Gospel of Mary Magdalene

So I'm watching the Discovery Channel and there is a show about the gospels that didn't make it into the Bible.  One of them is the gospel of Mary Magdalene.  Yup, apparently she wrote one too, but because she was a woman and also because of some of the things she wrote, the church decided to leave her texts out of the Bible.

Here's one of the reasons the show said her gospels were discarded.

Apparently, Jesus had told Mary Magdalene that if someone dies and their soul is sent to hell all it takes is someone in Heaven wishing for them not to go there and they are freed from that banishment.  Anyone can be freed from going to hell if a person in heaven wishes them not to go.  It could be your mother,  your father, your brother or sister, or even that kind person that was your teacher in school and saw something in you no one else did.

So, this is one of the texts that the church decided to leave out.  I wonder why they found this to be so threatening?

Jesus had sex with her, etc etc...

There's tons of crazy things why it wasn't in the Bible.  Tons of made up stories, some could be true, some couldn't.

ya but its the history channel blowing smoke again as usual.

the gospel of mary magdalene doesnt have a copy that is older then 300 or so years after the verified copies of the traditional apostles.

i believe the apocrifa and other books from the bible where excluded but i think that one is a fake.

Because fear keeps them in line.

IMO it is the fact (or suggested fact) that Mary was a strong-smart-independant woman. Now now now we will have none of that in Christainity.

I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.

I think you both are right.  She had two hits against her.

Well the Catholic Church left out the gospel of Jesus also because it didn't follow Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John's writings. To play devil's advocate though, he probably didn't write the gospel of Jesus, but don't forget that Mathew Mark, Luke, and John didn't actually write theirs either. It's not surprising to find out there are other very Important texts left out of the bible. Though the Catholic church now is a rather good influence on society(imo), it still has a lot of dogma.

Once again some of you have all of a sudden become experts on religious happenings a thousand years ago because you saw something on the discovery channel or read "The DaVinci Code".

There's any number of reasons why it wasn't included. But obviously it serves your purposes to attack christianity once again so I'll leave you to your hate-mongering.

no one in this entire thread has attacked Christianity, or said they hate it, so my advice to you is to stop playing a goddamn victim in every thread, and stop insulting people.

I applaude you Blurr.  Well said. It appears that these days it's the trendy thing to bash Christianity. Well at least one day I can say "I was Christian when Christian wasnt cool."

I also find it funny that these Secular progressive types are willing to believe a fictional movie (The Davinci Code) over ancient texts. Let it be known that archeological evidence has proven that many of the events mentioned in the Bible actually happened.

Utter nonsense. You're talking about a whore 2000 years ago. She was nothing and the only reason the name is remembered is Jesus wandered into the picture. Stop trying to add modern ideas of equality and independence to a time period that had no such beliefs.

    And I agree with Blurr.

So these people painting a picture that Christianity left out parts of the bible because it was written by a woman or because without it they can use fear as a tool. They're not saying anything to make Christianity look bad?

    Perish the thought, right?

I don't need to apologize for defending my beliefs when every 2nd post on this board is about how bad christianity is. Maybe you guys need to start listening to yourselves when you cry out "Just let people do what they want".

We are talking about the catholic church cencuries ago. If you beleive that it was all fun and games with the catholic church back then you are dead wrong. I would completely understand the Church using it as a way to scare people into the beleif back then. In today's modern society it is much different. Go on and defend your beleifs but don't deny history. You know that the gospel of mary magnaline was mostlikely left out because she was a woman. That is how it was back then, a patriarchal society, there would be no way in hell that the pope( the dominant male figure of the time) would let a woman preach something different from what he beleived in. Defend your Religion all you want, It is much better today, but don't insult people who are talking about history.

Or the more likely, less DaVinci explaination, it was a fake written later by someone with too much time on their hands in an attempt to be famous/make money. And considering it was "discovered" in 1896 I'm will to bet on my theory.

What does them being discovered in 1896 have to do with it?  The dead sea scrolls were found in 1947-56, does that mean they are fake too?

then would you care to explain to me how the gospel of Mary was found in multiple peices in both Cairo and Oxyrhyncus, Egypt by 3 different archeologists along with the sophia of Jesus, and the Gospel of Thomas?

I would love to hear your explanation of that.

The only people who mentioned the Da Vinci code are the two of you. Additionally, not one of them made an attack on Christianity in general. The worst that was said were a few attacks on the mentality of the old Catholic church. And it is absolutely true that certain prominant members of it would have liked to see those statements erased if they were around.

And, for the record, a lot of the stated facts in that book are true, well researched and verified. The conclusion the book came up with was however never meant to be anything other than fiction

Look in the Bible, right now, read through it and try to find the remotest scrap that says this. ITS NOT THERE

Mary Magdalene was not identified as a whore untill long after she and the other disciples were dead, the supposed reasons for the Catholic church saying she was one are varied, but we will never know for sure why they did.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

The dead sea scrolls which were discovered around an ancient Jewish settlement hidden in caves. This previously unknown and unreferrenced book was discovered by a guy rummaging around in a grave nowhere near the areas it referenced.

The thought isn't 'was it planted by the guy?' or 'maybe the guy in the grave wrote it as an outcast or his own ideas' or maybe 'someone put it there later for some reason' or 'it could be a work of fiction'. No, that sort of thinking is pure crazy talk. The only reasonable explanation is a massive religious conspiracy to seize control involving a massive coverup of what most religious people would consider a great gift that gives more into the life of their savior.

It's that sort of jump to insanity conclusions that give you these missle shooting 747s theories that people seem to eat up. Why is the most reasonable explainations so lost?

I go to church becouse i believe in jesus and that he was a great man, i cant care less about all the other stuff.  But its fun watching stuff like that on the discovery channel becouse it makes you think.

I have to agree with the  mojority here, during the middle ages christianity was a pretty corrupt religion, with the pope having too much power and all that stuff, so what we preach today is probably nothing even close to what really happened, they just changed the words around to the way they liked it and here it is today.  Its too bad.

The Book of Judas was also left out. They are translating it as we speak. It's to bad about 20 books were left out of the bible.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

I can just about guarantee that if they weren't left out, christianity would not be even close to what it is today.

The question is why would certain texts be kept and certain texts be left out?  I don't think that's bashing Christianity at all to just try to get the whole story.  Bashing Christianity would be to just blindly follow what certain people have picked out for you to read.  If they left texts out of the Bible then why is it bashing Christianity to go and try to find them and learn more about the religion?

If anything we're bashing the people who decided to censor the whole story and instead give you the parts that fit into their agenda.  I would think someone leaving texts out of the Bible would be offensive to you.

It was just released that they have found the gospels of Judas too.  Are you going to discredit something just because it is contemporary?  If that's the case then why don't you discredit all the newer religions and instead just go back to the most ancient and follow that one?
