How in God's name can this review be considered objective? The most serious drawback in the game is apparent in any screenshot you look at, graphics. Now I know a game can have good gameplay and bad graphics and be good, I played Asherons Call 1 for a long time. But seriously, this is 2006, and simulation or not, looking at the graphics in this game is like looking at the aftermath of Taco Bell in a toilet bowl. At least have the decency of telling us how big the paycheck is they are giving you to come here and spew this nonsense.

Most people that play this game don't care about graphics. If you could see the members section of the forums there is not one post about bad graphics. There used to be alot of them when the pre-orders came in but not any more. They realized that there is more to this game then the graphics, such as its community and the attention to crafting detail.
Someone also mentioned that there is alot of open area with nothing in. There are two reason for that.
1.) Noone has built there 2.) Unlike now, back then you could walk miles without seeing a single building or person..not sure about trees and we are waiting for the grass graphics.
Also out are expecting the game to be brilliant reds and pinks and purple like WoW (note not played WoW but seen Screen shots. and Rv does not have nor will ever have those (unless its on someones clothes but even then its not a very bright color. The colors in this game are natural.
That is a bit harsh don't you think? There are great games with lousy graphics that are still praised and highly rated. Asherson's Call came out in 1999. The graphics were average for the time and now they are very out of date. (Altough still worlds better than RV) However, the game still pulls an 8.1 rating here at MMORPG.com and to this day is held up as a measuring stick for other MMO's. Why is that? Because its a great game. It has great character customization, open ended PvP, and deep content.
RV's graphics look so poorly done that you just don't care to stick around to find out about the content. I am not a hater. In fact, I think RV's concepts look great. I consider myself very neutral in regards to this game. But, if I'm going to spend 20+ hours a week staring at a game, I think I might gouge my eyes out if I had to look at RV.
I'm not asking for the world. If the game had graphics that were even just a little better than AC's I would think about giving it a shot, but it just appears so unimmersive graphically that I just couldn't get past it. On top of this you read about walking along the bottom of lakes, large stretches of nothing but green grass, and the lack of animal NPC's just leaves me with the impression that this game is a shell. Its not even a sandbox game because there isn't any sand to play in. You can't even call this a reasonable simulation. I'm sure there were plants and wildlife in Ancient Rome.
Does this make players that share my opinion graphics "whores". Maybe you need to step back from the situation and put yourself in someone elses shoes and try to see their viewpoint. From your perspective, I think you see the potential in this game and you believe strongly in the development team. You want the game to succeed so it can live up to its full potential. I understand where you are coming from. I would like those things too, but when I look at whats presented reasonably and objectionally I see a terrible looking game that was made in somebodies spare time. If RB cared about their game as much as they should then they would try to make it at least a bit more visually appealing. My kid may be a genius, but I'm not sending her to school without having her brush her hair and teeth and putting on some decent clothing. After all, I do care about the way she looks even if I know how special she is inside.

Great! So if I like hardcore PvP, I will enjoy ATITD, cuz they are both MMOs...oh, wait...not all MMO's are the same, are they?
I think Razor is trying to say that RV is different than any other MMO out there...and its target audience has different priorities than the avg gamer...and should maybe be (re)viewed a little differently than the avg MMO.
Heh, I should tend to avoid posting in these forums even more and more. The people within this community just get worse and worse and just seem like kindergardeners.
Anyway, Review seems pro-Roma Victor....quite a few valid points but he held some facts back. Anyway, it gives you a good indication of what to expect from Roma Victor.
Back to the senseless arguing with nerds upsessed with flaming games and not living life, just wasting their time on a game they don't even like....you are kind of right, but the way you express it makes you look stupid.
I mean where are the constructive reasons of why RV is not a game to touch for the moment, unless you really are ready for an unstable client, choppy graphics, a very simple and lacking interface and some game mechanics that still don't work.
