I don't think that is strange at all. Single player RPGs are all about the story, and KOTOR had a well written story. The gameplay was a bonus when the choice you made dictated how the story would progress, something fairly rare in computer RPGs (not pen & paper).
As for MMORPGs are different since they have other humans to interact with, not just NPCs. The reason I like pre-NGE SWG was because of the interactions between players. However, story content in most MMOGs is sadly unimaginative.
Personally, I would like to see a MMO with Pre-CU gameplay (looking at ex-SWG devs hired by Bioware) with extra content written by a team that does a better than decent job of storytelling (Bioware).
Originally posted by MX13 Originally posted by tillamook Originally posted by MX13 Originally posted by tillamook Originally posted by Tauceti Originally posted by MX13 Originally posted by Shayde The rumor I got was that they were actually basing it ON the pre-cu SWG. That Biowware was actually fixing it up right and providing.. what is it again.. CONTENT! That's the reason they hired pre-cu programmers.
Rumor also came in that Raph was "consulting".. but I haven't confirmed it.
There seems to be a new Engine involved, so that would be interesting... but since it seems they may already be working with Texture Models in the Engine, that would make sense as well....
If I remembere correctly, did they announce a while back that Bioware has bought the license to use Hero's Journey game engin?
Actually,THISwas what I was refering to, and I was mistaken....
That is a game that SOE will be producing for Perpetual. I assume Star Trek Online will follow suit. I saw a trend a long time ago and that is---- Game engine companies building the engine the game runs on, debugging the engine itself, Developers building games off that engine (means MMOs will be put out faster than ever with more content), debugging content, adding content, SOE supporting the game with customer service, Server support, media distribution, promotional content. This is a new way for SOE to make money and do less. Great strategy really. Everyone wins relatively speaking. Games launch faster with more content and less bugs. They already have experience supporting large scale MMOs. I wouldn't be surprised if a few other "Host companies pop up out of no where. The writing is on the wall, this will be SOE’s next staple. You can refer back to this thread in the future if I’m wrong.
As a matter of fact I bet Bioware will use them for this, hence my fake press release I made up 4 or five months ago.
A MMO based on KOTOR is really what they should have done to begin with. You would have been able to create storylines, etc pretty much at will, instead of having to get approval for every character.
Without giving them up, one is an Office Monkey in San Diego, and the other is a Coder in Austin... Niether know eachother, and where they got this info was from seperate sources... Oh, and they're not SOE stooges, or work for the same company....
Well, I can't afford to get my hopes up again. I just love KOTOR that much, and I am gullable for rumors. yeah, I can't get my hopes up for this one, just for someone to confirm that it was no more than a rumor in about a week.

At the time KOTOR was not as well known. It should have and almost was based on the prequels. As a matter of fact to this day you can still see a lot of the design traits taken from ep1. At the time there was less content to work off since they were not finished. This is why we got ep 4-5. Also they were more well known. I also think this may have killed the popularity of SWG since kids where less familar with ep 4-6 than Ep1 and Jar Jar Binks.

I see where you are coming from, but it is really bad to think that only kids think of SW as being about the Force and Jedi vrs Sith. I am 26 yrs old, have a family of my own, and know many more people that are just like me but both older and younger that think as I do. Hell, you could even search the internet and most things about SW you will find will be about the Force.
The first Trilogy were not and are not the end all be all of SW. You have the first three Episodes and the EU, not to mention the very popular KOTOR series and the Jedi Knight games. All these have been accepted into the SW cannon, so whether you like it or not, it is SW. This means that SW is centered around the Force, with Jedi being the good guys and Sith being the bad guys.

Just doesn't get you around the problem that if there is *any* combat class besides Jedi, they will either be roadkill for the Jedi or Jedi will be nerfed. If they're roadkill, then it's not much of an MMO ... if the Jedi are nerfed, they aren't much of a Jedi.
I'm not saying it couldn't be an entertaining MMO, but I don't see any way around of Jedi doing all the fighting and every other class being non-combat if they're really powerful enough to be called Jedi.
However, a KOTOR MMO that was all Jedi and a classic pre-CU SWG with no Jedi would be win-win. Everybody who just HAS to wave a glowy wand around can do it and everybody interested in a diverse MMO can have it. Just not at the same time.

