people who developed it FIX it? Add content, re-skin what you need to.

They had an engine that worked. They just needed content.

If it's true.. That would be disappointing.

For me and many like me Star Wars was never about jedi and light sabers. Star Wars was the original trilogy. You remember, the one where there was one jedi and his name was Luke. There was one jedi because all of the others were gone aside from two old men that didn't have the strength to fight anymore.

Star Wars was about storm troopers with weak minds blindly following the orders of corrupt men who blindly followed the orders of other corrupt men. Star Wars was about the smuggler, just trying to get by in the galaxy. It was about the bounty hunter looking for a buck. It was about freedom loving people fighting back against an oppressive government.

Instead of making yet another 'be Luke Skywalker' Star Wars game, why not take a chance and make a 'be anyone else' game? SWG started that way, it was good that way, and it could have stayed that way and been a much better game for it.

BioWare Corp Announces Star Wars Galaxies "The Old Republic" as it's MMORPG title.

Bioware announced today that an MMORPG is in the works based on the successful Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic series built off of the already successful title Star Wars Galaxies an Empire Divided produced by Sony Online Entertainment. The game will basically be a branch off of the first SW:G but set in the old republic era. There is currently no release date but they did give us the working title as Star Wars Galaxies :The Old Republic which seems fitting enough. Bioware?s new team of developers have been working very close with Sony Online Entertainments team at the Austin studio over the past few months to get the basic layout for the game underway. SOE will manage subscription and media distribution for the title and LAE and Bioware will be working on the design and implementation of the server and databases. Stay tuned for more info on this exciting release?

Won't crush me.  Experience <> Competency.  What you are saying is that nobody new should even bother doing anything because they are not qualified.  That's like saying Pete Sampras shouldn't have bothered playing tennis, because we already had Andre Agassi.  New players come and go.

Besides, the above example not withstanding, there is nothing that prevents BioWare from hiring the best people in the industry to do it.  I'll take skilled people over an entrenched company with predispositions any day.

And finally...so what if SOE ran the servers?  As long as they have 0% input on design, 0% input on coding, 0% input on testing and just run the servers and billing, I think they have proven they can handle that part well enough.  It would be in their best interests to do the only thing they seem to be good at: Keeping the hamsters fed.

I realize I said I quit. I never said it was forever :)

For me it's perfect... one SW MMO where there are Jedi (and Mando's) who are not Lukes, since they are commen... a Jedi Acadamey Online set OUT of the Movie Timeline... and a Game set in the Timeline with few (or ZERO) Jedi.... I'd play both...

That's not what I'm saying at all... I merely was stating that many would have a problem with this, basing that on how flamed the Thread about how good VSoH was looking and them Running the VSoH Servers...

True.  There will be some people who will resist playing because of ANY SOE involvement.  To them I say "Get over it.  Watch SOE swallow crow and be reduced to a glorified ISP.  Enjoy it, because there will be suffering in SOE as a result.  This is like LA telling SOE that they suck at design and coding."

If people realize this, hopefully they can return to the game and help rebuild the community.

I HATE SOE, but I also HATE Microsoft.... yet I still use Microsoft products... To me, they both have suspect business practices & histories...

That said, SOE does one thing well (not great, but well): Run Servers. If that's thier roll, I would accept it. If they took over the Dev & Direction of the game, I wouldn't touch it...

I am huge Star Wars fan dating back to '77.  I have been really delving into the EU lately, and have actually found the Old Republic very intresting. I actually think that this would ba a perfect setting for a Star Wars MMORPG. Since there is much less writen about that era it would give the designers alot of room to make content without following the strict timeline of the GCW. Things would make sense with SWG in a KOTOR timeline, more than just Jedi.