Roma Victor has the "POTENTIAL" to be a great simulation. Most of the time simulations are built to be entertaining and RV is considered an MMO because its a MMO Simulation set during the Roman Empire era. RV was created and intended to be an entertaining simulation, otherwise it would be useless and have no purpose to exist if it wasn't for entertainment, so yeah...we can agree Razorback got it somewhat wrong, but doesn't deserve so much flaming for it. We also can agree that RV isn't that entertaining unless you are a very patient person, who has a lot of time on their hands and really has a great interest in the Roman Empire era.
Back to the word "POTENTIAL".....a lot of people use this word to make it sound like a game will become great. The fact is it has a chance to be great is the accurate idea. For Roma Victor, that chance is quite slim, but from recent updates and the such, it seems to be widening. Still....a slim chance, but this game was never intended to be financially successful. It still hasn't reached proper entertaining levels though, since even I can't seem to enjoy it. I find it to be too stressful to play, and demand too much of my time. Probably because I am too busy...mind you. Yes RV has potential, but will it match other simulations like WWII online is the big question... It can't be answered yet....but there is the possibility that it can reach that level eventually.
Anyway, people that hate this game or stopped playing it, or are just bullcrapping like they played it or hate the game because of the graphics...I tell you just one thing.....go and get a life and stop wasting your time.
This is my post for the month...I'm going to bed now, gnite. I'll post another post in around another month.
From the very start it's incredibly clear that this is a partisan's view. I can't speak to the game itself as I haven't tried it, but calling this a review is really abusing the term.
That's your unfounded opinion, when you admit that you have not even played the game. From your reply it also sounds as if all you read was actually, "the very start," of the review
Maybe you missed this:
"...occasional lag is notably disruptive enough to combat and crafting when it occurs, that it must be solved before I can fully recommend the game for anyone interested."
It is impossible for a reviewer to not have some level of bias in every single situation. In fact, if a person does not have at least some bias or familiarity, "preference or inclination," in a given situation, then their opinion would be inexperienced and uninformed. In other words, you can never be completely unbias. The way we form our thoughts and opinons is based upon past experiences. However, in this situation, six months ago I had never heard of RB or RV. I do not benefit in any way by reviewing RV other than to possibly have more people playing the game if my review ends up having a positive effect and reaching the right people. I am about as unbias about RV as a person could get and still be able to deliver an informed, experienced opinion of the game. What is highly bias is players giving their opinion of the game based soley on the graphics or when they have never tried it.
I distrust sepms opinion and believe it to be a failed attempt to praise this game.
After having played Roma Victor, I find it to be dull. It shines as much as a rusty nail in a thunderstorm. I do however find it to be a bold attempt at mediocrity with lag, poor graphics, etc.
As a veteran MMOG players, I can think of several better ways to spend our time such as cutting your toe-nails, doing your hair, watching CNN…all of which seem to me to be less mind-numbing and intellectually insulting.
Originally posted by sempiternal Words like yours are nothing but dishonest exaggeration in an attempt to ridicule the game... "...cutting your toe-nails..." Get out of here.
Allow me to edit and explain further...Your offended because I find this game humorous...which I experienced to be...well...ridiculous because of the lack of game-play and content and graphics which isnt even close to be on-par with UO back in the late 90's?
Your words seem to me to be overly optomistic and encouraging...misleading in the context of market standard when compared to many popular products that offer better entertainment. And whats even more hurtful is your seemingly over-exaggerated praise, particularly with so many impressionable youngsters who may be inadvertently persuaded to invest in this game, only to be disappointed.
It was unfortunate that I had the opportunity to play this game in a Market with really splendid games such as EQ, EvE, WoW, DnD...games that though I may have issue with for one reason or another, those flaws don't come near to adding up to the game-play disappointment I had with RV. For the same reason why I wouldnt purchase a horse and buggy as my main mode of transportation, is similar to the reason why I wouldn't invest anything in RV as a means of entertainment.