True, but I don't see that happening. Anyways, Jedi and the Sith in the games got killed by Mandolorians and other professions, just not the best of the Jedi and Sith. Which leaves us with two options. One being that Jedi and Sith are unlockable only and two being that PC Jedi and Sith are not any higher than a Jedi Knight or Sith Apprentice and can be killable by other professions.
I hope this is true i would give anything be able to play as HK and grief the f#ck out of everyone 24/7 LMAO omg that would be the best ever lol. If u can truly be a Sith lord not a cheap crappy dark jedi that would be awesome to the whole idea is just a 100 times better and its bioware!! Finally an end to NGE if its true that is...
We're sitting in our offices thinking of ways to upset our paying customers. I think were on track to meet that goal.

Think of it this way.
You get to be Sith. Along with 1500 other Sith. And then there's Jedi. 1500 of them. And you can pvp with them one on one in 64 person arenas.

Yes about 90% of the SW games are about the force, but i dont realy remenber who say this, on this topic or it was on an topic in BioWare Forums, its easy to make an game all about the force in single player, but making an MMO it will meas that will not be just NPC, they will be real persons playing whit u, when i was playing SWG, the time of the vilage i realy hate it because u could get Jedi easy, i dind even go there, i would only go there when i have master all the professions because jedi should be rare or at least dificult to be one.
I dont have 26 but 23 hehe less 3 then u, but even when i was watching SW when i was 7 ( when i got in love for my first time ) i have understand that SW isnt all about Force, SW is about the rebel's and the empire ( ep IV-VI ), rebel's making they way to "destroy" the empire so the galaxie could rest in peace and the jedi and sith just make part of the story too.

In KotOR, I got whooped by plenty of non-Jedi. You're assuming... Just because SOE wasn't smart enough to pull it off, doesn't mean Bioware can't....
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
I will gladly take that anyday over the NGE crap. I mean seriously look how much better and high end the original kotor is compared to NGE now. If thisis true its gonna rock no matter what in comparison to NGE.
Kotor-Voice dialogue quest givers SWG-Reading boxes Kotor- Duel wielding sabers and guns SWG-lucky if your gun equips 1/2 the time Kotor-Sith lords SWG-Dark jedi which is a joke
These are just a few examples. Think about this a 3 year old game has more then NGE does now and its just a 100 times way better. Ill never get why kotor is so awesome and older but SWG is way outdated and just a joke in comparison. So ill glady take jedi vs sith arena anyday if i can actually be a sith lord not just a pissed off jedi a true sith lord!! And if your able to switch members like kotor or be an HK itself i will play that 24/7 And grief like no one has ever griefed before lol

1.Jedi/Sith are the same as everyone else. They have the glowsticks and the force, but Ranged Characters could still win against them.
Or, as an alternative, give the Non-jedi Lots of things that Jedi Can't do, Scoundrel-like skills, Scout Stealth, and A Soldier being Rambo/Squad Leading (Not quite sure if they wanted to stick with the KOTOR class system, these are just examples)
Crafters also cannot be left out of the equation, and the best weapons should be crafted or Reverse Engineered. There has to be an intracate economy. I would also like to see a reincarnation of the Entertainer class, but I doubt it will happen.
Or 2. Jedi/Sith are powerful as always. Except, it isn't a starter profession. Jedi and Sith are Rare (Probably post-KOTOR 2). An FRS System is put in place (Not necessarily based on PvP). They gain skills as they move up the ranks, but there should only ever be One master, and while he should be powerful, he shouldn't be able to take on the whole other side. Multiple Deaths should result in loss of rank/Demotion to the next lowest rank, which should keep things competitive. Jedis who die at lowest level should have to lose the force until they complete some sort of XP grind, or quest tree to get back in.
Again, all other classes have roles. Combat classes just cannot stand up as well to Jedi. Crafters have their Economy as well and play an important part. The same from above applies about entertainers.
These ideas can be bent a bit, but if either of these happened, I would be there the first day of beta.
We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment; We are choosing to be here right now -Tool, Parabola
Jedi can still be uber. Jedi just don't have any armor, that's all. A Jedi at melee should own anyone but another jedi. At range, the Jedi has a lightsaber to deflect shots, so NO GUNS OR RIFLES for Jedi, it's just uncivilized =P
As a Jedi, you'd start out as just force sensitive, you would have to train a long time to wield a LS like a true master, and until such time, you'd be likely to inflict massive damage on yourself.
Now, for the other classes, how do they fight Jedi? Vibroblade based weapons. They used them in the first 2 KOTORs, they used them in EP3 on that crashing ship. You'd have to be very skilled in their use as well. If you fought just melee against a Jedi, you should still lose, period. How do you combat that then? Grenades, mines, traps, things that will keep the Jedi from closing to melee range. This would also sap the Jedi's health tremendously and then create an even playing field for non-Jedi.
If you ask me, the jack of all trades should not be Jedi, and Jedi is what I play. Make either BH or commando type classes be a jack of all trade.
I have a ton more ideas lol. Excited about this IF it's true.