Perhaps if it wasn't given by the most rabid fan of the game there wouldn't have been "some level of bias". I could find the same neutrality in some DnL reviews at one time too.
How much do graphics really matter? Well in the end maybe not much BUT there is a limit to how bad you can make it and still have an interesting game. If this is a simulation of how it was to live in rome then one of the most important thing is to make the players feel they are really there. With these kind of graphics that's impossible.
There are other things as well that are important but looking at your posted screens and the text window in them it become obvious that the game fails in many of those too. "You are entering the town_civic_10_a" "You are enetering the fort_gate_stone"
Not even the text mud for 20 years ago had such bad named for their places. Just face it, this game might become good in 2-4 years (if it survies that long) but right now it's not worth being called either a game nor a simulation.
"Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason."
You have a point about the game using the exact code names as the descriptive names, but surely that is not enough reason to avoid a game. The descriptions can, and likely will, be updated in the future.
As far as the constant complaint about the graphics, I have not seen any graphics in an MMO that are more realistic looking than RV's. You write, "with these kind of graphics," it's impossible to make players feel they are really there. That is subjective. I find the graphics to be photo realistic - look at the face and some of the armor of the guard in the review above. Can you show me something more realistic?
Let's see these MMO graphics that really would make players, "feel they are really there." I have not seen any MMO graphics that are more realistic than Roma Victor's. If you have, then please share them. I suspect that many players have heard, "the graphics suck" and have blindly began to believe it, sight unseen. Anyway, it should not be too hard; if the claims about the graphics being unplayable are even remotely true, then finding graphics that are more realistic should be an easy task.
Originally posted by sempiternal Have you played the game tetsul?
Nope, and I don't intend to. Nothing to do with RV I can look past the problems as long as they're being worked on, I do not want to play with its fans. Every time I've seen on this and the official forum something brought up to be worked on or changed they get shouted down with nonsense about hardcore, maturity, or weeding out the bad people. I'm not paying money to be involved in the MMORPG equivalent of some junior high click.
I haven't played this game, so this is all just my opinion.
I watched those "PvP" videos, and looked at those screen shots, and read through some of that one sided "review." Roma Victor is a game that I will never care to play, and never care to hear about again. The graphics are horrible, and the PvP looks just about as fun exciting as sticking my hand in the blender. Sorry
Some people say graphics don't matter, which may be the case. For me, this simply is not. I like hot girls, some dudes like fat ones. It's all a matter of preference, and I prefer to never come into close proximity of this game or anything related to it... Besides this thread.
- Adam "I like hot chicks and good graphics" Cook.
I don’t happen to appreciate the game either and to imply, what seems to be in a fanatic manner by the original poster, that this game is as entertaining, complete and immersive as he claims it to be, strikes me as being wrong since I've played it.

I for one will not encourage these people, and you should'nt either because 5 years from now your Game list is going to have more pages then a World History book.
If it were up to you there would be one game, WoW, and that's it. Well I thank the Lord for people like Red Bedlam. People who are willing to eat rice cakes for 6 months and sleep 3 hours a day to try and make something different and original. You and your mentality can go live in WoW's candyland for all your days. I don't want to play the same old MMORPG in a shiny new skin made by millionaires and publicists. Give me something original or at least a challenge.
Thank you Razor for probably your best post ever.
God forbid every MMORPG shouldn't look like a ******* cartoon fairy tale and just be an action RPG with a chat system and quests.
LOL, wanna hear something funny? They could prob easily remove the code that tells it to display in the chat box where you are entering. But since it is there it could be eithre harder then I think OR used for debugging reasons. When you send a error report I think it sends all your chats from the box so the "now entering, Now leaving" messages could be to let the Devs know where you are.
But that is mere speculation on my part.
Now for something more serious. More or less everyone on RV is telling Semp to shutup on here. I have not said anything but I think it is time to put my foot out.
SEMP, SHUT UP! All you are doing is pissing people off and making the rest of hte community look like asses which is far from true. I think even people who played and hated the game would agree the the community is close and indeed mature.
As for myself, Yes I love this game, but I do try to keep as reasonable as possible. As I told to Herculies I have no issues with anyone, just your point of view.
I agree with what one of the mmorpg staff said in this thread, its more of a simulation rather than your usual eyecandy mmorpg. If you like ancient history & enjoy roleplay/crafting, then this game is for you. The Tuatha De Biatach(Guild im in) are the most dedicated crafters on the game at the moment. Right now i play it more for the people rather than the game itself.
Originally posted by sempiternal You have a point about the game using the exact code names as the descriptive names, but surely that is not enough reason to avoid a game. The descriptions can, and likely will, be updated in the future.
It's just one of many small things. Each in their own they might not be important but too many of them..
As far as the constant complaint about the graphics, I have not seen any graphics in an MMO that are more realistic looking than RV's. Using a photo for face texture != photo realism. If you want realistic looking graphics in a non fantasy setting I suggest you take a look at Pirates of the Buring Sea. Also made by a first time small developer.
What do you mean sight unseen? So the videos posted earlier and the screenhots you yourself posted in this thread are not representitive of the game? Because it's those that me and most others here judge the graphics by. If you feel that the videos have missrepresented the game then why not make a video yourself that show how it really is.
One thing you should note is that graphics is a lot of things, it's the textures, it's the polygons, it's the effect and it's how all these work together to create the playing enviorment. It's the dust in the corners and the leaves blowing in the wind, it's the small details that make a realistic looking enviorment. The RV world have none of these, it's just barren. Do you really think the streets of rome where that clean and pixel straight?
"Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason."
I'll check on the graphics in Pirates of the Burning Sea, compare them to Roma Victor and get back to you in this thread. I have a feeling that I am going to see animated-like characters and fantasy-like colors though, rather than the realistic graphics of Roma Victor.
Yes, a good combat video still needs to be made, with warriors in full armor and a close up view of them fighting, lunging, blocking and dodging, engaging and disengaging as they conserve and use their energy. The two videos that were posted were both during lag and because the events were not specifically staged to make a pretty video, there was no control over the distance or view of the camera. While the second video is much better, with some players wearing armor and using swords, it was taken at far too great of a distance to see much action or detail - because it was an actual fight, the player taking the video had to be outside the ring.
The developers are probably the ones that should do this, but if they don't I will work on one. One of the things I noticed people complaining about is that the fighters are in loincloths and using spears. The reason that is the case is because weapons and armor in Roma Victor are highly valued and scarce, just as they were back in the iron-age. You cannot get them by beating on rats and goblins all day; they have to be realistically and painstakingly crafted by a skilled smithy at a forge from raw components such as wood and ore, which a miner or carpenter might supply. Because the game is so new, few crafters have even reached the level yet where they can craft armor. As far as I know, only one crafter has even created a set of chain-mail like armor, a lorica hamata and it was done by purchasing some of the components, which we either have not figured out how to craft or are not available yet.
As more players gain the skill and knowledge to craft more elaborate weapons and armor and as more types of weapons and armor are introduced into the game by the developers, you will see more players fighting in armor with better weapons. But as of now, the world is realistically growing just like small communities naturally would. One of the easiest weapons to make is a spear with a pole and a spear-head and, thus, that is what you see players using to fight with in the early stages. At this point, smiths have reached the level of ability and skill where swords and helmets have begun to be made in decent quantities and you will likely see more of them in future videos.

Have you got nothing better then to promote this piece of junk and try and boost the ratings here ?
Game is junk and how it even has 6.3 ratings i have no idea. The 8% pc zone gave it is more becoming.
"You are entering the town_civic_10_a"
"You are enetering the fort_gate_stone"
Thanks.

I don’t happen to appreciate the game either and to imply, what seems to be in a fanatic manner by the original poster, that this game is as entertaining, complete and immersive as he claims it to be, strikes me as being wrong since I've played it.