Umm that sounds like SWG now. I'm sick of the "Magic" combat skills in profs with their vanishing abilities and magic nades from no where that seem more fit for games with wizards and shit. There was no magic in the old days of SWG except when it came from a Jedi/Force user. And even then it wasn't way out there with the particle effects like it seems to be now. Shit even TKM wasn't so hard to beleive with the red trace effects off their fists. Looked better than the CU with the Batman and Robin PooF! PooF! PooF! and balls of "White Light" WTF did they do to the game????

Originally posted by MX13 Well, I just got a confirmation from a second source. I'm not saying it's fact, but 2 seperate sources have now said they have seen materials for it. Here we go: LA & Bioware are to announce a KotOR MMO. The release date is late '07. Apparently, LA decided that if everyone wanted to be Jedi, they would make a MMO in a timeline that would allow it. Materials seen apparently look similar to SWG & KotOR, including the duel Ground / Space hybrid template. One of my sources claims an announcement will be made by the holidays (probably sooner since it is beginning to leak) but they don't know the date. My second source is saying this is what the team will be working on at Bioware Austin, and they consider to be a "Fantasy" style MMO, just set in Star Wars. They are apparently already working on the Engine Tuning, and base Art is begnning. It was also added that SWG will keep going and will be sunset at the new MMO's release. My second source added they will release a Classic version of the game this Winter, but I have no confirmation source. Just sharing... don't be hate'in...
Honestly, that all sounds great but all i care about is the "Classic Version" if it really is classic.

I see. More powerfull things they could use, like a big ass ion cannon to wipe out 30 Jedi at once? That would even be better IMHO. I think the magic effects ruined SWG.

I personally would rather not play as a jedi. I don't want a glowstick. I want to be a lowlife smuggler, I want to be "Extra #297". If this game isn't going to support non-jedi at all, I'm not going to like it as much. All I'm saying.

hmm we knew how episode4-6 ended but we had no trouble playing the GCW that never existed lol.
i doubt anyone would mind fighting the mandalore wars vs the republic.
mite be pretty damn fun pvp having a mando clan for a guild and clear opposition for a change.....problem being what do the jedi do in that system other then kill mando unless they write in some backing story.
perhaps the revan and the counsol can have storyline for your fall to the sith or remaining republic and have some falling out durring the mando wars or leave the actuall sith vs republic part for later event in game when its a few years out.
that mite also sway some ppl from rolling a jedi rite away if they knew the divide wouldnt happen in the jedi for a couple in game yearsand had to play out a nice lapdog jedi in the mean time.
u know what kills me about this damn info is its another year with shit games to play....rrr
strongly considering giving up gaming and geting a life thanks to SOE:(
The ONLY thing I don't want if this does happen to be true is it to not be rushed for any reason. That is why we have NGE.This could be the ultimate Star Wars game if done right.I do agree jedi must be worked at like in all the KOTOR games, but must depend on other classes to help them. You would have to go to either the jedi academy or if sith the sith academy to become a master. But say like how obi-wan needed han to take them to Alduran(sp),inter dependency was key to old game that made it so good.Make it that other classes are just as important and that even though we all know alot want to be jedi, that it is still a good time not too be.Bioware I think are only ones that could pull this off.

But sorry to say, reachwind is rigth about this, the ppl that think the SW is all about the force are "kids" in my opinion, the sw IV to VI show an SW that Jedi make part of it but there are many thinks about SW whitout having to do whit the Force.
P.S. Sorry about my english hehe
If I remembere correctly, did they announce a while back that Bioware has bought the license to use Hero's Journey game engin?
Tauceti
yes ->clicky<-
Isn't this the Engine for one of SOE's next MMO Publishes? If it is, that means they're a history for it. Also, has anyone seen it in action?
http://www.soepress.com/release.asp?i=22
Actually, THIS was what I was refering to, and I was mistaken....
Well, I can't afford to get my hopes up again. I just love KOTOR that much, and I am gullable for rumors. yeah, I can't get my hopes up for this one, just for someone to confirm that it was no more than a rumor in about a week.

Don't worry about your English. I see you are from Portugal, so it is admirable that you took the effort to learn another language other than your native. Anyways, back on topic.

You get to be Sith. Along with 1500 other Sith. And then there's Jedi. 1500 of them. And you can pvp with them one on one in 64 person arenas.
Joy...

In fact, forget the SWG!!!!
I will gladly take that anyday over the NGE crap. I mean seriously look how much better and high end the original kotor is compared to NGE now. If thisis true its gonna rock no matter what in comparison to NGE.
Kotor-Voice dialogue quest givers
SWG-Reading boxes
Kotor- Duel wielding sabers and guns
SWG-lucky if your gun equips 1/2 the time
Kotor-Sith lords
SWG-Dark jedi which is a joke
These are just a few examples. Think about this a 3 year old game has more then NGE does now and its just a 100 times way better. Ill never get why kotor is so awesome and older but SWG is way outdated and just a joke in comparison. So ill glady take jedi vs sith arena anyday if i can actually be a sith lord not just a pissed off jedi a true sith lord!! And if your able to switch members like kotor or be an HK itself i will play that 24/7 And grief like no one has ever griefed before lol

This will work, if, and only if:

I didn't mean that Scouts could disappear at will, and Soldiers could randomly throw grenades they didn't have. I meant that only they would have the certs to use it, and other classses wouldn't

Honestly, that all sounds great but all i care about is the "Classic Version" if it really is classic.
/drool I need pre-cu

I see. More powerfull things they could use, like a big ass ion cannon to wipe out 30 Jedi at once? That would even be better IMHO. I think the magic effects ruined SWG.

I take it you're a fan of Jedi being on top?
See idea #2.
I personally would rather not play as a jedi. I don't want a glowstick. I want to be a lowlife smuggler, I want to be "Extra #297". If this game isn't going to support non-jedi at all, I'm not going to like it as much. All I'm saying.
Never did I say I want an "I win" Button, which makes a magical hammer fall from the sky and crush all my opponents.

hmm we knew how episode4-6 ended but we had no trouble playing the GCW that never existed lol.
i doubt anyone would mind fighting the mandalore wars vs the republic.
mite be pretty damn fun pvp having a mando clan for a guild and clear opposition for a change.....problem being what do the jedi do in that system other then kill mando unless they write in some backing story.
perhaps the revan and the counsol can have storyline for your fall to the sith or remaining republic and have some falling out durring the mando wars or leave the actuall sith vs republic part for later event in game when its a few years out.
that mite also sway some ppl from rolling a jedi rite away if they knew the divide wouldnt happen in the jedi for a couple in game yearsand had to play out a nice lapdog jedi in the mean time.
u know what kills me about this damn info is its another year with shit games to play....rrr
strongly considering giving up gaming and geting a life thanks to SOE:(
oh yeah question..is EMU dead?
